When we got there, our waitress was speaking and a piece of candy came out of her mouth, landed on the table, and then bounced onto my shirt. She apologized and said she was dealing with a horrible toothache, but honestly I was just shocked and disgusted. What upset me even more was that the table was never cleaned afterward. I've been a waitress before, and one of the biggest things you do not do while serving food is chew gum or candy for sanitary reasons. The whole situation completely ruined the experience for me and my husband. We ended up leaving because we were so uncomfortable and just grossed out. read more

Great, local joint that has been around for 60 years. Surprisingly, it was our first visit and it did not disappoint. We popped in on a Sunday morning and waited a few minutes before being seated. Coffee was hot and fresh. Service was spot on throughout the visit. My husband ordered the Hungry Man breakfast. The biscuit and gravy was loaded with sausage, but he thought the gravy was a little on the gritty side...didn't stop him from polishing it off! I ordered the breakfast burrito with sausage which came perfectly toasted with eggs, loads of sausage, peppers, onions and cheese. Best prices and best biscuits and gravy in the area, bar none. Atmosphere/ambience: hyper local and definitely on older crowd. Think wood paneling and 70s-80s low key decor. Lots of pictures and memorabilia for the local fishermen, fighter fighters, coast guard, and police. Lots of booths, some tables, and one medium sized counter. Despite the older and local crowd, very welcoming of anyone coming in. Our young kids are always greeted with a smile. Service: fairly speedy, straight forward, and no nonsense. Lots of assistant servers coming by to fill up coffee, water, and clean tables. Food comes out quick. Food: Great specials and they do the basics well. This is a place for classic American breakfast and done well. The best sausage gravy around and I've done my tour. Their over easy eggs are perfect with a nice runny center every time. The pork chops are lovely. Sizes of food are large. The fruit side is quality pieces. The prices might be cheap but the food isn't. Price: The prices are stuck in the 70-80s, too, luckily. Cheaper than in Anna Maria or longboat by a mile. May be cheaper than Waffle House too. Never change! We will always be back when we are in the area. read more

Man, so disappointed. Eggs benny is my fav and this place has multiple types but I am old school original. Well it should be two English muffins, Canadian bacon, and a poached egg on each with some hollandaise sauce and a couple dashes of paprika. Unfortunately, these were soggy English muffins, a large slice of what appeared to be country ham spread across both muffins with two eggs that appeared to be cooked in a muffin pan, sorry very over cooked eggs with a good drenching of.....um a hollandaise sauce that was a darker shade of yellow indicating it was definitely not fresh daily or overcooked based on color and texture. Then a bit too much of "old" paprika. Not sure if the grittiness was part of the hollandaise or the old paprika. Potato's were mid but did include a 1/2" baby pancake....no I didn't eat it. I didn't have any syrup . Anyway, for the $20 bill for that breakfast and a $2.45 cup of coffee I will need to look elsewhere for a quality breakfast. As a positive the customer service was great and the servers are very attentive, kind, but def stretched thin which garnered my restraint to return the breakfast and ask for corrections because it did not appear anything would change and I didn't want to add to their frustrations. For a simple breakfast eggs, bacon, taters, and toast the prices were not bad and I feel no doubt they could produce. I think the biggest issues here are the multiple specials and options. My family and I spent the weekend nearby and wanted to grab breakfast before we headed back home. I found this cafe on yelp and called ahead to check if there would be a wait for a party of 7 plus a toddler. The person that answered said there is currently no wait. I said great and ended the call. My family and I then decided to make our way over. We walked in and an older gentleman asked if we called ahead. I said yes, we did. I was blown away by this but the staff had been expecting us and had a table ready for us. I didn't tell the person on the phone I was coming but was so happy to see that they anticipated our arrival. My wife, in laws and infant son were seated immediately. We already were happy with the great service and just knew the food would be just as good as the service. The staff was prompt and provided beverages in a timely manner. Food was ordered and served within a reasonable time. Prices were reasonable, Food was great and everything we had hoped for. We definitely will be back to check out this cafe in the future as we visit Anna Maria 1-2x a year. Highly recommend checking this cozy cafe out. read more

This has been a go-to breakfast place for us when visiting family in town. It's always been an okay food experience. But this past week's visit made me happy. I had the Corned Beef Hash and Swiss Omelette. It was perfection. Service was slow but we attributed it to a couple employees out sick and a spring break rush. This was an okay "traditional" breakfast, diner style, poorly decorated in kitschy. It's part of a strip with a hard-to-see sign, with the post office and a fish market. I came in as a party of one and it was clear they were saving larger tables for bigger groups. I was relegated to a counter seat or the back room. That is always rude to me. I was neglected in the back room for greeting or drink until the owner came out to check tables and saw me with a grimace, drumming the table. I saved time by ordering both drink and food, probably not liked by the waitress but I was tired of the waiting. Loved that spam & eggs was a choice so went for that. They had rye toast & orange marmalade. Enjoyed the food. (Spam overly salty but that's Spam). Price & portions were both fair. Others who sat later than I did were served before me but it was tolerable. Never got a drink refill or a "to go" offer. No one picked up the check, I went to the counter. The line was held up by female ringing bills up, chatting with multiple men patrons, likely local. Would I return? At an off-time and off-season yes. as you read the reviews notice that they are from 2017 vintage as is typical for Yelp. The menu as well is so old and not updated by Yelp that the toast got up and left 5 years ago. This local cafe has been my go to place for almost 20 years and Is the first place I take company and family when they visit. The after remarks are virtually identical. The only complaint I hear is " I can't take what I couldn't finish to go. The motel room does not have a fridge." Too much food for the price? my goodness, what a problem! The staff are old hands with working brains. The coffee pots circulate frequently. The kitchen staff can and will alter menu items to suit your palate. A great stop in Cortez I stopped in shortly after they opened this morning and they already had several customers. A friendly smile and coffee got my day started right. I liked the place, not very large with a fish sort of décor. There were many items on the menu and on the specials board that sounded good. I settled on their SOS on Toast, a childhood favorite of mine. It was quite good, a nice portion size with salty, but not too salty, gravy. It also included a generous amount of meat. This was a great stop, but I knew it would be. I don't get up this way often but it wasn't my first visit. I did look forward to my breakfast today, and I was in no way disappointed. read more

Unfortunately, we had a very bad experience, and as a result of the response of the rude cashier (manager?), we won't be going back. A young server was about to refill our coffee when he accidentally hit the side of the table with the full pot and it broke, spilling hot coffee all over our clothes and our table. The spill managed to avoid our food, so after waiting for the cleanup to finish, which took 15-20 minutes, we finished a few more bites and gathered our belongings. Our bill was sitting at the side of our table, and it, too, was stained with coffee. (We were a bit surprised the management didn't take care of it while we were finishing up) We approached the cashier and explained the situation and asked if we might get a concession of some sort. The cashier replied "Well it was an accident...", and made no offer to take anything off our bill. I asked again if there wasn't something she could do, since we both had obvious coffee stains on our clothes. Finally, she begrudgingly took off the charges for each of our coffees, a total of about $5.00 off on a total bill of more than $30.00. It was an accident, so we didn't blame the server, or expect to get a free meal, since we had eaten a portion of our food. We did, however, feel the management should have treated us with more civility and offered a bit better concession. Given our experience and the fact that the food was mediocre, we would recommend you choose another place. read more

LOVE CORREZ CAFE!!!! I have been going to Cortez cafe since I was 7! I live in Jacksonville now but I make it a point to go down to Cortez for a few days and everyday that I am there, I go to Cortez cafe EVERY morning. Their food is delicious, the staff is always so kind and personable. Not only that but the staff has stayed the same since I was a kid! The place is so cute too! Great classic diner! We went for breakfast and it was fantastic. I had the Hungry Man breakfast, which included eggs, hash browns, and a half-order of biscuits and gravy. Now, I go to a lot of different breakfast places and I always try the biscuits and gravy. I keep ratings on my phone for the biscuits and gravy that I've had from each place. The best I've ever had were from Stack's in Menlo Park, CA, which got a 5 out of 5 rating and helped me set the bar for all of my other ventures. This little diner in Cortez, FL, gets a 4.75 for their biscuits and gravy! The biscuit was cooked perfectly - not chewy or doughy. The gravy was the creamy and rich with lots of crumbled sausage in it. The flavor was outstanding! I will be back! read more
