When we first arrived we were just stared at by the employees. Not greeted or anything. Eventually a younger boy that had previously just stared at us, had said, "What's wrong? Go sit anywhere." I replied with "I apologize it's our first time here." He did not reply. A few minutes later a waitress came to the table & took our drink orders. Looking at the menu, there is only chicken, salad, beef & brisket. VERY minimal side options as well. Looking into the kitchen it was very dirty & disgusting. If you like authentic spots in towns down dirt roads this is a real find. A cozy 1940's era diner, Cooky's specialty is pie. I swooned over their butterscotch meringue and it didn't disappoint . Golden City is about 15 miles southwest down dirt roads from Lamar the birthplace of president Truman and former residence of Wyatt Earp. This would make a great side trip from there. Frankly this would be the only reason a tourist would end up way out there, pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Food quality and service has gone severely downhill since they changed ownership. My grandfather tried to get some pie and the waitress told him to come back in 45 minutes for it. He went and killed an hour then upon arriving to get the pie, the same waitress barked at him saying "I said to wait 45 minutes." I highly recommend eating anywhere else. Casey's gas station down the road is even a better option. read more

I heard a lot about Cooky's so I traveled over an hour to eat at this place. I ordered the fried chicken dinner and cherry pie. The fried chicken was above average, the fries were fine but the green beans were canned. If I were to grade my pie it would have received a "B". The crust was flaky. My wife's pie deserved an "A-" (she had the chocolate pecan pie) but her brisket dinner was lacking salt and left more to be desired. If Cooky's were in my neighborhood, I would go back, but I would not drive out of my way to eat at this place again. read more

First time eating there today for lunch boyfriend and I both enjoyed the food the server was great and also very cute.

Breakfast was horrible. Had biscuit and gravy and bacon. Bacon was ok the gravy was like water and no flavor the biscuit was soggy from the so called gravy and tasted like flour. It use to be a great place to eat, not anymore. Very disappointed read more

Excellent homemade food and pies. My wife and I have eaten here half a dozen times, even though it is out of the way, and we love it. It is always busy with a mix of locals and foodies. Our lunch was swimming in grease. I had a grilled cheese sandwich and my husband had a tenderloin. My sandwich was soggy with grease and tasted like old grease. The French fries were so grease soaked they were limp. My husbands tenderloin was greasy and his baked potato was ok. I had Cherry pie ala Mode and my husband had the strawberry cream pie. He liked my strawberry cream better said his had no flavor. Mine was ok with the top crust and the filling. The bottom was not cooked well enough. I give the place 2 stars for really nice people and it was kinda clean, I felt I needed to go get an angiogram afterwards. I can't honestly recommend this place to my friends...but maybe to people I don't like...they wouldn't live long. read more

Best brisket sandwich ever! Tender and tasty. Blackberry pie was good, too. They offer a unique way to take pie home. Pick a different flavor for each piece to make a whole pie or take a whole pie of the same flavor. A great place to eat on the way down and back from Springfield. I really enjoyed this little diner just minutes off of I-49! The meal was great! Incredibly reasonably priced, and the choice of pies was incredible! All of the pies are homemade and very fresh! The brisket was delicious. We will definitely make this an annual visit on the way home from dropping off our daughter at camp! This is the best mom and pop ive ever been in i love the pie and i have never had a plate of food that wasnt absolutely awesome

The pies, the pies, the pies!!!! Ok, so side of ham I started with was phenomenal...loved it. Then I had a t-bone steak, cooked to a perfect medium rare. All the while I could not stop looking at the pies though and we ordered 3 amongst two of us. Rhubarb was AWESOME, Gooseberry was AMAZINGLY AWESOME, and the Pecan was F'n AMAZINGLY AWESOME. If you are in Golden City ever (and you probably won't be) do not miss Cooky's! And then go to Golden City Meats after, then visit Cheryl at Dogwood Farms.
