This restaurant is located down a small alley just steps of the Queen Street mall. There are…read moreplenty of seats inside and several tables on the patio. They have a decent selection of wine and beers and an nice selection of spirits to make a good number of cocktails, if you wish. For an appetizer, I ordered the fried calamari. The squid itself were slightly larger and thicker than What one would find in the US. There is a nice crust with a bit of pepper and other spices Which made the calamari taste better than most calamari I've had before. It comes with a tartar sauce on the side but I found that it was too heavy for the calamari. I preferred just the drizzle of lemon juice from the slices of lemons served with the dish. For my main dish, I ordered the chicken salad. It was delicious. It had chicken, obviously, arugula, red cabbage, corn, couscous, and a few other ingredients all tossed in a very light dressing. The salad was quite filling but did not make me feel heavy after eating it. My meal was quite different than the heavier Mexican dishes I would typically find in the US. I found the dishes here more flavorful and lighter. Usually, after eating Mexican food in the US, I would need a nap. After eating at Communa Cantina, I had plenty of energy to walk around the CBD all afternoon. To wash it all down I had a glass of Prosecco. A nice crisp drink for a warm day.

Good Mexican food and drinks. Lots of variety and big portions. Can customize certain entrees. Love…read morethe bowls and the chip tasting board!! Friendly service. Can eat inside or out. Not a huge place, best to make a reservation.

This is no fine-dining experience but with hearty meals, reasonable prices and friendly staff I'll…read morebe sure to be going back here. I tried this place out on a public holiday and they obviously wasnt expecting so many people as they were fairly under-staffed. This meant that the service was often slow but it couldn't really be helped - it wasn't like she was just standing around ignoring us! The menu is extensive with local dishes from all over the latin america precincts. Further, they do a great taco deal where you can buy any four of the 19 different taco (including 4 vegetarian options) for only $24! The soft shell tacos are well sized so by the time you have finished the fourth you are perfectly sated. The restaurant is decorated with various Latin American ornaments which adds to the cozy atmosphere with their bright colours and funky patterns. Its a shame that all the tables are covered by a big paper sheet (were we meant to bring our own colouring pens for when our conversation drys up?) and some of the plates were plastic but this may be aimed at families with kids which are messy or something...?? It looked like a family run restaurant and they obviously work well together creating a successful business with many patrons and since I'm definitely going to go back, they've certainly worked their latino voodoo well!

This little hidehole is the perfect example of something good coming out of the suburbs. You really…read morewouldn't know it was there - perhaps even if you *knew* it was. Once inside though you can seem Villa Maria is no shrinking violet. Bright colours, laltino beats and authentic air will accompany the meal. As with Daniel B. I made for the four taco option - it seemed the easiest way to try as much as possible. WARNING it is for the greedy guts and I didn't quite finish *shame*. I will be going back for the mole, to listen to the once a month live music and to try one of the tamarind margaritas - see you there! Just make sure you book!
