I wouldn't go for further more next visit for eye treatments except I will only come back for eyelid treatment as long it needed. Please don't get me wrong I consider Dr. Gil Epstein as a decent man and would always take good care of patients right away for eyelid issues. I find it so disappointi high to see how much receptionists has ignored for patients care left us in long delaying office within no details being super loud over there by shouting plus left television on with high volume, no mercy from waiting room left grumpy patients in discomfort positions. I had to take 800mg pill for pain from this morning for migraine and sore. I was shocked to see doctors won't give patients instructions how to take care of eyelid wounds from procedure,eye surgeries, or other treatments for eyes. unfortunately it has became more stretchy without knowing truth from unprofessional employees who works there. Well, not that easy if you are held captive by an HMO insurance carrier. They first sent me to three different but approved on their list ophthalmologists. All three gave me exams but ended up saying that, though there is something definitely going wrong in my eye, weren't really able to diagnose it. So at that point I was finally sent to Fort Lauderdale Retina Institute, an institute consisting of about 8 doctors specializing in comprehensive ophthalmology with particular attention problems of the retina. In short, I couldn't have asked for a more friendly, helpful or professional clerical staff than I found here. When I arrived for my appointment I found that the necessary insurance company paper work referral had not yet arrived. That usually represents a big problem, but not here. Though I offered to drive over to my primary care physician to get one, they told me I didn't have to do that. That they would handle it for me, which they did. This is something most won't do for you. Then, better yet, the medical assistant staff turned out top notch. The whole exam moved right along without those horrid prolonged periods of sitting around waiting for your eyes to dilate. They put dye in my veins, took pictures of the back of my eye, etc., all done with professionalism plus a friendly smile and comforting approach. When I saw my particular doctor, Tirso Mark Lara, an impressive professional, all the diagnostic tests were ready for him. Then, based upon the tests plus his further personal examination was able to, where the other couldn't, diagnose my situation and advise me what was going on in my eye. Though medical science hasn't advanced far enough that much can be done about it, I finally got my answers. Just knowing was, to me, most comforting regardless of whether or not anything can be done about it. In summary everyone I met at Fort Lauderdale Retina Institute, from the clerical staff, to the medical assistants and the doctors were not only top notch on top of their game professionals but also people with a comforting, caring human approach.

The had me see the attending on that day and he was Dr. Dhala .He was very easy to talk to and his soft composure seemed like a big help at a very trying time. My retina was detached and my vision out of that eye was not good at all. I had been instructed to give them $300 for the visit. I was totally impressed with his very nice and well done waiting room and examining rooms. This looked like a First Class Operation and equipment. There were Technicians and helpers for the helpers.The Office personnel was abundant. There were Appointment Setters, Cashiers, Greeters and of course a Boiler room with women whose jobs were to deal with the Insurance Companies, the coverage, coverage limits & deductibles. After my Tests were done and watching the Retina Institute in action, I felt very comfortable that when Dr. Dhala had satdown & instructed me to have Surgery in a day or two. His surgical director had asked me all the important questions what was not about my previous problems or allergies or any fears at all? Nope they were all about Insurance, deductibles and Co-Pays and Fees. I had not even finished with the Dr Dhala before the Staff had told me that my deducible was $10,000 and I had a Policy to cover the $10,000 Co-Pay. The problem was that the Co-Pay Insurance policy could take up to 90 days to get paid. They told me that If I could give them $8,000 in cash they would perform the Surgery. The Office was very nice and they blamed it on the Hospital that was where they were doing the surgery. I immediately drove to Miami to Baskin Palmer Institute and had the Surgery the next day, The Surgery was pretty involved and I followed through and My Eye was very damaged. I went to Retina Institute about 18 months later as I had new Insurance and there were procedures that Dr. Dhala said that could possibly work. The bottom line is they did work on every procedure on both eyes were still not working. I took a rest from the Retina Eye Institute of Ft.Lauderdale and went to make a Appt. and I was TOLD THAT I WAS NO LONGER WELCOME...WTF? Please do not be lured in by the Offices and the large Staff at the main Hwy 1 Ft.Lauderdale location. I have been in the Plantation Office and it does not have the Money People that the main office does, so your Appointment will be a follow up at that location because you are already a Customer. Dr. Dhala is part of a money making machine and even though his religious beliefs are suppose to be one of ethics & Compassion to all men, and it is only after the Check Clears and his needs are met first.

Lets update my review, the techs do everything, I mean everything....from doing the eye test that you look into where you pick one or is two better. This meeting with the tech is one of your encounters with techs doing everything. So, in the first room they start the sales pitch to get you to do some extra test that cost extra money. If you say yes, they immediately bring the credit card scanner into room so you can pay NOW. Like paying at the end is so hard, like you are some dead beat that won't pay. Now you leave first room with the tech to a back area waiting room to wait for next tech. You get into the next room and more talks about up selling things go on before or right around when the Dr comes in. The doc does a few small things to look at your eyes and they talk about things that maybe wrong with your eyes or not(I got a second opinion which leads me to make that statement) Doc leaves the room and the tech finishes the sales pitch with brochures and the cost of said procedures. If you don't book that day they will call you to see when you would like to book it. I have had 2 upsell procedures where I believed I needed what they were telling me, and....like I explained earlier, I needed to pay right there in the exam room with the CC reader before I could receive the upsell procedure. So this year, the upsell procedure was $1800 and $3600!!!!! Cash or card!!!! This prompted me to get a second opinion.... I did not tell the Dr I went to anything at all about my visit to the other eye doc visit. The second opinion doc said that I had a very mild case of what the Hollywood eye institute lead me to believe that it was way BAD and would get even worse if not treated with this expensive procedure. The 2nd opinion doc recommended about $30-40 of over the counter things to fix it...vs $1800-3600!! SOOOOOOOO...... I take out the brochures that were given to me and asked if these procedures were necessary, much to my surprise the Dr stated that one of the procedure wasn't even relevant to my eyes because it treated for something I didn't even have. The other procedure was kinda relevant ish if you wanted to spend $1800 instead of the $30-40 that I did end of doing. I mean, let's do the least invasive procedure first...no? Three weeks ago, I had a full eye examination with Dr. Wise, an ophthalmologist (MD) in Florida. Since I have worn glasses since high school, all I needed at this visit was a new prescription after losing my glasses. Last year, I also had a full exam at LensCrafters in Aventura, where the front desk clearly explained all costs and insurance coverage before my appointment. That visit was handled transparently and professionally. At MyEyeDr, however, the front desk did not explain what my insurance would or would not cover. During my appointment, a technician took retinal images without informing me that this would result in a $44 charge. I should have been told in advance and given the choice to decline. In addition, I was charged $140 for a contact lens fitting that was never discussed with me beforehand. The optometrist attempted multifocal lenses, which did not work for me. I was the one who had to suggest the lens setup I normally use (one lens for distance), and only then did he agree it would work. This left me feeling the fitting was unnecessary and not worth the fee. At checkout, I was presented with a bill of $640 that included these undisclosed charges. I was not prepared for such an amount and chose not to proceed with the purchase. The interaction with the sales associate afterward was uncomfortable and unprofessional. Because I was not informed of these additional services or fees beforehand, I am requesting a refund of the $44 retinal image fee and the $140 contact lens fitting fee. I believe this is a fair resolution given the lack of transparency and communication at my appointment. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.
