Wonderful and insightful experience! As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, I spend a lot of time…read moreteaching people how to shop for and prepare healthy foods. Yes, a lot of what I do entails teaching people foods to eat for optimal health, but the actual preparation of the food is a big part of that too. I came to the Zwilling Cooking Studio on behalf of my job, to enhance my cutting skills by taking their "Basic Knife Skills" class. Firstly, the Zwilling Cooking studio is modern and beautiful! There is also plenty of parking. I did not know what I was getting into when I signed up for the course. I didn't even know who Zwilling was before this, so it was a great experience. Upon entering, I was immediately greeted by the instructor (unfortunately, I forget his name) and assigned to a "station". It was a small class, probably 12-13 people. We worked in groups of 3 on kitchen islands that were set up with a cutting board, a variety of knives, and some food to practice with. The kitchen itself is bright, modern, and spacious. In addition, the placement of the stations allowed for easy viewing of the instructor. Spacing between the kitchen islands and group members felt a little tight at times, but nothing extremely uncomfortable. During the course, we discussed the companies history, the different types of knives on the market, appropriate uses for different types of knives, and how to maintain your knives. We also received some hands-on experience with knife techniques. Among my most favorite, I learned how to properly hold a knife, how to skin a tomato as well as an orange, and how to prepare parsley. At the end, we prepped a small bag of veggies that we were able to take home and use. In terms of service, the instructor was amazing! Very patient and communicative. Throughout the class, he walked around and observed our techniques, then provided feedback accordingly. He also provided a lot of professional insight from his time as a chef, that really put things into perspective. After the class, we had a chance to shop in their store and were offered a discount on regular priced merchandise. They have a great selection of items including an impressive clearance section. I ended up purchasing a steak knife and paring knife at a steal. The only thing I would change about this experience is the communication regarding registration. You can easily sign up using their online portal however, once you sign up, you don't hear anything back. It would be nice to know who the instructor is and perhaps some information on what to wear or rules in the kitchen, in advance. A reminder or confirmation a few days prior would be courteous as well. Perhaps they do this and I did not see anything (?). Not a big deal but a helpful suggestion indeed. Overall, it was a good experience. I highly recommend it for anyone seeking to build their culinary skills, whether professionally or personally. Zwilling offers actual cooking classes, which I think would be more ideal for couples, friends, or families wanting an authentic culinary experience. I will return for one of those, but in the interim I highly recommend visiting.

Avoid the Sur La Table Rustic Bread Cooking Class--Too Expensive with Very Little to Do…read more We attended the Rustic Bread course for my cousin's birthday at the White Plains store. At $90 per person, the course was ridiculously overpriced particularly since 4 of us shared the duties for making two loaves of bread. We had so little to do that one of us added salt, the other added oil, and the four of us alternated kneading one loaf at a time. I have attended other cooking classes in the past and typically, everyone gets to participate and be engaged during the class with tasks like cutting, cooking, and prepping the dishes. We have also always been given the opportunity to eat the meal we made in the process so the course is interactive, serves as a meal, and teaches new cooking/baking techniques. Unfortunately, we paid $360 for the four of us to stand around, share two small loaves of bread and some butter among the group. We did contact customer service about our concerns and while seeming attentive at first, they ultimately did nothing to address our concerns. I would advise that you look for a cooking class elsewhere that will most likely be far more affordable and hands-on with the option to enjoy the items you bake/cook in a fairer proportion where everyone is allowed, at the minimum, to make their own loaf.

Estelle did not have anything prepared ahead of time and was 15 minutes late. The assistant who was there to greet us seemed unhappy and annoyed that we were there and did not let us know Estelle was running late. When Estelle started the class there was no greeting or introduction and no instruction as to what the girls would be doing. She split the girls into two tables but the assistants were not able to give instructions so each table had to wait while Estelle worked with the other table. One of the assistants just kept rolling her eyes at the girls and repeating "I'm not the chef" and pointing to Estelle and saying to listen but there was no way for them to listen to the instruction because she was demonstrating with her back to them at the other table. So most of the time the girls were just sitting around waiting for instructions. When my co-leader tried to step in and help give instruction Estelle was extremely rude to her, and in front of the kids! The kids barely got to do any cooking. They basically just measured some ingredients into bowls and poured them into cupcake tins. These girls were between 9-14 years old and they have all been doing that since they were 3 and 4 years old. We thought they would be learning more than prepping ingredients and stirring ingredients around. When we asked if the girls would be doing any of the actual cooking Estelle told us she couldn't have them working with the hot oven. I asked my girls when we got home what they thought and they said it was boring and they didn't get to do any cooking, that Estelle did everything for them. The pictures of the shop online look nothing like what it actually looks like in person, which was very run down with stuff piled everywhere, no pastries in the cases, some dead plants in the window and very dirty. The fact that Estelle charged us $900, which is money the girls made themselves selling cookies, felt like a huge scam. I'm so bummed we wasted their hard earned money and our time at Estelle Gourmet.

We can't say enough about the loving and caring teachers that my children were lucky to be nurtured by. Everyone at Prospect treats us like family. My children have long since graduated, but I keep coming there for the Moms Dance classes every week! The program at the school is full of hands-on education and learning made fun. Going outside in any weather is a must - great way to make our kids resilient and unafraid. The kids have Heritage projects to make, family days, Pancake week, everything you'd like for your kids to learn about your culture. We love Prospect Academy with all our hearts!

If you have any really knowledge about food, can cook a few nights a week, and don't like waisting money, avoid. For us, we found it wasn't worth it and really didn't like Ilia as a person. Nickled and dimed you on everything and was somehow never in the wrong. Advertised a 3 dinner a week service as $250, but it was really just $250 for her time, THEN you add in the cost of all the ingredients (and she always bought the most expensive version of everything) +$15 delivery fee (even though she is always right by our house to shop at Mom's), +$8 kitchen use fee, +$30 every other week somehow for new bottle of olive oil, etc. Wound up being $400-$450 each week for what amounted to a few lunches and dinners for the family (3 of us, and our son is 7 and barely ate her food). Couldn't wait to try to charge for an ice pack she thought we lost. If she is ever late or misses a day for whatever reason (parade, weather, you name it), there is never any money back. Also can't fully cook all the diets she claims she can do. Made a lot of mistakes when I needed low fodmap, but somehow we always ate the cost. At the end, won't even bring us back the 4 containers we paid $80 for and said "we can pick it up." Really not the type of person you want to be doing business with.
