I recently gave Cootie Brown's another chance after a long time away. Prices had gotten high and the food just wasn't great. My first time back was at the original location on Roan St and it was excellent. I then went to the campus location because I knew they had a full bar. The first time we went the service was mediocre but the food was good and I was pleased to see they were carrying Xul beers, out of Knoxville. The reason for this review is because of the 2nd time I went to the campus location. First, I was told I couldn't make double selections for my draft sampler, despite doing it last time I was there. No "we'll do it for you this time" and no "I'm sorry" at all. Just "you can't do that". So, I ordered a single beer and let it go. Next, we ordered our food and we all got half pizzas. I asked for an extra side of the dry rub and bbq sauce for my pulled pork bbq pizza (the Memphis). Again, I've done this several times at the other location with no issue. My friend also asked for a side of the dry rub to put in his bbq chicken pizza (the Beale Street). When our food arrived a different person brought it out without these things, so we asked our server for them when she returned. She went to the kitchen and returned empty-handed to tell us they'd already put those things on the pizza. A) they had not put it on the Beale Street, and B) we asked for extra. The server got our dry rub and I asked for my bbq sauce. Rinse and repeat. She goes to the kitchen and comes back to tell me they put it on the pizza already. I thanked her for checking and let her know I would still like a side of it to dip my pizza in. The fact is, the pizza I got isn't great without the extras. It's kind of dry and bland. But with extras it's delicious. I'm not sure why the staff at this location has an issue with giving customers what they want but after the last experience, I'm doubtful I'll be going back any time soon. And as someone who goes out to eat at actual local restaurants at least twice a week, that is not a net positive for anyone involved. Very disappointing, after a brief redemption. read more

This was one of the hidden gems we found. It was very interesting decor while still being comfortable and inviting. The food at both locations we visited was really good but what I liked best was how many different types and options they offered. At the first location I had a sun-dried tomato burger and was so happy they had vegetarian options. At the second location we had a pizza. Both had great flavor! We intentionally went for both lunch and dinner at two separate locations to see if the food and service was consistent. I'm happy to say they were both excellent! If you happen to be in Johnson City and you're not sure where to eat or your group all want something different than this is the place to go. read more

This location by ETSU was not as good as the Roan Street location. For starters, the service was really slow and poor on a relatively slow day on a Saturday morning at 11:30 am. The tables were sticky... Already? At 11:30am? The nachos we had as an appetizer were good, but the main dishes were honestly terrible. I had the three tacos. The chicken and shrimp were all tough and overcooked. My daughter's Reuben was good, but the hamburger the other person in our party had was overcooked. The bill was $95 for three of us. The worst part was the $20 for three tacos that I could have made better at home. We will pass on Cootie's in the future. My goodness, their homemade chips are delicious and their tamales are outstanding. Their menu is a vast majority of options from southern comforts to Mexican food with mole and a really good verde gravy. Their servings are massive and they are directly outside the campus for easy access to ETSU and the dome and football stadium. I really enjoyed their food. Our server was Sam who never checked our drinks or how we were doing... even after our food arrived. Nothing. We watched Sam follow another server into the women's restroom 2x and then go outside while we were waiting. My friend got up and told the people at the desk we needed refills. They went outside to get Sam. I finally got pitchers from the drink station and refilled our drinks. Sam showed up at the end of our meals with 2 drinks.... for 4 people..? I explained I already refilled the drinks, but would like to go boxes. Sam turned around and walked away. We waited - no boxes. I looked behind us and saw a stack of to go boxes. I grabbed a couple and gave them to my friends. Sam returned with no boxes. I said, "I already got the boxes" Sam said, "Well, I don't really need to be here then!" Obviously Sam needs a different job or some ethics training. Whatever the case, I won't be returning any time soon. I love the other Cootie Browns on N.Roan St., but this one has disappointed me both times I've been there. The service was good. But neither meal pleased me. First time was the black bean burger (had no flavor and fell apart, had to eat it with a fork) and the second time was the fish tacos. The fish on the tacos was four tiny, deep fried balls of cod. I have gone to this location several times. I'm always disappointed in the parking. The lot was completely full with 5 open spaces for Togo orders at the front of the building. So I pull into one of them so I can eat at their place of business. I notice the Togo sign says " Togo only...others will be turned into Tin cans". I guess that's one way to lose business. We love Cootie Brown's BUT recently we've noticed a few changes ... why try to fix what is not broken!?? We went tonight and our waitress was nothing but kind and accommodating. The girl that sat us made us feel like we were a burden, not sure what that was about because we wanted to sit by the window. Oh well. I ordered a Prickly Pear Margarita, I asked it not to be as sweet so maybe an extra shot of tequila and less nectar. It arrived and it was sweeter than the last time I ordered it a few weeks ago lol. I felt bad and didn't want to send it back but my husband insisted. So, I said, maybe just add a splash of nectar this time and it'll be great. She brings it, and the bartender added soda water and some other stuff and now it just tasted bitter and weird. Once again, I felt bad because I can't stand soda water LOL. I told her, I wish I was asked first bc now I had to return it again, which is never my intention. Waitress was so precious and said it was totally fine. We get our conch fritters which are absolute bomb but Cooties!!!! Why did you change your chips to a glorified Pringle!? We used to love the chips that were half crispy half soft, perfection. Now they are just all crispy, kinda weird. Crispy is not a bad thing but this is NOT the OG chips Cooties served in the past. What's up with that!? And now, my beloved Mexican pizza used to have the incredible carmelized garlic cloves which made me love this pizza, now they are just chopped up random tidbits. I'm not just saying this yall, Cooties knows what I am talking about. Why are you guy changing such an amazing brand you started off with? We love you guys!!! Don't change! What's going on? Anyway, just my two cents, please get some incredible cocktails instead of insanely syrupy sweet ones. This bar could do so well, the cocktails are just below average. Went to Cootie Browns Saturday during Parents Weekend. Never been here but had high hopes. Came in and had a 45 minute wait, not crazy being it was parents weekend and ETSU home game, but game was still going and several open tables available. Once we got seated server was very friendly and quick to greet us and take app orders. We tried the Maytag Chips, which were awesome! Also tried the nachos and they were enjoyed as well. Placed the order for entree's and had a very very long wait, but again possibly kitchen backed up due to game day. When food was served we noticed that half of our food was cold and others seemed fresh. I had the wings and they were ok but did appear to have been under the warming light a little too long. I ordered Memphis ribs with Brussel sprouts and asparagus. Each was very good. The interior has a high ceiling with an industrial overtone. Brought our out of town friends along and had a fabulous lunch on a quiet Saturday in August. Hubby enjoyed his Jerk Chicken sandwich with chips. Love the jerk sauce as a dip for the chips! I tried their Muffuletta (half sandwich) with chips. Delicious! Never had it as a pressed sandwich but will always eat it this way from now on. We tried the new location near the ETSU campus. What a wonderful surprise! The menu is the same as their 1st location. My companion had their 'fried bologna sandwich. I tried the crab cake appetizer, it was better than most places. The prices are average for my area. Service was exceptional but it was a slow Monday. Reservations are not usually needed for small groups. Overall, you should check out their eclectic menu. Will return again soon. read more

Cootie Browns offers a wide selection of offerings on their menu. I have tried many different selections and all have been very good. On my last visit I tried their pizza, and while they are not a pizza restaurant per se, it was one off the best pies I have ever had. This comes from a pizza snob. Service couldn't have been better on any of my visits, cleanliness has always been excellent, and while I am always too full from my meal, desserts look amazing and I am determined to try them sometime. The parking lot is plenty spacious, they have a nice size bar top, and the staff is friendly. The black bean burger is my go-to on the menu, but the pizza is a close second! They are taking extra precautions during this time due to Covid-19 too. You really won't be disappointed dining at Cootie's! Saw some mixed reviews on this place, but decided to give it a go. We went on a Friday around 6:45 which was peak time. Wait was 35 minutes but we were able to sit in our car and wait to be texted. We were seated in one of the open window booths and it was so nice because it was cool and rainy out. On advice from some of the Yelp reviews I had read before coming, we ordered the Reuben sandwich with chips and a half Caribbean pizza. Both were out of this world delicious! Loved every bite! Next we tried the key lime pie and peach pie. The key lime was much better than the peach. although both were excellent. Our waitress was super nice and attentive. So many options for great food here! Not as eclectic of an environment as the original on Roan, but better food & drink selection here. Great draft beer selection as well as cocktails. Highly recommend both the white & red sangrias. Also better service generally. Pizzas, burgers, salads, nachos, sandwiches are all excellent. Good brunch menu on Sundays. If you're visiting in the fall, definitely don't skip the pumpkin cheesecake - it is phenomenal. read more
