When you're really hungry for Mexican food, but don't want to spend a bunch, Conejito's definitely comes to mind. Had not been there in years,not much has changed.We all ordered the 3 Enchiladas,with beans and rice,they brought out some chips and salsa to tide us over while we were waiting for our food, nothing special,but pretty standard for most Mexican restaurants.They still are reasonably priced,and served on paper plates,which is fine,but there is one change they have made ,and not for the good.They now add in an automatic 18% service charge,and let you know that it is not a tip,and encourage you to tip on top of this, seriously? I always tip good for good service (20% plus) ,but to add this in automatically, doesn't sit well with me and is left a bad taste in my mouth! read more

Went to Conejitos for a late dinner. We were seated at the long table and our drink orders were taken right away. We were asked if we wanted chips and salsa and we said yes. Out group of 4 ordered enchiladas with rice and beans. One of our party didn't want the rice and beans but was told it wouldnl be the same price so he got them. Got our food quickly and we enjoyed it. The bilI had an automatic gratuity of 18% added to our bill which also included with the taxes. I understand a large group having an automatic gratuity added but there were just 4 of us. I would pay 20% because that is what I do but I didn't like having an automatic 18% added and tax added to that, not cool! So good! I always enjoy a quick meal at Conejito's! i love the informal atmosphere where you are seated in a community space where you might be next to people you don't know. The margs (particularly strawberry) are the best margs I've had. The food is served on paper plates, and I love that! The food is tasty and servings are plentiful for the price. Fast and Cheap! But Good? Been here several times in the past. We came this time out of necessity. It was a monday and our original restaurant was closed (our bad), so with being in rush we knew the Conejitos would be quick. And it was. But as usual, not all that good. On this particular night, they were not taking credit cards. Sign was on the door, but this seems to be a consistent issue. They sat us a small "wobbly" table in the bar area. The music was loud. The room is bit old and tired looking. Server got to us right away. We ordered a couple of regular margaritas. You don't get waters (unless you pay). They were $4 and not bad. We ordered guacamole right away. It was definately not fresh. Looked like and had the texture of baby food, over processed. Ordered a plate of "Chopped Meat" tacos and a Combo Enchilada plate. The food came out in a matter of minutes. It was okay, a step up from Taco Bell (serving alcohol). The beans and rice were good. They automatically add an 18% gratuity to the bill. We were in/out in less than 30 minutes, which was the main point of coming. read more

The food is good and reasonably priced, but look at your bill closely. They put 18% tip on the bill for you and then put a line on the receipt for an additional tip. I was a regular customer, but no more. I left a 20% tip and never notice they already took their share. I don't go to places, that feel they deserve a tip before even serving you. read more

So what you need to understand about this place is that it's crappy in the BEST WAYYY! The food is so cheesy and not high quality but it's so insanely delicious and not good for you. It's very tiny and usually not insanely packed. The margaritas are a MUST. It's got a very vintage, dark, welcoming dive bar vibe but also in Mexico if that makes sense? Service is always the best too! They're my favorite thing about this place. We had a truly disappointing experience at Conejito's. We arrived well before closing time, hoping to enjoy a relaxing evening with family - people we had recommended this place to. Unfortunately, we were met with a level of rudeness and inflexibility that left us embarrassed and frustrated. At 8:01 PM, we tried to order a pitcher of margaritas, only to be told they stop serving pitchers an hour before close. That policy makes no sense - especially when you can order double margaritas (which essentially equal a pitcher of you get a couple) and they offer to-go containers for drinks if you don't finish. It felt like an arbitrary rule used to rush people out rather than serve them. Things only got worse from there. By 8:30, staff were flipping the lights on and off, clearly signaling we weren't welcome. And by 8:45, we were flat-out told we needed to leave - (which, we were about to start packing up anyway) - even though the restaurant's posted hours say they close at 9. We weren't lingering or causing any issues - just trying to enjoy a drink and some time with family. We've been long time customers here and it never used to be this way, we always loved coming here! But if you're going to stop serving and start pushing people out well before closing, then update your hours to reflect that. Otherwise, treat your customers with basic respect. We left feeling rushed, unwelcome, and embarrassed in front of guests we had brought there in good faith. We won't be back - this isn't the restaurant we loved coming too, things have definitely changed for the worse. We'll be letting others know to steer clear. Also please note: they charge for water. I used to come here younger when I was younger, so I'm kind of glad I came back and am able to leave a review. This is an old school authentic Mexican place, complete with family style seating in of the two bar areas. Nice Mexican music playing in the backround as well. Our waitress got our drink orders and food orders fast , and the food came out quite fast as well. A majority got their 4 beef steak tacos, and boy were they good! We also ordered some margaritas as well that were very tasty! The prices went up a little, but it's understandable, since I was here last two years ago. You also now have to order the beans and cheese that always used to come free, which again I had no problem doing. I have several friends who rave about this place so we decided to go for brunch. We had the bean dip appetizer and then almost everyone ordered the huevos rancheros which is a brunch special (and the only menu item not served on a paper plate). The menu is small but with just enough options for everyone. The food was so delicious, was served quickly and was at an inexpensive price point. Good portion sizes too. The margaritas are also great but do have quite a secret kick- they taste like juice but are strong. Our server was very friendly and was able to get me good information for my food allergy. I don't think I would have visited without the recommendations from my friends but I'm glad they encouraged me otherwise. There's a reason this place has been around as long as it has! The only downside was that the tables have backless stools that are bolted to the floor so you can't move them around at all. Get there early- it definitely gets busy. Food was mediocre. I had the chicken enchiladas, which didn't taste fresh and clearly had cheese sprinkled on it and thrown in a microwave. I could have done it at home myself. All the water is bottled and comes with an extra charge. This is the first restaurant in over a decade I have seen do this and it was pretty ridiculous. Either they don't trust their tap water, or it's because of this next part. All of their cutlery and plates are disposable. Plastic forks and knives, and paper plates. The amount of waste this place produces, on top of just being cheap, makes this place's visual appearance suffer drastically. Which leads me to the look of the place. It is very dingy, lots of dust, and clearly not well kept after. Atmosphere is ok, but we didn't get to experience it, since immediately after finishing our meal, wine and my party were pushed out the door to make room for other customers. Just so you know, there were no other customers waiting and there plenty of other tables open. Food is cheap in terms of cost, but so is the quality, service is poor, and the overall experience was dreadful. On top of this, they overcharged me for my food. After trying to explain it, they refused to adjust the bill, even after showing them my receipt and the items I ordered off the menu, and said how the prices did not match. This is a dive bar disguised as a restaurant. We used to come here a while back and it was great but it has definitely taken a dive. They served our food on paper plates. The chicken was tough like it was microwaved and the enchiladas had a slice of cheddar cheese melted on top. There was trash all over the floor. The place was filthy. Though to give them credit, they did start cleaning up the place once we got there but only because they starting getting ready to close up. Only, it was an hour before closing. They even started turning off their lights while everyone was seated and it was obvious people were getting upset. They get away with all this though as they force a mandatory 18% tip on all meals. The "Divey Charm" is gone. Only the "Cheap" remains I used to love this place for the food and the value, but the management has changed for the worse. Charging for water and then policing customers who bring their own is a huge turn-off. They made me bring my child's water bottle back to the car. I have been going to Conejitos since I was a small child. Every time I go I hope for better service, but it continues to go downhill. They have closed most of the restaurant squeezing everyone into the original bar area which doesn't provide much room and in winter it is cold with the door constantly opening! The food came very quickly and the server checked on us constantly, but it was to the point of definitely feeling rushed and pushed out the door. The prices are still good with the exception of nearly $5 for the tiny margaritas they hand out. They also do not offer "free" water. If you want water you need to pay for a bottle which I find absolutely ridiculous. As for the food, it is delicious as always. I wish the environment would improve because it was keep me from going back. the beans with cheese are so yummy. My mouth waters just thinking about it! First of all, the bar was hardly filled and the lady would not let us sit a table. /she made us sit at an oval counter with other customers across from us. My daughter ordered a water with her mealand the waitress said all they offered was bottled water for a cost. The meals are served on paper plates. The prices have doubled since Covid. When we got the bill an 18% service charge was added plus a suggested 20-24% tip. Ah Conejitos, where to begin? It has this mythical, legendary status amongst the Milwaukee locals. Why the legendary status? I'm not sure to be honest. Maybe it's the simple fact they serve the food on paper plates. The price is definitely right if you are on a budget. The margaritas are definitely on point, maybe the best in the city. After that though, there is not much to offer here. The food is not authentic and the place looks rundown. I like a simple, hole in the wall joints but this place just feels old and outdated. The tacos come with lettuce and tomato - gringo style anyone? The menu options are limited and the food just lacks in quality and flavor. There are so many great Mexican restaurants nearby, I would only steer someone here to experience it for what it is: A simple, average and inexpensive meal with some really solid margaritas. Ok. Lots has changed @ Conejitos. We have been long time fans of the place. We love the atmosphere and the simple food. Prices are not too bad either. With that said, things are not what they used to be. We are all generally pushed into the one room and service is not what it used to be. Prices include an automatic 18% gratuity and we've occasionally had a " negative feel" from the host. A recent host was way more positive. We still come and enjoy the food. Went to Conejitos because my husband has always loved the place and we have gone for years... however we had a terrible experience for lunch. For starters, arriving with our 2 young kids and saying we need a table for 6 because 2 more adults were meeting us momentarily, we were denied a table "until our whole party arrived". (told to take our 2 small kids to the bar for the 7 mins until the other 2 arrived. (the restaurant was less than 20% filled) Then when the bill came (after TERRIBLE service) the 20% tip was already on the invoice as well as a place for a tip. $80+ bill for 4 adults and 2 small children for lunch...on paper plates with terrible service?? Lots to unpack here, first we walk in and it is extremely dark and empty. Then my group of 8 was sat at a table that was very tight and claustrophobic. We order our food and the menus were absolutely disgusting, they had food all over them and should've been thrown out. They were paper menus being reused with food all over them it was horrible. Once we got our food it comes on the thinnest and cheapest paper plates I've ever seen, my food almost fell off the plate because they were so thin. The food itself was horrible. Only one person out of my group of 8 finished their plate. The steak was gross it came it literal chunks on a flower shell and the chicken on the enchiladas was grey and watery. There was a choice of beef stew meat? It was very very watery flavorless beef on a tortilla shell. And all our food was flavorless, the meat was very cheap. It is understandable, and the prices are still very affordable for the food you get. I am a little disappointed that they no longer offer complementary chips and salsa. They also recently started adding automatic 18% gratuity to all checks, which seems to be a trend lately. While I understand that servers work hard and deserve to be compensated for their efforts, I was taken aback by this policy. In my opinion, tipping should be at the discretion of the customer. It should be based on the quality of service and the overall dining experience. By adding an automatic gratuity to all checks, the restaurant is taking away the customer's ability to decide how much to tip. Stopped by yesterday while @ the Mobcraft Sour Fest for a quick lunch before heading back for more beer (we had passed by on our way over to the brewery and thought it looked like a place that had been around for a while, so it must have solid food). As others have mentioned, it was pretty full when we arrived late afternoon (probably 1:45ish?) and we either had the option to sit at the bar or wait for an open table in the front room area (the back area looked large and spacious, but alas, this is no longer open/available for seating). No problem - we waited just a minute and a few patrons sat up from a large communal table in the center of the front area and gave us some great food recs. The three of us split a couple of orders of beans/cheese w/chips, chicken mole and beef plate. Everything was delicious, and we were in & out quickly as we desired. No frills (paper plates, water in bottles, paper menus), but tasty fresh food and we left satisfied and ready to take on more of Sour Fest! read more

I stopped here for lunch because it's a Milwaukee icon and yes I was last to the party because everyone has been here already, actually I was in no hurry to try a Mexican restaurant that serves food on paper plates. I have driven past it hundreds of times with no real hurry to try them. The place is diveish and small with C19 taking out most of the seating, one table in the corner and maybe 4 stools at the bar. The menu is amazingly reasonable I noticed and small but the beef enchiladas with rice and beans caught my eye. I ordered a Pacifico beer while ordering take out because it was depressing with all the C19 rules to eat in and the place was just a shell of what it used to be looking at the past pictures. The beef and onion enchilada plate with rice and beans looked ok with plenty of cheese. The beef and onion enchiladas were kind of weird because the beef was soft and had a mushy texture the same texture as the beans so I thought maybe I got bean enchiladas. The rice and beans were ok but nothing special at all. Overall it was boring for a Mexican plate and I don't understand the popularity because the Mexican truck blocks way is way better with flavorful food. I think it's more of a right of passage If you live in the Milwaukee area more than anything else or like White Castle, you either love it or hate it with no middle. read more

The only thing I knew about this place prior to finally giving it a try is that they are known for serving their food on paper plates. I was not particularly interested in going but was convinced by a friend. That time ,I was truly blown away. I had chicken enchiladas with mole and it was probably top three best mole I ever had. Also, the strawberry margarita was and still is one of the best that I have had. And you cannot beat the price! I was also pleasantly surprised about the bean dip that my friend had raved about. Service was great, the food came out fast. It was delicious. If I had written a review after my first experience there, it probably would have been four stars. However, I went back for a second visit the other day and it was disappointing. In spite of sitting at the bar, where service is usually better and more attentive, the bartender made us wait a while just to be able to place our order and then it seemed that he forgot to place the order because we noticed that three tables that arrived after us got their food before us and then we saw him scrambling to put the order in. I enjoyed my meal last time I was there so much that I placed the same order this time. Last time, they put the mole sauce in and on the enchiladas and this time I was told that's not something that they do. These enchiladas were one part chicken, two parts cheese, and three parts onions. Basically an onion enchilada. It was practically inedible. If I based my review only on this experience I would give it a 2. Since there was such a stark contrast between the two visits I decided to go with the average of the two and give it a 3. It's a Milwaukee staple. If you haven't tried it, go. But don't expect something mind-blowing. read more
