My cousin and I were having lunch. The music was great from the classic 80s, 90s and 2000s Slow R&B Songs. I had the lobster bites which I enjoyed. Seasoned to perfection. My cousin had the Cajun Shrimp Pasta. Looking at her entree, I plan on coming back to have order that one. Of course, I've brought back take out for my boyfriend and he enjoyed his Smash Burger. I have ALL the feels for this review for this black owned restaurant. There was ALOT going on during our visit on 7/16/26. We arrived on time for our 7 p.m. group reservation. We waited a little bit to be seated. When seated, you just have to look around. It's such a beautiful & cozy atmosphere inside. The place is not that big but I understand on the other side is a speakeasy. They have standard seating and booth seating which includes a big booth in the back for a large group. There is also a bar. The place was completely full! I loved the wall decor especially the magical wall painting with the black woman on it (see pic). Ronald was our server and as many reviewers have stated, he was a good server, providing service but good banter also. We ordered our drinks & noticed they were delayed. We asked Ronald about it and he explained they were "backed up". Lemondrop was good, unfortunately out of cherries that were requested. My friends got the Sangria and the Roy St. Lemonade and they enjoyed their drinks. We ordered our food and it was also delayed, we didn't get our food until 8:45 p.m. which is way too long. Food was great, hot and flavorful. We got the crab stuffed salmon, Slow-Braised Short Rib (super tender) and the cajun seafood pasta (I had them add a lobster tail to it which they cut up and put in the pasta). Delicious. There was a beautiful young lady that came to check on us a couple of times which was nice. There was a live saxophonist playing when we first arrived and he was good. I clapped for him when nobody else did and then his wife saxophonist came in later on and stole the show! She was engaging, went around with her sax playing, sitting in the booths with people, it was a whole VIBE, do you hear me? There was also a trumpeter playing with them too. I was happy to tip them - both saxophonists talked to me individually as we were sitting right in front where they were performing. They thanked me for the energy which means a lot to performers, it lets them know you are enjoying their performance which they work hard for. They are there on Wednesdays & Thursdays. What is weird is that they have dessert but you have to ask about it, there is no menu that shows the options. The only way I knew they served desserts is that I saw pics of them on Yelp and Google. The cake I wanted (butter cake) they didn't have, only a selection of cheesecakes. I really liked this place. I think it's only been open for about 6 months. The colorful, lifelike mural on the outside of the place is breathtaking. I had no problem finding parking right in front of the place. They definitely need to work on time management, it shouldn't take that long for drinks/food. We noticed when we were waiting on our food that many others didn't have their food either. Other reviews mention this too so I hope in more time of them being open that they fix this. They had ceiling fans on but we got a little warm at times but grant it, it was full capacity in there. The great musical entertainment helped with the wait. Our bill total for three people with 18% gratuity and a percentage for a service charge was $256. Me and Latrice A came on a Sunday afternoon to have brunch. The outside was adorable as I parked my car. There is a lovely painted mural of flowers on the side of the building that was magical. The establishment is a little on the small side, but the overall décor is lovely. For brunch, I started with the Truffle Butter Lobster Bites (lobster tossed in truffle butter with chili peppers and ginger sauce) and got the Chimichurri Steak and Frites (grilled steak topped with chimichurri). The menu stated that the steak came with frites, but I got what looked like smashed potatoes instead and that was fine by me. The portion size of the dish did not disappoint and I ended up taking it home to have later as my dinner. The Truffle Butter Lobster Bites were amazing! I can't say I tasted the truffle flavor, but I felt like the chili peppers and ginger sauce overrode it. Truffle is such a subtle flavor, but that said I still enjoyed this dish a lot. Actually had me mad for not ordering some to go as I had a dream about it and woke up mad that I didn't have it. Latrice A and I split the Challan French Toast. This came with a sweet + savory blueberry sausage. The french toast was very good, the sausage didn't work for me. I thought it was on the dry side. While we were eating, the table across from us ordered the french toast. We immediately noticed that their serving was very different from our order as it was cut from much thicker slices of challan bread. We mentioned that to our server and then I believe the manager came over to discuss. As we had already eaten into ours, I showed her the photos so she could see the difference. She explained that she thought the kitchen may have used the slices from the end of the loaf and that could have been the difference. That said, she took it the bill and gave us a 20% credit on the bill. For me this location is a bit of a haul as it is about 30 miles from where I live in the city. But I would maybe do a bit of planning and come during a time when the traffic isn't so bad so I can get those lobster bites and not wake up mad the next day after dreaming about them...HAHAHAHAHAHA! read more

The mural outside is absolutely beautiful and lets you know you're about to experience something special before you even walk through the door. We went on a Wednesday and were pleasantly surprised by live music, which made the night even better. After dinner, we hung out in the speakeasy for a while. Such a chill atmosphere and the perfect place to unwind. I used to live nearby, and if I still did, I'd probably be here every week... and let's be honest, at least half of those visits would be just for that BUTTER CAKE. An Unexpected Upscale Gem in Lansing! I had the pleasure of visiting Cork & Oak in Lansing, Illinois, and I was genuinely impressed from the moment I walked through the door. This restaurant brings a level of sophistication, ambiance, and hospitality that feels more like something you would expect to experience in downtown Chicago. The décor is absolutely beautiful elegant, posh, intimate, and upscale, with the feel of a luxury boutique hotel lounge. The atmosphere reminded me of a wonderful combination of Sip & Savor, Gilt Bar, and The Violet Hour sophisticated without being pretentious, and intimate enough that you can truly relax and enjoy the experience. One of my favorite things about Cork & Oak is the way the space is designed. There are essentially two experiences within the restaurant. One side offers live entertainment, and during my visit we were treated to a live saxophonist, which added such a classy and relaxing touch to the evening. The other side features an intimate 10-seat bar, additional tables and chairs, and a beautiful private two-person reserved seating area that is perfect for a date night or a more intimate evening. And then there was the hospitality. Amanda, my server, was wonderful professional, attentive, timely, and genuinely welcoming. Stephanie, the bartender, was excellent, and the cocktails were truly a highlight of the evening. Tatiana, the host, was equally professional and gracious. Everyone contributed to making the experience feel polished and well cared for without ever making the service feel intrusive. The food was very good, beautifully complemented by an impressive cocktail experience. You can tell that thought has been put into not only what guests are served, but how guests are made to feel while they are there. I also had an opportunity to meet Daryl, one of the owners of Cork & Oak Group, and he was incredibly personable and welcoming. It is always nice to meet ownership and see that the hospitality of the establishment extends from the staff all the way to the top. What impressed me most is that Cork & Oak has created something that Lansing and the surrounding South Suburban community deserves: an elevated, mature, beautifully designed space where you can enjoy great food, excellent cocktails, live music, and sophisticated nightlife without having to travel downtown. Cork & Oak doesn't simply feel like another neighborhood restaurant it feels like a destination. Whether you're planning a date night, celebrating something special, meeting friends for cocktails, or simply looking for an elegant evening with live music, this is absolutely a place worth experiencing. We went Sunday for Brunch and it was interesting to say the least. The wait was 40 minutes if we didn't want to wait we could sit at the bar. We went in and immediately it hits you...the almost warmth. There is no air. The chairs for those dining are very low to the ground and hard to adjust. We went over to the bar it has about five seats so we took the too at the end. It took a while to be tended to because the bartender was very busy. After our orders were taken we waited a while and they brought my friends out a good five minutes before mine. We enjoyed the food. It was delicious! Just recently visited for my husband's birthday. The food was good but what shocked me was the bill at the end. For a party of 2 with just a main dish, side of bread and 3 drinks, our tab was close to $400. I do order top shelf tequila when I get margaritas but I've never had a top shelf drink that cost 75 dollars per glass. When we noticed the oversight we were told that I was charged double but final tab was $50 per drink. I think along with ala cart menu prices they need to do the same with drink prices Im still in shock of the price because it was a small glass and ice filled. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was disappointing from start to finish yesterday, 7/2/26. I ordered the Shrimp & Lobster Fried Rice after seeing the dish advertised on TikTok. The presentation in person looked nothing like what was advertised. I later learned that the impressive presentation shown online is apparently only available on Sundays with the Crab Fried Rice, with Crab sitting on top of rice. Unfortunately, no one informed us of that before we ordered, even though it was obvious we expected the dish we had seen advertised. It felt misleading. Not to mention 2 other customers ordered and thought the same thing. The lemon pepper wings were just ok but also tasted reheated. When the food arrived, it wasn't hot and tasted like it had been reheated rather than freshly prepared. The rice was overcooked, sticky, and clumped together, making the dish unappetizing. For a meal that cost approximately $45, I expected much better quality. Within about two minutes of receiving my food, I let our waiter, Ronald (if I remember his name correctly), know that something wasn't right. His initial response was, "I wish you had told me as soon as I brought it out to you," even though I had only had the plate for about two minutes and had to wait for him to walk back by our table. He eventually spoke with the kitchen and asked if I wanted the dish remade, and he apologized. Still, there was no apology from management, no manager came to speak with us, and no effort was made to offer a discount, refund, or any other gesture of customer service. To make matters worse, the woman I believed to be the manager--an African American, dark-skinned with blonde hair--stood near our table and looked over at us several times but never approached us to ask about our concerns or to attempt to resolve the situation. I can't confirm whether she was the manager, but that was my impression. The entire experience felt like poor customer service from beginning to end. Between the misleading advertising, the poor food quality, and the lack of concern for customer satisfaction, I left extremely disappointed. The only good thing was the drink; high five to the bartender. I will not be returning, and I would caution others not to assume the Shrimp & Lobster Fried Rice will look like the viral TikTok videos. When someone finally showed up, water took another 15 minutes. Almost an hour later, I'm still staring at an empty table. No food. And let's talk math: this place caps seating at 90 minutes. If it takes an hour just to get food out, that leaves maybe 30 minutes to actually eat before you're rushed out the door you reserved a table at. You can't run an hour-long kitchen on a 90-minute clock. Meanwhile, the white couple a few tables over has had a rotating cast of servers stopping by all hour. Coincidence? Maybe. But I know what I saw, and I know how it felt. Pricing's fair (kind of). None of that matters when the basic act of being seen and served apparently depends on who's sitting across from your host stand. You never know who's in your dining room: a food critic, a regular who brings in six-top reservations every month, someone who'll tell every person they know about how they were treated. From the moment I walked through the door, I felt welcomed. The hostess greeted me warmly, and my server a young lady whose name I unfortunately can't remember was attentive, kind, and made the experience even better. I started with the kale salad, which was fresh and flavorful, followed by the chicken sliders, which were delicious. My entrée was the Cajun pasta, and it absolutely did not disappoint. To top it off, I ordered the Wild Berry Sidecar. It was beautiful, refreshing, and one of those cocktails that makes you want to order another. But I did not!!! After reading some of the negative reviews, I couldn't help but think about how quick we are to judge new businesses. From what I understand, Cork + Oak has only been open for a few months. Every new business has growing pains. Imagine if every one of us had our learning moments permanently displayed for the world to criticize. We should absolutely hold businesses accountable, but we should also leave room for growth instead of rushing to tell people not to support them. I don't believe the color of the owner's skin is what should define a business. What matters is their commitment to providing a great experience, listening to feedback, and continuing to improve. During my visit, I saw that effort. Was everything absolutely perfect? No. But perfection isn't what stood out to me--it's the genuine effort, the hospitality, the quality of the food, and the desire to create a great experience. That deserves recognition. Visited Cork & Oats in Lansing on Mother's Day and really wanted to love the experience because the atmosphere and vibe are definitely there. It's a nice neighborhood spot located right in the heart of Lansing, easy to get to, and parking was available which made things convenient. We arrived around 4:30 PM before the main dining area opened at 5 PM, so we were able to sit on the speakeasy side at the bar while we waited. The ambiance was really nice and gave a grown, relaxed vibe. Once the dining side opened, service was a little slow -- which I tried to understand since dinner service was just getting started. Unfortunately, the experience went downhill after the food arrived. I ordered the salmon and potatoes along with a salad, and both dishes had hair in them. Seeing a long strand of hair in my food completely ruined my appetite. I politely showed the waitress, and they took the food back. What was even more disappointing was that when the food came back out, it honestly seemed like the same plate reheated because it was no longer hot. At that point, I couldn't even enjoy the meal anymore. To their credit, they did compensate us for the meals, and I appreciate them trying to make it right. But experiences like that stick with you. I truly want to support Black-owned establishments and see them win, especially when they create spaces with such a great atmosphere and potential. Thursday 7/9, my friend and I visited this location at 8:15 p.m. The atmosphere was nice, the restaurant was clean, and I was greeted at the entrance instantly. The band was nice and engaging. However, the server was also the bartender and was pretty slow, or busy I should say, because she was trying to make drinks and run food for several tables while you all were busy. Our food came about 25 minutes after ordering, even though we ordered drinks first. The drinks tasted flavorless, with just ice and alcohol, which was horrible for wine girls. My friend had a French 75, and I had some special drink. Our mild wings were just regular BBQ wings, nothing special. The oysters and Caesar salad were pretty good. The server never refilled my water, not one time, and when we said the drinks were way too strong, her response was, "Oh, we put two shots of alcohol in all our drinks." We just got Chardonnay She appeared rushed and not really experienced. We boxed the remaining food and left it. My friend and I went to visit this restaurant last Thursday. Our reservation was for 6:00 pm. I got there at 6:00 and was seated almost immediately. Keep in mind, this was not mentioned to us nor is it anywhere on the site. My issue was: 1. Our drinks and food took awhile to come out. Reservations at 6, food at 7, were we expected to be finished eating in 30 minutes? 2. We were still eating, buying food. Even the most upscale restaurants wouldn't have done this. 3. They moved us to another part of the restaurant, a lounge area, even still-- interrupting our dinner abruptly was uncalled for. I met a friend here, neither of us had ever been. When I walked in the door the host was rather short and rude. He didn't say hello...instead went right into asking if I had a reservation. I replied; "Hi no, I don't I'm meeting a friend she's already here seated at the bar." Annoyed with me, he asked for her name to still look up a reservation even though I said no to that question moments before. I repeated she was sitting at the bar and gave her last name to ease the tension to which he annoyingly said "which bar we have two?". Again, I had never been there so I didn't know they had two sides or two bars but I felt bad for not knowing because he made me feel like my not knowing was getting on his nerves. I apologized for not knowing and pulled out my phone to call my friend when another host could sense the awkwardness interjected and said come in I'll help you find her. I think I might've just sat her on this side. On to the bar service. There was no wine or bourbon list which was odd given the establishments name. We sat on the end of the bar away from the wine, I asked the bartender what wine they had and everything was met with the reply of I don't know and walking back and forth to look. My friend had already ordered a glass of white but was advised that they were uncertain of how long the bottle had been open. Given that I couldn't get answers really on the wine I asked for a sidecar. Again, the bartender looked around and asked me what I would like it made with and proceeded to name things that you don't use to make a sidecar like Jamison because they only had a tiny bit of cognac left in the bottle. My friend ordered a manhattan because her wine was really bad. I ordered an old fashioned next and it was ok. The drinks were poorly executed... we also ordered a bottle of water, a San Pelligrino. When we got the bill, the bottle of water was $15! They charged us more for the water than my friends wine. Our total was $99 For four drinks and a bottle of water with the gratuity already added in for us. We agreed that we wouldn't be returning. The music was ok. The one stall bathroom that doesn't have a lock on the entry door was strange. People had to keep guessing if someone was in there. The overall experience was bad. read more
