I had a week to find care for my father, which the other companies I interviewed either needed minimum 2 weeks notice or we just didn't jive. But with ascent home care, they were ready, willing and accommodating! The process with my dad was overwhelming and on his discharge date I couldn't be there. Ascent took the reigns and kept me updated with everything from the time they arrived at rehab to when they were on their way to my dads to when they arrived home. Hey made the process easy. The care workers were amazing and patient with my father and kept me updated with everything going on wth him and supplies he needed. I NEVER had to worry about my dad's care or his safety.I highly recommend this company to anyone who is searching for care for a family member or loved one

The Dr's gave him 7-10 days to live. He lived for more than 2 months with excellent care from Ascent. Our caretaker, Ariel, was an amazing angel that gave my dear Father-In-Law respect, comfort and friendship. He bathed and fed him and gave him massages. He fit right in with our family. He made a very sad time in our lives bearable and actually enjoyable at times. The owners of Ascent have huge hearts too and are hands on. I highly recommend them for home health care.

They eventually sent one provider we loved, but we complained too much about the others, hoping to get another as qualified as her, so they FIRED us! It would have cost $24,000 to buy out the contract of the one provider we liked!!

She had advanced Alzheimer's but she was still a sweetheart and could engage in meaningful conversation. She seemed to benefit from consistent companionship, which is why I hired caregivers. She ate better when there was someone there to sit with her for 1 or 2 meals per day, watch TV with her, wheel her around the facility in her wheelchair, play games or do simple jigsaw puzzles, help her read the paper, etc.. Brightstar was paid a lot of money. The primary Brightstar contact would continually agree to things which she did not deliver. For example, I explicitly and in writing asked for a basic team of 2-3 caregivers who would visit my aunt regularly. The contact agreed, yet over the first several months of service, there was a parade of different caregivers through my aunt's room. Some of them lasted only 1 visit, others lasted several visits. It was a real joke. However, I like to give people a chance and I understand how difficult this industry can be, so I tried to work with Brightstar. In hindsight, I should have left them right away. Whenever I would have a complaint, the primary contact would assure me that she would work it out, even though she rarely did. Then finally Brightstar came up with a consistent, primary caregiver. However, it turned out that she was cheating on the hours worked and had been doing so for FIVE MONTHS! I was the one who discovered the fraud. Brightstar did not maintain adequate controls in order to detect the fraud. I, as a customer, had to detect that fraud. The actions of the caregiver constituted financial abuse of the elderly, which is a crime in Illinois. However, Brightstar would not press charges against the caregiver, so the Wheaton Police Department (Officer KW) dropped the case. To their (partial) credit, Brightstar refunded my aunt's money (or at least the amount THEY calculated had been stolen from her, which I believe was low). In reviewing the records, I learned that the caregiver had been cheating on her hours reported FROM THE VERY FIRST DAY SHE SERVED MY AUNT! That comfort with lying suggests to me that she may have been cheating other clients in the past. There are some caregiver firms that are "body shops," where they parade a bunch of people through their clients' homes without fulfilling a fiduciary duty to tend to the welfare of their dependent clients. The behavior that this Brightstar franchise exhibited suggests that their business model falls into this category, unfortunately. Shortly before I discovered the fraud, I encountered the caregiver in question in my aunt's room. She was coughing and sneezing with a cold, yet she showed up at work anyway. Within a few days, my aunt came down with pneumonia and died an awful death (pneumonia is NOT the way you want to go, I was there!), drawn out over the next two weeks. My experience with this Brightstar franchise has added to my own fears of aging. How does on protect oneself from similar degradation and abuse?

We had gone through a lot with my dad before he passed away and so we knew what we wanted and what we didn't. Unfortunately, the informal network we used for my dad didn't have women caregivers so we were back to to square one. After doing a lot of research with the local senior center and online we called For Papa's Sake, which is based out of the town next to where my mom lives. From the very first phone call I suspected we had gotten lucky. After a couple of calls and some group discussion between me, my mom and a For Papa's Sake senior person we decided we'd try them out. And am I glad we did. They listened to my mom's and my requests, likes, dislikes, deal-breakers etc. and they never batted an eye. They did say it might take a bit longer than usual (given our needs) to find the right care giver, but they called back in less than 5 days and we had a care giver within 10 days to 2 weeks of that 1st main discussion. That care giver has worked out so well. It has really improved our lives and I can go days without worrying about my mom...what a relief. That's what For Papa's Sake provides: relief! If you are looking for an alternative to a nursing home or aged care facility or whatever you want to call it, For Papa's Sake really cares and I would encourage you to give them a call. They have worked out great for us and I would not recommend them for something so important if they weren't doing a great job.

This review is mainly for Diana M. of HRS…read more After my dad spent a week in the hospital, he was prescribed home health care. This was my first experience with home health care; my parents had worked with other firms before, but with my mom in another hospital, I went with the attending physician's advice and engaged HRS. Home health care assigns a team of professionals to the patient and caregiver to assess their needs. We were assigned a social worker, Tom, an OT, PT and nurse, Diana. The nurse does the initial intake and assessment, the OT determines whether there's a need for future visits and assesses the safety of the home. In our case, she suggested modifications (taking up rugs, etc.) and ordered some equipment. I really appreciated this part of the process since my dad was frail and living on his own for the better part of 3 months. The PTs worked more with my mom helping her build strength and mobility; getting her from a walker, to a rollator, to walking on her own. They attempted to improve my dad's mobility and alleviate some of his osteoarthritis pain. The social worker checked in mainly via phone to see how things were going and, for my mom, came out to do an eval. Diana, our nurse, was at our house weekly. She checked my dad's vitals and well-being to help ensure we could keep him from being re-admitted to the hospital. For my mom, she helped with wound care, ordered medical supplies and ensured her level of care was adequate. She always kept me in the loop and alerted me when there were concerns. My dad was very easygoing, so I'm sure Diana's job was probably pretty easy at least until my mom became her patient. By the time my mom was discharged from the hospital, Diana was a veteran member of our care team. The best words I can use to describe my mom's demeanor during her first months out of the hospital are: intense, impatient, and uncooperative. In case it wasn't clear, home health is not private nursing, nurses go from patient to patient, so it's rare they'll be there like clockwork. At times, my mom would call Diana and their office incessantly; no matter how much she screamed and ranted, they were always professional even when they had to call me for an assist. I worried Diana would hit her limit, but she put up with my mom like a champ, eventually finding a way to connect with her. I never envisioned having two critically ill parents at the same, I don't know how we would've gotten by without the help of places like HRS.

Some of the patients HRS gets are oftentimes not used to being cared for by CNAs who are minorities. I've experienced racism working at HRS and I've even had patients to lie on me for stuff I didn't do. Some of the work assignments aren't that great and staffing will keep under wraps a patient's true colors. HRS tend to deal with a lot of high end clients who are super picky. Which makes working impossible because you're forced to take other jobs to make up for hours lost because there's not enough work coming through. They also expect you to drive to really far for some work assignments. I voluntarily resigned in early 2019 because I haven't been working in three months as a result of not having any available patients. Pay was decent but if you're working with high end patients they can afford to pay their CNAs a living wage.
