The horses aim to kick and bite each other and all the handlers do is yell at them. If that wasn't bad enough, I watched the lead stablehand lead a very gentle older mare into a stall and when she didn't go he smacked her with the lead rope on her face and she spooked and bashed her head on the overhead beam of the stall - he seemed less than concerned. When horses kick for dinner they throw brooms and other items at the front of the stalls. The stalls frequently smell of heavy ammonia. Horses are constantly escaping their turnouts. Running down fences, bolting out open gates and getting away from handlers with the golf cart. One poor filly even ran the fence and got in with another horse and was kicked, broke her leg and was euthanized. Horses will be horses but there are no changes being made. When these concerned were brought to the owner, she denied that her staff is hard on the horses and claimed her fencing was in working condition and safe. Boarder beware.

This farm camp is so much more than just riding lessons. Kids spend hours learning real horsemanship--caring for the horses, doing groundwork, and understanding what it takes to run a farm. Lisa teaches them everything from horse anatomy and health to tack, equipment, and riding etiquette. They also help take care of the farm's chickens and ducks--looking after broody hens, meeting the chicks when they hatch, and collecting eggs from "their" birds. This program isn't for everyone. If you're looking for a once-a-week class where your child simply shows up, hops on a horse, rides for an hour, and goes home, this isn't that kind of program. It's more of an animal farm lifestyle camp, where kids are given real responsibilities and the freedom to learn through experience. Not all kids may do well with the independence and lack of constant parental supervision, but for those who enjoy hands-on learning and being part of a group it's an incredible opportunity. Do I pay so my kids can clean the horse stall? Yep! And it's worth every penny. Because work ethic, responsibility, and respect for animals (and others) are lessons that go far beyond the barn. But most importantly, my kids (even the teenager) can be just kids at the farm. With all the deadlines and pressure at school and organized sports, the farm is just "simple". Also, where else my kids can witness a tiny bird hatch right in front of them (sometimes on the palm of their hand!) and build a real connection with animals much bigger than themselves through patience, care, and trust.

We've watched her develop greater independence, reliability, work ethic, and both physical and mental resilience, and we couldn't be more proud of who she is becoming. What began as horseback riding lessons has evolved into a formational experience that I now believe every child would benefit from. Lisa has transcended the role of instructor to become a true mentor and significantly positive influence in our daughter's life. Her guidance has helped our daughter flourish in ways that extend far beyond the barn. We feel fortunate to have Halo Hills in our community and wholeheartedly recommend it to parents looking to either introduce their children to horseback riding or to provide them with an environment that naturally builds the confidence, resilience, and life skills that will serve them well in all future endeavors.
