A good range of stuff including kids and Japanese section. A lot of these stores have all the sick stuff right out front and I'm mainly here for my son so I like the fact they have the kids stuff up toward the from. It's too bad comic books seem to be a sort of lost corner of the arts. Like FaceBook the whole universe is full of pedestrian crap when clearly you can do great things drawing stories in a little sequence of frames. At 6 my son started drawing these quite original stories with fantastic little vignette characters and reading Bone or whatever was a way of keeping him into it. I remember when he first started doing flip notes on his Nintendo DS with the little frame-over-light-box sequences and sound-overs. I suddenly saw the connection between comics (odd it's another word for comedians) and film (-making). I got him a Wacom tablet but all the software on the PC and Mac was either at rudimentary or effete-tech. Later he and his buddy started doing Lego stop-frame with video editors. There is still a gap there sadly. And since they are all into games it all turns passive like watching TV although there is a creative element to Garry's mod and I guess you can do film there with tools like Henry's Tool (love the guy next door - and downstairs in the basement - names these frameworks have). Anyway he is a pre-teen now I guess according to the latest brain science all those flashing connections in their circuitry get halved here in the next few years and he already cares about the social aspects of it all more than is healthy but to a degree that is normal. So I have to stop and reflect back when I had a few I instruments and desperately wanted a little Tascam 4-track cassette recorder in order to stitch together my own little creative visions with an old Stratocaster and what not. I never got one and when I went to a jazz club with Ben Smally at 15 I saw how it was all going to be late nights and 2nd hand smoke in the dim lights with a crowd at the FaceBook-level of musical IQs. I lost my beautiful Ampeg in the divorce some years back but what I will never get back is my Leslie 760 god a Stratocaster coming through those spinning horns I guess Clapton used to do that. But I admire Page more and my old synapses must be far far more pared down than 50% and after a few decades I can't even play Gilmour and Knopfler was always out of reach. They say Page used little (Valco) Supros and National had a version you can still find another lost manufacturing great nevermind Fender. And these days you can get Tascam equipment that runs on an iPad. My nickname in high school was straight and the sublime plink of the maple fretboard sounds ok on the ones made in Mexico so I ordered one today and will grab a Valco on eBay and figure out what kind of Tascam I need. Maybe I can teach my son to play the bass he seems to have inherited the gift somewhat. For I guess a few K we can find his next personality-building life experience if I'm lucky. In the meanwhile I see semi-local folks like Kazuo Yang and Kim doing things with meaning so I pop into Comic Experience or Green Apple (on my way to the B Star bar) to see if there is anything interesting coming out. I never could draw with a damn but can visualize well (I remember coming up with a story about the Pillsbury Doughboy being put into the oven by some stoned teens replete with imagery of his little white mits browning crisp scratching at the glass while they watched him puff right up - poking him in the tummy for a giggle is just a suggestion of what other fun you might have with such a character). I stopped in here with my brother after picking over the game store next door (comic shop and game store on the same block? Woohoo!) and was really impressed. I've come back several times since, and have always left happy and with a book under my arm. First off, the staff here is incredible. There isn't any of that attitude you get from other places, either for feeling weird for being a girl, feeling weird for not being a comics snob, or feeling weird because you are the only one who showered in the shop. There is a huge variety of staff here. Someone for everyone's tastes, really. Two female workers, one young, one older. Two male workers, one young, one older (owner, I'm guessing) and sometimes grouchy seeming, but really friendly when I asked him a question. There may be other employees, but I've only ever seen those four on the random days I pop in. Every employee has helped me out when I have a question. They don't just sit there and glare at you like in some places. They walk over and get the book for me, they suggest books that are similar to the ones I like, they geek out with you over comics. (Last part depends on the staff, but like I said, there's one for everyone) There is a huge selection of graphic novels, and they are neatly organized. Not so many back issues, but I honestly don't care about those since I just wait for the book of them to come out. If I can't find something, I can get it ordered. I discovered Crime comic books here, by the way, because of the way they organize things. It's awesome! The adult section is also huge compared to other comic stores I've been in, but not in a skeezy way. It's just sitting there in the back, looking like it belongs as much as all the other books. Which I like, cause I don't feel dirty browsing them, especially since there are award winning pornos by people like Dan Clowes back there. The kids section is pretty cool. My brother is into that more than I am, but he's always found something he likes. The staff also always gets it right on recommending kid's books. Jake has liked everything they've told him to read, and it's not typical kid stuff like spider man. (Also, in response to Dani B.'s review, I asked the same question about the out-of-print books when I found them on Amazon. An employee explained it to me though, and it makes sense: Amazon has a lot of storage space for cheap, so they can stock up on books. That means that even when something goes out of print, and a comic store doesn't have them because they only have space for two copies, Amazon has space for a lot and can continue selling their leftover stock. The same works for other online retailers who don't have a store front to pay for. Also, things go in and out of print all the time. So if something is out of print one day, it could be in print the next month, and if you don't check back with your local store, you'll never know that they can get it too! And also, I was told that comic stores get their stock from a diff. distributor than regular book stores or super stores (like Amazon) so it's not weird to find that Amazon has a book, but that a comic store doesn't. ANYWAY, I just wanted to tell everyone this because I thought the exact same thing and was taken aback until I got this answer, which makes a lot of sense. I've been able to buy plenty of novels (not graphic, actual books) off Amazon that I know are out of print because I am a bookworm, so it makes sense that the same applies for comics. And I like supporting the locals, so keep supporting your hood stores, everyone! read more

If this place says they are going to open at 11am and close at 7pm then thats what they should do and show up on time to work like the rest of the working productive population of people. Came in on WEDNESDAY to pick up the new issues...got there at 6:35pm and there doors were closed!!! ON A WEDNESDAY!! On another day i got there at 11am when they said they were going to open waited around for an hour and nobody was around to open the door....so i just left The store itself is great with a lot of awsome back issues to choose from but i rarely get to go in there STORE....BE ON TIME PEOPLE!!!! parking around the area is horrible as well.....i will not be going back to this place until i hear they got their act together or new management takes over..... As with most things, comics go hand in hand with it. Whether it's playing games, writing reviews or even para-sailing, you can always include a copy of the latest Spider-Man to go with it. This is one of the better comic book stores in the city. The staff is knowledgeable, the selection is good, plenty of room to schmooze with your local readers and it's located in a great spot. One last thing to add! Although I miss the antics and humor that Rockin' Rob gave me, the new staff if pretty cool. Especially that new girl, she knew her stuff, although I disagree with some of her taste in comics, like her dislike for fine series such as Kick-Ass and Secret Invasion. read more

There's no doubt that this is one cool comic store. But I have a pretty big problem with one of the staff members here. The fat goth guy (the douche with the long black hair) wasn't too helpful or at all friendly when I was asking about Sin City comics. Maybe it was obvious that I'm not a comic book fan or a regular. Regardless, no one should have to put up with a worker like this. His one-sentence answers and his inability to take his eyes off his hentai comic are as good as saying, "buy your comics at Borders, bro!" I suggest looking around with your headphones on so you don't have to deal with this guy when he's flapping his lips. read more
