First time visit. Curious about trying a diner that has been operating for close to a hundred years. Old time Canadian style simple decor from 50s & 60s. Nothing fancy but a good use of space for this old diner. Indulged in a Salisbury Steak with onions, vegetables, beef gravy and a Pepsi. I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the portions. There were actually a good sized amount of peas and carrots on my dish. The Salisbury Steak with fine chopped onions was a fair size. No complaints about the service or price. I've been going to Hills since the 90s and have enjoyed the breakfast (French Toast my Fav) to the dinner (Broasted Chicken) but what keeps me going back are the people. The owners and staff make you feel like you matter. Great group who care that you get both quality and quantity. read more

I was in Orillia for work and wanted to grab a lunch, quick Google search recommended me this restaurant, didn't knew how historic this restaurant is, apparently they are in business for almost 100 years. It was very busy when I arrived and after waiting a bit got my seat, I ordered their burger. Buns were soft and floppy, patty was juicy and seasoned perfectly, topped with malted cheese and crispy bacons made for an one delicious burger. Also my server was very friendly. The perfect place to grab breakfast anytime. We stopped on our way from New Jersey to Minnesota and were treated to good food, a delightful waitress and a great local dish called 'peameal'. I had to look it up and learn how it's made. It's a Toronto invention from the 1800s consisting of brined pork rolled in ground peas! Today's version uses cornmeal but it's a tender, savory treat similar to ham. Must try and enjoy the local color! read more

I was up with my boyfriend's family in Couchaching and we decided to get lunch. Last time I got the large breakfast special and it was delicious. Fresh, local and downright delicious, this home cooking is what you need. Now that it's getting colder, a hot turkey sandwich with mash and gravy with peas and carrots filled me to the brim! Every once in a while, Yelp does me a bad turn. I thought that the overall aggregate for this place, particularly with 2 elites giving it 4 stars, meant that it would be a good bet. It was overall pretty disappointing. This is a local greasy spoon diner type restaurant, the place where locals eat. Usually that's a good thing, but not really in this case. I had French Toast, which wasn't bad, and Lee decided to have a hot turkey sandwich, which is where things kind of went off the rails. The turkey looked old and stale, the gravy was really salty but also bland, but the worst part was the veg served with the sandwich, which was something that came out of a can and gave me horrible memories of dinners at friends houses. The kind of veg that turns children away from eating vegetables. It was pretty gross, and Lee had to eat around it. The bit of the last straw was that it ended up being more expensive than we expected, being inexplicably charged about twice as much as the menu prices seemed to indicate. There was no actual ticket written up for our order, so there was nothing to really dispute. I don't think I'll be returning. read more

I visited a friend in Orillia over the weekend and when it was dinner time I asked if he could take us somewhere that the locals liked to eat at, particularly a Mom and Pop diner place that served homely meals. Well, we came to the right place. Hills is a small establishment where each table is fixed in the form of booths which add alot to the diner type feel. The menu contains a list of familiar Canadian food but everything sounds good so it takes a while to choose. I finally decided on the Hot Chicken Sandwich with a side of Home Fries. Tip: when it just says that the dish comes with vegetables and "potatoes" you have to ask the waitress about the potatoes and she'll mention about five different types. The Home Fries comes in two different types, "dollars" and "squares". I got the dollars which are wedge cut and circular shaped with the largest ones about the size of a loonie. I think this is the first eatery where I've had home fries of this shape. The pounded chicken breast which was cooked just moist comes on a slice of breast with a good pouring of what looks like instant chicken gravy, still tasty! The portions was generous and finished everything on my plate filled me up. I really liked the home fries, nice golden and crispy on the outside and chewy inside and goes well with the gravy. And we returned here for brunch which is served until 1pm on Sundays. We went for dinner only five booths were occupied but oh boy, for brunch the place was packed, every booth was occupied and the two of us were lucky to grab a booth while other customers had to wait a bit. See, the place sure is one of the spots that the locals haunt for a comforting meal. Brunch was excellent! I had the Ham and Eggs (perfectly cooked over-easy) with Home Fries and brown toast. Everything on my plate was so tasty that I would still polish it off even if I wasn't very hungry. Another tip: you do have to ask the waitress for a coffee refill which I think is free. Both my dinner and brunch meals made me feel like my Mum had popped into the kitchen to cook up something, after I came home from a long work day or get me set for the morning. Definitely homely. So for those of you who happen to make pass through Orillia and want to have a no-fuss, comforting meal at a place that's not a chain restaurant and where the staff don't fuss over you, then check this place out. read more

I had whole wheat French toast and bacon well done. I was a little disappointed that the French toast didn't have any icing sugar on it & came with pancake sauce instead of maple syrup and only 3/4 of each of my pieces of bacon were well done, so I couldn't eat the one end of each of them and the bacon was very salty but besides that the food still tasted good. We did not have to wait for a seat and our food came fast. read more

Long wait time for a table and even longer wait time for food. We were ignored until a table was ready. No one even greeted us in passing. Very loud, hard to have a conversation. I had a Hot Chicken Sandwich that tasted like it should be from a frozen dinner. No taste to the gravy, just white goop. Veggies were overcooked with no taste. Chicken wasn't good quality. My companion had a BLT that looked to be more bread than bacon, lettuce or tomato. We will never eat here again. Not sure why it's so popular for such poor quality food. read more
