My usual experience at this Costco in Modesto, CA is normally satisfactory. However, today is the third time that I have had a rude & unacceptable encounter with a worker who helps load and unload their carts and pick up shopping carts; named: Alec. The service with him has been terrible; including today's encounter with him. I have asked him to please open the trunk and place my shopping items into it, as I cannot do it myself due to my disability. I have asked Alec to place them in a certain order in the trunk, i.e. perishables together and on top of the other items. This way, I can have my helper at home unload those items in order so they won't be forgotten and go bad. Alec waited until I asked him for the second time, can you please open the trunk and place the items in there in a certain order? He reluctantly opened the trunk and threatened "I will not help you and you are being rude." He called me rude twice. He tossed my items in without much care which would cause them to be damaged from his rough handling.... I asked him once more to please close the trunk of the car, and he slammed it and marched off with a very ugly attitude and mumbling something under his breath. Because of this repeated experience with Alec, I am giving this store 2 stars. I hope that management will see this review and take care of this...no one should be treating their clients this way unless they don't want clients/customers. read more

The night before Thanksgiving, 2025, I bought $200 worth of groceries and I bought a $50 gift certificate using a different credit card. When I got to my car, I hopped inside to put the gift card inside the thank you card I had prepared, so I wouldn't misplace it. I sat there and texted for awhile and wondered if I should use the restroom before I headed home to Sonora, which is a little over an hour away. When two cars in front of me pulled out, I took the opportunity and drove forward towards home. I decided to wait and unload the groceries in the morning when I was rested. I watched a little TV, and decided to go out and get the bag of nuts I'd purchased to snack on. You guessed it...there were no groceries in the car! I'd spaced out and drove away leaving my unloaded cart in the Riverbank Costco parking lot! I never even thought about calling Costco until later. They said their cart guys log in items found in the carts and said I should call back Friday when they reopened. When I called back, they said nothing had been turned in, but a stand out worker named Marcos asked me about where I was parked and their LP guy would go through the videos. I didn't expect anything to be done. It was clearly my fault Carlos pursued the matter though and I went down today to talk with him. Unfortunately, he was called away on personal business, but referred me to Elizabeth, his manager. Elizabeth asked me a few questions and then asked if I would like to shop to replace the items or she could have one of her workers do it. We decided to go with the later as it was faster. Elizabeth said she would then walk me through the front door! When the great worker who pulled my order ( I wish I could remember his name) came back with my order, an Elizabeth said she would now walk me out, I had to force myself from crying! What a team and what a caring policy. That's not the end of the story though, their LP (loss prevention) guy reviewed the videos from that night and saw another customer loading my goods into their car. Through the license plate, the LP guy (wish I knew his name too) found out who the member is and Costco will be contacting them. I asked Elizabeth if she liked working with Costco. She said she loved it. She had planned to go into teaching, but went to work at Costco and liked it so much she stayed. She says now that she is a manager, her desire to teach is also being fulfilled... I had to get out of there cuz the tears were coming again, and I'm a macho guy! This Costco has become the worst store in town due to the customer service being horrible! All The workers that I encountered today were rude and had a terrible attitude. We came to pick up a pizza we had ordered over the phone. We waited in the pickup line for 10 mins or so because it was busy. When we got up there we told them we had a pizza for pickup and they said we had to go to the kiosk to pay and then come back up. My boyfriend asked if he had to wait in line again because we had already waited 10 mins and the line was still long. The lady "helping" him in the front rolled her eyes and with a horrible attitude said no you just come right back up. So we did just that. Had we known this before we would have never waited in line to begin with. This must be a new system that they fail to tell you in the beginning or mention over the phone. Once we jumped through all these hoops, we got in the front and we were ignored and then another shopper asked where she goes to pick up pizza and they said a different window, so we heard and followed. When my boyfriend got up there he said he was picking up a pizza and a different lady said that he has to wait in line again and we were already irritated by this point. After this I went back up to the original lady who had told us we didn't have to wait and told her about the pizza and how she told us we didn't have to wait in line again and she said "who told you you didn't have to wait?" and I responded "you did" with a confused face. How does she not know she just told us that less than 5 minutes ago?! Incompetent people working for this establishment. This was such a fiasco just to get a simple pizza. I don't even know why they changed their system in the first place. If it ain't broke don't fix it! Kind workers would have made this experience better. Surprised that several items which are seasonal or have disappeared from Bay Area Costcos are regularly available here. Some people say Flan is only in Costco Mexico but it's a staple in Central Valley Costco Bakeries and also at my local Bay Area warehouse in South San Francisco. Smitten by the many tequila and mezcal options in Modesto. Several great items on clearance, as noted by the asterisk in the upper right indicating a Pending Delete, with markdown prices ending in $.97. Overall, I brought home some fantastic souvenirs. But... Minus 3 stars bc I'm REPULSED that a Costco Modesto employee at the Returns counter accepted someone's USED UGG's with actual POOP on the soles and then put them on the floor to resell at full price $99.99?! See my included pics. Let this be a warning: if you see an online-only pair of shoes on the floor, be really cautious opening up that box. The clerk in return department was flat out rude telling me I would need to wait because he has lots of stuff to retag his name was Josh not friendly or welcoming at all and I went ahead and got the credit for the item because I just wanted to replace it but his assumption that stork said it was fine and just not impressed. The Riverbank floor is much better. The people are much more polite and congenial. Definitely recommend avoiding the Pelandale store. This is not the first time I've had issues doing returns. Very disappointing to see Costco follow Big Corporations in a money grab tactic! And who have they targeted, the disabled and seniors. For many years, as a disabled person, I have been able to shop at Costco beginning at 9:00 AM per their policy to allow the disabled and seniors early access. I've done this up until today when I tried to enter at 9:45 and was refused entry by a very rude, aggressive employee who told me that if I wanted to enter before 10:00AM I would have to upgrade my membership and pay an additional fee. He further explained to me that this policy had been in effect since shortly after COVID which is just not true as I'd been there about 2 weeks ago before 10:00 and was allowed entry. As I was waiting outside for the clock to strike 10:00 with the self-appointed Costco police glaring at me, more and more disabled and senior citizens were being turned away and there were now so many of us that we were blocking the entrance to Costco although we graciously stepped aside when we noticed someone with an Executive Membership card trying to enter. When we were finally allowed in, I heard the same rude self-appointed "Costco Police" employee make rude comments about us (the disabled and seniors) to his co-worker. Hope the bully is proud of himself for treating the disabled and seniors with such little respect, empathy and consideration. But the real problem is Costco Corporate office who allows employees to treat the disabled and senior with such little respect and their policy change to extract more money from a segment of the population who are on a fixed income and struggling to be able to afford groceries and health care in our current economic climate. read more

They have a senior citizen named Donna giving out some cookie samples and this lady was acting inappropriate thinking she can yell at customers who were getting samples that she placed on a brown tray. Costco is brilliant and I support them and they are a life line for me on many levels from food, prescriptions, products, and community. It is an event for me to go to Costco and not something I take for granted. I'm a senior and I need to speak up because I was disgusted by some of the comments. I love Costco and they have done nothing but always treated me, my family, friends, and community with respect. Sure, there is 1-2 workers who have to enforce rules at the door and safety because it does get crowded but this has always been reasonable and fair and sure 1-2 employees have an off day, but honestly, all the 1 star reviews sound like winy, entitled people picking on getting into the door right at 10 am, often rude themselves and are not mindful of their own contribution to conflict, grumpy for having to wait 20 minutes for a pizza to be prepped and cook and served, miscommunication that sounds like they were two-way issues, etc. Like if the cheese has gone bad, Ms. Leah, Costco will let you return it unless you ate more than 1/2 and even then sometimes they would still take it. Sheesh! Their return policy is generous but there is a point where people are guilty of taking advantage of it too. These complains seem really petty and even suspicious to me. I get you might be mad in the moment and feel slighted by an individual employee but that does not mean it is the whole damn company or staff and everyone has an off day as we all have our own issues and worries and you just don't know what that individual is dealing with in their personal life. People are spread thin and in real trauma right now because the actions of the government and failure on all side (not just one side but ALL sides). Costco is very generous, most of the people are sweet and kind, and as a corporation as a whole, and I think a lot of these people are upset that Costco is supportive of diversity, inclusivity, and equality. (And before you get on me I am a Republican! but I am also a Christian). Where is the humanity? These are the same people who probably think it is okay to take SNAP food away from children. Costco, not these other big box companies help and aid our communities that have disasters or low-income needs, like starving children. Think about your community! We stopped by this Costco recently to get our credit card voucher. We noticed right away that this particular location is smaller than other Costcos. Their selection of items is also fairly different from other locations. Organic items can still be found here - but they definitely seemed to be more scarce than other Costcos. We were excited to see that the lines here were very manageable and much better than other locations. The staff that we encountered here were friendly and everyone around us seemed to be masked up and genuinely happy to be in Costco. We found our items quickly and my husband picked up a delicious smelling chicken bake, as well as a refreshing smoothie. It's easy to get caught up in the magic that is Costco - but we were able to get in and out of here smoothly and with big smiles on our faces. He needed to get diapers on the way home but he didn't have his Costco card (of course because he just had surgery and they only allow the patient to bring ID and hospital card). He stayed in the car as I went inside Costco with his ID. I explained the situation to a lady at the Customer Service area. She said she had to check with a supervisor. She spoke to Randy who was on duty with her. He said no despite my explanations and plea. Fortunately, a customer named Mary stepped up and said, "She can come with me and we'll use my card." Randy replied, "But she is not allowed to pay for the purchase. You (Mary) have to pay for it". I hope all employees anywhere are not as heartless. Mary walked with me until I paid for the box of diapers. I will never forget her kindness and compassion. So what did I learn about human nature? It was not really a lesson but a reiteration about what I know about people: 1. The kindness of strangers can often be counted upon. 2. Rules are rules and some use it not to keep the order of things but to give others a hard time. From what I've been told Costco can give a one day complimentary pass. Issue 1 - on October 19 2023, i placed an order for 20 pizzas to be picked up at 4pm on Saturday the 21st. I was told it wouldn't be a problem and was ordering them for a school event. When I arrived at 315pm to pay for them and let them know I was here they proceeded to tell me that they didn't have my order and since I had just paid for them I would need to wait in line with all the other orders. When I was given my pizza half of them were not even cut into regular pizzas. Again, this was for a school fundraiser. Not happy. Tonight, 29 Dec 2023 I arrived to shop inside the store. Before beginning my shopping I placed an order for a whole pizza. When I was finished shopping more than 30 minutes later I walked up to the pizza window to ask how much longer it would be for the pizza. A simple question. I was asked what my order number was 3 times by the guy at the window and he at no point was willing to tell me how much longer. When I asked him for a third time he asked if I had stood in the middle line first. I said no, I placed the order then went shopping and wanted to know how much longer it would be. He told me to go to the middle line. So here I stand, now 10 minutes later and the line has not moved. I asked a basic question, I have already placed my order and think it is ridiculous to have to stand in yet another line when the whole point of ordering ahead was for it to be picked up when I was done shopping. You need to get some kinder employees who can answer basic questions. I have wondered for a while now if it is even worth it to have a membership here. I've been a business member now for more than 5 years and spend, on average 15,000 a year. I'm cancelling my membership. It's not like the prices here are competitive anymore. read more

My first warehouse club card was to Sam's Club. The idea of buying necessities in bulk or at least purchasing things that are logical in large amounts makes sense to me.
