They had the comic Saga I wanted and put it on hold on for me when I called in. My new addiction.. and this store supports it. Also the store owner also suggested similar reads. He was easy to talk to. We talked about the death of Julie Strain a model who was often drawn on the comic Heavy Metal. And he gave my dog treats he had behind the counter! I liked the selection they had and I heard from a friend that they held events at the store! It was a fun experience. Clean store and organized. Two comics for $30. When planning our recent vacation to San Francisco, my teen son requested a trip to a comic book store in the city. His plan was basically to get a comic book based in San Francisco FROM a comic book store in San Francisco. If you know me, I love a challenge and researching potential places to go to and experiences to be had. All of the comic book stores were located equally inconvenient to where we were staying in an amazing AirBnB in Daly City and the attractions we were planning to finally get to experience since we didn't travel with our dog this trip. (That's why this trip was all about the tourist trap attractions...LOL). Amazing Fantasy got my attention by many of the reviews as well as the general look and feel of the store. I knew that my son would LOVE this store. It doesn't hurt that the late Stan Lee had actually been there! My son was a HUGE Stan Lee fan. He even wore one of his Stan Lee shirts that day just for our visit to Amazing Fantasy. When we pulled up to this store, my son realized that it is the exact same store he saw two years ago when we were driving by and he got the idea that led us here. Fate? Maybe. Needless to say... he was even more excited to go in. Amazing Fantasy did not disappoint! He was amazed by all of the memorabilia and the extent of the comic books and collections available. The prices were what I expected, as well. Frank, the owner, is also amazing. He was very personable, told us about Stan Lee's visit and how genuine he was, talked to my son about cosplay, and appreciated our business. When we asked if my son could get a picture with Frank, he offered Captain America's shield for my son to hold for the picture. My son brought a few pieces of one of his Spider-Man cosplays just for this purpose, too. He had an amazing time. We will definitely be back when in the area. Absolutely not recommended. I brought my son to a new comic store on a Sunday afternoon. He picked out maybe 5 comics totaling about $30 as his limit, only for them to unilaterally change the price on him at checkout. The first issue he put down, marked at $5, the proprietor changed to $40. This is a 12 year old with a weekly allowance and they literally wanted to charge him 8x the price that was listed. And I'm not talking about the original price of the comic, this was bagged with a sticker noting $5. Honestly, I'm not even sure how it's legal to run a business this way. Believe the other reviews, do not go here. They will just change the price of everything anyways. read more

To be fair, Frank used to be a good shop owner. I used to value his comic book recommendations. However, after the pandemic, things have changed for the worse. I understand that retail shops have been hit hard, but it's sad to see that Amazing Fantasy has resorted to bait-and-switch tactics. When the store reopened its doors, I tried to support them by buying a trade paperback off its shelf. When I brought it to the counter, Frank claimed that "someone else had reserved the book" and refused to sell it. That was weird, I thought, especially since the book has been sitting on his shelf for quite a while. A few weeks later, I attempted to buy another graphic novel, which has also been collecting dust on the store's shelf. When I brought it to Frank, he immediately doubled the cover price of the book. As someone who has bought multiple books from him before, at first I was in disbelief. He has always charged cover price for his books. I then read the previous reviews and saw that there was a suspicious pattern indeed - he has been raising the prices of books at checkout, trying to squeeze more money from his buyers. Now I just feel sad for Frank. It's pathetic that a formerly well-run place has to resort to tactics like these just to earn a few more bucks. It's no wonder this store continues to lose its longtime customers. read more

I wrote a review of Amazing Fantasy 13 years ago when i lived in that neighborhood. It was my go to place...small but friendly with a knowledgeable staff. My review was favorable. Thirteen years, three moves, and now living across the bay in Berkeley it is still my go to place. Frank is a gem...kind, knowledgeable, keeps track of his customers. I can always turn to him for advice on new reads. He also has legit comic book cred, as evidenced by the two framed photos of the times Stan Lee visited. The shop may be small but if Stan came by (twice!) you know this store punches way above it's weight. Frank is the real deal and a great guy. It was past time to update my review to highlight how great this place is. I am hopeful this store will be there for decades to come. read more

Out of pure loyalty and nostalgia, I'm going to review this store by the legacy of it's owner, Frank. I remember when Frank worked at Comics & Comix, and in fact they had a location on this very block (quite possibly this very storefront) as well as one on Columbus in North Beach. Frank was always very kind to all of the neighborhood kids, so it's great to see he went from being an employee to a business owner. He's the type of local retail merchant every neighborhood should support. The store is nice for it's size, but as an infrequent visitor, I've noticed they could fill the void which SF comic shops are missing and maybe focus on more vintage golden, silver and bronze age comics as well as possibly even the niche of original artwork as well as try to get some in-store signings by comic creators to separate 'em from the pack and take that leap light years ahead of any other shops in the Bay Area. read more

Hubby seems to like comic books so we went it. It's small and very organized. The guy working there seems to know his stuff and is very helpful. I heard him helping a customer and telling her he'll check around to find her the book she is looking for. Hubby picked up Watchmen comic book -he didn't buy it. He said there's going to be a movie out soon for it. Oh joy, can't wait. Here are a bunch of guys who know their media from golden age to the modern day indie.If you like horror over the cape and cowl there's a home for you here too. Location is very convenient and there are plenty of places to pick up a coffee and sit back and toss yourself into the imaginations of comic book legends. if you want a NO hassle, nonjudgemental, low key place to pick up your comics.. This place in San Francisco is garbage... I spent an hour sifting though backstock which clearly had not been organized in a while. Every single comic was priced from $5-$20 clearly many of which were not boarded. Get to the register and he starts checking prices and telling me how much more each book is. Look if I go to a store and there are no prices on the books I will ask. There were obvious price tags on each and every comic. Someone even pointed out not honoring the price tags is against the law just saying. At least have the common sense of posting a sign near the comics so I don't waste an hour sitting on your floor pointlessly doing your job for you. read more

I went here for a stan lee signing about a year ago. Pretty cool that they have celebrity signings. Four stars. I don't really buy comic related items anymore so cant comment on that. read more

Wow!!! I will definitely be coming back and I will be bringing my comic nerd boyfriend! Haha! I stopped by randomly thinking, well this place is nice and SF might have this more unique comic I'm looking for that I could not find in Davis and the east bay. (It was LaGuardia by Nnedi Okorafor and Dark Horse comics). The shop owner was instantly very helpful and had remembered that he had put it in the 50 cents box because someone claimed it had a tear. He found it, I was extremely happy and it was $0.54, and he gave me a bag and board. It was worth significantly more than that, didn't even have a tear, and was such a great experience! Superman's cape. Batman's utility belt. Green Lantern's lantern. Ever wish you can see what they look like in real life? Yeah, me too! Well, at Amazing Fantasy you can! Color me awe inspired. Every time I let the inner geek in me back out, I find myself at Amazing Fantasy. And every time I'm there, I always catch myself the first few seconds standing with my mouth wide open, staring up at that flowing red cape, or that yellow belt with who knows what's inside, or that lantern that I'm sure would light up if only I had a power ring to charge. Mind you, these are not toys. No sir. These are actual life-sized replicas. And if you prefer Avengers Mansion to the Hall of Justice, they also have items like Thor's hammer and Captain America's shield on display. I know, right! Ok nerd, reel it back in a lil. So AF carries comic books, graphic novels, action figures, books, T-shirts, cards, etc. Pretty much anything a good comic book store should have. And the fact that they've been around forever when several other comic book stores have come and gone must mean they're doing something right. The store space is not as big as I'd like, so the majority of their stock is new items I'd say. The middle of the floor does have a substantial amount of back issues though. But the walls are covered with shelves that are almost overflowing with stock, so you'd be hard pressed to walk in here and not walk out with something cool in your geeky hands. Every time I find myself on Irving, I make it a point to pop my head in. Although my wallet can't really afford to support that old habit on a weekly basis, I will drop a penny or two on the occasional Walking Dead graphic novel or try to keep up with my Sheldon Cooper T-shirt collection. Sure you can probably find a lot of stuff online, but where's the fun in that??? And if you do make a trek out here, be sure to bring your parking karma cuz we all know parking out there can be a female dog. Excelsior! read more

I'm trying to decide whether this place is more *amazing* or *fantastic*. I am not a comic book freak, unless you count Archie and Little Dot, which ranked among my favorites as a child growing up in a family with an empire of Southern California Comic book and baseball card stores. Yes. It's true. My grandparents retired when they were VERY young and opened a bazillion comic shops with family money. I therefore grew up with every girly comic in production past and present as well as two complete sets of WWF trading cards from 85-89 or some such nonsense! That was a bit of an obsession for a while... Anyhoo, Amazing Fantasy carries a pretty awesome selection for the contemporary comic fan. They pack an awful lot into that tiny space: comics, collectibles, some trading cards, and (best of all!!!) t-shirts with superhero logos on them. I found myself in a bind, needing 5 different superhero t-shirts and on VERY short notice. These guys came through and were very helpful at locating sizes and making sure I was satisfied. I ended up leaving with way more stuff than I needed because even a non-comic-fan like me found stuff of interest within these *amazing* and *fantastic* walls! The boy with the glasses who works there is an absolute sweetheart! It may not be Grandpa's comic book shops, but I'll go comic-geek for these guys any day!!! read more

Yeah I am a dork. And that is why i love this place so much. Frank, Palla, and Alexis all have their own specialties and knowledge on various genres. I admit to be a saver here so they hold all my monthly books and still keep the condition at NM...like i really give a fuck..i am not one of them CGC collectors- lame! When i just started reading again, i creeped in slow with trades, a few one-shots here and there...then Palla told me to grow some balls (okay those weren't his exact words) and jump in again..i did. Fuckin hooked again. I read all my old titles i used to grab and a few others i got turned on 2: Astonishing, All-Star titles, Batman, JLA, New Avengers, Runaways, Wolvie, Wonder-Woman, Outsiders, Ex-Machina, Amazing (tho Spidey titles suck hard right now...) and others.. The fellas don't mind if you hang out and read some and it helps that all their books are not bagged and taped for that purpose. This shop has tons of personality as you will usually hear episodes of saved by the bell or other classic sitcoms playing over their speakers. read more

I heart you! I really do! I have been coming to this place off and on for more than 10 years. Close to 13, actually...Back when this was still called Comics and Comics. I would go to the C&C over on Lombard and Columbus before they closed their doors for good. Kind of a trek to get out here from North Beach but at least they have a selection of breakfast joints for me to try out. I remember waiting for them to open so I can get my comics I have saved up. God, that was such an awful addiction I had back then. Anyways, I went back today to look around and see what I can pick up. I haven't stepped into a comic book store to buy anything in more than 5 years. That was when I went to the final C&C over on Taylor and North Point. Not sure why they even attempted to open a comic book store in Fisherman's Wharf...Baffling even to this day...So I looked around, admiring the toys they had on the top of the shelves of comics. The guy that was working there was nice. Only asked me if I needed any help after it looked like I was lost. I kindly declined and continued to admire. I also looked at the new titles they had. Marvel MAX? A more adult version? Astonishing X-men? The hell? This is why I stopped my obsession of comic books. Too many variants of the titles I used to love back when comics were comics and not a juggernaut money maker for the publishers...But, what can you do? Progress is progress. So I picked up a collected issue of Ultimate Team-ups. Every last one in one book size graphic novel. This is what I read now. I would rather buy them all in one than collect issue after issue. So I talked with the dude and I mentioned that I used to go there when it was still C&C and also said I swore I saw one of the old employees open this new place up. He said yeah, one of the ex-employees is the owner. He also went on to mention how long ago it was that the store opened. Then we got into a discussion about C&C and how they sucked ass and how they closed every location. Did you know the owner of C&C is in federal prison for bilking the elderly after the 9/11 tragedy? Something to do with insurance fraud and non-existent retinal scanners...Loser. Serves him right for fucking with a good thing. SO in closing, this place is AWESOME!!! Oh Lordy I was walking by after ordering a large margarita pizza at Pasquale's when lo and behold it be the old comic book shop from my high school days from 1982 to 1985 graduation at Irish Lincoln High Sunset District on 24th and Quintara Streets! Obviously I could order the 3 graphic novels by Clowes and Burns on Amazon for at least 20% off I bought from owner Frank since we been doing business since 82! I love this place since it one of the remaining comic book shops left in the City. read more

Wow! I've been buying comics from Frank for nearly 25 years! It was an pretty good shop when it was a Comics & Comix location, but was even better under Frank's ownership. Just recently he started displaying his very impressive collection of comic book props in the store, which add to the Super-cool feel. Amazing Fantasy carries a wide selection of books, and if it's not in stock , Frank will order for you and call to let you know when it's in. Even when I lived in Korea, Frank had no problem holding books for me for several months! Amazing Fantasy may not be flashy, but it's a good solid store that won't steer you wring. read more

Nice little unassuming comic shop. I had passed Amazing Fantasy multiple times before but I only realized it was a comic store when I was on the train with my sister going home (and it was her last day in the city, sniff). We stopped in a few minutes before closing and, after perusing through a few other comic shops (plus several book shops), we finally found the comics we were looking for: Archie! Amazing Fantasy has a wider selection of comics, although of course its main "genre" is action hero material. Still, we were more satisfied with the selection here than at Isotope. Sure, Isotope had the lounge-y feeling about it, but Amazing Fantasy got the job done in terms of a comic book store. They have a lot of back issues, so that's a plus. read more

I'm in love with Amazing Fantasy. The shopkeepers are very helpful and have pretty cool attitudes. If you have children Amazing Fantasy is very kid friendly, they recommend the right titles and have a nice selection for them also. They have a nice selection of toys NOT behind the counter so you can actually hold and look at them. The comics are organized well so its easy to find what you're looking for and they have no problem ordering anything for you if they don't carry what you want. I've been a regular for 2 years and i plan on staying one. Frank rules! read more

I like this shop, even if they made me stand outside until I was done with my coffee. Hey, they don't know if I have the physical coordination of a dolt or not... The store is bright, inviting, and has t-shirts and toys. I don't find the people working there particularly engaging, but at the same time they aren't hassling me beyond my cuppa joe. Also, they seem to actually have the comics I want, if I somehow can't get them at my regular store. When I heard about Amazing Fantasy through a friend, he described it as his "marvel pornshop". I was thinking on Irving? That can't be right. Jared D came to visit me from NY because he heard all about the Gotham City SF event. To be honest he was pretty jealous about it because he thought something like that was going to take place in NYC. Wrong! We had lunch and then came here. It was his library of comics ranging from Marvel to DC and best of all; the Justice League and Batman series. I wasn't too Marvel comics when I was growing up, but I read a fair amount of comics before the video game era took off. I just realized that there are some amazing graphic works out there by browsing around here. The guy behind the counter reminded me of a Clint Eastwood look alike but with a soft spoken voice. I gotta say this place is pretty cool since I found some old school Ninja Turtles comics here. SWEEET!!! Will definitely come back to browse around some more when I have time. :) read more

Amazing Fantasy is a great comic book shop. It's like walking into a bag of holding (shout out to all you DnDers out there). The shop is rather small but they still manage to have a great selection of the main publishers, a surprisingly decent number of indy comics, an impressive stash of back issues and TPBs, and a small smattering of toys, t-shirts, comic supplies and other random comic-related paraphenalia. The shop is clean, well-lit and right off the N Judah for easy access. There is a good selection of restaurants and coffee shops in the area so after you pick up your swag you can go and devour your pile at a nearby establishment (sounds gross, doesn't it?) if you just can't wait to confirm yet again how horribly Rob Liefield draws feet. Everyone I've met on the staff there has been friendly and helpful; I would definitely recommend swinging by to get your latest fix of Batman, Spider-man or Shanna the She-Devil. read more
