It all started when we were told they couldn't find our reservations which we made the day before, even sent three emails back and forth with the owner. I ordered the Trout! It came out thinner than I've see show leather. Coated in oil it was horrible. The vegetables were sparse, I had maybe one carrot cut into strips with one and a half Brussel Sprouts! I started with the Cottage Salad, I had Hal's a cherry tomato in the salad! My fish was supposed to be served with a chimichurri sauce that was none existent! Could have used it for the bed of DRY rice that accompanied the meal. The others at the table all had a sub-par meal as well. The fish and chips was missing the chips. Even the waitress tried by bringing out a plate of fries after the fish was eaten. She offered one free Sticky Pudding, I also ordered the Sticky Pudding. It was served at room temperature not hot or even warm! The entire meal felt to me like it had been cooked before and reheated poorly. For the amount of money we had to pay, I would have expected a far better meal than what we received! I'm afraid it will be a long time before we go back there again! One waitress on a busy night is extremely poor service and the quality of the food left a very unpleasant impression of the restaurant. The restaurant was ok noise wise, until one group showed up, and they sat them right in the middle of the restaurant. Well the noise level sure went up a few 100 decibels, which made it hard to have a normal conversation at our table. First time visit. My wife and I had a urge to try something new as far as Family Dining was concerned. Impressed with the interior cottage like decor and cleanliness of this establishment. I chose the steak sandwich option with soup and salad. The steak was quite appetizing along with their house tomato basil soup. The side Greek side salad could have used a bit more dressing to give it a bit more snap. My wife's breakfast egg dish was tasty. The coconut cream pie was extremely nice and light enough to enjoy. Stopped by at this place on the way to blue mountain because it had good reviews. Had a pretty basic burger and fries. I very much enjoyed the burger, the meat tasted fresh and was well formed into the patty. Toppings were the usual basics but all tasted fresh and were well balanced. Not a huge fan of the fries, also the serving size for other dishes seemed inconsistent. Would stop by again. Update: Also tried their western sand which and home fries for brunch. I came here while waiting for some car repairs. Have been wanting to check this place out for a while. Was warmly greeted when I walked in, quickly brought a menu and water. I chose the waffle with grapefruit juice. Honestly, I walked in, ordered, and the food was in front of me in less than 10 minutes. The service was so fast!! It was quiet, but still a good amount of customers, and i noticed many people had their food brought quickly. He LOVES the Club sammie, says it's enough to bring leftovers home! I just had a Salad with Chicken, but the dressing was really good. Right, so brunch in Barrie. Too-easy jokes and small-town jabs aside, I was pretty stoked about the possibility of this non-Toronto location yielding a seriously solid breakfast joint that I would otherwise never encounter and guess, what, Country Kettle didn't disappoint. Stepping in there was like coming off some dirt road in Anytown, USA - this place was all kinds of quaint - and it was difficult to tell if our waitress worked there because of how she looked or started working there and adopted said look. Classic chicken and egg dilemma. But I digress. 'Betty', as I so lovingly dubbed her, had Coke-bottle glasses, a helmet of hair and a pleasant demeanor that was refreshing and unhurried. I kept expecting her to call me 'Suge' (as in Sugar, not the once-incarcerated rapper) and pinch my cheeks, but it never happened. So - the food. I ordered the spinach omelette, no onions and no mushrooms natch, and what arrived in front of me was one of the most well-structured omelettes I've ever seen. Not only was it delicately folded, but extra spinach, feta and red pepper were gingerly strewn on top for maximum flavour distribution. Not one bite was without at least one of the tasty ingredients. It was also cooked to perfection - no nasty, overcooked brown spots - it was golden throughout. And the hashbrowns - oh boy. Seasoned just so, crispy enough to give a little crunch and thankfully not oversalted. I opted for the whole wheat bread and while pretty standard, certainly did not take away from the entire meal. 'Betty' was quick to refill my coffee, and my friend's tea, who also gave the thumbs up to her scrambled eggs and marble rye toast. The decor was country to a fault and there was even a row of hooks for men to hang their hats, with an overall feel of familiarity and aw-shucks charm. It's definitely not a place you'd visit for people-watching or atmosphere (much like Barrie itself) but I was there for the food and left feeling very pleased. Word of warning: this place is pretty kid-friendly, so if you're thinking of going over your previous night's exploits in any sort of sordid detail, use your indoor voice or choose a seat near the back. No one likes to self-censor over breakfast. read more

Went here for Barrielicious and were not disappointed. The Barrielicious prix fix menu had 3 appetizers, 3 mains and a choice of 2 desserts. I had the cream of mushroom soup starter which was loaded with large chunks of mushrooms. Yum! The main, steak, mashed potatoes and veggies was simple, yet delicious and filling. And, they cooked it perfectly for me. The dessert was just the right size slice of chocolate cake with strawberry coulis. My husbands meal was just as good. He had the flatbread with caramelized onions and haddock for his main. The butter tart square he found a bit too sweet, but hey, that's caramel! Too bad it's located right behind a gas station. They have made the effort to hide it from the inside with the decor, making it look somewhat cottage like. Would I go back? You bet!!! The food is worth it!!! It was pretty good - the bacon was decent, the ham was good and the sausage was okay, with a good amount of home fries. The eggs benny was better, with a nice hollandaise and perfectly cooked eggs. I came here the other day and had the classic burger and the handcut fries. The burger was delicious. It's a fresh, homemade patty. There did appear to be some seasoning and some finely diced onions in the patty, but it didn't have the binders of a classic meatloaf burger so it was still tender and juicy rather than tough and dry. I enjoyed it so much. I scarfed that burger down. The fries were great handcut fries. Unfortunately there was just a smidge too much seasoning salt. Seasoning salt is tricky. A perfect amount can elevate fries, but too much can just make eating fries a salty chore. I like to err on the side of not enough over too much. The customer can always doctor their fries with plain salt at the table if there's not enough. Service was excellent - friendly and efficient. I would definitely come back here. read more

We came for dinner on a Saturday night in January on our way back to Toronto. The restaurant was surprisingly empty at ~6pm (even the waitress remarked that it was slow). But it did pick up a little bit by the time we left. The staff was friendly and the service was fine. We got the quick dinner we were looking for. The ambiance/decor was as expected from the description and price range; I especially appreciated that there weren't any distracting tv screens!! The bruschetta with cheese was a nice starter. The bread was not as toasted as usual (which I prefer), the tomatoes were nicely seasoned with herbs, and the cheese was a wonderful soft feta (? I think?). I got the canoe burger, which had an excellent patty as described by other reviewers. Others got the liver and onions (we all agreed that the gravy tasted like it was actually made in-house!) and the quarter chicken dinner (white meat was prepared nicely, not dry). The portions were very generous. The house red wine was fine. Finally we managed to cram a triple fudge brownie sundae for dessert. The brownie was good and made much better by being served warm. Ice cream and other accoutrements weren't noteworthy. Overall food was very good. Nothing fancy but very good with generous portions and friendly, prompt service. The bill wasn't as expensive as I had anticipated from the four $ rating on Yelp; it came out to just under $35 per person with tax and tip ...but maybe I'm just used to Toronto prices :p My reason for the 4 star rating is because I'm picky. I would come again if I'm in the area. But it wouldn't be worth the trip from Toronto just to dine here, for example. read more

Strip mall restaurant. They tried to add some cottage country decor and charm, but they fell short and it really feels more like a diner. Breakfast was mediocre, a little pricey for what you get. Eggs were poached well, but bacon so thin you could see through it. Fruit salad was standard for this time of year, hopefully they step that up when local produce is in-season. Coffee was blah, homemade jam was pretty good - better than the little packages other places give you. Good service, but the server can't buy better bacon and fruit.
