One of the best comic book shops in the country. Trust me. I go to A LOT of comic shops. Every time I'm in SF I have to come here. They have it ALL except for CGC graded stuff which is fine by me. Indy books, superhero classics, staff picks, new comics, value bundles, and more. The two things that separate this shop are 1. The graphic novel book club which does a talk and a signing. You can get signed books for cover price which is amazing. You can also join the club from anywhere in the country and would highly recommend. 2. They write up blurbs on upcoming solicits. I love when Brian really let's his commentary go. I have tried stuff I would have never read if it wasn't for his words swaying me. Brian knows what he's talking about and has great taste. He's also super friendly which makes supporting this shop even better. read more

The kind and helpful service was a huge win for Comix Experience not far from Alamo Square in SF. I brought my sister-in-laws there and we browsed for about 15 minutes. In that time, the woman working the front was able to help us out twice. I also heard her catching another customer up on all the comics he was asking about (the employee was very knowledgeable). I bought a couple of zines and to be honest this is the main reason I'd come back. While there selection of regular comics seemed to be sufficient enough, not everyone sells zines so it's a great feeling to find them. The employee even said they'd be happy to carry my zine if I can bring a few copies in. (Awesome) Finally, they had a two dollar bin up front and my sister-in-law bought a hardcover Spider-Man graphic novel at that price. Great deal. read more

Today, I went all the way downtown to Union Square and back out to the Sunset, but before I went back home, I decided to revisit Divisadero St. The corridor is still open and vibrant during the late stage of covid. Divisadero St. would not be thwarted by covid. I had not visit Divisadero in almost the whole year. I decided to visit Comix Experience again and I was looking through the $1 comix section. They have rows and bins of used comics. I found some rare comics for $1 each, but she let me walk out with them for free. They make magnets and one said "hot pot." They have the most popular comics and it's a fun hip shop on Diviz. They have comic stores in San Francisco and they are different from each other. Thanks for this nice visit. read more

I feel a bit ashamed that I haven't done a proper review since I first visited the store several years back. Now that my girlfriend and I have been going weekly for quite some time, I can say that this is definitely one of the best comic shops in the city and certainly a gem for Lower Haight. First, it really starts with the people. Everyone there is so friendly, funny, knowledgeable, and not pretentious. Second, they have some kick ass events with artists, writers, etc. And of course, last but not least, they've got all your weekly comics (and more) to tide you over 'til the next issues. My review is for the Kids Graphic Novel of the Month club. I subscribed for my kid at the beginning of the pandemic when the library was closed. It has been so great we have continued for the last year and half and are still going. I have been really impressed by the quality and diversity of the graphic novels they select, the reliability of the shipments, and their communications. I love that they offer monthly author talks, but my kid is not interested in those so we only did one. I have read and enjoyed several of the selections. read more

We arrived at 4:52pm on 4/9 hoping to grab a trade paperback we've been wanting. We have been here before because of the TPB selection. We are avid collectors and like supporting these shops. We were in town from the East Bay and made a point to race over to grab it in between our errands in the city. The workers were locking the door and getting in their car as we arrived at the door. Didn't have a care in the world. What a crappy way to run business. Between reading other weird business practices and this we will not be making a point to stop here going forward. read more

This bookstore has an amazing collection from many, many different authors and publishers. You can easily pick up the complete series of different styles and types of stories. You want violence? It has it. You want horror? Yep. You want romance, you got it. You want "adult" material, definitely a wall of graphics at the back. I picked up some Stephen King comics. They are also dog friendly with good and bright space. Yes, it's definitely an experience to come here to find your inner comic child. read more

I was on my way to gamescape when a copy of Batman 89 caught my eye at the window. I'm very glad I stoped in for a look. I found an awesome Alien patch while I snagged my comic. Had a very delightful exchange with the shopkeeper about Batman and Alien. I will definitely be back on my next trip to the bay. Everything about this little shop was inviting. I switched on some Saturday morning cartoons last week in an effort to relive my childhood, and boy was that a mistake. Whatever effort animators placed in quality cartoons went like shit falling in a fan and out the window. Take, for example, selected dialog from the contemporary masterpiece known as "Dinosaur King," a cartoon that blends finally two of man's great loves: playing cards and pterodactyls... "I can practically feel that super impact card in my hand already. HA HA HA HA." *cut to commercial of a bottle of Sunny D breakdancing* "Go, Sunny! Go... Go, Sunny!" Anyway, the effort resulted in failure. Luckily, some childhood mediums only refine like wine. Comix Experience sells such a medium, with a great selection of comics - new, old, collections, trades, etc. - in a store that's friendly, hip and clean (those are also my requirements for a girlfriend, by the way). So while I can't find a vestige of my youth via weekend cartoons, I'll always know where I can look instead... I'll just need grownup money to buy it. :( read more

Went to Comix Experience, on San Francisco's Divisadero Street. Got there at 945 am to wait for 10 am opening on December 2 to look for a copy of Daredevil 25. Saw three on the rack at cover price, took one to cashier to pay and was told by the manager that she will not sell them. They were going for 25 to 30 bucks per copy on Ebay at the time. She took the copy that I had picked and she went to the rack to take the other two copies off the rack. I told her it was wrong since the copy that I had picked out was on the rack displayed for sale. She then laughed at me. You folks decide if this was proper conduct. read more

I bought my very first graphic novel here (Harvey Pekar)! I was very nervous that the guys that worked there were going to think I was a poseur, but my boyfriend assured me that this was not the case, that I was buying "high brow" stuff and that the guys thought I was cool. Aww. In any case, this is less Trekkie than Cards & Comics Central. Lots of indie stuff and a very clean store make for a pleasant comic shopping experience. I'm not normally a big comic books guy; my geekiness trends in other directions. However, it's sometimes fun to check the shops out anyway, and this place has a great selection. From small-print, obscure offerings to entire shelves of Superman and Batman, to the surprisingly large rack of "erotic comics", they had it all and the proprietor knew what he had and where it was. Not much in the way of decor, the sparseness definitely emphasizes that the focus is on the comics and graphic novels; this is a solid choice for those who are in it for the goods. Brian, the Head Cheese (his title, not mine), wrote me a very nice note clarifying that they DO in fact carry comic strip compilations (ie. Peanuts, Calvin & Hobbes); I was simply so overwhelmed by all the serial comics that I didn't notice them! TRIVIA: Comic books originated with Japanese manga in the 18th century, but really came of age when the format premiered in America in 1934 ("Famous Funnies"). You can quickly tell that the owner of Comix Experience - or at least the guy working there that evening - is very proud of his collection. Comix Experience has a wide variety of comics, making it a perfect place to get gifts for all your comic-loving friends. I came here with my boyfriend who was looking for an Invader Zim comic. Love that series. I was busy roaming around the small comic store and perusing the Japanese comics section (and of course XKCD) and exploring what other comics I might be into. Children...this is the best comic store in the city. I've been coming here for the past 12 years...no joke. If they had 6 stars... why, -9 times out of ten, you can park (in the white tow away zone in front) -Rob, the big dude with long hair, is cool. He's always holding court and talking a little shit. And, on Sundays, he always has a football game on. -Every time I'm in another neighborhood or town buying books, I always feel shorthanded with the new week's selection. I go to CE and they have it all. -I got the Star Wars trilogy on the cheap. -The owners mom is a big social worker/ homeless advocate in the city. -If you don't know what to look for Rob will set you straight and turn you onto some cool shit. -If your done you got the French cafe below the Metro Hotel, Page Street Bar, or even Phuket Thai. Comics work up an appetite! -it used to freak me out but they have a huge indie comic scene in there. It's difficult to find a comic book store with books you've never seen before. The selection of independent comics and graphic novels is well done. Comix Experience is a medium sized store that is utilized effectively. Why is it that all comic book storage rooms look like a mess but they don't put up a simple curtain to conceal this? Comix Experience was a pleasant stop on what turned into a 10 mile walk around the city. We were showing my friend around San Francisco, and on the walk we came across Comix Experience and I had to walk in. I was greeted by the single staff member - while the store isn't big, she was doing an impressive job of balancing time and advise among myself and the other patrons. Again, the shop isn't huge, but even better the shop isn't a giant cluster of singles racks that requires you to squeeze past other patrons. Rather there are shelves along all the walls for recent singles and Trade Paperbacks, and some well placed central racks for more. There was a table for cheap back issues that if we had more time would have been raided. Everything is organized well by Publisher or grouped in the indie section. If you are like me, you are thankful for the solid Image rack. Now back to the service - while I did a quick run through of the newer stuff, as I was up to date with most of my trades, and as I didn't want to walk all day long with the heavier comics, I asked for suggestions on new stuff, and was cheerfully provided with a lot of recommendations. I left with the most recent East of West, but for the new stuff picked up based on her recommendations Southern Bastards, Low (which looks excellent), Robert Kirkman's Outcast, and The Fade Out. So, if you are in that area and looking for some new comics, and especially if you need some suggestions I recommend coming to this place. I love this comic book store. I look in the window everyday and go in every weekend to check-out the new releases. They have a good selection of old, new, graphic novels, manga and magazines. They even sell local artists mini comics from time to time! Don't miss their free table at the front! I have gotten some awesome posters there. I also like that dramatic movie soundtracks blare out of the speakers in the store. It adds to the mood. The guys that work here always wear black and are like the Simpson's version of the comic book guy but with more anger at the state of the world of comics with a twist of metal. But you can tell they love what they do. Take a chance and ask them for a recommendation...for them it is like asking about a fine wine. They will sell you what they recommend and on numerous occasions I have heard them say "Trust me, if you don't love this book, bring it back and I will give you a refund." I think that is pretty dang cool. They also do a free monthly newsletter to share their opinions and let you know what new stuff to be excited about. Find it at the counter and on the free table. I came here looking for a few recent back issues of the Walking Dead, The guy behind the counter looked up from his computer ad said hi, I looked around and found a few of the issues I'm looking for, but not all. I then go up to the counter and ask if they have any more any place else in the store. His response " I don't know look in the bins". Rather put off by his lack of knowledge I proceeded to look. Nope nothing not a one, not even a divider for that comic. I would expect that if you work in a comic book store you would have an in-depth knowledge of the inventory in your store, He made no attempt to suggest other titles or let me know when the next issue would be arriving. I was at Cards and Comics Central, looking for the new "Batman: Battle for the Cowl" arc series that just came out when they said that there was none in stock. The girl at the counter kindly directed me towards Comix Experience, and boy was it the most useful piece of advice ever. After school let out, I set out right away to indulge in my love for comics and hit Comix Experience. Somewhere along Lower Haight, this place totally blends in with its surroundings. As you approach the store, it barely looks like a comic store at first glance until you actually look at what's inside. Almost like a polar bear in the snow. You think it's just snow, but when you get close, you realize just how awesome that pile of snow really is. Once you step in, you know that you haven't stepped in here by mistake. It's that eager little comic lover inside you that pulls you in. The new comics are in the back, and back issues (up to a certain point) populate the rest of the shelves around the store. CE has a wide variety to select from which is really cool, so it seems like there's always something new to see. The staff is helpful and quick. I asked where to find something and they don't hesitate to lend a hand. The only thing I've got against the place is that they don't have sleeves and backboards for the comics to keep them in nice condition, like what I'm so used to. Other than that, CE is a really great comic store with an amazing selection of comics, graphic novels, indie comics, and more. Not the nicest shop girl working the counter (Yes, honey, you NEED to stop playing World of Warcraft for a second to help me - UGGGGH!) but their selection is decent. As other people have already stated, there are a lot of independent comics sold at Comix Experience. For the most part, you can get some great stuff from this place and it is relatively well organized. However, I'm still a huge fan of Isotope. We stopped in here on a whim on our way to dinner. What a find! My 11 yr old loves comics with strong female heroes, and we found a 25 pack of assorted strong women. Wow! Friendly staff. The woman who helped us went above and beyond to help us find the entire published man eaters series. If we lived near this place would be a frequent stop. read more

The Staff are cool & very knowledgeable on their comic books & are honest on what's good and what sucks balls. Nathan is the man. Cameron will be missed. I LOVE COMIX EXPERIENCE!!! There are many great comic shops in SF, but this is "my" store. I have discovered many a great read in here and this is the shop that got me buying/reading single issues. I love the layout of the store - it is full of material but well-organized, and seems spacious even when multiple customers are in there (pretty often!). I love that they put all the new books in a special area - makes it really easy for frequent customers to check out the new stuff and find what you came in for. They are mainly geared toward an adult readership, meaning it's 95% books - very few toys, cards, etc in sight which is appreciated - they do have a lot of fun comics for kids too though :) They also have a sizable independent/local comix section that sets them apart from other shops. I LOVE that they know their main clientele so well that they order a ton of copies of the popular books so they are almost never sold out of the best stuff! I've been to other shops many times and been sooo disappointed when a new release is already sold out, it just seems like bad business and makes me not want to waste time going to those places. Especially when I know CE will for sure have what I want, every time. Well done, Comix Experience! The owner (Brian) is very knowledgeable and can be a bit surly, but just as often I have seen him be quite personable, and he obviously loves what he does. Younger manager Matt is a swell, super friendly dude who makes great recommendations! (EDIT: Matt is no longer there, but Doug and Emma are also really fun, welcoming, knowledgeable, awesome people!!) If you want assistance the staff are happy to help, but unless you ask, you are free to poke around endlessly and they will not bother or hassle you. Most books are not bagged/boarded or wrapped, so you can actually browse, read, preview to your heart's content, which is fantastic! Many other stores bag everything so you are forced to buy before even peeking inside. I also enjoy the bargain bins near the front of the store and have found some great stuff in there. Overall, one of my fave establishments in SF! A+++ will shop again and again PS. Emma also does the BEST comic shop window displays EVER!!!! This shop is clean and organized really well. the variety of small press and Independent comics are like no other for a shop of that size. This place does have an intimidating feel to it when you walk in because it's always really silent and classical music is always playing in the background. The shopkeeper sort of resembles the music snobs behind the counter at some record store that almost exclusively sell obscure vinyl and scoff at your CD purchase as he's ringing you up. However he is NOT and he's pretty cool, he doesn't give you the "FUCK OFF" look when you ask him for help. read more

Date: March 3, 2009 Well worth the crowded afternoon rush hour MUNI bus ride down Divisadero Street to get there. Comix Experience has an impressive range of comic book collections (paperback and hardbound) from both independent and mainstream comic book publishers. I prolly spent 20 to 30 minutes browsing before deciding what to buy: The Nightly News (Image) by Jonathan Hickman and Little Star (Oni) by Andi Watson. Despite the impressive range of merchandise I was a bit disappointed by the cold, spartan feel of the place. The display shelves are the decor; there is no carpeting. I was also disappointed that they carry some manga but that it doesn't comprise a significant percentage of their stock. I'm not sure what the ideal comic book store looks or feels like but its shelves should resemble those at Comix Experience which seems to have something for everyone who is interested in sequential art. read more
