Garrison Hotel, Dover NH Visiting a sibling and her family during the December 2025 holiday season, I booked a room at the Garrison Hotel & Suites Dover-Portsmouth, an Ascend Collection Hotel in the Choice group of hotels (Room: $110; Taxes and other charges: $9.93). This will be my fifth stay at the Garrison, which I have selected because of its close location to my sister's family home in Dover. The hotel has consistently proved to be a good choice. The room was clean, well-furnished, and quiet throughout my stay. The front staff members were alert, helpful, and easy to understand. There are an indoor pool and a fitness center, and a grab-and-go breakfast was offered (although I had an early departure, so I declined the offer). I'm surprised at all the bad reviews. I had the best stay at this Comfort Inn. 4 nights. The pool was clean and a great temperature. The cleaning staff so friendly and kind - especially the man with the tattoos. Reception was super friendly and helpful. She ran up a new key card for me. There seems to be an issue with the cards losing their magnetic codes, but that's pretty normal. The kitchen/breakfast attendant was above and beyond. She was so gracious when dealing with a family with a messy baby and toddler. The family did a good cleanup, but she let them feel that they weren't a burden and did the left over cleanup and seemed genuinely cool with it all. So this wasn't my baby, but you know the vibes all round make you feel good. She deserves a raise! There are long term guests living there, but I don't feel uncomfortable around working class people or poor folk, coming from that socio-economic bracket originally myself. No issue with bed bugs at all and I'm a New Yorker so I'm experienced with those buggers. Amazing staff, comfortable room, great location, inexpensive, next to Sol Yoga (95 degree y'all!), great neighborhoods for a jog, great Thai food at Thai Taste- 5 minutes drive away, clean and warm enough pool. I suggest not going to this hotel. I was at a hockey tournament with my kids they were not allowed to be on the halls together, rooms, pool. One night while we were there the parents were in the lobby and the front desk staff told us to send the kids to a room together. About 30 mins later we got a video and call from our kids showing 2 staff members at my door. One talking to them after we told them not to open the door to strangers or anybody. They used their emergency key to get into the room. My kids were getting ready to go to the pool and changing. When we got to the pool it was closed. 2 of my kids started crying. We were really disappointed. The hotel staff told us that the pool would be opening Monday. The day we left. really surprising. read more

I so wanted this hotel to work out. Three strikes and they are outta here. First, let me highlight the fact that I attempted to check-in early and was unable to check-in early. That is not the issue. I was happy to wait if need be. The issue is that others were able to check in early and I was not. I really have no idea what the difference was. To be clear, there were others like me that were also denied early check-in. I can understand if rooms were not available, but others were checking into the exact same type of room as we were. It almost seemed to be whether or not the person behind the counter liked you or not. More specifically, I did notice that all people that checked in early were women and all people that were denied early check-in were men. That is the only thing I could discern as how someone got an early check-in. Second, got our room at about 3:45PM. Walked into the room and was immediately hit with a massive smell of cigarette smoke. It was so bad that we instantly got a headache. I called down to the front desk and the woman that answered started telling us that they couldn't do anything because they were full and I would just have to accept the room. Considering that this is a non-smoking hotel and the fact that they make a big issue about it when you check-in and make you sign a $250 fee for cleaning if you smoked in the room, I think it is more than reasonable to get a different room. I especially didn't want to be stuck with the cleaning bill since I had nothing to do with the smoke. I went down to the front desk and gave them back the keys and told them to get me a another room or else. Of course they got me a new room. The final straw is that the Internet does not work. You connect and it does not direct you to the login page per the instructions. So no streaming of movies, no Internet surfing, nothing, nada, zip. Called down to the desk and left a message. Time will tell whether they will fix the Internet. read more

Zero stars, really. Came for a hockey tournament so naturally hotel was full of 10 year olds and their families. ALL of whom were looking forward to hanging in the pool between hockey games. After the first night they closed the pool for the rest of the weekend, citing a chemical inbalance issue, but it was 100% because it was loud the first night, as a group of 10 yr old girls tends to be. They wouldn't even open the breakfast seating area up so the kids could play board games after taking away the pool area. Manager nowhere to be found on a Saturday to address our concerns. The woman at front desk was beyond horrible and inhospitable. I called down and asked for extra pillows to be brought to our room, and was told to come down and get them myself. Will never stay here again and will tell any other hockey families to avoid staying here as well. read more

Stayed here for a girls hockey tournament. My daughter called me to escort her from my room to another room because the "security guard" was "creepy". Once I found out the "security guard" was wearing a camo jacket and work boots I decided to ask some questions. When asked for credentials the man said he had only worked there for one day. So he didn't have a badge. I brought this up at the front desk they could not verify who this person was but they lied and said he was hired by a 3rd party security company. When the police got there they verified that the man was one of the owners of the hotel??!!! And he's allowed to follow people around the hotel, poking his head in rooms, putting his hand on girls shoulders to stop them and question them? Weird. Creepy. Lots of cameras in the hallways. I will be reporting this very bizarre incident to corporate head quarters. Beware. read more

The rooms are spacious and clean. The bathrooms are large with lots of counter space. The property looks well maintained and clean. An indoor pool and breakfast are some of the other nice amenities. So why a 1 star review? The rudeness at check in. I travel a lot for business and stay at a lot of hotels. This check in ranks at the top in the way of rude attitude. My company books the hotel then sends credit card info and authorization by fax. When checking in I notify them as such. This lady asked for ID and credit card, I informed her she should have a fax with the information, she informed me that she needed a credit card for incidentals. I informed her that incidentals were included in the fax authorization. She told me no one does that and I will not check you in with out a credit card. I asked her to read the fax. She didn't even look for the fax and told me they didn't have any information. I told her I would have them fax over another authorization form. She then became a parrot and kept repeating throughout our conversation and ever increasing tone that she would not check us in with out a credit card. Thank goodness another desk agent stepped in. He started looking for the fax and finally found it right next to the computer keyboard that the first desk agent didn't even bother looking for. Guess what, incidentals are included in the credit card authorization. She abruptly told him you do it. ( proceed with checking us in ) I get the privilege of being able to request certain hotels. This hotel will be at the bottom of that list for this area just due to the rude attitude we received at check in. read more

Worst hotel EVER! My family wanted an easy, efficient, and stress-free stay while visiting our extended family. When we walked into the hotel, we were NOT met with smiling, helpful faces but rather a mean and rude energy. There seemed to have been "complications" with our reservations, and the problem was handled poorly, forcing my family and me to wait in the lobby for over an hour. The staff here is rude, and the smell in our rooms and hallway is DISGUSTING! I typically do not leave such unkind reviews, but this inconsiderate and unprofessional service made me step out of my character. Do better. read more

Nice hotel very helpful staff at front desk. Smell of cigarette smoke on the top floor. We had the non smoking room. But over all the hotel is nice. Very clean and nice service from the desk staff. The location of the hotel is easy to get in out of. The bed is very comfy and nice flat screen TV. The breakfast was very good. I always look forward for the breakfast that is included. The stay at this hotel was frightening. Myself, husband and 2 children felt extremely unsafe. Hotel management intimidating children,entering our room with our children unattended while changing, ordering them out of the bathroom. We had bed bugs in our beds, middle aged men wandering the hallways following our children around, and multiple drug deals, prostitutes and crime. To say "do not stay" is an understatement. It is more of a child endangerment to stay at this hotel, BEWARE. Also note. This is a section 8 residential home for many of the hotel guests. They will mix transitional stayers right in with that whole crowd, please know this is not a good mix. read more

Very disappointed. Came up from Quincy for a girls 10 year olds hockey tournament. Girls behaved very well on Friday night but hotel management could handle them having fun so they closed the pool for the rest of the weekend. No rules were broken, but management still felt they should be punished. By 9:15 there were only 6 kids left in the pool and the night was winding down. Every floor was quiet by 10:30. After 2 years of covid, this outing was very important to the kids. If you're looking for a place to stay, fund another hotel. read more

Love Comfort Inn! They are clean, offer a hearty breakfast, have guest laundry, pool, hot tub, exercise room, AND they have a nice food and drink event EVERY WEDNESDAY! On a personal note, I must say they have some of the nicest staff I've ever encountered. I had pluming issues in my home which flooded my basement and bathroom. After bouncing from expensive hotel to expensive hotel, we landed a one night deal at comfort inn. Incredibly tired and frustrated with moving so much, I asked if they could help me with the rate if I booked for the week. They worked it out and I was able to get a great rate and stay at a great place until my home got fixed. They totally didn't have to accommodate me, especially with money issues, but they did and I'm SO thankful. read more

We recently traveled here for an away game all the way from New York. Kevin, the sales director was fantastic and so helpful with booking. The rooms were great as we had a large group of 34. The staff was so friendly and helpful. The hot breakfast was perfect for our lacrosse team. They served eggs, waffles, sausage, oatmeal, toast, english muffins, and more! I stay here each year when I travel for work. The staff have always been kind and accommodating (although this year, there was an issue at check in, as apparently there weren't enough rooms cleaned for the number of reservations they had; however, it should be noted that everyone was working as quickly, politely, and respectfully as they were able in order to get everyone into a room). The rooms are decent sized, and pet friendly rooms are available. Everything appeared neat and clean, and the cleaning staff were thoughtful as they cleaned each day. Every room I've stayed in has had a mini fridge and microwave, which were incredibly useful when you're staying for more than a night or two, and especially when you're trying to eat heathy. Plenty of space to hang up clothes, an iron if you need it, and drawers. There is a fitness center, but it is extremely small and limited (a treadmill, elliptical, bike, and weight machine), so it can be hard to get in during before and after work hours. The last day of my last stay, someone told me the hotel offered passes to a local gym, but there was nothing in the room or website that had this information. There is an indoor pool, and a hot tub (alas, this was out of service on my last visit). The continental breakfast is typical hotel fare: make your own waffles, eggs, sausage, cereal, yogurt, oatmeal, and fruit. Nothing bad, but nothing outstanding, either. Decent prices, hard workers, and a comfy bed. Made being away from home much easier. read more

Hotel was fine, but we cut our intended stay short because of the wi-fi. I don't mind "logging in", although it is an annoyance, but every time we got back to the room, we couldn't log in because there "weren't enough leases". Each time, we called the desk and they had us call the provider who manually "cleaned up" the leases so we could get on. What we didn't need after a long day was going through this each time. read more

The worse service I ever had at a hotel. Never came to clean room. Didn't give us new towels unless you called desk for them Didn't pick up dirty towels or empty trash in your room. Gym never had towels. Free breakfast always ran out of food and coffee then had to wait for them to bring more. Food was always cold. Never made the bed. Horrible experience. read more

Reserved a non-smoking room through Hotwire and showed up to a smoking room at a sold-out hotel. I get that, although I don't like it when hotels treat you like a second class citizen for buying the rooms they offer through third party vendors. Anyway, the problem was the smoking room was unbearably smelly, smoke with perfume deodorizer on top of it. The front staff was friendly and put an ozone machine in but it did nothing. It was really gross, the worst smelling hotel room I have ever had. I considered moving hotels but stayed in the end. If you're not a smoker, be absolutely sure you get a non-smoking room. read more

Staff was friendly.The room was spacious. But the floor we were on, reeked of cigarette smoke. I am a smoker, but don't smoke inside and the smell even bothered me. The floor by the window where the ac is was soaked. Coffee pot was not cleaned from the last guest. Insulation between rooms was lacking, could hear the person in the next room urinating in their bathroom. The alarm for the elevator goes off all night. read more

Saturday night (Feb 18) there was no hot water; apparently a boiler malfunctioned. While things do happen, there was nothing done on the part of the front desk to accommodate guests other than an offer to transfer to another hotel (approx 10:30 pm). The room was old and tired..burn marks on the carpet...and a general shop worn outdated feel to the place...The parking lot and grass area was covered in dog feces...All in all, a particularly undistinguished hotel read more

Clean, decent hotel - construction going on in lower hallway to redo the floors. Room is a 2 queen suite and the room is clean, and suits our needs. Bed isn't the most comfortable (sheets are stiff, not soft) but otherwise room is fine with plenty of space. Free breakfast is nice, with standard choices of make your own waffles, eggs, sausage, yogurt, muffins/bagels, and coffee, hot water for tea, and juice. Couldn't figure out way to get on wifi but didn't try hard either. read more

Our wedding this past July was during a particularly tourist-heavy weekend in the area. We were so relieved to get a wedding block with the Comfort Inn in Dover. They were easy to work with, very friendly, and provided clean and pleasant lodging for our many guests traveling from out of state. On the day of our wedding, the staff left a card, bottle of champagne, and jar of chocolates for my husband and I in our room, which was really sweet. Many of our guests also mentioned how much they enjoyed their stay and how friendly the staff was. Highly recommend the Comfort Inn in Dover, NH! read more

Refused to honor a coupon for like $20 off the room because the hotel was at 80% or greater capacity. Coupon was really the only reason this hotel was selected. Hotel overall was not very clean and bed skirt in room stained. Walls were thin and you could hear everything in adjacent rooms and in the hallway and the curtains over the window did not close all the way. The pool area was well maintained. I will without question look for another place to stay next time! read more

I give it a one because negative 50 is not an option. We booked a block of over 30 rooms as my daughter was getting married near by. This was one of the very few options. The price was very high for Dover. Some of our guest were told that they required a two night stay, which was untrue with our block. When my wife and I showed up for the wedding (we are the parents of the bride) we were told they didn't have a room for us the second night and they were completely booked. When told we booked through Priceline I was instructed by there Sales Manager that having a confirmation number from Priceline or any other 3rd party didn't mean that you actually got a room - WHAT? A few guest, even those who booked direct, didn't have a room. My guest who showed up at 3 were told they could not get into their rooms, some until almost 6 pm. Most of the staff was incredible rude (hi Kevin) but one that was trying to help (Daffnie). After about the 5th major problem I asked to talk to the GM (who I talked to the day before) and was told she was away with her family and could no be distributed (yeah I was away with my family too - at a wedding you were potentially ruining), the Assistant GM was on her off day and also couldn't be bothered. They had a water main break the place was all torn apart, and no sings that they were fixing it. Some rooms smelled and were dirty. Sleep in your car first before booking here. read more
