I like the decor and the clean environment. We ordered the fish noodle soup. There is a separate order sheet for this where you can select your broth, noodle, toppings and drinks for $16.50. My husband ordered the lo mein with beef tendon which is so reasonably priced. We also got the honey bbq pork (char siu) for additional protein. Food is very tasty as usual. You can't go wrong with anything you order at Congee Queen. The service was quick. Servers are okay friendly, typical level of service you would expect at a Chinese restaurant. This is such a good childhood spot for Chinese food. They serve a variety of items and is a great place for family dinners. This congee queen is located close to Sherway Gardens. The exterior is a bit dated however the inside of the restaurant is really lovely, spacious, and renovated! I'm in Toronto and I've been wanting to try some congee for a few years. Congee is rice thats been cooked down into a porridge which can then be topped with meat and or vegetables. Congee Queen seemed like the perfect place to try some. My first impression was CQ is nice in the inside with many tables to accommodate large groups. We were seated by the hostess and given menus. The menus were on the thick side and offered a vast array of food options with plenty of pictures. If I weren't on a quest for congee, I probably would have tried one of the many other items. I searched through the many congee combinations and finally settled on the shredded chicken and duck with egg super bowl congee. The bowl included everything listed in the title plus mushrooms. A tea pot with hot tea and cups were placed on the table to sip on while waiting for your food. I noticed that the food potion sizes are huge and served family style. Well the huge bowl of hot congee arrived with a cracked egg in it. It tasted exactly like one would expect, a bowl of cooked down water and rice. I didn't hate it because of it's simplicity and I found it to be a nice warming comfort food just like a hot bowl of soup on a calm winter snowy night. I would have liked a little more duck meat instead of skin in my bowl. Congee would definitely be a step outside one's comfort zone if they have never had it before as well as some of the other dishes. Everything was seasoned well and cooked well. We noticed that this location specifically does not over-salt their food. Hence, why we chose to drive a bit further to this location for the dinner celebration. We did find it quite hard to flag down servers. I dont know if it's because we were in the semi-private room but one or two of us had to stand and look around for a server so we can order food. They had a lot of servers when they brought out the food which is why were quite baffled as to why flagging down a server to take our orders, and even to refill our teapots and bring some water to our table felt inconvenient. I've visited 3 other Congee Queen locations before and the taste of the food is about the same. I like coming here with groups and order a la cart to share. Dishes come out quick. Within 10 minutes of ordering, even on a busy Sunday evening. I do recommend calling ahead for reservations. We got lucky and didn't wait long for a table around 6pm. Portion wise, they are very generous. We usually have left overs. On our recent trip we tried a new dish with truffle and pork jowl. I've been to a few locations quite often and some items I like are the fried chilli turnip patties, house seafood & mixed vegetable fried taiwanese vermicelli, house super bowl congee, and green bean with minced pork / dried fish. Today felt a bit uncomfortable as all the tableware smell like bleach. I asked for new tea cups thinking it was a bad cup we got but the new cup still had the same lingering bleach smell. Came here on a Saturday night and it was close to our Airbnb. Crowded but we waited less than 5 minutes for a table. Ambiance was loud but the restaurant is well appointed with a modern touch. Service is fast and courteous. Surprisingly, not all staff were Asian. As for the food, the congee was on point with the right amount of ginger and green onions. I have been to the Heartland Town Center, Centerpoint Mall, and Thornhill Congee Queen locations and this Dundas locations seems to be the best one yet. I'm not sure why but the portion sizes, the quality of the food, the presentation, and the service at this location is better than the others that I have been to. I know it's all the same restaurant and they are all supposed to be the same, however this one is better for some reason. We arrived at about 5:30 PM on a Tuesday for dinner. It was early so the restaurant was not very full yet and we were seated right away and able to order quickly. While waiting for our order I noticed that the wait staff were assembled in a corner of the restaurant for what I assume was a pre-dinner meeting. We ordered the following: 1 X Fried Chili Turnip Patties 1 X Spice and Pepper Salt Squid 1 X Shredded Pork and Penny Hot Sauce Lo Mien 1 X BBQ Pork and Roasted Duck on Rice 1 X Shrimp and Chicken Fried Rice in Cream and Tomato Sauce (Ying Yang Fried Rice) The food came quickly and arrived hot, so hot in fact that we had to wait for the turnip patties and squid to cool before we could eat it. Another nice touch was the thermal carafe for the tea. Usually, the tea cools down towards the end of the meal, but the thermal carafe kept the tea hot until the end. Our server is ok they look busy but they are decent did not wait long for the food to come. The server was very apologetic and made an effort to rush our order. The portions are generous. The turnip cake is fantastic and it's one of the popular items here. Though the place is called Congee Queen, my limited experience with congee has been fairly negative, so we figured we'd order a couple of other dishes to share. That menu, however, is just so overwhelming. I'm not sure how you're supposed to pick food from a menu that has literally over 100 items on it! Anyway, we wound up grabbing a couple of items that had pictures, the Stir Fried Sirloin with Rice Noodle in Satay Sauce ("stir fried rice noodle roll with bean sprout, chive, green onion & sesame in satay sauce") and Fried Chili Turnip Patties ("diced turnip patties stir fried with shrimp, chicken, pickle & egg in our delicious spicy chili sauce"). As soon as the food arrived, we knew we'd ordered quite poorly, since both dishes are extremely starchy. Nevertheless, I have to admit that I really enjoyed my meal at Congee Queen. We'd read that the Fried Chili Turnip Patties are the thing to order and I can definitely see why. It's just such a flavorful and delicious dish. And the Stir Fried Sirloin with Rice Noodle in Satay Sauce is just as good, too, and both dishes were enhanced by the included chili oil on the table. Met a family who lives in GTA and they said this was their go to spot so we thought we'd check it out. We ordered the peanut congee that came with condiments, a vermicelli noodle with a sweet sauce, and deep fried oysters to compare to our other "congee" restaurant we discovered on Day 1 of Toronto. Peanut congee: 3/5. The congee was good and the hubs liked the condiments it came with (seaweed, pork sung, pickles). Nothing stood out. Vermicelli with pork and a sweet sauce: 3/5. Noodles had a good texture. The sweet sauce made it seem more "American". Portion was large tho. Deep fried oysters: 3/5. The mountain of oysters looked impressive until you realize that they aren't piping hot. Some were over fried which was a bummer. Flavor was sweet followed by some heat. This place has a nice atmosphere but the food was just mediocre. It would be a place I would bring out of town guests who don't know the finer points of Chinese food. I'd bring my real friends who I'm not trying to impress to the other "congee" place. Also turned out that we were sitting in a "cold" section which I didn't realize until the end of the meal after returning from the washroom. That would explain why all our food was cold. I've tried the other Congee Queen before but never tried this one until recently. We came to this location since it was closer to the airport. It wasn't too busy around 7:30pm on a wed night and we were seated very quickly. I love how modern and clean it looks inside the restaurant. I was impressed by how quickly the food arrived after we had ordered it and everything was steaming hot, just the way we like it. My favorite would have to be the tofu and fish dish. It was amazing and looked exactly like how it would taste in the photos. The fried rice was also so good, and that means a lot since I'm not usu one to rave about fried rice. We ordered the seafood congee and pan fried noodles to take home and those were amazing as well. The shrimp wontons were massive and very delicious but I didn't care much for the noodles. Large portion too. 3- shrimp chicken and mango dish which I didn't realized it was in the sweeter side for me. Not a lot of mango pieces compared to all the leftover onion pieces. Overall it was still satisfying. Some chicken pieces were too over-fried so it was hard to bite it off or chew. My tummy was full and happy after this meal. It sent me back to my childhood, when I was eating with my grandfather at old school HK cafes. It was delicious and the chefs were not skimping out on any ingredients!! I had a fried rice and it was pretty white, tasteless, and wasn't seasoned whatsoever. This location on Dundas/427 was fairly quiet shortly after it opened at 11am on a Saturday. On the right side of the restaurant, there are a bunch of booths, and seating was staggered. What was ordered: Congee, Rice Roll w/ Dough Fritter, & Cantonese Chow Mein. Everything was seasoned properly - and most importantly, not overly salty as it can be in many restaurants. What I do hafta give props for is the arrival of the food onto the table. I have no idea how these places do it, but the appropriate dish arrives at the table before you're even wondering, "Where is the food? I'm starving!"
