Excellent pancakes, cheap price, no atmosphere In late March 2015 our party of three had breakfast at the Cortez Café. The pancakes were excellent, the Belgian waffle was very good, the hash browns were good, the eggs and sausage were OK but nothing special. The eggs benedict were not good - the sauce did not taste authentic and the ham, although fresh, was sliced too thick. The coffee was OK, not fabulous, but strong enough. The wait service was good and very quick. The atmosphere was non-existent. The Cortez Café's main virtue is that the prices are cheap ($30.00 for three, including tax and tip) and they're next to a coin laundry, so you can kill some time having a meal while doing your laundry. Cortez (the town) is now my go-to place for no-frills food done right (also see: Star Fish Co). This diner in a strip mall hit the spot for breakfast. It is full of locals who appear to eat there every day (at least according to the guy next to us, who told us he walks there every morning for breakfast, which always includes grits unless his wife is with him and forces him to get oatmeal). Anyway, it is not an attractive place but the food was good. And, like the Star Fish Co (also in Cortez), neighbors are chatty. I had the egg BLT and the grits, which was great (grits were yum), but my husband's Greek omelet was a real winner, with lots of fresh spinach and tomatoes. read more

OK.. so this place is your quintessential local luncheonette/Small diner.. Open for Breakfast and lunch only. This family owned restaurant cares about their customers and as a diner, you feel cared about. Great omelets, made with 4 eggs!!! All fresh ingredients. The grits are the best in town,,, and I have tried just about all the breakfast places in NW Bradenton!.. This place is a well know eatery among the fisherman in Cortez Fishing Village. Give this place a try for Breakfast at the very least.. you will be glad you did.. Just a local joint serving up good cooking with care! read more

Don't let the exterior fool you. If you can look past it (we thought it was a fish market) you may give it a 5, as well ( for the food and service). We stopped in for breakast. Hubby ordered eggs, home fries, corned beef hash and toast. The hash was cooked perfectly, the home fries were delicious. I ordered the protein wrap... SO GOOD and highly recommended. Found this little hidden gem when our first choice restaurant was closed for painting. There was not a table available immediately but we were brought coffee while we waited, which was a very short time. Our meals were great, with great home fries and hash browns, the omlets were huge with delicious ham, asparagus cooked just right and cheese, my husband had the Greek Benedict and it was great, muffin, thick slice of ham, tomatoes and fresh spinach with a hollandaise sauce and feta cheese. This was the worst place I've ever been to. My husband & I thought we'd try it because we heard it was the best breakfast in town, but I don't know where that came from! When we were seated, the people seated next to us were leaving & looked very frustrated. I wish we would've taken the hint & left at that time. It took 15 minutes for anyone to acknowledge us & take our drink orders. It took another 20 minutes to get our drink order & order food. It took another 30 minutes to get our food. We complained to the manager & our waitress said it took so long because she fell in the back & had to rest her ankle for a while. Although, the entire time, I saw her walking around serving other tables. Trying to get drink refills or silverware were other battles. When we got our food, it was sitting in a puddle of oil and it was cold. They reheated it for us, and then the eggs were rubbery and everything was overdone and disgusting. I took 2 bites and couldn't force myself to do anymore. The manager/owner couldn't understand why we had any complaints. They took off 20% from our bill. We didn't fight it because we just wanted out of there. Everyone else around us had the same type of service that we did that day. I'm a very patient person, but this was beyond unacceptable. A real throwback to when restaurants were diners. As soon as we walked in this morning we were greeted with "Sit anywhere you like. There's a booth open here or you can sit in the back room." From the way they continued to greet people we could tell it's a local fav. We chose the booth and a very pleasant server was right there offering coffee. The breakfast was both delicious and plentiful. Very plentiful - thus the "to go box". We'll most certainly be back and recommend it for breakfast, but be sure to come hungry. read more

We are vacationing on Anna Maria island and wanted some breakfast, we heard about this cafe and thought we would give it a shot. When we walked in, we were greeted by friendly waitresses and seated right away (which is surprising for a party of 10!). We ordered, and within 15 mins out food was ready and hot.
