My 95-year old mom was evicted from her previous facility on a Friday night before…read moreChristmas, in the dark, in the rain (just drizzle, but still wet), in the cold with nothing but the clothes on her back. Arden Court is the only place that answered the phone and they took her in without question! They warmly welcomed her (and me, too), provided her with hugs, food, and a bed with warm blankets to sleep on. From that point on, they were only more wonderful. The caregivers interacted with her with dignity and love, and took all the time they could to show her she was safe and cared for. The building is a marvel -- four wings of 16 residents each (I think its 16), color coded and decorated with themes. It has very nice outdoor areas accessible to the residents. The food looked good and seemed to be very healthy. The staff are incredible, attentive, and that includes Gina, Ashley, Emily, Brian, Deanna and Gonzalo. Dr. Cowan is there on staff (and on call all the time), and nursing staff are there 24/7. After we got in, I found out that many of my church friends' family members had been there, so I felt even better about my mom being a resident. Unfortunately, my mom's dementia progressed so rapidly that she passed within 6 weeks of arriving, but she was in the best place possible with the best, and most caring staff I've ever witnessed. My mom had been through many skilled nursing facilities over the years (for rehab after surgeries), and I've never experienced the warmth and love like I did at Arden Court. Not a single staff member walked around playing games on their phones or ignoring a call out from a resident. They also provide monthly meetings to the families of their residents, to learn more about how to best support their loved ones, and how to manage our own grief. They have a little beauty shop, and lots of activities. Best place EVER!!

The Village at Incarnate Word is a Senior Living Community located next door to UIW, but not part of UIW. The Village offers independent living, two levels of assisted living, licensed by the state of Texas, a memory care area, also state licensed and a 60 bed nursing care area, also licensed by Texas. The Village at Incarnate Word offers apartment style living options in all areas except the nursing care, which is mostly private rooms with baths, although there are a few double rooms available. A wide variety of activities are available for all residents, including concerts, plays, sporting events and the opportunity to audit classes at UIW. The staff are dedicated and the residents are friendly. My mom was in the nursing area for two years and received very good care. I would not hesitate to recommend The Village at Incarnate Word for retirement living.

Driving into the complex there is a gate guard so you have to have a specific purpose or appointment to even enter the premises. As you walk into The Mission, which is the building where my mother is, there are more security measures in place. The doors are always locked and opened by ringing reception. Then you must stop at reception and sign in electronically so you can be issued a pass. You know what there isn't!?! Adult diaper smell! Hospital smell! Old people smell!!! It is set up beautifully with separate halls dedicated to different attend to different issues. The level of care is second to none. EVERYONE is kind and pleasant. I have seen more humanity and patience here than ever before in my life. The level of dignity they treat the patients with is heartwarming. Their attention to detail is such a welcome quality... there are not enough wonderful adjectives to describe my experience with my mother here. I know there is independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and rehab here.. I think they also offer palliative and hospice care. We have recently moved to and have been independent living residents at Blue Skies of Texas East…read more(BSTE) for almost a year. BSTE is a Life Plan Community with a full continuum of care; Assisted Living, Skilled Nursing, Memory Care, Rehab Services and Hospice Care. This was a big decision that we had been researching and kicking around for several years while trying to make the best choice. After researching/visiting several differing venues (CCRCs, Del Webb, The Villages in Fl., Jimmy Buffet retirement communities, etc.) we settled on BSTE as our forever home. Blue Skies of Texas came out on top because it is both CARF certified and highly rated by Medicare. BSTE is one of only three CARF accredited Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC) in the entire state of Texas indicating a very high level certification for care with management looking for continual improvement, which has really shined throughout this unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic. Downsizing appeared challenging until we finally committed to making the move. We decided an estate sale was the best choice for us as it easily eliminated a lot of unnecessary STUFF along with charitable donations because it was time to make new memories! The staff helped make our relocation extremely easy and the move-in amenities ranged from help with unpacking to picture hanging. The interaction between the residents and the staff is an unbelievable plus as all are very caring and friendly. Our neighbors and fellow residents are also extremely friendly, caring and always willing to give a helping hand. One can be as active as desired since the social amenities here are not only envious, but much more fulfilling than our previous lifestyle. As we learned longevity is attributed to 35% genetics and 65% social life, which is indicated by many wonderful BSTE residents. We couldn't have asked for a better place to live because it's like a cruise ship on land. We highly recommend this to all seniors looking for a more fulfilling, happier, and secure lifestyle.
