If you like authentic spots in towns down dirt roads this is a real find. A cozy 1940's era diner, Cooky's specialty is pie. I swooned over their butterscotch meringue and it didn't disappoint . Golden City is about 15 miles southwest down dirt roads from Lamar the birthplace of president Truman and former residence of Wyatt Earp. This would make a great side trip from there. Frankly this would be the only reason a tourist would end up way out there, pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Golden City also is a great spot for photographers who like to shoot abandoned buildings. Some beautiful examples out where time forgot. Cash only

Classic American Food: Gooseberry Pie & Brisket w/ Brown Gravy & Suzi's. Great Food.

Classic American Great Tasting Food. Everything on the menu is good. Order your pie first to insure they'll have what you want. You'll love it.

Pie is amazing! Take home six different pieces to make a whole pie! Brisket was delicious! Worth the 10 minutes off of I-49.

Known for their pies. A little off the beaten path. Pies were ok but the pie area was unkept and messy.

Every once in a while, you stop at a restaurant that takes you back in time. That Place is such a…read moreplace. It looks like a soda fountain straight out of a 1940s movie, quaint, and having that old time appeal. We stopped in on a Saturday night when they were in their busiest time of day, but we were seated promptly and they took our order within 10 minutes. The truly amazing part was that there were three high school girls there and no adult supervision and they were doing great . The young lady that waited on us called us y'all and sir. Not only was I impressed, I was also shocked. We kept it simple, so both me and my buddy had a cheeseburger, the best onion rings I've had in a long time, and a chocolate shake. All were delicious and the next time I'm in that area, I'm gonna come in and try something else. I would've left pictures of the food, but all I wanted to do was start eating the minute she set it down. If you're anywhere near this place, stop in and enjoy not only the ambience, but also the friendly service and the great food .

They can get busy at times but let them know if you need something and they will be right on it. They have a good selection of hand-dipped ice cream. There is a daily menu special too. The owner honors veterans and supports the local American Legion members. They have a good Philly cheese steak sandwich and a nice variety on the menu. They usually have some oldies music playing, toys for the kids, and nostalgic decor. Prices are fair. Worth a stop anytime except Sunday, they are closed. ;)

When we asked her about why we didn't get the discount she replied "My bad" and answered her cell phone that was ringing!! I grew up in Bolivar, and Smith's Restaurant was always one of my favorite places. My grandma used…read moreto take me here all the time, and I loved their food -- it was one of those hometown staples that felt comforting and special. Because of that history, I came in with high hopes, but I left incredibly disappointed. The service was awful. Our server, Christy, was friendly to me but noticeably rude to my husband, which felt unprofessional and uncomfortable. It was such a strange, almost hostile energy at the table, and it immediately soured the experience. Then the food came, and it was nothing like it used to be. What used to taste like good, home-style cooking now felt bland, poorly prepared, and honestly not worth eating. I could tell right away it wasn't the same standard Smith's used to be known for. What really stood out, though, was the atmosphere. Even though there were quite a few people inside, the restaurant was silent. At first, I thought it was odd, but after tasting the food and experiencing the service, it made sense. People weren't enjoying themselves. The silence said everything. It breaks my heart to write this, because Smith's used to mean so much to me growing up. But this visit left me disappointed, uncomfortable, and sad that a place once so loved has lost the warmth and quality it used to have.
