Figured it was worth it as it was getting dark and Beckley is 30 some miles away. The hotel is situated 3 miles from downtown Welsh on Hwy 16 (Stewart Street).It's a very quaint motel. Met the clerk at the motel (who met us at the office since no one is there 24/7) and checked in which was a very easy process. She was very personable and friendly. She informed they recently got a new mayor who is very ATV friendly....which hopefully will boost business. The room was very clean and loved that it included a refrigerator and microwave. The tiled bathroom floor and tiled entry area were pretty sticky and the carpet didn't look completely vacuumed. But overall the cleanliness was good. There isn't a coffee maker in the room but I did notice there is one in the lobby. But since no one is in the lobby 24/7 and it remains locked, I'm not sure how someone would access it. There is WIFI but it was pretty weak...assuming the equipment is in the office and my room was the farthest one away. Overall, it's a cute motel that's comfortable and has most of the necessities. It sure beats driving in the dark on some of these windy roads. Highly recommend!

When I was getting ready to go to sleep, I discovered a huge hole in the wall underneath the bathroom sink (photo attached.)It appeared to be located where the drain used to be, so there is a strong possibility that sewer gases (and who knows what else ) are escaping from this hole. Needless to say, I didn't sleep very well thinking about what could crawl in through that hole. The next morning, I was going to take a shower and then go downstairs to ask to switch rooms. It was then that I noticed that instead of replacing the bathtubs, they tried (unsuccessfully) to coat it with some kind of material which is peeling off in several places. I went down to the front desk to try to switch rooms and was told that the same situation with the hole in the wall and peeling bathtub exists in several rooms. They offered to discount my room, but that really wasn't what I was looking for...... what I wanted was a functional room with no holes in the walls and a decent place to bathe. I thanked them for their help and told them that they probably needed to fire whatever contractor they used to do the work. Luckily, I was able to move across the street to the Holiday Inn Express who very graciously gave me an early check-in.

We've stayed at IHG hotels worldwide. This is the first hotel outside of a major city that charges for parking. We won't be back.

While the outside of the building looks like a smaller and less bedazzled building, it's in good shape and well maintained. The same is true for the rooms. It's a quiet place despite being right next to the interstate. The breakfast area is small, but it does a great job with what they have. They have folded egg omelets, Jimmy Dean sausage, make-your-own waffles, cereals, juices, fruits, carbs, etc. There is a small workout room as well. Next door is a Subway and gas station with typical convenience store items, and across the street is a home cooking' restaurant that locals seem to like. Driving south 4 miles or so will take you into Marion where there are many restaurants, Walmart, and other stores common in small towns. This motel is also about 4 miles from the Mount Rogers Recreation Headquarters and access to the Appalachian Trail. Bottom line, there is a lot to like about this model and they do the most they can with it.

They are not staffed 24/7 but they are very prompt with responding to text messages if you have any questions. I stayed in the Kennedy Cottage which was its own private small space away from the main building. The room was lovely and it was nice to have the privacy and not worry about shared walls. They prepared a wonderful hot breakfast in the morning with fruit and a tartin- kind of an open-faced sandwich. My only complaint is the parking is very awkward, especially if you don't have a compact car, but they have made the most of the landscape.
