I called several contractors needing my roof replaced on short notice due to a series of bad roof leaks on an very old flat roof system and was in a rush to get the project started with the Spring rain well on its way. Shawn Whalen himself CAME TO MY HOME THE VERY NEXT MORNING after we spoke on the phone to evaluate my roof. While I had to chase other contractors down for their bids, he sent me his bid in a timely manner. Not only that, HIS BID WAS COMPETITIVE with the other 2 estimates I obtained and more importantly, HE AGREED TO PUSH BACK OTHER JOBS to accommodate our roof project... it was an emergency since our roof was actively leaking! We had to wait a week or so for the weather to warm up to start the project due to the manufacturers recommendation. Shawn really listened, because he knew my wife and I were very worried about the leaks and we had bad weather coming. So two days later he came out with one of his guys and patched our roof. That day after the patch job, we had a big rainstorm and were able to sleep through the night. It was the first time we hadn't worried about our home getting additional water damage in several weeks. We were really nervous leading up to the project because firstly, it's such a big financial commitment, and second, we didn't want to have to deal with any roof issues going forward for a really long time. The days leading up to the install, I was frequently texting Shawn with questions as well as requests for colors and materials I preferred for the re-roof. HE WAS ALWAYS QUICK TO GET BACK TO ME with answers and to confirm the changes to my order and NEVER GAVE THE IMPRESSION I WAS BOTHERING HIM. When the project got delayed a couple days due to the weather, Chuck from his office kept me updated. Big shoutout to Chuck! His project manager got sick the first day of the install so Shawn showed up to make sure everything got started without any problems. HIS CREW WAS WELL STAFFED, EFFICIENT, AND FINISHED THE JOB IN 2 DAYS. They came back on the 3rd day to do a quality check without me asking. I spoke with more than one electrical company at the time, but Robert Behers immediately impressed me as the expert I needed for the task. His explanation of alternatives and associated costs were transparent, his estimate precise, and his advice heeded. Robert's son, Bob, is equally knowledgeable. Bob can make a diagnosis over the phone when I describe a sound; and when an unusual event has occurred (such as a hiccup with ignition for a power failure that immediately follows one that lasted continuously for most of a week), he gives precise instructions over the phone to solve the issue, much like the control tower helping a passenger to land a plane after the pilot has become ill. Joe, who always has arrived on time over the past 7 years for thorough annual generator maintenance and upkeep (replacing a battery or spark plugs at specific intervals, servicing valves after prolonged use, etc.) also is a wizard and answers all questions with responses that I am able to grasp. I'll admit -- I'm somewhat picky about contractors -- but Robert's has set a new gold standard for…read morewhat a contractor can be in my mind. We recently purchased a 100 year old house with a slate roof that appeared to be on its last legs. Though at first we thought we had a few years left, we quickly discovered multiple leaks. When we started calling roofing, several said that repair was effectively impossible for a slate roof of this age (quoting an astronomical sum for a replacement), and additionally that because of the existing slate, even replacement with an asphalt shingle roof would be extraordinarily expensive. One company that only did slate roofs even looked at the job and refused to bid because the replacement was "too large for them." One of our big goals was to keep the house in touch with the aesthetic of the neighborhood -- which meant that slate or tile was really required. While they did bid a full replacement as well, Robert's suggested that a repair was also possible -- effectively writing a contract that would repair all damaged slate that they found including damaged underlayment (but not structure damage). They noted that they preferred to repair the roofs since it was overall less wasteful and can get significant extension on the roof life. They also had a decent quantity of "pittsburgh weathered" slate that was in good condition, based on other jobs they had done in the area where they had been able to salvage the slate. This reduced the difference in the appearance of the replaced slate when the job was done (though our job was large enough to need additional "new" slate as well). Their bidding process was by far the most professional we saw of any company -- they used a drone to evaluate the roof, and as we moved towards signing a detailed typed contract one of their foremen came out to evaluate the roof directly and ensure they would have enough material to complete the work (in our case, this did result in revising the contract price up slightly). Other companies literally wrote up a handwritten itemized scrawl for their 6 figure replacement cost, based on evaluation from the ground only. Along the same lines, both during the bidding process, as well as during and after the project, it was always easy to get someone knowledgeable on the phone -- regardless of if it was a question of cost or a technical question about the install or replacement. Additionally, Roberts was able to supply several addresses and photos of in progress repairs they had done. I do wish that they could have had a number of these ready to go (they should be proud of the work they do!), but it took a few days for them to supply them. That said, it was reasonably easy to see repairs they had done that looked quite natural. They also help to arrange for a subcontractor to replace dormer siding on top of our slate roof without a mark up. While the work was underway the crew was very professional. The site was impeccably clean every day after they left. They also patiently spent time with me answering questions about progress every day. During the work, they did, indeed, discover that several rafters had failed necessitating emergency structural repairs. They did the work to immediately effect the repairs and left the roof watertight all within one day. Obviously this is a highly stressful situation for a homeowner, but their crew and central office both demonstrated a zen-like level of calm and focus that was extremely comforting. To do this repair, they did need to tear some holes in the ceiling of our finished attic -- and did some additional damage inside the attic due to how the tarps were taped to the ceiling plaster, but they also connected us with a contractor they trusted who was able to repair all of the interior damage. As the work proceeded, it quickly became clear that there was significantly more damaged slate than they had originally anticipated -- all in, it was approximately half of the total roof area that needed to be replaced. However, they kept their commitment to take the burden of the cost of that overage, and we paid exactly what was quoted, plus a comparably modest sum for the unanticipated structural repairs. Since the work has finished, we've been able to rely on them for advice about other related projects on our roof, which they don't do directly (notably, questions about various tradeoffs on our gutter system that they weren't able to subcontract). Several months after the repairs, we noticed some of the underlayment in the garage appeared to have been split/damaged during the installation of the roof. With basically no questions asked, Robert's sent out a team and made the necessary repair. Though no project of this scope is without minor issues, Robert's clearly went above and beyond my expectations from a roofing company to deliver a solid repair and have demonstrated that they are committed to the happiness of their customers. I hired this company for attic mold remediation and related repairs. The written agreement clearly…read morestated that half the payment was due upfront (which I paid), and the remainder was due upon completion. There was no clause or discussion requiring additional payment before the project was finished. The company completed only part of the work and then left the rest--specifically insulation and drywall--unfinished. This left my attic without insulation during the coldest part of winter. When I followed up to have the work completed, my calls went unanswered, despite being told they would return. One day, I came home from an appointment to find the workers packing up after completing only the mold remediation portion. They had the owner on speakerphone. At that point, the owner demanded additional payment before proceeding with the remaining work. This had never been discussed and was not reflected anywhere in the written agreement. I calmly pointed that out. The owner then proceeded to yell at me for an extended period of time over terms that simply did not exist in our contract. The interaction was aggressive, unprofessional, and completely out of line. During that conversation, I even tried to de-escalate and discussed possibly separating the remaining work due to his behavior. However, I made it clear that my preference was for the job to be completed properly and with care, as originally agreed. That never happened. After that interaction, the company stopped responding altogether. I ultimately had to hire someone else to finish the job. To be fair, the employees I interacted with in person were kind and professional. However, they also did not respond to my follow-up attempts, which I can only assume was direction from the owner. If you are considering this company, make sure every detail is explicitly documented and be aware that the project may not be completed as agreed. Additionally, the owner's conduct alone should give serious pause before entering into a contract.

They put nails where they should be and caulked flashing for the other leak. This year leaked in both places again. I was told it's not under warranty! hasn't been 10 years yet. The sales gal came wrote up an estimate and gave it to us on the spot. Wife and I said ok and about a few days later she came back with lead installer too check over everything too make sure everything was going to be ok for the instal. He decided we did not need as big a but heating int or as big a ac unit as our third floor is not vented. The installers where fast and friendly and did an amazing job. We had them remove and replace our concrete porch and fix a leaky porch roof, including putting in new pillars, and replacing part of the lower part of the porch roof that had been damaged by the leak. They did paint one coating everything, and promised to come back and do a second coat, but never showed. We called and arranged for them to return, twice, and they never showed either time. After that they just never called us back. Now, two years later, the porch is leaking again, and the wood is damaged, ( the part they replaced!) so apparently not fixed either. And the paint on everything is already peeled. I wish I could attach pictures here if the mess they made, but would happily sent them to someone at Mabro, IF I could get anyone to return my call!
