My parents took me here when I was in town. It was exactly what I thought it would be. I got the po' boy sandwich it was wonderful. The service was wonderful and very hospitable. She made sure my water was always full. The overall ambiance was quaint. It was nice to sit in nice air conditioned room when the temperature was hitting the 90's outside. Coonyon's Restaurant Review My dad raved about Coonyon's and wanted to take us there for dinner tonight. We settled in and placed our orders -- I had a small cup of gumbo and a small red beans and rice, Dad ordered the gator bites, and my wife and mother both went with the shrimp and cheese grits. Having spent many years traveling through seven different states, including plenty of time in Louisiana and New Orleans, I've had my share of gumbo. To put it kindly, this wasn't one of the better ones. It lacked the dark roux that gives gumbo its signature flavor, had very little liquid, and mostly consisted of chunks of chicken and okra over a pile of rice. The gator bites were probably the best thing I tried -- even though I only tasted one, it was quite good. The red beans and rice were decent, with the highlight being the sausage, though there were only three or four very thin slices. I'd love to find that sausage again! The shrimp and grits I sampled had good, creamy grits, tasty shrimp, and a tomato-based étouffée-style sauce that worked well together. The waitress was prompt, the food arrived hot and on time, and overall it was a decent experience -- but not quite what I'd consider a true Cajun restaurant. read more

It's worth seeking out this unassuming building with a somewhat hard to navigate parking lot for some of the best Cajun food I've tasted! We started with boudin balls and Louisiana brewed beer and enjoyed crayfish etouffe, shrimp with cheesy grits, and shrimp creole. I went there for my son's birthday dinner the food was not as cajun as we are used to being from Terrebonne Parish Louisiana originally. The red beans were hit and miss some hard some soft, They also use a way to heavy hand on their cajun/ creole food. It doesn't need all the extra that they put . We stopped in for lunch right after they opened. We were the second group of customers. It had a simple southern feel and New Orleans style music. We had boudin balls for an appetizer. We also had BBQ shrimp and grits, beans and rice, and shrimp creole over rice. Everything tastes great. Our server was great, and made great suggestions also. I had always wanted to try this place since first coming to this area. I finally came across it one day and stopped for lunch. I came through the door and stood there waiting for somebody to seat me. While standing there I saw to people wearing green camo clothes in the kitchen arguing. All I wanted was a seat so I found my own. I went to the upper area feeling like I was in a house and sat down. The waitress came over and I placed my order for gumbo and some fried okra. I got my order and well, I wasn't pleased with the looks of the gumbo at all. The shrimp were very small and looked like they've been in this gumbo since yesterday or...very overcooked and the gumbo was slimy. I figured maybe they used lots of orka that may have caused that but the most okra I found was in my fried okra order. The flavor was nothing like any gumbo I've had and honestly I was very disappointed. I didn't finish it. I ate some fried okra which tasted like any fried okra I've had at a tavern. Definitely not homemade but edible. I wanted to try the desert so I asked about there cake. It was a lemon blueberry or raspberry. Anyway, I opted out when I was told that it was shipped in Frozen. I was told the story how the 2 owners bumped heads and the owner that was chef/cook left the business and the remaining owner was running it now. This was more than I wanted to know but helped me understand why nothing on the menu is freshly made or authentic Cajun cuisine. I didn't really expect to pay a decent price for what seemed like canned leftovers. I know this is harsh but really, if you cannot cook then hire somebody that can and keep out of the kitchen. All of the rave reviews of the past were when the Chef/Owner was still there. The place was not very clean, I could see supplies by the fountain drinks area. It was quite a mess. The interior didn't scream Cajon or bayou or anything really. I'll say this, I will go back and try this place again for two reasons. First I hope that they brought in a real Chef cook that knows a bit about Cajon/Creole cooking, making everything fresh rather than whatever this was. Second, I gave an extra salt only because I went here after a period of covid shut downs. I really don't think thats an excuse for bad food but I'll give them that benefit of doubt. read more

Was in the Arkansas boonies on business and found this cajun spot with my NOLA favorites. I had the crawfish pie as an appetizer and they were delicious. For the entree, l ordered blackened catfish with fries and coleslaw. The catfish was seasoned very well and the cajun fries were really good. When in the area, l will definitely eat here again! As most Cajun restaurants go this isn't fancy inside or out and the bar is limited but oh the food! Went twice in three days while visiting Mountain Home and really enjoyed the the true Cajun food. The gumbo was excellent. I got a small bowl and a quarter muffuletta sandwich and had plenty to eat. The second night I tried the bbq shrimp and grits. It was excellent. I read some other reviews about their seafood, and being from Louisiana we had to go try it out ourselves for lunch. Very impressed with the muffuletta, shrimp po-boy, gumbo, & the etoufee! Really really wanted to like this place. I knew what I was going to have before I ever got there crawfish etouffee it was more like soupy. Wife had chicken strips dinner. Chicken was greasy ,fries okay but corn nuggets where the best part. Daughter had crawfish pies(2) only ate one said okay. Grandson is 6 he had shrimp and fries.
