Kind of over rated and expensive. Also the decor is Blah old fashioned.

When we got here, they told me they only had me for Saturday! I was NOT a happy camper! Apparently despite they took my money months ago and sent a booking confirmation of the correct date, someone changed in the system a week before my travel date and removed my reservation for Friday night. Luckily they were able to find another room to accommodate us, but annoyed that we literally will have to check out the next day and move into our booked room. They can't even move our stuff for us because they are so understaffed, so we literally had to checkout in the morning, put our stuff back in our car and check-in at 4 pm. Ugh, rant over! Ok, so about the rooms (since I had the pleasure of staying in 2 separate units). Nothing flashy or spectacular about this place but they do have all of the essentials and the rooms are clean and well-kept. The beds are surprisingly comfortable but not so much of the pullout couch. The queen suit 1 BR had a full kitchen, 1 Bathroom (access in the bedroom which is poorly designed since you have to walk through the bedroom to get in), 1 queen bed in the bedroom, and a pullout couch in the living room. For the other suit (we stayed at room 214/216), it's a 1 BR with 2 Bath, much bigger but only has a kitchenette. This was much better setup and had space in the entryway for ski/snowboard equipment. The unit seem to had new carpeting and has a nice view of the mountain and stream. Amenities-wise, they have a outdoor heated pool which opened 3-9 pm in the winter, a laundry room ($2 quarters for 1 load - same building as the office), a library room with books, limited DVD, coffee & tea and small workout gym (downstairs from office). Location-wise, it's at the end of Rt 4, intersection with Rt 100. There's a BBQ restaurant and bar across the street as well as a gas station. For skiers/boarders, it's about 15 min drive to Killington Ramshead lodge. If you have loaded pass, you can take the Skyship gondola to the mountain much closer (5 min drive) to Bear Mountain. Overall we are happy with this place despite the reservation mixed-up. Timeshare resorts are slim picking for ski mountains so will definitely stay here again.

However, the Salt Ash Inn blew us all away and we loved our stay! We arrived late Friday night, and the owner left all of our room keys on the counter for easy check-in. We had all of the rooms booked since we were such a large group, so we had the common area downstairs to ourselves and hung out late into the night. I believe one of the rooms on the second floor houses staff, but aside from that, no one else was occupying the rooms during our stay. The common area is really nice: there's a pool table, a fire place, a bunch of seating and tables, and even a bar. There is also a large speaker that guests can utilize until 9pm. We visited in early February when the temperatures were expected to be as low as -7, and the most common complaint about this place was the faulty thermostats, so we prepared for the worst and brought all of our warmest clothing. Our very first observation, after turning on the thermostats in each of the rooms as high as they would allow (68 degrees), was that the rooms heated up quickly. It didn't take long for the rooms to reach a comfortable temperature. We all slept comfortably, without using any extra blankets or layers of clothing, to our great but pleasant surprise. The beds are CRAZY comfortable, too. I slept in the Green Mountain room on the 3rd floor and it appeared that all of the mattresses were Tempurpedics. The shower in that room is quite small, but the water heated up quickly. Your best bet is bringing your own toiletries, as they are not provided. There's just a one-size-fits-all soap in the showers that I opted out of using. Clean towels were on every bed when we arrived, and each bathroom has a hair dryer. We booked this place for its proximity to Killington, where we all skiied on Saturday and Sunday. It was less than 30 minutes from the mountain. In terms of bars/ restaurants/ civilization, the Salt Ash Inn is essentially in the middle of nowhere; expect to drive a bit if you plan on going out for meals. We discovered a much more happening bar + restaurant scene right near the mountain, so plan accordingly if that's what you're looking for. As a large group, we were content with hanging out in the common area of the inn with our own drinks and food. You should be prepared to drive yourself if venturing outside of the inn; the area is incredibly desolate (at least in the dead of winter) and I wouldn't imagine that calling an Uber is an option. We drove at least 20 minutes every time we went out for a meal. The coffeemaker in the kitchen was free for us to use, but there was no kitchen staff onsite during our stay. Therefore, I cannot speak to the less than desirable reviews I read about the Salt Ash Inn breakfast situation. All in all, I would 1,000% percent stay at the Salt Ash Inn again. It is a really fantastic accommodation for large groups! The common area can get quite loud, so if you aren't booking the entire inn, you definitely run the risk of staying at the same time as a group that occupies the space late into the night. I would book this place again in a heartbeat!

It was a great landing place for my vacation of hiking, meditation, kayaking, yoga etc. It is 20-30 minutes drive to some great lakes, hikes and quaint towns near by: Woodstock, Killington, Okemo, Rutland, Ludlow. I rented a car to get there from the NY/NJ area. I wanted to take Amtrak to Rutland and rent and car. But the timing of the train is TOTALLY misaligned with the open times of the nearest rental car places. You absolutely need a car to get around the area! I did not see too many people around the inn since it was August and not ski season. There were some guests who came and went but it was super low key and quiet most of the time. Parking was close, available and safe. The wifi worked great and well enough for me to binge watch shows on my laptop. The cell service was not great, but once I turned on wifi calling it was all good. The Notch room, where I stayed, is cozy with a private bathroom. It's a step above no frills but clean and comfy enough if you want to sleep in a bit. There was a window fan, but I did not need it since it was 60-50 degrees in the mid August evenings. The kitchen/dining area was nice but I rarely saw anyone who worked there. There seemed to be coffee each morning and there was always hot water for tea. I mostly ate out but also brought lots of snacks for hiking/breakfast, etc. For the vegans out there, there are several places in the neighboring towns that have decent options (Du Jour VT, Java Baba, the Rutland food co-op, Mojo Cafe, Garlic, Soulfully Good Cafe, Mont Vert Cafe, Roots the Restaurant, Little Harry's, Kelvans, Yellow Deli). Good thing I did not need much attending to from management but when I needed to communicate I contacted them by dialing 200 on the house phone in the lobby. I also had good luck connecting with them via the AirBnB app. Overall, a good, adorable, low frills place to land if you are planning to explore the area's beauty and natural wonders.

We booked through Killington Mountains central reservation system online. It was a deal called "Snow Blind" where you have no idea where you will be staying until after you've paid your non-refundable bill in full. I knew from the price ( a little over $100 per night) it would be utilitarian... But run down, smelly, disgusting I was not prepared for. Budget does not need to mean dirty. Our blankets were stained with cigarette holes. The wallpaper was peeling at every seam. There were nails in the wall where pictures no longer hung. But of everything that was wrong with that room the smell was the worst. It smelled like an entire football teams sweaty socks. We tried to stay and deal with it since we had already paid over $100 per night but as 3 am approached and I couldn't sleep, couldn't stop scratching and realized that hell would freeze over before I showered in that room. I got up, put my coat on and told my husband I was sleeping in the car. In January. In Vermont. My 9 year old begged to go with me and within minutes my husband and I had packed the car, strapped the kids in and escaped the fourth corner of hell. We finally wound up at the Best Western in Killington/Mendon and the manager cut us a break on the first "night" since by this time it was 5:30 in the morning. We paid about 2 thirds more for that room but it was absolutely worth it and there was no comparison in the quality and cleanliness not to mention that the Best Western serves breakfast in the AM with some hot items like waffles. Before getting married I renovated and ran a family hotel so I am sympathetic to the challenges. I would never write a negative review for something small or an attempt to accommodate the guest... But what I experienced was an absolute indifference to the experience of the guest. There was NO effort to provide clean or comfortable accommodations. Some scrubbing and febreeze would have helped immensely and that isn't exactly cost prohibitive. How about spending a $100 on new blankets, bedspreads and a gallon of paint? As I say there was NO effort to clean or maintain that room, nor has there been for quite a long time. This is not a case of the previous guests trashing the room. No, this neglect has clearly gone on for a long time. It is a shame because the hotel looked cute enough from the outside. On a bright note Killington Central Reservations refunded our money promptly. I have only given one star since there was a roof and four walls.
