When I arrived, there were 6 customers ahead of me - patiently waiting. A good sign... Carol was cordial and welcoming talking of her local experience as she did her work. She did a fine job, completing the haircut in about 15 minutes! I was pleased with the result, and plan to return in the future.

Lisa, the shop owner, is competent in what she does, but even after 5 or 6 visits she still does not recognize me and does not know how my hair should be cut. Ultimately I no longer frequent this establishment because I rarely carry cash and I can't afford to sit in her waiting area while she performs cuts on other customers. Once I had to wait while three other gentlemen got their haircut before me. She needs to be able to allow for appointments, with today's technology, this should not be hard.

Price: I don't remember exactly how much my haircut was, but I think it was about $12. I remember getting a student discount. I'm not a student, but look young. I returned the money I saved in form of a tip because I felt guilty. Experience: I like to think I'm not too picky when it comes to hair cuts, but I am actually quite picky in choosing a place to get it cut at. For example, Supreme Cuts down the street seems like a really chill and hip place to get your hair cut, but the main type of cuts they do are close cuts and shaves. My hair is medium length and I like it shaved on the sides and clippered on top. Melissa's seemed to be more appropriate and more familiar, so that's why I came here. The first time I went in I was asked what number I wanted. The only thing I've ever ordered by number before are combo meals from fast food restaurants, so I was a bit confused. Luckily, Melissa explained what she meant and worked with me to get a cut I wanted. The cut I walked out with much shorter than I had ever had before, but it was darn comfortable! Quality of cut alone, I'd give it a 5. Why not a 5 then?: The atmosphere of this place is not really my cup of tea. I'm a quiet person that has an aversion to loud talking and politics. Both times I came here, Melissa gets talking with some of the regulars (who by the way, she seems to have a lot of and people seem to love her), and she really lets out what's on her mind. This can come out in the form of expletives, opinionated discussions, and general conversation. One time I think the counter on the "f word" probably went over 50. I'm not against swearing and the discussion was never distasteful, but I'd rather sit there and make quiet smalltalk. I'm not sure it's fair to take a star away for what is all-in-all a fantastic haircut, but it's enough to make me slightly uncomfortable. Overall: Great cut with a lively environment. Not the kind of environment that's right for me, but lots of her regulars seem to enjoy the place. Weird hours caused me to head to Redken in Canandaigua today and that was more my style and atmosphere. Although I will say that the haircuts from Melissa's are probably some of the best I've ever had.

DO NOT GO TO THIS BARBER SHOP! WARNING!…read more Just recently moved to Rochester, NY as I am a small business owner expanding to the area. With that said, I'm all for small business's and supporting them! This is one business that I CANNOT. Looking for a local barbershop I came across Altered Image, I called before coming in an hour in advance, was told that they had barbers available anytime no appointment was necessary. They took my brother, paid a ridiculous $30+$10 (TIP) for his shape-up, but again, I support it They, then told me at 10:30AM they could get me in the chair by 11:30AM. Already I'm thinking, an hour wait and there are FOUR barbers sitting down texting and chatting not working at all? FINE. I waited the hour plus more. 11:50AM someone ELSE comes in and gets sat in front of me. At this point i said, I've been here for almost two hours now with an appt for 11:30 and people are still walking in and sitting in front of me? They just allow you to wait in their lobby and ignore you until you don't have a choice but to get up and to somewhere else! GO TO ANY OTHER BARBERSHOP! They will get you in right away and treat you GREAT! This barbershop will have you wait HOURS, IGNORE YOU, All while they sit on their phones to make sure their wives aren't cheating on them back at their studio apartments. Pathetic. Sad story for a small business. Side note. If this barbershop is the ONLY option that you have, do not get sat in the females chair, she will butcher your hair for practice.
