Boy, how to write a review about an auto repair shop that won't bore people to tears... tough job…read more Well, the owner of this garage has a tougher job than I, so I can at least try. If you're looking for garage that's not some chop shop in some sketchy part of Washington DC... If you're looking not to get ripped off by some overpriced Exxon-like franchise that could care less what you THINK is wrong, much less what may actually BE wrong with your car... If you're looking someplace that's a safe walking distance to the Metro... If you just want decent mechanic... ...do yourself a favor, print the map on the right-hand side and drop off your car there. I have never met a harder working car mechanic as honest as the owner of this shop, ever. Having been driving and wrecking cars for over 15 years in Washington DC, trust me, I've gone through more than a few. Anyone new in town, I always recommend this guy. New luxury car or every day, doesn't matter, he'll take care of you. Case in point: I rarely drive, when I do, I shamefully drive my old 1995 Toyota Corolla (yes garage kept mind you). I live nearly downtown DC, I have next to ZERO reason for using it except when I visit clients in VA or MD. What do I need a new a car for when this one workhorse works fine, right? Well it's old, and most old things need some help time to time. Over ten years old, DC city driving and the way I treat it, it's going to break for sure. Sure enough, it did, my transmission had to come out. Plus, I already knew I had a problem with the alternator (high whining sound, not good) and my clutch was definitely getting ridiculous hard to push and get any acceleration... in other words a mess. PLUS, it came at the worse time. I took it his shop, and then I got an expected emergency and I had to leave out of town. I was gone for two and half weeks, car at his place. So here's my bill, you decide: Parts 1 used, refurbished transmission $650 1 clutch repair kit $239.50 1 rear motor mount $38.95 2 Axle Shaft seal $24.72 1 engine rear seal $27.47 1 alternator $185.90 3 gear oil $29.95 1 alternator belt $21.00 Total Parts $1,218.49 Labor Replaced used transmission Replaced new clutch kit Replaced rear motor mount Replaced engine rear oil seal Replaced axel shaft seals Replaced alternator Replaced alternator belt Total Labor $800 + no extra storage fees and he kept parking inside his garage every night (I know because my brother drove by the shop to check it out himself). My car is working great. It's never any fun to drop $2k on anything, but I got my money's worth, just ask around town what the going rates for a transmission replacement job is these days... then ask how much for everything else he took care of. If someone knows a better deal, do let me know but I can't imagine finding someone that can beat that. This guy rules and I just realized I don't even know the man's name. Sheesh. OK, I think that's good enough for a review right? Yeah, I think so too. :)

The repair itself looks great, and I appreciate that they took the time to make sure everything was done right instead of rushing it out the door. What stood out the most, though, was how they treated me. They worked with me when it came to the financial side of things and the storage situation, which took a lot of stress off my shoulders. That kind of understanding goes a long way, especially when dealing with insurance, repairs, and everything else that comes with an accident. Overall, I felt like they genuinely cared about helping me, not just fixing my car. If I ever need body work again (hopefully not anytime soon ), I wouldn't hesitate to come back or recommend them to someone else. It pains me to write this review as I have been a very VERY loyal customer to Dr Auto Repair for…read moremany years. Today, however, crossed a line for me and I am compelled to leave this feedback for others. I took my vehicle in for brake work and in usual fashion, the shop turned around the repairs quickly. My issue was with my pick up today and what transpired thereafter (resulting in being awoken from a nap to banging on my door by shop workers). Context and back story here is I am in the IT industry and had a late night software deployment last night. I dropped my kids off this morning at day care (my wife has been out of town at this point on travel for a few weeks, so i am extra tired) and then made my way via uber over to the shop to pick up my vehicle. Upon arriving (I was paying by cash), I told the shop who i was, what vehicle i was picking up - and was told the bill was already taken care of, and that I was all set and good to go. Now here's the key detail - My truck which was serviced was boxed in, thus in order for me to get it out in the first place, another vehicle had to be moved by the shop (not by me), which they did. As I was driving home, I had a call for something pertaining to my software release from the earlier morning come up, and during that call missed a call from the shop. Upon returning home I took a nap since I had a late night of work + exhaustion from the kids. I was awoken not too long after by banging on my door (not just once, multiple times; which awoke me from an upstairs room). When I went to open my door I was confronted by shop workers, and told that I left without paying (and the way they were grilling me; on purpose). I told them I was told the bill was taken care of and good to go. I went through the details of everything that happened, and realized that there was a mix up where it was thought I was a different customer (which is fine, mistakes happen). I gladly paid immediately after there was a clarification. However, I was very very put off by the shop's tactics and intent to portray this as if I knowingly and intentionally did something wrong here. Even after explaining what happened, one of the two of the workers that came out continued to bash me as if I maliciously did this. The kicker about all of this. The work for my vehicle had not been fully completed at the time of pick up. I called back to speak with Mr. Al (who is very nice) and explained what happened and he agreed there was a misunderstanding. It was then called out to me that I needed to bring the vehicle back to complete the remaining work. I never received a receipt for the transaction, and was never apologized to by the workers that came out to gang up over the misunderstanding. I am big on loyalty and customer satisfaction, and this entire experience has soured me to this shop and/or recommending it to others in the future. All it would have taken is giving a listen with an open ear, vs assuming that I somehow moved the vehicles boxing the vehicle in myself in order to somehow move the vehicle without visiting the office for payment and get the key (which i did), then being told I was all set and good to go. I want to stress Mr. Al is a very nice man and apologized on behalf of the workers that came out, however this experience has left me upset all day given the assumption that I had ill intent after being a loyal returning customer for all of these years. UPDATE: I should add, the shop has done work for free on my vehicles before, and Vincent said the mechanic noticed something and fixed it, so 'happy birthday'. According to them I should have probably asked then who paid for that too (and you can see how I would think things were set if told the bill was taken care of). In this instance my vehicle was released to me after I told them the specific make/model (not that i was picking up a pickup truck) - The other pickup truck was completely different make/model. The accusatory nature when coming to my home and banging on my door was borderline harassment and my reaction to the entire situation would have been different if it was approached more neutral as "Hey, there was a misunderstanding we got the vehicles confused despite telling you it was paid for", not "YOU DIDN'T PAY, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU". I started going to this shop during the pandemic SEEKING out ways to support black businesses. Never in a million years would I have thought the business would treat me as if I am a criminal after having been a loyal customer for many years prior to this incident and never once having any issue or experience like this. I have had 2 vehicles services here well over 10 times in total or more - yet am treated like this..
