Horses are brought in using a golf cart in groups of often three at a time. The horses aim to kick and bite each other and all the handlers do is yell at them. If that wasn't bad enough, I watched the lead stablehand lead a very gentle older mare into a stall and when she didn't go he smacked her with the lead rope on her face and she spooked and bashed her head on the overhead beam of the stall - he seemed less than concerned. When horses kick for dinner they throw brooms and other items at the front of the stalls. The stalls frequently smell of heavy ammonia. Horses are constantly escaping their turnouts. Running down fences, bolting out open gates and getting away from handlers with the golf cart. One poor filly even ran the fence and got in with another horse and was kicked, broke her leg and was euthanized. Horses will be horses but there are no changes being made. When these concerned were brought to the owner, she denied that her staff is hard on the horses and claimed her fencing was in working condition and safe. Boarder beware.

We were out of town for a while when the weather was hot, we got a call saying they suspected our mare was colicky, in our absence Kelly walked our mare and cooled her off until she felt better, then checked on her through the night. There have been numerous times that either her or Lisa have been available to help with an abscess or any number of injuries our horses may have managed to acquire. Top quality training is also available at GP- I have taken lessons from both Lisa and Kelly-I love them both!! For the time my husband I were there we felt like we were a part of one big family. Sadly we have had to move, but we take with us many fond and happy memories of our time at Greatful Pines.

Excellent hunter-jumper lesson programs are very rare: in my twenty years of experience, this is the best lesson program I have come across. The intimate barn environment is a breath of fresh air, the barn is beautiful and tidy, and all of the clients, trainers and lesson students are FUN. The instruction by Katherine and the assistant trainers is correct, by the book (George Morris instruction", and is truly unrivaled in its quality. I am a big equitation stickler and all of the people in the lesson program can hold their own- this is due to the exceptional quality of the lesson program. Not to mention the horses. Again, these are the nicest lesson horses I have ever seen. They are happy, healthy, fit, and groomed within an inch of their lives (not to mention they are all loved and adored by clients and working students). They do not have a bad lesson horse in the bunch- most of them are even downright fancy. I wax poetic about this place because it is EXCEPTIONAL and I am so lucky to have found my home here.

They seemed to care more about their business than what the students learn. I was a total beginner, and after an evaluation session, was placed into a group class with people a lot more experienced than I was. The trainer also was not friendly at all. When I asked a her to show me how to tack up, which was only my second time doing it, the trainer got impatient and said "you forgot everything from last time huh?" During another class, the trainer also complained that she thought she'd be riding her own horse instead of teaching today. Hope they improved their training now.

Horse boarding is this area is not cheap at all, but my mom and I found Willowcrest Stables and…read morethought the pricing was more than fair for the value it offered. First off, the location is amazing. It is less than a 10-minute drive from my work in downtown Redmond. I need to emphasize what a benefit this is because most of the horse places are far off in Woodinville or even farther in Monroe. And if you want something close in Kirkland, be prepared to pay more for keeping your horse there than your own mortgage. Every horse gets turned out in a pasture to graze every day and are stalled at night. There are a couple of stalling options including a 16x32 stall and run outdoors for $700 (really good value). The other option is an indoor stable with daily shavings for $800. Boarders also get really generous lockers for storing tack. There are two arenas, one indoor and outdoor. I never rode in the indoor arena for a couple of reasons. The arena is very small and narrow. With a large horse, you have to make a lot of tight turns. Additionally, the wall is made of hard cement material, versus a wood, so if a horse kicked the wall for any reason, this could make for a very bad injury. The outdoor arena is great, but the only problem is that it's outdoors... and we are in Washington. I've enjoyed the outdoor arena in the warmer months, but it's a shame when it rains. There are two round pens for turning your horse out or even riding. One of the best parts about this facility is that there is a trail that goes around the property that's about a mile long. The community itself is incredible. Everyone is really friendly, and you don't get the common barn drama that you will find in many locations. All of the staff members are also knowledgeable and work well with the animals. I'd definitely recommend checking out Willowcrest if you are looking for a place to board your horse. However, I will caution you about the arena situation, given that it rains a lot and then indoor arena isn't great.
