Cook Out is always solid food; I'll never call it amazing but it is good food and tends to be consistent. This was, possibly, my last visit as I am moving to Pittsburgh, PA, so I decided to try their spicy chicken sandwich and thy added Cajun seasoning to it to take the spice level. It was good. We ordered our trays per usual. The double burgers were cold, dry, and overcooked. French fries had been sitting and were cold and hard. The salt packets had moisture and were clumpy. My husband ordered a malt and the malt was old and stale, woudn't even blend in the mixer it was so hard. It appeared unclean, the soap dispenser in the bathroom was broken and the other one was empty. On Sept 25th, My girlfriend got me a cook-out tray, and in it were at least 15 hairs, a wad of them. It had to be done on purpose. They most the company said was they're supposed to give us a check for what we paid and wanted to give us coupons, like we will EVER eat at another Cookout EVER! They said they'll look into it. Before we get into the review, let me tell you about the set up. I've heard nothing but good things about Cookout from my friend, specifically regarding the one in Johnson City Tennessee. I was also told their food is extremely cheap without skipping on the quality. So naturally when I found this store, I had to check it out for myself. On this day, I was cosplaying Vegeta from the Dragon Ball Z series. From the second I walked in, I got the same vibe from this place as well as the workers that I would get when going to an Anime/Gaming Convention. The vibe of everyone being in on the joke. While most locations get me going while in character, the workers not only went with the cosplay, but heavily indulged it. As I'm looking at the menu, I hear a worker in the back scream KAKKAROOOOT!!! Upon hearing this, I knew it was safe to scream like Vegeta does in the show. This is the ONLY place I have ever felt safe releasing one of my screaming bellows without the fear of getting in trouble. During my visit, I got to partake in a nice back and forth conversation with the workers in character as Vegeta. To summarize what I got, I got a Regular Cheeseburger with only Ketchup (Could have gotten a double for the same price but learned that too late), a large fry, and a large drink. It cost me roughly $8. Let me just say, if you need food, but don't have a lot of money, you need to come to Cookout. While other fast food places have overpriced menus, you get a lot of food for not a lot of money. The drink and condiments are of course serve yourself. Unlike some restaurants, this place is EXTREMELY spacious. Like, we're talking so spacious, you would expect parties were held here, or celebrities giving people space to gather round. The burger was flavorful. Not over cooked and charred on the side like some burgers.. SPECIFICALLY BURGER KING. The Fries were just the perfect amount of salt. Most of the time, Fast Food places have fries saltier than me when I play Super Smash Bros with my friend. And by this point, I really don't feel like I need to mention just how awesome the staff is. They act like the cool friends you would invite over for gaming night. The restaurant itself was very clean and had a very homely feel. I can't state enough how awesome this place is. This menu is cheap enough that I can say without a shadow of the doubt that this is where you go to eat when you're lacking money. To further illustrate how chill the people are here, let me tell you a little story they told me. There once was a woman living in their ceiling. One day the ceiling broke and she fell down from it. The people here were so hospitable, the only thing they were concerned about was if this woman was okay and not why she was living in their ceiling. The particular store we went to was in northeast Tennessee. It had not been opened long so I was surprised at the food quality. The coleslaw was shredded cabbage with nothing else. It was as if someone forgot to put anything in the cabbage. It was just dried cabbage. The rest of the food we got was nothing to write home about. The service was friendly and that's the only reason this place got 3 stars. Sadly, I deleted the photos I had taken at the time. I may try it again just to see if perhaps that particular day an employee got mad and took some shortcuts but as of now, it's not a top thing on my to-do list. read more

We ordered two char grill chicken sandwiches, one without mayo. The other with bacon. Both had mayo. The one with bacon was over cooked. It tasted like a lump of charcoal. We had return to the counter to ask for napkins and catchup since none were included in the bag or were available in the dining room. If you plan to eat in your vehicle, better have a supply of napkins or paper towels. We observed an employee cleaning tables with a dry paper towel. No solution of Clorox or disinfectant? Didn't they learn anything during the pandemic? A locked door near the exit was filthy dirty with hand/finger prints. If I had seen that when entering, I would have left immediately before ordering. First ever visit to Cook Out. Place was empty but yet every table in their dining room was dirty. Bathroom was dirty. Trash cans all full. Floor dirty. Lots of employees just kind of wandering about or going outside to vape. We ordered the bbq bacon burger tray and the grilled chicken sandwich club style tray. Bacon on the burger was raw and inedible. Hush puppy side were very dark and hard as rocks, indicative of needing a fryer oil change. Onion ring side consisted of 4 silver dollar sized onion rings and the coleslaw side was the size of a shot glass. Chicken sandwich was obviously cooked on the same grill as the hamburgers and tasted like one. Burger must have been cooked by Wayne Gretzky because it was a hockey puck. Hours later and I'm still burping up the taste of that mooing chicken sandwich. read more

If I had a dollar for every time I have received an incorrect order after purposely talking clear and slow enough, I could probably combat how expensive it is to eat there. Someone should get a research team out to Kingsport Cook Out to see how the human body functions without brain cells or teeth. Have you ever gotten a burger with no burger on it? I sure have. Tonight, I ordered a slice of cheesecake with strawberry and chocolate chips...she asked me if I said chocolate syrup to which I said no - chocolate chips. I have had my orders messed up every time I go there which isn't often but over 4 years or so it's about 20 times. I would definitely go more often if this wasn't the case. I love Cookout! They stay open late so if you're like me and work later in the evenings, you know Cookout is there for you. There are many shake flavors to choose from and the shakes are always so good! The prices are great too! You get a lot for a little money. A vegetarian tip is to get the quesadilla tray and ask for cheese quesadillas! They also use a sauce that's spicy and nice for vegetarians who also love flavor! I'm not a huge French fry person but I love theirs because of the seasoning. Also, the sweet tea is so good!!! read more

just now If I could give the kingsport cookout location 0 stars I would. I went there today. My family and I went through the drive through and ordered cookout trays with chicken quesadillas with extra sauce. We pay, receive our order, we go park and eat only to discover there is absolutely no sauce on our quesadillas. No problem easy fix we will just ask for a cup of sauce.I send my husband in to get a cup a sauce so we can fix the issue. He goes in and the cashier gets an attitude and says he gas to have the receipt. Ok he comes back out to the car gets the receipt and goes back in. At this time the manager Chris is there who tells my husband hes lying about there not being any sauce because he made them his self. My husband is irritated at this point and walks out he cussed when he walked out the door in irritation which was not said to any employee mind you. My husband walks back out to the car gets the trays and goes back in takes it to the counter and says to the manager Chris show me where there is any sauce on these. At this point the manager Chris says hes not replacing anything because my husband cussed in front of his child? Manager Chris hands my husband a cup and said to call corporate. My husband lost it on this guy at this point and came back to the car. Realized he forgot the receipt so I went In and asked for it back or at least a copy of where I paid and the manager Chris once again denied our request and told me I can call corporate they will take care of us. I then asked him is a cup of sauce just to much to ask for? In which he ignored me and said he wasn't going to be disrespected. I mean come on dude it's a freaking cup of sauce it's not like I asked them to remake it or for a refund. I called the corporate office and filed a formal complaint although I doubt I will hear back. This dude is on a total power trip and its extremely bad customer service to not only fail to fix your mistakes but also accuse your customers of lying. Can't beat the price. Simple combo for under $7. That being said - you get what you pay for. I enjoyed my meals there but..... One big advantage here over some of the other places in Kingsport - you can eat inside!!! Not to be avoided. But I don't know I would drive out of my way to get here. read more

They have really nice customer service and good milkshake but the size of them are just stupid. $3.99 for a small. I use to get large there for that prize. I can find some other milkshake as good as them cheaper so where else. Plus how much onions do they need to put on a hamburger. Last November, almost a year ago, I ate a burger and fries at the Kingsport location of Cook Out, and after finishing the meal, I felt some mild rumblings in my stomach. In the 18 hours following the meal, I got quite sick from it and visited the bathroom six times. It is clear that I just didn't eat something that disagreed with me, but probably ate something at that restaurant that was contaminated or had some bad bacteria on it. When I thought about it, the likely culprit is the person who make my burger had probably visited that bathroom, and didn't take the time to make sure they had washed their hands very well before preparing my food. I thought I would call customer service for the restaurant chain to address that issue. They didn't have a customer service number to call, but only a form to fill out and offer "feedback" at their web site. I used that and informed them of my experience eating at one of their locations. The issue I"m addressing here is the larger question of, how many customers are getting sick eating at these restaurants because the ultra-low-flow faucets prevent them, or the workers at these places, from adequately washing their hands. I don't mean to be too graphic, but are we getting sick when the people cooking are food in the bathroom one minute and right after not washing their hands adequately enough, are making our burgers the next minute? While they might be saving having such ultra-low-flow faucets in their bathrooms, it's not worth it if it prevents customers and employees from washing their hands well enough. Maybe they think they're helping to make progress on some environmental issues. I can see their CEO at some conference bragging about how many gallons of water they saved at their 150 locations by having installed these ultra-low-flow faucets in their bathrooms. But they aren't calculating how many customers got sick eating at those restaurants because customers and employees aren't washing their hands well enough with those ultra-low-flow faucets in the sinks of those bathrooms. Whatever the reason for them, be it saving water or saving money, it is clear a corporate decision like installing those kinds of facilities in their bathrooms is one that poorly serves the customers and defies common sense. Every restaurant chain that equips their bathrooms with those ultra-low-flow faucets needs to immediately replace with faucets that give a far more generous stream of water for hand washing. This may be among the reasons that eating fast food is becoming fast associated with getting stick afterward. read more

I have called 10 times and received no answer. I don't think that this bad customer service should be tolerated. Stopped in here with my dad after a doctors visit. We were hungry to say the least but this place was just awful. I ordered the Cajun chicken sandwich or whatever the correct name for it is. I think dad just had a basic burger but after we waited forever to get our food it took all we had to choke it down. Mine was just the worst piece of chicken I think I have ever ate in my life. I still have flashbacks about how awful that chicken was. Dad kept apologizing because he picked he place to eat that day. He had no way of knowing though. I don't know if it was just this one location or if they are all like that but I can tell you that was the first and last time I will ever eat at a cookout restaurant. I normally will give any place a second chance and at least try it at a different location but I was recently snowed in with a cookout restaurant being the only thing next to my hotel that was open and before I would eat cookout again I braved the icy roads to find something else.
