The bars in declining old steel city of Dusquene tend to be few and far between, inconsistent in their operation, and with very spotty data on the internet and social media-- although the facebook site is updated regularly. But the bars that survive can carve out intimate and pleasant spaces, amidst the crumbling surroundings, and this is the case with the Safari Club, on the ground floor of a 3 to 4 story old building, with broken windows, faded plywood over upper doors, and the brick walls in back appearing to crumble. But inside the Safari is a cozy neighborhood dive bar space. True to it's name, the Safari contains a good number of African artifacts and jungle-themed decor. But like many true dives, the theme varies widely. Above the bar are three taxidermy buck heads, two quite professionally done surrounding one that appears older and executed by someone just starting to learn the craft. Opposite the pool table is a selection of photos of old school jazz and rock stars. The bartender and manager Quanda tells me her uncle owns the bar and the taxidermy, and she guessed it had been here for about 23 years, with no idea what was here before it. The efforts to maintain a friendly, safe environment are more evident than usual, including a large fluorescent green 86 list and requirement that you must be at least 30 years-old to enter. Altogether it creates unique neighborhood joint and a welcoming getaway from the heat and humidity, as well as the other struggles outside. The drinks are typical dive bar spirits and canned beers, and the food fairly standard pub fare (wings, burgers, fish sandwiches, etc.). Jambrewzle is an annual, one-day festival that celebrates music, art, and beer. I believe that this…read morefestival has been held for 11 years now. I attended Jambrewzle in 2026 at Four Seasons Brewing Company. Admission was free. I had arrived near opening time, so I easily found a parking spot for my vehicle. The music schedule listed several live bands. I heard the local funk and cover band Ostrich Sausage, and I enjoyed listening to their instruments and vocals. Some food trucks were set up to sell pizzas, hotdogs, BBQ, ice creams, and coffees. I purchased a BBQ meal. I had not brought foldable chairs, which perhaps I should have done, but in a field I found a boulder on which I could sit and eat my food. Afterward, I explored the several vendors that sold merchandise such as clothing, jewelry, and jams. Overall, the event was fun. If you like to support local bands and small food and craft businesses, then I encourage you to attend this festival.

Husband and I attended the candlelight Open House here that was held by the historical society. I…read morelive only a few miles away from this site, but haven't been here for years. Why is it one doesn't see the places closest to home? There have been numerous improvements and more to come with a new education center under construction. If anyone is interested in the local history of the area, a visit here and Fort Ligonier should be included. It was located along Forbes Road, the main route into the Ohio Country from eastern Pennsylvania, and named for Robert Hanna, an early settler whose tavern also served as Westmoreland County's first courthouse. Hannastown was settled primarily by Irish and Scotch-Irish, though the surrounding area was mostly Pennsylvania Dutch. In one of the final actions of the American Revolutionary War, the settlement was destroyed by a force of The King's 8th Regiment out of Fort Niagara. The gift shop has books, souvenirs in line with this era. The volunteer guides were very nice and cordial during our short stay.

My husband and I were driving home from the Westmoreland County arts and crafts festival and…read morediscovered Hanna's town as we were driving. The place was closing within 15 minutes but I had the opportunity to meet with a couple of staff and learn about the place. Hanna's Town is a national historic site not often noted during the pre and during the Revolutionary War. We learned that it was the first English court west of the Allegheny Mountains and this town had more prominence than Pittsburgh which had yet to be developed. The settlers adapted what was called the Hanna's town resolves which fueled the movement towards independence. It was also was an important site during the war recruiting men for the Continental Army and for the militia that aided the western campaigns against the Indian allies of the British. The actual town itself was burned by Indians and British allies in 1782 and a partial recreated village was built in its place to show the hard lives the early settlers had and the important part they played in achieving American Independence. A lady let us view a one room house with bare floors that had table and chairs, a bed, and a fireplace along with dishes and other things needed for a frontier lifestyle. One can only imagine what life must have been like in that period. I had an opportunity to tour the fort on the grounds and saw various items such as a fireplace, the frame of a TeePee, and a memorial to a 12 year girl by the daughters of the American Revolution who gave her lives to the Indians. With very little time we were allowed into the gift shop where they have additional artifacts about the town itself. They offer tours which last 1 1/2 hours and since they were closing asked us to return for one. Tours are only $5.00 but you can get $1.00 off if you are AAA member or Senior Citizen. I was given a pamphlet where I learned they host events, court reenactments, antique and collectibles markets and other things. This is definitely a must return trip since it will give me an opportunity to learn more about the colonial lifestyle. Located on Forbes Trail Road it is an easy drive to Greensburg.

Today we went to the library and met a therapy horse, played in a bouncy house, had our face painted, played hop scotch, colored pictures, and did banana split and Daniel Tiger crafts. There is something for everyone. We also enjoyed watching all of the entertainment and singers. And of course we had to get a banana split! There are many food trucks and different vendors selling homemade items too. All and all it's a great time!

As you enter the store, you pass through a fabulously displayed produce section.(sometimes, I am even hesitant to take an item off of this produce work of art!) After walking through the produce section, you will find yourself in the well-stocked self serve antipasti bar filled with all the many different types of olives, mushrooms, artichokes, roasted peppers, etc. The next area of the store features a fabulous cheese counter with cheeses from all over the world. The cheese counter connects to the prepared food section which offers anything from homemade potato salad to freshly made giant fish sandwiches. They also have a luncheon meat department which has more varieties of meats then I ever knew existed. And in case you were in need of something sweet, you will find a fine array of cookies, cheesecakes, pies, biscotti, birthday cakes, sweet rolls and much more. And if your cart isn't full yet, you still need to make your way through the grocery area to stock up on pasta sauce and noodles, imported olive oil and salad dressings. We reported the issues and they offered a check as reimbursement, which is nice. Now they tell us to buy other brands because of our honest comments. Let's look at it objectively ... they have butter cookies with mislabeled ingredients. Shouldn't they thank us for bringing it to their attention and get it correct? That would seem logical and the same holds for other Delallo foods. They do no quality control. They just blame the customer and are unwilling to make improvements. Time to buy Greek brands. They know how to treat a customer with respect, even if once in awhile a product is to the customer's disliking.
