I purchased a car from Contra costa Auto sales (salesman Jerry) 2 1/2 years ago and I was very happy with the experience. let me add I've been recommending them to everyone .. I know several people who purchased cars from them based on my recommendation. . So 2 years later I traded in my first vehicle with Jerry once again because it had failed smog and I didn't want to pay for a cat converter. SO I left with a suv with no chk engine light.. A couple of days later the chk engine light came on and I brought it back and they repaired it free of charge and even gave me a loaner.. I was once again satisfied with the experience. I read the yelp comments and I wonder if some people have been unreasonable in their expectations of what you get when you buy a used car cheap. I read a comment from a lady who bought a van for 3500 and drove it to s. Dakota and complained she was ripped off.. really?.. We purchased a vehicle last year from Contra Costa Auto Sales and have had nothing but problems since. At first we thought we were happy with our purchase. The vehicle looked nice, for 20k we didn't expect to have to put a bunch more money into it! The first week a tire blew out. The tires on the vehicle had no life left in them when we bought it. We figured, no big deal and bought new tires. Another week or two goes by and we notice the radiator is cracked. At this point I contacted the dealer and they offered to replace the radiator. Little did I know their mechanic is terrible and broke the front bumper clips and used long screws behind the head lights to secure the front bumper back on. (We found this out after taking the vehicle in for body work after being rear ended). During the first month we also noticed the front sensor for FCW was broken and it looked as though the front end had damage consistent with being in an accident which was not disclosed to us! This was over 3k to fix.. The next month we took the vehicle in for an oil change and were told that the oil pan bolt was completely stripped and could not be removed. They told us that they serviced the vehicle prior to selling it to us which was either a lie or they knew it was damaged and didn't tell us. About 8 months after purchasing the vehicle the engine started to fail. It is now in the shop with major mechanical problems and is going to cost us even more. It's been nothing but problems since the purchase. Spending 20k on a vehicle you would expect more! Save your time and money and go anywhere else if you are looking to purchase a vehicle. read more

Got a car about a month and a half ago. Car is already having problems. Needs lots of work. Reached out to John and advised him so we could work something out. He wanted me to bring the car for his people to work on. Not comfortable with that. But he gave no other option as to working something out. My mechanic advised the cars transmission work, something with the engine and an agilment. Now John is running a post dated check and has not tried to fix the problem in any other way. The down payment should not be charged because I have to put money in the vehicle. Now I will be reaching out to the better business bureau since problems with the car were not disclosed at the time of purchase. And a lemon law attorney. My dad and i recently purchased a 2013 Chevy Malibu from JERRY at CONTRA COSTA AUTO SALES Yes Jerry didn't have his Sugar honey icet tea in order meaning (SHIT) in a nice way, We, test drove the car 3 times, Told Jerry feels likes the Tranny is slipping Awww no you must have touched the button its one of those that you can shift as well as being automatic, My Dad Being nice said oh maybe so we drove it again, Still telling him that its slipping, He still said that its just this Manuel button so we took his word for it, Bought the car, within days the check engine light comes on says ENGINE POWER IS REDUCED! Along with the transmission slipping more, Well we call Jerry they say bring it in so we did they had it for a few days then called my dad car is ready Jerry said that they fixed it and it should help the tranny from slipping NOW come on i may a women but were not that dump what does you fixing a oil pressure sensor have to do with the TRANSMISSION NOTHING, So we drive it off, within a few more day transmission still slipping and here comes on that Light again,, Call again so they take it to Winters Chevy where they proceed to tell them only the check engine light nothing about the transmission, the story goes on,a few more times brought back to JOHN told us that they had to replace the oil pressure sensor cause it was a bad one or it was sticking. My son-in-law and Daughter came with me to pick it up again said they fixed the light problem and that it should help the slipping AGAIN we drove off the lot and my son-in law was pissed the transmission slipped again they didn't fix shit we drove back to the dealer JOHN told him to take a ride so he can feel it slipping he didn't want to cause he had customers Jerry asked what was wrong my son-in-law said you guys didn't fix A F*&$^%^ thing on this car and didn't even put gas in it left it on empty WOW had to get a used Transmission . Went to work went home then came to see me not even 17 hours after purchase and it was dinging at her and redlining. She pulled over turned it off and called and spoke with John who said bring it back and we will fix it and they gave her a car to drive it smelled bad and was very dirty inside. But we can deal with that. The next day he called and told her he had taken the car to Wayne's for repair, Wayne's is a smog shop they don't fix cars at all! Then he said he had ordered the parts and it would be in at 3:30. Well we went to Wayne's to ask and he was acting very weird said he could say anything to us except he smogged her car and it passed. Went to contra costa auto sales to see what was going on and as we are looking in engine compartment john comes out and makes a rude comment about "oh look we have 3 mechanics to look at this car"! Really just because we are women it doesn't make us ignorant!! We ignore him then jerry comes and says see this upper coolant hose broke but nothing else is wrong and we will have it fixed by this afternoon. As we are looking at interior and trunk the mechanic pulls up behind car and goes to talk to jerry we stopped talking so we could hear what they were saying and we hear the mechanic tell Jerry " I told you it was a quick, so you can get it sold fast! I told you it wouldn't work!" At that point we went in and told John what we had heard, he went out and had them come inside so we could confront them in which they both lied and said that the only thing they said was it's just the upper coolant hose that's it. What bs they are liars when we left they were telling and cussing at us mad cause they got caught! But she is still stuck with her purchase. She picked up her recently repaired car and it is no longer quit it's pretty loud noise coming from engine probably cause they drove her car overheating to smog shop and had it smogged then back to the lot. nd the fixed the problem the she looked in car and found paperwork that previous owner had taken car to shop 1 year prior for overheating problem!!!!! I took it into my mechanic and there was a few things wrong with it, besides I ran the numbers on Edmunds in the mean time as well. I went back in to deal with them, I told them I would think about the numbers and call them back. I got home and we discussed the price with fixing 3 things. Told them I would be in first thing in the morning. I wanted the brakes fixed as there were cracks and a safety hazard. I get there this morning and now they won't fix anything and still want the same amount... they must have thought I was a stupid female or something. THIS PLACE IS PISS POOR AT BEST! OWNER NEVR AROUND & SALESMAN JERRY IS THE EPITOME OF A USED CAR SALESMAN SCUM BAG! IF YOU WANT TO GET SCREWED AND ABUSED, THIS PLACE IS PERFECT!! Long story Long, originally we ended up with a payment $71 dollars higher then we said we could afford, drove off the lot, received nothing from the loan company, so a month later we called wondering how we were to make our payment, Jerry then informed me they screwed up our loan and had to start the process over again and said "dont worry, well fix it...and hey, youll be driving the car for FREE until we get the papers ironed out". So we show up the next day with my disabled mother whom was co signing, and has a very hard time leaving the house, and JERRY had no paperwork together and let us know he was going out of town to visit his girlfriend for 3 days, and would have the paperwork ready by that Friday and would personally come by our house as my mother couldn't handle yet another unsuccessful trip to the dealership. Friday came and went, no call no show. Left several messages, no response. The next friday, same thing. A month later, still have the car, but no Jerry, nor paperwork, nor a phone call....So eventually...I get a frantic call 5 MONTHS later form Jerry that he was in hot water with the boss, and I was one of 3 other "deals' that he hasn't closed out from 2012, we drove off the lot last august, and it was now in the middle of Jan. 2013. I agreed, but then he informed me the original payment we agreed to that was $271 (which we could ill afford) was now going to be $315 a month. I was astonished and very upset that they screwed up, and I was the one who had to pay for it. I asked to speak to the owner, and several more weeks went by, and left many many messages. Ultimately, the owner, John called, and I informed him that his salesperson Jerry wasnt allowing me to speak to him, and was pressuring me into signing a loan that I wasn't happy about, and he acted very suprised and had no knowlege about anything salesperson Jerry was up to. I never heard back from the owner even though i kindly asked him to inform his salesperson that I didn't want him to handle my loan and i would appreciate him not calling me anymore, but that didn't happen, I started receiving frantic messages from Jerry, talking a million miles a minute like a meth head, leaving threatening messages on my voicemail that said, "you've got until 6 oclock tonight to sign the god damn loan papers or we will be there to tow the FUCKING car TONIGHT". Long story short, I had the car almost six months, and they took my junker in as a trade in and they let the registration lapse and never put it in their name, so they were going to take the car that i desperatly needed, and leave the old junker with no registration and now penalties that i couldnt afford, so I was forced to have to accept the higher payment. I spoke to a lawyer and found out they were in their rights to take the car as I hadn't made a car payment throughout those 5 months eventhough I tried, I didn't know that if the loan fell through, I was too pay the payment direct the dealer even though they never informed me, didn't contact me for five months, and they had the complete upper hand. They are shiesty people, They also lied to me the day i got the car when i overheard a mechanic whisper to the owner that the "check engine" light was on in my car and the owner John replied "just clear it", and I spoke up and asked the owner "thats not (my) car your talking about? and his reply was "ooooh noooo...thats another corolla", which i felt a little funny as I saw no other corolla on site...sure enough the next day, im pulling out in my new car and my transmission is jumping down the street, and come to find out they sold me a car with a FACTORY RECALL on a bad transmission computer, which could potentially put me in danger while driving. Luckily, my brother was a mechanic and knew exactly what needed to be replaced, which was the entire computer which costs around $1500, but warned me that they will try and "fix" a smaller part, that essentially was just a band aid, and would only last for a month or two, but by then the car wouldve been my responsiblity to fix as it was sold AS IS, so luckily they screwed up the loan and had to fix it. They also asked me to 'fudge' to the loan company and not tell them my down payment was a trade in and that i gave them $2,500.00 cash. I spoke to an auto attorney during this whole episode and they informed me that was utterly fraudulant in the worst way. So, its now 4/23/2013, and I have to call them once again because I have yet to receive my registration and tags in the mail and now im getting tickets for expired registration. This establishment is the most piss-poor, dishonest, shit head, shiesty, low down, bottom of the barrel, dog shit on the bottom of your shoe, creme de la creme of complete ass clowns ive ever witnessed. I WISH I COULD GIVE THIS place (-) STARS!! SO UNPROFESSIONAL! My sister goes in to purchase a 2006 Altima, I go to meet up with her as well as her fiancee. The salesperson asks us to fill out credit applications, loan was worked on and my sister called the following day to find out that she was approved. I called jerry and he stated that the loan was approved with my sisters fiancee as a co-signer and that all they had to do was go down there with the money and he could sign for the car. Since my sisters fiancee had to work, they were told it was okay to go on Monday and pick up the car. Monday morning she gets ready, goes to the bank to get the money and then is told once she is there that the CAR WAS SOLD! Ummmm.....they sold the car the day they told her that they got the loan approval. How the hell is that even legal? No call? no apology? no nothing? I called Jerry since my sister called me upset and in tears and he said that they sold it a few mins before closing on Saturday night. wth? I asked why they did not put the car in the back, since it was spoken for...he said well your sister should of came saturday....um, are you kidding? They agreed to Monday, since they were closed Sunday. He said there was no contact, Yes there was!! She signed it the day, she applied for credit. THAT IS SO SHADY! Seriously, what professional dealership goes behind a customers back, sells the car that they were approved for, does not even call the customer and let them know, and then doesnt even offer a frickin apology or anything? UNBELIEVEABLE! Be very cautious with this establishment. Shadiness is never a good quality and by the looks of their rating on here, the proof is in the pudding. I bought a car for 1500.00 and 2 months later it blew up on me. You would think this man would of done something to help me out and did something to help me out here. He went and talked to me he hung up on the phone on me needless to say I got really upset that who went and have I gone to see my kids has he tried to do something for me, No. In fact if I had my boyfriend saying that if he worked there he would have to put up with me. Well did you John no he didn't I let it go but considering you fired my boyfriend that's gone too far so now you will have me giving you a hard time which will I will come back from time to time to check to see how good your business is doing and make sure that people know that you have little heart in a bit on the greedy side. So one you get cars turned in there were thousands of dollars for $500 trade ins that's nothing off of you and you know this and if you can't have that small of a heart to care then I can imagine all the other things that you do. They sold me a car with a bad transmission and Jerry told us that it had a 2 year warranty but it did not. we have been paying for it ever since they have had my car for over 2 months, and they keep blaming it on the mechanic who says that he does not have the transmission I want to know who has it , they are suppose to be helping people and I have not had no help from either party. I called before I went in and explained the situation how much I had to put down (about two hundred less then they normally take) how much I could afford a month and so on....The man named Jerry tells meNO PROBLEM if you can walk and have income then you will drive off with a car....So when we get there he says OH I HAVE THE PERFECT CAR.....We drive the car,GREAT WE LIKE IT Lets make a DEAL,all of a sudden after some talking with someone else this car wont work for us and they begin to pressure us into to two other cars. We purchased a 2000 Ford Windstar van on April 30th for $3500.00. We brought it home and tried to start it and it would not start. We called Contra Costa Auto sales and told them we hadn't had the van for 15 mins and it won't start. The owner and a mechanic came to our house and as they were pulling up the van had started. So they said we must have flooded the van and that's why it wouldn't start. A few days later the same problem, van wouldn't start. We called and spoke with Jerry the guy who sold us the van, and he kept giving me the run around stating we bought as is. Finally I got a hold of the general manager John Stone and he came out with a mechanic and temporarily rigged the van to start without us know that it was temporarily rigged. About a month later the same thing happened van wouldn't start. Finally we had it towed to a Ford dealer and they ran tests and found that the van could not communicate with the PCM. They checked all powers and grounds at PCM and no power. Found fuse blown, replaced fuse and now can communicate with PCM but still no start. Checked fuel pressure and no fuel pressure. Performed test on fuel system and PCM is not grounding fuel pump relay. Also found that someone had tried to ground fuel pump relay with ground wire to chassis and relays covers are damaged. They removed ground and retested and found PCM has internal fault causing no ground issue. We purchased this van form Jerry at Contra Costa Sales because he told us that this van was the book keepers van and she didn't need such a big car since it was just her and her dog and that they, meaning Contra Costa Auto Sales and their mechanics had taken care of the van and it runs great no problems ever. If we would have known that they had just rigged this van so it would run temporarily we would have never purchased such a van. We purchased this van for our son who has 2 small children never realizing that this was an UNSAFE vehicle. If you are thinking of buying a vehicle from these people I would think twice as they lied to us about the up keep of this vehicle and how it ran great with no problems. We have now spent an additional $2313.66 to have the van fixed. Total price we ended up paying is $5813.66. For that price we could have went to a reputable dealership and bought a newer van. Jerry said how these people were so honest and a good Mormon family, looking out for other families. If this is the way they look out for people, we don't need or want these people looking out for us. NEVER BUY FROM THESE SHADY PEOPLE. THEY ARE A RIP OFF. read more

Listen to the Yelp reviews, this place is two stars for a reason. First impression want too bad when I bought the car, he was generally a talkative man but that's all part of car sales. I was hoping my experience with them would be better than some others on here. I was dead wrong. About 3 months after buying my car from them, a car part literally fell out while driving and I had to get my car towed (it was the harmonic balancer which correlated with the timing belt). Thankfully I was going slow on a local road while this happened. Though that's not all, they promised to have my registration done within a month or two which is reasonable since dmv is known to take awhile. However it has been SIX months and they haven't even changed the name under the car to mine nonetheless given me a pink slip. Every time I've called they would give me a lame excuse on why it was not done yet. So I went to dmv myself and had to drive 40 minutes to them just to get the paper work done myself. read more

As she was driving the car home the transmission began to sound like it was falling out of the car. We returned directly to the lot where john was present and said to us No Problem bring it back monday and we'll take care of it. Since then we have had nothing but the run around. They have told us they would do what ever it took to make it right, but since then we've been to 3 of their machanics that have all said the same thing"the transmission needs to be replaced" and its a problem in which they had to have known about prior to putting it on the lot! John now says he doesnt want to pay for that so bring the car back and i"ll give you your money back!! for the record we paid for in cash.
