in the interest of full disclosure, I have extensive training in conservation (museum) framing, one of several odd skills I picked up along the way. there are busy walls at my house including a rogue's gallery of family photos down the hallway, but I still have sleeves of art in need of framing. it was my first visit to the Corner Frame Shop, and I wanted to start slowly. we began with an inexpensive poster for the Pine Cove cabin that just needed glass replaced. pretty straightforward. but, I also brought a poster screen-printed on foil for a show at Galerie 89 (Lyon, France 1976) by French artist Michel Granger, a much trickier project. we spent more than a while tossing design ideas around. her approach is very different from mine but in the end, we did it (more or less) her way. it came out exceptionally well. another thing I picked up along the way was how to get out of my own way. her coolest suggestion was to mount (spray adhesive and a vacuum press) the poster on foam core and bevel cut the edge from outside to inside. that gives the piece dimension: it appears to float in the frame, a pretty neat trick I hadn't seen before. looks killer in my office and the whimsical, thought-provoking image sets the right mood when I'm working. read more

Had a few things framed here and every time I pass the store, I remember how beautifully they turned out. One was a photo of my late mother framed in a shadow box, and underneath the photo I put a photo of her gravesite with the inscription. Alongside I had them mount a couple of flowers from her funeral with a few dried leaves lying at the bottom of the shadow box. Beautiful job. They also museum-mounted a collector's item Indian piece from the 1930s with a hand-turned frame and airtight glass so the portrait wouldn't disintegrate. Absolutely the worst experience I have ever had at a business I have ever had. I brought in a family heirloom to be framed and not only did it take a week longer than was promised, but this irreplaceable photo was also damaged when whatever the glue they used to mount the photo somehow leaked through to the front leaving what resembled a coffee stain across at least a quarter of the photo. When I returned to discuss the issue with the owner I was told that there is always a risk involved in their process and that if the photo was so important that I shouldn't have given it to them to begin with. I just got some photos for christmas that i needed to be framed, my roommate informed me of a frame place down the street. We walked in and stood there for a second to wait to be greeted by the owner who was sitting 5 feet from the entrance. After a couple seconds that passed, he seemed to be busy with his conversation so I started to meander into the next room. I was yelled at by the dude and told that was not the room for the gallery. I am an adult, not offended at being yelled at. Its also Leucadia so people get a pass for being kooky. I said, i wasnt looking for the gallery so that was ok and then he looked back and started staring at his papers. Not sure if the person he was talking to worked there or not but she felt the akwardness and looked up at me. and greeted what i had to say with a smile. So we walked into the gallery as we were supposed to and then realized this is why I buy stuff on amazon. We walked out with an exit that was as rude as our greeting. I am still not sure this place actually sells frames as we never really got to it. Either way, I will certainly be asking for this Tish character if I ever decide to come back. read more

It had not been started. Returned after another week only to find that the photo had not been trimmed although my instructions were clear and explicit. On my third visit it had been adequately matted and framed. I would have expected that a photograph would have a desk stand - I had not asked but assumed that would be the norm. The frame was arranged only for wall mount. I decided not to return for a fourth time and accepted it, bought a cheap backing from a drug store and changed it out myself. read more

I brought in a painting to be framed in a "picture box" mode, and after discussing it, Morgan and I decided to use matting instead. But when I received it a week later, it didn't look like I wanted. I had a picture that I wanted framed and Michaels had announced a "60%" off sale, so I took it there. I selected a frame from the second cheapest group and they said the retail price for the framing would be over $1000, but with my 60% off it would be around $400. I actually didn't even really like the frame, but didn't want to choose one from the higher priced categories so I took back my picture and said I would think about it. I found the Corner Frame Shop here on Yelp and decided to go get an estimate from them. I took the picture in and told them what Michael's was planning on doing with it (which included framing over a painted portion because the paint was uneven) and asked how much they would charge for the same sort of thing. The owner told me he wouldn't do it that way and walked over and brought back a beautiful frame that matched the painting perfectly! He told me how he would mount it and how he would not frame over the painted frame, etc. I was MUCH happier with his idea and was even more thrilled when his RETAIL price was far less than Michaels' "60% off" price! I gave the Corner Frame Shop the job and was absolutely thrilled with the end result. My picture looks gorgeous! It just goes to show the difference that an expert artist makes - even when it comes to framing! read more

I live in the Encinitas area and used to drive by the shop all the time, then stopped in and met Morgan. I'm an art lover, especially surf and ocean stuff, I volunteer with Surfrider.
