It was a fluke that we landed in this seafood restaurant a few Saturdays ago. Sorry, sorry** Bad pun, I know but it just came out! The occasion was Johnny T's "Eat Like a Local" series, an unofficial Yelp event in which we explore different off the beaten path restaurants featuring ethnic dishes. This week was s'pposed to be in what used to be called the Westview neighborhood named after the Westview Country Club on 119 Ave just East of 27 Ave. The Country club is no longer thought the building remains as I don't know what. In any case, the plan was to go to the A&W Root beer stand and hamburger joint that's been there since the 60'. Trouble was, there was a Closed sign on the door due to an oil leak..something like that. So out came Rony's trusty Yelp mobile app and "nearby" was selected. Right nearby was the Conch Heaven Restaurant with some pretty decent reviews. Texting the latecomers, (me) so as not to get lost, we all assembled in this very clean, brightly lit room and enjoyed a meal consisting of Bahamian and Jamaican food. We all ordered something different so we were able to sample a nice assortment of goodies, like steamed snapper, conch fritters, cracked conch, Jerk chicken, and I believe oxtails which I had a miniscule taste of.. All lunch plates came with sides that were distinctly Caribbean such as Johnny Cakes, and macaroni and cheese but a sort of square pancake of it, Very tasty. I enjoyed it all especially my cracked conch ( which for non Floridians is pronounced like "Konk.") They also have a several alcoholic drinks on the menu and we sampled Sky Juice and Bahama Mama. There are also beers like Bud, Guiness, Red Stripe, Kalik, and Smirnoff and wines by the glass and bottle. Service was gracious and very good. Our requests were met with a smile and questions about how we were enjoying everything. No problem requesting separate checks and by the time we were laving about 3pm, the place was starting to fill up Ya, it's no longer the best neighborhood but it's on a main drag right across from Miami Dade College and has it's own ample parking lot and back door to go in and it never occurred to me that I should be wary.. Conch Heaven for the save. Back when our cabal of yelpers entered in to the restaurant on a rainy (monsoon-like, really) Saturday, I had root beer on my mind. We'd planned on dining on drive-in fare in the Westview area of Miami but a grease fire nixed those plans. Not being at all familiar with this part of the city, Rony Mo utilized the handy dandy Yelp app and found a suitable Plan B. After eating here, it was, certainly, worthy of being a Plan A. Conch A has regulars and, I imagine, that if you aren't from around these parts, there's little chance you'll experience what it has to offer... and that's too bad. Even for Miami, Conch Heaven serves a nice slice of Caribbean life that is sure to lift you out of your doldrums. How? Booze. Brightly-colored, sweet booze. One sip of my Bahama Mama rum cocktail and I was ready for a good time. Even better, these bad boys were served in pint glasses and were pretty affordable. Had I known, I would have gotten someone else to drive. I was sad to limit my intake because I could have put a hurt on those bad boys... before they put a hurt on me. If you decide on adding something solid to your liquid lunch, you're in good shape. The food is exactly what you might imagine. Start your meal off with conch fritters. After all, you *are* in Conch Heaven. For $6, you get 12 fritters. What?? Insane. Awesome. Pile it up. My chicken curry (gigantic with a sweet, rather than hot, curry) came with two sides: white rice & baked mac & cheese. I.gorged. Seriously. I couldn't stop eating. No, this isn't haute cuisine. What this is is Sunday, post-church dinner at your Auntie Clara's (Bobby's wife from the islands) house. The only substitution is that your red drink isn't Kool-Aid; it's booze. This is comfort food at its blue-sky, lazy day, sand-between-your-toes best. And, the real kicker? Everything that I ordered (including tax but not tip) came out to $20. Yep. I'd heard of Conch Heaven back when it was Goldies (yes they are/were a part of the Goldies in Nassau) but never ventured there as a) I can already get acceptable Bahamian food close to my house and b) other reviews had made me believe it was in a bit of a rough neighborhood. Anyways, my father noticed that Conch Heaven was on restaurant.com and was looking to get rid of a gift card. He was missing home and was in the mood for conch, so off we went, although I did warn him about the neighborhood. After a 20minute drive we arrived. Yes the neighborhood is a little sketchy, but compared to most of the hole-in-the-wall places it wasn't anything awful. We walked in a grabbed a table - nothing fancy inside, and not many other people eating in (granted it was a Thursday night and I've heard they do most eat-in service on Sundays after church of course). This is probably a place to stick to take-out during the week and we did see a lot of take-out patrons. We were given menus and orders were placed. Prices were reasonable for dinner portions (think HUGE portions as Bahamian's like to eat) and the staff was reasonably friendly - a Jamaican took our orders but a Bahamian came out and made conversation with us and joked about Kalik Gold with my dad. My dad's gf wanted wine - which was limited to moscato or white zinfandel (typical Bahamian taste buds) so don't go there expecting much on the wine. The food came out - 4 heaping plates. Two of us had cracked conch, I had steamed conch and another had fried snapper. Each dish came with peas and rice and 2 additional sides, so I was able to try their macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, Johnny cake and steamed cabbage. Luckily for me they also had guava duff that night so I had a big bowl! The food breakdown - Cracked conch - 3 stars, they need to beat it a bit more. Steamed conch - 3 stars, different from how I make it as it had a marinara taste instead of just tomato paste. Fried Snapper - 5 stars, perfect. Peas and Rice - 5 stars, perfect. Coleslaw - 5 stars, perfect. Macaroni - 4 stars, pretty good. Steamed cabbage - 4 stars. Johnny Cake - 4 stars. Guava Duff - 4 stars, could have used a hint more rum ;) All in all, if I was in the area I'd be back in a heartbeat, but for now my closer Bahamian spot will serve my needs. Portions were huge so you could easily make 2 or 3 meals out of one dinner. Prices were reasonable and the food was authentic. read more

Enjoyed the conch salad, fried conch and pigeon peas and rice. Fried fish lacked seasoning. Service was slow although it was a week night and not busy. Waitress didn't seem to be knowledgeable of the menu items and what was available. No Goombay Punch available which was a main point for the visit. Love to support BOB and Bahamian spots are rare in Miami these days. A good move would be to have wait staff in uniforms and hairnets. read more

I threw an event there for some volunteers and we had a great time. Hennessey, the manager is a stand up guy and the wait staff was very friendly. Being from the West Coast, I've never had Bahamian seafood before. The Conch fritters were too good. Sorry cholesterol levels : / These guys are a great contributor and asset to the local community. Good food, generous portion, and friendly service. I ordered the cracked conch with rice, and the waitress brought me a plate with french fries instead. When I asked her, she immediately said, yes, you did order rice, give me a minute. I took a bite of the fries, decided that it's quite delicious, so I went to the counter and told the girl, don't worry about the rice, I'll just keep the fries. The girl, however, showed me the box of pea and rice in her hand, and said, but I still want you to try it! She gave me a look which suggested that if I refuse the rice she'd be so crestfallen she'd need therapy... While there I saw a customer ordered the fried crab, which looked absolutely delicious. I'd definitely be back to try it! Tip: after you park your car in the lot, entrance is at the far left, the door with a little ramp. I give this place 3 stars... I had the conch balls which were really good but didn't have as much conch inside as they should have. My other friends tried the cracked conch which they weren't that impressed with. I can see why, I would make the batter a bit thicker and conch a but seasoned. The breading was very thin and had no good flavor... I've had better but would spend money on again. The Mac and cheese is something I wouldn't get again. It is $2 for a small slice of baked Mac which I would give a 2/5..... Last but not least, the lemonade was delicious. But not refillable which sucked because you didnt get a good amount for $2. This Bahamian restaurant is a dive with excellent food. We ordered lots...fried conch, whole fried snapper, grilled lobster, grilled shrimp, and hot wings. Cabbage, rice and peas, and rum cake for dessert. Everything was fresh and very good. The grilled lobster and grilled shrimp came in a light brothy sauce with vegetables, cooked well and both really good. Husband's snapper and conch were excellent as well. We weren't expecting the hot wings to be so good, but they were the best wings we've had in a long time. It wasn't a buffalo sauce and not a bbq sauce either, but it was slightly spicy and yummy. Husband is Jamaican and he said the rice and peas were very good. Loved the rum cake too. Imo, portions were huge. Our server was fairly new and she was friendly and wonderful. I really like this place so it is hard for me to give a bad review eventhough my lunch experience yesterday truly deserves it. The food was a little over fried but acceptable and the server was pleasant. The problem was the ambiance. The place was practically empty and as normal I chose a table. As I sat waiting, I noticed my table, seat, the floor underneath my feet had crumbs everywhere. I looked to switch to other tables around me and they too had remains of food. One of the tables were wet as if someone attempt to clean but did a horrible job. The music was too loud & terrible choice that I could not talk on the phone. They really try to give a good quality restaurant feel and well on their way to achieving that but the cleaning needs major improvement. read more

I love this place. It's about 25 miles from my house. When i was attending Broward college, i would always stop by Miami with my boyfriend. We always bought the conch fritters and salad. I had my salad custom made since im allergic to bell peppers. They would make it without a hassle. The salad was in a huge portion. The bahamian bombay is great. This was my piece of bahamas. I traveled there and i really miss it. This comes close to the island food. I also had a grouper and it was huge for the price of $12. The peas and rice were tasty with the sauces. 3.5 Stars just bcuz of the fried shrimp. I tried the jerk chicken and wasn't impressed. Fried conch is ok and the conch salad and fritters are real good. Rice and peas are ok not bad, portions are nice sized. Not to high on their mac n cheese but its not horrible. Like i said overall a 3.5 in my book. I had the oxtails dinner with fried bananas and cabbage. I added a 4oz lobster tail and a Bahama Mama cocktail. The food came fast was cooked to perfection. I can tell they use fresh ingredients and our server Sade was very gracious. I tasted my husbands conch salad and it was FANTASTIC. WORSE (PHONE) CUSTOMER SERVICE AND GUAVA DUFF EVER - Third time buying the dessert and each time it was really really bad. I purchased it to at 1pm - went home to eat it an hour later, it was hard as rock, rubbery with absolutely NO guava. If must have been 7-10 days old. As you know, that's a pastry that should be served fresh daily. I called to "complain" (actually advise) management at 3:58pm. A guy answered the phone. I asked for a manager and was put on hold for for 9 minutes. The manager never came to the phone so I hung up. I called again at 4:06pm. Kid you not, they let the phone right for 10 minutes and never picked up except to disconnect the call. The same thing happened when I tried to call back at 4:17pm. The eager beaver than I am, I tried again... but unfortunately no luck. The food here is actually good, really good. The dessert, no so much and that's all I wanted to tell the manager. He/She could not have possibly known that the kitchen was serving such an uneatable dish. I thought that they should know. Hopefully this gets to the owner, who should have someone flown in from Nassau (my grandmother would be ideal), to train the chef and all that would like to make this dessert again in the future. Love the customer service and the food. I went here because my cousin recommended this place and I was craving conch. When went on a Saturday night around 8pm and it was pretty packed to the point where everyone was standing waiting for their food. Because it's packed the women didn't know who ordered and who didn't nor did they greet us when we walked in. But after our order was taken 15mins after walking in ... The women who took our order were friendly and helpful by answering my questions...... We waited another 30 mins for our food to be ready. I believe next time I go I'll probably call in my order first so I can cut the wait time. This is our third time at this restaurant . We called ahead to place the order, 10 minutes before we arrived. We purchased 3 cracked conch and 1 scorched conch. Simply delicious! The young lady that took my order was very helpful and nice. The food was good and sauces as well. The conch fritters need more conch in it, but overall the food was good. I was excited to come here because in the past I had one of my Bahamian favorites, Tuna & Grits and great conch salad But today I came for lunch and could be more upset about the quality of the food and customer service from the Womxn said to be the kitchen manager. My friend and I started with sky punch but from the sky, quickly when our order of conch fritters had something in it that BROKE HIS TOOTH! When he went to the bathroom to check his tooth my conch burger came out, except it was NOT conch, it was fish. When I sent it back my new conch burger came out.... WITH FRIED FISH ON THE SIDE! It's clear that the integrity of the cooks/chefs here are tragic. I can't begin to explain how frustrating this has been. The kitchen manager LAUGHED when she came to us and we told her what happened. When I returned the conch burger with fish fried on the side the chef yell at our waitress (who was the best part) and didn't even come out to apologize. The fried conch we order (that I tasted before my burger came back) had no flavor and we ended up not eating any of the rest. Horrible restaurant. I'm placing a to go order through a lady who had a New Orleans accent and had a few questions after being told that I was looking at an old menu online. My order came up to over $50 and I wanted to know if they still had the fried shrimp since I was told that the menu was old. I guess I asked too many questions because the lady put me on hold and then a gentle grabbed the phone. I told him I was talking to a lady and want to know if she told him my order and he said "no, she just told me to take the order". I was like damn... she just passed me on to the next guy. I told him not to worry about it and I'm just going to cancel the order and he said okay. You can tell they have no ownership or interest in the success of the restaurant. The food is good but portions are inconsistent and that's the only reason why I am giving 2 stars. The customer service is horrid. The girl named Nique who works here has a piss poor attitude and for no reason. It's quite simple if you don't like your job, then you should find a new one. I came 2 days in a row and spent more than a fair share of my hard earned money. At the end of the day, don't act like you're doing me a favor when you service a customer....customers are keeping you in business by coming back.
