We recently had a company meeting in the Oakland area and chose Cook and Run to lead a team building event for us, learning to cook tapas. We are a group of alphas who tend to take charge, but Chef Marisa was so engaging and funny, that we settled in and listened to her instructions, laughed and enjoyed an amazing meal. Not only did this help us to bond as a team, but it also helped us learn life lessons in addition to simple, yet tasty recipes. This was a pleasant experience from start (choosing the menu) to finish (eating our tapas). I highly recommend Cook and Run!

Amazing caterers and such beautiful appetizers they did for my husband's birthday. They were so professional and great crew to bring to your party. Will hire again many times for sure. Thank you so much.

    Elegance of event.

Unfortunately I can no longer recommend this business after using them twice (last year & this year). I've given this a lot of thought (it's been 12 days since my event), so it's with a heavy heart that I downloaded Yelp so I can speak up. Chef Marisa lost her sales person Dan Bridges and now I wonder if he was a huge part of what helped her business run smoothly. So much so that I asked her several times if her business model changed & she said no. We hosted our annual Holiday Bash for 35 people ($65 per person) & the theme was roaring 20's. They arrived later than expected and when I called to ask where they were, they apologized. Four people showed up in hoodies with chafing dishes which confused me. Who was the fourth person & why were they in my home??? I also asked who the chef & bartender were & I was told they hadn't arrived. I offered to turn oven on & they said it wasn't necessary. I ran upstairs to get ready then heard the doorbell & ran back down to see a man dropping off food on oven trays wrapped in celaphane. Again I wondered what was happening. Why was the food already prepared & plated? Where was the chef? I later learned she lost a chef the night before, but she didn't alert me, nor did she extend a discount for the very different experience we received. I also found out her kitchen is San Leandro so I'm pretty sure the food was prepared and sat around for hours before it got to us. Definitely not the experience I paid for, wanted or expected. The flatbread (sweet & tough) shrimp & grits (both cold & stiff), chicken & waffles (frozen tenders & eggo waffles), chicken satay (cold, marked with fake looking grill marks - store bought?) meatballs (okay, but too salty), stuffed peppers (bland & flavorless - quinoa fell out) and the stuffed mushrooms (tiny mushrooms, not even sure how they put meat stuffing on). I was shocked & upset so I texted Marisa at 3:00 am to say I wouldn't use Cook & Run again. Marisa pushed back HARD & said her servers told her I was happy when they left. She also kept asking why if I was so displeased with the food didn't I say anything and why did the servers say there wasn't a lot of food left over??? Well, everyone was starved when they arrived and the two dishes my husband who's vegetarian could eat (flatbread & stuffed peppers) weren't good, but he was again very hungry so he ate it. The servers were good & the bartender Mo exceptional! He made the experience WAY better, but the apps were not. I kept staring at the chicken and waffles wondering what it was, because it was heavily breaded tenders that looked & tasted frozen. Last year the chef kept grits warm on stove, sautéed shrimp here and made small waffles, all assembled in my kitchen which server passed when ready. When I relayed that to Marisa she said that would've been a disaster. I've done it before & why I paid Cook & Run $3,500 including 20%. It's as if she wasn't aware of her own biz model & services. Marisa and the bad experience with the food she cooked ruined the vibe of my annual party, and when I shared that she yelled & disputed my account of things. She refused to accept that no sane host with guests arriving at the same time as servers would choose to fight with them (they have nothing to do with her food). For the experience delivered I could've made my own apps. Instead I paid for a private chef to cook at my home, plate and serve warm food, but that's not what I got. Marisa finally admitted that she lost a chef the day before, but still insisted the food was good. So good in fact that she and her staff took food home after and enjoyed it. She never once alerted me to this fact & her apologies were followed by buts and A LOT of defensiveness. She also admitted that she's been very stressed out, but that was after an epic shouting match and her blaming me for using proper etiquette to get thru a horrible situation. Just an all around bad experience.

This is Lunch! This is what is supposed to be a chicken sandwich with fruit. It's so disgusting and sad that the kids in Oakland get this.

Even though locations may change per tour, our group tasted a mix of cultures and got some stories behind the dishes, the restaurants, and their owners. Few examples - * Russian cuisine - Herring with a pickled onion on fresh bread * Indian street food - I was surprised how much I enjoyed this vegan street snack - I would have never ordered anything without meat, and I dislike spinach, but the fried spinach snack was mind-blowingly good. * Mexican - Quesadilla with plantain. Again, no meat but it was soooooo good. * Chinese - Glazed Pork and pork-filled bun I won't spoil the surprise for some of the other locations. And more, and more - Total of about 7-8 places. You won't stay hungry, guaranteed. The walk itself is not challenging; there are no hills to overcome, even though it's San Francisco. Don't wait - Just go!

We decided to go with a cupcake arrangement, and they were a big hit at our wedding! We chose Alicia because we wanted vegan food, and because we needed more guidance as to flavor ideas than we had gotten from other providers we'd contacted. Additionally, Alicia was able to handle drop-off and arranging a display, whereas other dessert options would require pickup. I was really happy to learn that Alicia sources cocoa according to Food Empowerment Project's recommendations to avoid slavery in the chocolate trade. I'm grateful that Alicia was aware of this issue, and that it is important to her as well. I anticipated that this constraint would require some negotiation and explanation, but it was completely painless. (For comparison, other businesses we contacted did not respond to our questions about whether this would be possible.) Working with Alicia was a pleasure, and her cupcakes were a huge hit at our wedding. The wedding was an expression of who we are as a couple, and the values we share. Alicia's cupcakes fit perfectly with our ideals -- delicious food that reflects a commitment to treating humans and animals alike with respect. Granted, that's a lot to read into cupcakes, but we really enjoyed them, as well as working with Alicia! Highly recommended!

She ended up baking several cakes for us in two delicious flavors: a triple citrus buttercream cake filled with orange, lemon, and lime curd, and a Brooklyn Blackout cake accented with raspberry coulis and fresh raspberries. Her execution was absolutely beautiful, and even more delectable. Her aquafaba buttercream is rich, fluffy, and not too sweet...the perfect melt-in-your-mouth combination (and I'm not even usually a fan of buttercream). Thanks, Alicia! She offered a very reasonably priced tasting, and payment for the final product was easy (50% upfront, 50% upon delivery). On the morning of the wedding, Alicia came on site to set up the desserts--we provided assorted cake stands, flowers, and succulents that she arranged charmingly. She is very warm, friendly, and a pleasure to interact with. The only minor drawback during our experience was that we ended up with lots of leftover cake (3+ of the 8 small cakes we had ordered). I had a hunch that we should order 6 cakes instead of 8 based on our guest count, and expressed this to her, but ultimately went with her higher estimate since we trusted her expertise. Don't get me wrong--it's a yummy problem to have (and better than not having enough), but still a somewhat costly one for our modest budget. I would still highly recommend working with Alicia, especially if you have a good idea of what flavors you like. You can try out some of her many creations at Very Vegan Sundays at SoMa StrEat Food Park, the Butcher's Son in Berkeley, and other various pop-ups around the Bay area (and drool over them on her Instagram feed).

I drive by here all the time, and I know this place is small and not really dine-in friendly, so I ordered online to go. Honey ordered the rib plate with yams and baked beans. I ordered the rib and link plate with mac and cheese and potato salad. The online order (DoorDash) status said it would be 25 to 35 minutes before we could pick up our food. Coming from Hayward, that was perfect timing. When I arrived, there was a small line. "Unc" was in the back making plates, and the young lady up front seemed a little overwhelmed, but she was doing her best. Unc came from the back with our plates and asked for the online purchase verification. I thanked him, he told me to have a good day, and I went on my way. The food was good, pricey but good. We spent 66 dollars on the two plates ordering DoorDash. Honey is from Texas, so she's not a big fan of pre-sauced meat; she says it hides the true quality of the meat. The online order form doesn't let you put the sauce on the side. However, the ribs were tender, peeled off the bone easily, and were seasoned just right. The link was great; I don't think you'll find that kind of link in a grocery store. The mac and cheese has a hint of garlic in it, which was surprising in a good way. The yams had the right amount of sweetness to them, not too sugary or overpowered by cinnamon and nutmeg. The beans were good too, just standard baked beans without extras. The potato salad was different; the cut of the potatoes was unique and not too soft. It was good, just not what I'm used to, so I don't think I would order that again. Overall, Roderick's is good BBQ. I would come back, I also want to try their fried cat fish.
