    Salt Ash Inn - Kitchen

A friend of mine booked this place for the weekend for our group of 20, and I've gotta say-- I was…read morea little nervous after reading some of the reviews on here. However, the Salt Ash Inn blew us all away and we loved our stay! We arrived late Friday night, and the owner left all of our room keys on the counter for easy check-in. We had all of the rooms booked since we were such a large group, so we had the common area downstairs to ourselves and hung out late into the night. I believe one of the rooms on the second floor houses staff, but aside from that, no one else was occupying the rooms during our stay. The common area is really nice: there's a pool table, a fire place, a bunch of seating and tables, and even a bar. There is also a large speaker that guests can utilize until 9pm. We visited in early February when the temperatures were expected to be as low as -7, and the most common complaint about this place was the faulty thermostats, so we prepared for the worst and brought all of our warmest clothing. Our very first observation, after turning on the thermostats in each of the rooms as high as they would allow (68 degrees), was that the rooms heated up quickly. It didn't take long for the rooms to reach a comfortable temperature. We all slept comfortably, without using any extra blankets or layers of clothing, to our great but pleasant surprise. The beds are CRAZY comfortable, too. I slept in the Green Mountain room on the 3rd floor and it appeared that all of the mattresses were Tempurpedics. The shower in that room is quite small, but the water heated up quickly. Your best bet is bringing your own toiletries, as they are not provided. There's just a one-size-fits-all soap in the showers that I opted out of using. Clean towels were on every bed when we arrived, and each bathroom has a hair dryer. We booked this place for its proximity to Killington, where we all skiied on Saturday and Sunday. It was less than 30 minutes from the mountain. In terms of bars/ restaurants/ civilization, the Salt Ash Inn is essentially in the middle of nowhere; expect to drive a bit if you plan on going out for meals. We discovered a much more happening bar + restaurant scene right near the mountain, so plan accordingly if that's what you're looking for. As a large group, we were content with hanging out in the common area of the inn with our own drinks and food. You should be prepared to drive yourself if venturing outside of the inn; the area is incredibly desolate (at least in the dead of winter) and I wouldn't imagine that calling an Uber is an option. We drove at least 20 minutes every time we went out for a meal. The coffeemaker in the kitchen was free for us to use, but there was no kitchen staff onsite during our stay. Therefore, I cannot speak to the less than desirable reviews I read about the Salt Ash Inn breakfast situation. All in all, I would 1,000% percent stay at the Salt Ash Inn again. It is a really fantastic accommodation for large groups! The common area can get quite loud, so if you aren't booking the entire inn, you definitely run the risk of staying at the same time as a group that occupies the space late into the night. I would book this place again in a heartbeat!

It was a great landing place for my vacation of hiking, meditation, kayaking, yoga etc. It is 20-30 minutes drive to some great lakes, hikes and quaint towns near by: Woodstock, Killington, Okemo, Rutland, Ludlow. I rented a car to get there from the NY/NJ area. I wanted to take Amtrak to Rutland and rent and car. But the timing of the train is TOTALLY misaligned with the open times of the nearest rental car places. You absolutely need a car to get around the area! I did not see too many people around the inn since it was August and not ski season. There were some guests who came and went but it was super low key and quiet most of the time. Parking was close, available and safe. The wifi worked great and well enough for me to binge watch shows on my laptop. The cell service was not great, but once I turned on wifi calling it was all good. The Notch room, where I stayed, is cozy with a private bathroom. It's a step above no frills but clean and comfy enough if you want to sleep in a bit. There was a window fan, but I did not need it since it was 60-50 degrees in the mid August evenings. The kitchen/dining area was nice but I rarely saw anyone who worked there. There seemed to be coffee each morning and there was always hot water for tea. I mostly ate out but also brought lots of snacks for hiking/breakfast, etc. For the vegans out there, there are several places in the neighboring towns that have decent options (Du Jour VT, Java Baba, the Rutland food co-op, Mojo Cafe, Garlic, Soulfully Good Cafe, Mont Vert Cafe, Roots the Restaurant, Little Harry's, Kelvans, Yellow Deli). Good thing I did not need much attending to from management but when I needed to communicate I contacted them by dialing 200 on the house phone in the lobby. I also had good luck connecting with them via the AirBnB app. Overall, a good, adorable, low frills place to land if you are planning to explore the area's beauty and natural wonders.

It was a blast and the hotel was quite pleasant for the genre (mid-range, family friendly). Pros: - There's a nice common room downstairs with a fireplace, where we were able to gather with a big group of friends and share dinner. It's also where breakfast is served in the a.m. - Breakfast service begins at 6 a.m. -- great for those who need an early start. - My kiddos love "Hotel Breakfast" as they call it, and this was no exception. There are two DIY waffle irons with lots of wonderfully unhealthy toppings; hot mini omelettes, sausage, and potatoes; muffins, bagels, toast; cold cereal and oatmeal; fruit salad and whole fruit. - We either had very quiet neighbors or the walls are reasonably well soundproofed. - There's a small, heated pool. It's hyperchlorinated as most hotel pools are, but a nice place to congregate and relax with friends after skiing. - There's a small, but adequate gym -- and a conference room should you need it. - The hotel adjoins a shopping complex that includes a Hannaford's supermarket, an Office Depot and a Michael's. Convenient for friends who had to find poster board for a school project due the following Monday. And we picked up fruit trays and dessert for our team dinner. - The hotel is dog friendly! We traveled without our pup this time, but did get to hang with some great guest canines. This is a massive plus in our book. - Beds were quite comfortable and staff were nice! Two people even dressed up as Santa and Mrs. Claus to say hello to the kids at dinner. :) Cons: - The elevator was out of order during our stay, so those of us staying on the third floor with lots of ski gear to carry up and down got a GREAT workout. - The pool is quite small, more of a cooler-than-usual hot tub than anything else -- so don't expect to swim laps. - There's no fan or ventilation in the bathroom. After four showers, it gets pretty steamy. Neutral: - It's about 30 minutes from Killington Mountain. There are more proximate, dog friendly hotels (e.g. Killington Mountain Lodge) and Airbnbs, but Hampton Inn Rutland may be better priced. - Our room temperature defaulted to 68 or 69 F. I love that it's eco-friendly and it was a good temperature for putting on ski gear -- but we usually keep our home a bit warmer than this. You can change the temperature of course, but ours kept defaulting to the cooler setting at night. - We're not big TV watchers, but for those who are, I think you need to sign in to Netflix, Disney+, etc... with your own account logins. The hotel does not have its own subscriptions. Overall, this was a great, budget-friendly place to stay with a group!

The TV is so small (estimate 36 inch ) and in the corner so far away. No fridge and when I called for ice the told me it was on a different floor but we had no ice bucket, it took them over a hour and a half to deliver one. The bathroom had terrible lighting and my wife couldn't put her makeup on. The entire suite is very old and needs a major upgrade before i stayed here again.

We had the top accommodation ( nicknamed the penthouse ) all to ourselves and at first glance, we found it to be really nice. The building itself is quite old, but the space is overall well maintained and the rooms were large as well as nice. The space had more than enough room for all of us as well as a decently sized kitchen and a living room. The amount of room we were given was more than sufficient for 8, but we were without water for the entire stay. It was revealed after we checked out that a plumber had uncovered a leak in the pipes which was why the water was failing to get to our unit at the top, but overall, it left us feeling very discouraged as we couldn't shower, wash dishes, or even flush our toilets. We were compensated $100 at the end and were allowed to use another room's shower for the second night ( not the first though since they were fully booked ), but the first night definitely felt rough as we had skiied and snowboarded all day without the ability to shower. The food for breakfast was pretty decent - I enjoyed the complementary meal both days, the first day being a buffet style and the second day being more of an order whatever you'd like due to the smaller crowd. It was pretty standard with eggs, bacon / sausage, pancakes / French toast, and a variety of juices as well as coffee. I would only not recommend the French toast as it was just like bread dipped in egg rather than having the actual flavor of French toast. Overall, I wouldn't mind booking the space again as the staff were kind enough and doing their best, but probably not with the penthouse out of fear of not having water again.

Lots and lots of history here !! I also learned that for here, the "first floor" means one flight up from the lobby, and the "first floor" is NOT on the ground floor nor where the lobby is. Learn something new everyday. In fact, this inn does not appear to have rooms on the ground floor or where the lobby is, but if they do, I just don't know where that would be. The dining room, kitchen and bar appear to be what exists on the main floor. Regardless of all that, our room upstairs was beautifully appointed and spacious, and our king-size bed with its fluffy pillows was so inviting and comfortable. It was beautiful !! We slept so very well. I wish we had booked for more than one night. Our room rate included a warm-cooked breakfast the next morning. For an additional fee, we ate our dinner at the Vic Tavern, as well. (Those will be reviewed under the Vic Tavern.) The owners were very nice and friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed speaking with them and staying at their inn. We'd come back here in a heartbeat, so if we are ever fortunate enough to return to Vermont, we'd easily return to Woodstock and this lovely B&B.

It was quite expensive for what you get. We had room 2 which has its own private deck and living area. Really enjoyed the deck. The biggest issue was the bathroom was tiny. My wife found it impossible to shave in the shower and the sink was so small I couldn't fill a water bottle, even if tilted. The road noise might annoy some people as well.
