Texican transplant in RVA gives this place ALL THE STARS! A friend suggested this place and I had my reservations since I am from the border of Texas and have very high expectations for "good, authentic Mexican food," but man was I pleasantly surprised! Not only is the food truly authentic and delicious, it won't cost me an arm and a leg either. I went with my husband who is also from the border of Texas, and let's just say we couldn't stop ordering after our first bite of queso fundido; i ordered that dish first because it's simple but easy to do incorrectly. Conejo does all the dishes correctly! They even dressed my beer for me with Tajin (pro-tip: ask a Mexican restaurant if they have Tajin...if they do, it may be legit). We ate outdoors on a well-heated and very comfortable patio (it was about 35 degrees), and our server was fantastic. The food arrived quickly, the tequila options were many, and we left full and excited to take my mom there - yes, I'm excited to take a Mexican grandma there to eat. Know before you go that this restaurant is quite loud inside. We were seated inside, close to the patio doors that banged each and every time a server came in/out - not super loud but a bit disruptive since it was hard to hear each other to begin with. Started with the tortilla soup. Soup was lukewarm to start so I requested it be heated. They promptly prepared a fresh bowl and said they would not charge us for it. Nice gesture as I just wanted it warmed up. The main ingredient seemed to be chili powder. For me, the chili powder was all I could taste but just an opinion of one. Queso w/chorizo was served sizzling hot in a skillet and was really tasty. Had the braised short ribs. Unfortunately, served lukewarm but taste was delicious. Will probably give it another shot because I'd like to try a couple more things. Service was good. read more

Most legit Mexican food that we've had in Richmond. It rivals CA (where we moved from). The ceviche was creative, spicy and flavorful. Tacos (I enjoyed the tuna and broccoli) were delicious (the blue corn tortillas that they were wrapped in were mouth watering). Chips and guacamole were fresh and addictive. And to top it all off, the Tres Leches cake was one of the very best I've ever had. So good! We sat at the bar and enjoyed efficient and friendly service. This place is a gem! read more

My wife and I went here for the first time tonight...we had Alma as our server. Ate there for lunch today. The food was outstanding! We had the queso app with chorizo which was amazing. The chips are homemade and huge! Then, for the first time ever, my wife and I got the same entree: a shrimp tostada which was very good. I usually don't think much of Mexican food but this is very different. I had ceviche and the braised beef plato redundo. Unfortunately, the redundo is what brought the rating down, as the ceviche was pure perfection. The braised beef was very dry and overcooked with the tasteless crispy edges you get if you leave meat in the slow cooker for way too long. I felt like I got the end-of-day scraps and not the freshly braised beef that I was craving. The restaurant was extremely loud, too. That's becoming an increasing deterrent to "hip" places around Richmond. read more

We went to Conejo on a Friday night happy hour. Great service and well managed for such a busy place. By 5:30 the restaurant was full. We ordered the queso fundido and short rib tacos with drinks. I realize that this is truly Mexican food not Tex-mex but I didn't care for the tortillas, too thick. With that said the fillings were delicious and we will definitely go back. read more

This restaurant is as unique and a culinary adventure. My husband and I happened in a somewhat busy Sunday afternoon. We were promptly greeted, seated and the waitress immediately took our order. The food arrived promptly and we kept actually ordering more because it was absolutely so fresh and delicious. Excellent service, great food, and at a fair price point. Started with margaritas (frozen and on the rocks), and both tasted authentic and were very good. Guacamole appetizer tasted fresh, with a nice amount of heat, but lacking acid (e.g., lime). Tacos - fish, birria de pollo, and de suadero - all very fresh, well-seasoned and tasty. The two-per-order tacos are small-ish, so order a few or mix and match, but three is probably the right amount per person if you want the equivalent of an entree. Refried black beans and corn in a cup sides were both good. The chips and corn tortillas are made in-house and they are delicious. Tres leches dessert was well-soaked (a must for tres leches) and a nice way to end the meal. Highly recommended and we will definitely be back! read more

The service left a lot to be desired. I made a lunch rez for 3 on the patio one week prior. We arrived on time. I provided my name and the host gave me a pained look. They lost my reservation. Apparently some others too. I was told It was a reservation software screw up. We were offered indoor seating which is not what I reserved nor what any of us wanted. I was told the wait for a patio table would be a good 30 minutes. So, we sat at a table and talked (through our masks) waiting for an outside table. About 20 minutes in we saw an open two top table on the patio. I brought it to the host's attention and told him we'd take the two top if they could add another chair. The response was "we have a reservation for that table," and I'm thinking I had a reservation for a table 20 minutes ago that had yet to be honored. To add insult to injury, the host also explained a restaurant policy wherein an extra chair can not be added to a table. So there I was, having already waited 20 minutes only to be told my reservation was less important to accommodate than the two top whose party hadn't even arrived. I was ready to leave then but my companions wanted to stay. The host did apologize but his apology didn't include any effort to find us an outdoor table sooner. As we sat and waited for more than 30 minutes, and without an apology from the manager, I was pretty appalled that the neither the host or manager bothered to offer us a complimentary drink or appetizer. Nope, not happening. Bad form. Very bad. The host stopped by one more time to tell us the people eating on the patio we're staying far too long because it was such a nice day. How lovely for them. But we're all grown ups here and grown ups know that when you are required to make a reservation, the restaurant has allotted a specific amount of time for you and typically a generous one. Once a party has exceeded their reservation time by more than 15 or 20 minutes, they are rudely causing other patrons an extended wait and and denying the opportunity for a waiter to earn more tips. If you must continue that very important conversation, take it to the parking lot, a coffee shop or anywhere else where other people aren't inconvenienced. And restaurant staff should be trained to politely tell people when it's time for the table's next party to be seated for their reservation. I brought my companions to Coñejo to celebrate both of their birthdays, so this was particularly disappointing. As for the food, it was pretty good, not great. Taco fillings were sparse. Had a good frozen mescal drink. Guac was tasty but it was too small for three to share. We ordered a flan to share and that was very tasty...but it should have been on the house. Our waiter acted like he'd prefer to be anywhere else and he never brought us the complimentary trio of salsas that were noted on the menu. For a brand new restaurant, the management and host were anything but accommodating. Will I go back? Not sure why I would when there are a few other really good, new Mexican restaurants in town and their customer service is far superior and their wait staff didn't have an attitude. read more

So upset!!! I have been there before and loved the service. But this time.... We Finally got out for date night left 3 babies at home with a sitter, got to restaurant and realized I had no service asked for Wi-Fi password so I could enjoy my time away and they denied it, even after I told them why I needed it. I really want to love Conejos as I live nearby but it does not compare to other Mexican restaurants in town. The salsa is good but the taco shells taste dry/stale and don't have a lot of flavor which makes up a lot of a taco. I tried the bowl another time and the chicken in the bowl was seasonless. What a special night! The food was spectacular. The regular menu does not disappoint but tonight we tried several of the daily specials and they were incredible. First the queso fundido was perfectly cheesy and it was served with just enough tortillas to satisfy you until the rest of the meal arrived. The ceviche in coconut milk was absolutely delicious. So fresh and tangy! Then the tamal! Divine. Freshly made, the masa was delicious. For entrees we tried the fish dish off the specials and it did not disappoint. The other dish we tried was the chicken and it was so moist and flavorful. We added to our meals the corn and black beans which were standouts! And finally we ended with chocoflan! Delicioso! For drinks I had the conejo sangria and my daughter a margarita! Both were excellent and I might have had 2! Highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for a great atmosphere, attentive staff and a new fresh take on Mexican food. It's a must stop!!! read more

Been wanting to try this place based on reviews but was very disappointed. Got the guacamole appetizers and the "chips" we fried so hard they were gross. Tried all the sauces except the green one. Pulled a hair out of It, so it was a hard pass. We wanted to try several things so we ordered the alambre, pastor con queso and taquitos. The alambre and pastor con queso were good not great but good. The taquitos were fried hard and dry. They needed a dipping sauce or at least sour cream. Ended the night with the horchata soft serve and it was the highlight of the meal. Unfortunately I was not impressed at all and will not be returning. read more

My husband and I had a wonderful experience at Conejo for our anniversary. We had a reservation for a Wednesday evening which I would recommend as the restaurant was completely full when we were there. We stayed for over two hours and never felt rushed. The staff were friendly and enthusiastic, the food and drinks were all delicious, and our bill was surprisingly reasonable given how much we ate and drank. I was almost 38 weeks pregnant at the time we went and was especially delighted that they had a mocktail ON THE MENU that I could order without needing to try to request something from the bar (and hope that it turns out ok). Not only that, but it was great! We sampled a lot from the menu but some of the standout items were the huarache, the tostada de pescado, the baja and tuna tacos, and the flan (*chefs kiss*). I was somewhat underwhelmed by the shrimp taco and the mexican chocolate soft serve, but truly everything was enjoyed. I can't wait to come back when I can properly enjoy the frozen margs. read more

A lot has changed since I was there last. Unfortunately not for the better. Went for lunch today. Much different than when they 1st opened. I had the Broccoli Tacos with Pepino Mole. Tacos used to be handmade blue corn tortillas. Today they were small plain tortillas straight from a bag on par with something from old El Paso from the grocery store. There was 1 piece of broccoli in each with some overly spicy green sauce. Nothing like I remembered. Also no more free chips brought to table. We ordered a side of chips & Guac. Guac was very good ( a small scoop) but 'chips' were fried up whole tortillas & very greasy. Overall a very disappointing & unsatisfying lunch. I do not foresee returning. Would have given 1 star but the Guac was good so a star for it read more

Today I ate at Conejo's, for lunch. (Near west end- Located on Patterson near Libbie). I went because I saw a terrific review for them on Facebook . It was sooo very good! I will definitely make this a regular place to eat. The service was excellent. My waiter described the dishes and advised me. Based on someone's review, I knew I wanted to try the Sopes. They were amazing, especially the braised beef one(chicken one also tasty). I've never had a sope before and based on this dish, I deeply regret that. I also had the Gobernador (shrimp on flour tortilla/grilled). So flavorful. I am excited to go back. So excited that I decided to bring a few things home to eat tonight. My server explained how to reheat the pastor con Queso dishes. Fingers crossed it holds up well for dinner tonight. Pics attached are a beef Sope and a chicken sope. Also the shrimp gobernador. Disappointing food. Tacos has zero flavor and were dry. This place is way overpriced with terrible parking.

By far my wife and I new favorite restaurant. From start to finish everything was near perfect. We were seated right away on a Saturday night. Our waitress was amazing and extremely knowledgeable about the menu. The restaurant is tapas style so we got to sample a bit of everything and each and every dish exceeded expectations. Our favorite was the "tostadas de pescado" which was essentially a tuna ceviche tostada. We will be seeing that dish in our dreams very soon. Overall, this is the type of place you write home about and we recommend it to anyone who loves to eat. read more

We loved our dinner here. The inside is beautiful and the outdoor dining setup is perfect. All the tortillas were outstanding. Other highlights were the beef and pork quesadillas and the huarache. Very impressed! We had the guacamole and classic ceviche to start. Neither disappointed!! We tried several tacos - tuna, Baja and carnita. All were delicious but Baja was the favorite. Nice place. Outstanding service. Great setting. Somewhat expensive for the serving size. Refried beans were not the best, but everything else was flavorful. Cerviche was very small, but very fresh and good. It is interesting that although the servings were quite small, I was quite full after eating several small dishes. read more
