    My 11-year-old Black Lab was attacked by another dog, leaving her with a couple of puncture wounds on her head and a lacerated ear. The team at Columbia River Veterinary Specialists handled the situation with professionalism, courtesy, and clear communication. From arrival to departure, I was in and out within an hour.

    We took our lab dog there in March because she was lethargic, wouldn't eat, depressed, withdrawn. They ran a bunch of tests immediately, X ray and ultrasound. Advised us to leave her there overnight to see if something passed in her stomach (a piece of bagel from the day before) because she may have swallowed something or also she may have a suspicious mass by her bum. They ran additional ultrasounds and X rays the next morning, and magically The piece from Her stomach Disappeared. No disgnosis, no explanation, They sent her home with a bundle of meds, 4500.00 later and she was worse than when we took her in. When she came home, she was horribly sick, breathing fast, not eating, lethargic, so sick. she looked horrible, so we brought her into our regular vet 3 hours after, which was in Portland. Within an hour, they figured out exactly what it was, which was salmon poisoning, a test that they ran on her immediately when she arrived. Because of her symptoms, they did a fecal test on her and told us immediately what was wrong. Columbia river vet did not do a fecal AT ALL EVER (they had 24 Hours to do This!) on her but instead risked her life and ran fancy tests. DO NOT EVER TAKE YOUR ANIMAL THERE. THEY JUST WANT TO RUN YOUR BILL UP AND DONT FOCUS ON DOING WHATS BEST FOR YOUR ANIMAL. We've learned a lot. Dogs in the NW by rivers are exposed to salamanders, fish, that bacteria is toxic so it's toxic to dogs- it should have been the first question they ask living where we do. Our vet asked us right away about the potential and ran a test. CRVS NEVER cared about our dogs life. This illness is 70% fatal if not treated within 10 days. Our sweet girl almost lost her life and it would have been at the hands of this awful place. I didn't trust my gut and my gut was telling me They were a money grubbing vet, confirmed my our vet 3 hours after getting her. Don't give this place a thought, go elsewhere. They aren't in it for the animals, but for the money.

    Last Wednesday night at about 10:30pm I brought my 10 year old German Shepherd in. The girl working the front desk was rude. Two assistants or techs came out, realized it was emergent and took my dog for x-rays. About 10 minutes later the vet came in. She was kind, explained what was going on and that there was really only one option. I was told Kira had been given some pain medication and I would be taken to her. A few minutes later the girl from the front desk came in with paperwork showing all of the creamation choices. She then told me she would take my credit card. I told her I hadn't been given a bill yet and didn't feel comfortable just handing over my card. After another 10 minutes or so I went and asked to be taken to my dog. I have never been separated from my any of animals at a vet other than a few minutes while they draw blood or take x-rays. The girl at the front desk told me it was hectic in back and they were busy taking care of other animals. I did not ask her to do anything other than bring me to my dog. It was almost an hour before I was taken to her. It breaks my heart knowing she was in a strange place, in pain and alone simply beacause no one could take 2 minutes and bring me to her. I said goodbye to Kira that night. Kira deserved the comfort of being with me until it was time to let her go. She didn't deserve to be left in some room alone for almost an hour. Do better!

    Foreign body that was pulled out by my dogs vet after being told twice he was okay by Columbia River Vet.

    I have brought my dog in for 2 different situations and I have not been impressed either time. For both scenarios we brought our dog in 2 nights in a row, just to be told that his vitals are fine and send us home. The first time, my dog ended up having a severe lung infection (pneumonia) and had to be hospitalized for 3 nights and be on medications for 6 months. Columbia River Vet saw my dog two times prior to his hospitalization for this and did not do any diagnostic tests because his vitals were fine, even though I explained to them what symptoms he was having and that he was not acting normal. He was having breathing issues and throwing up blood and they still did not take me seriously. It was a hopeless feeling being sent home twice knowing he wasn't okay. By the time his normal vet could see him we explained the ER told us he was fine, but the infection worsened at that point and our dog almost didn't make it, but luckily Pacific NW ER & Pet Specialities took us seriously and helped him. The second and most recent time I brought my dog into Columbia River, he was having gulping/swallowing/licking fits. He was having somewhat labored breathing and snorting a lot, he just wasn't acting himself. I spent a combined 9 hours waiting over the 2 times I brought him in this last time, just for the doctor to see him for maybe 15-20 mins each and telling us his vitals and physical exam seem fine and he can go home. I knew that he wasn't fine, so I was able to get him into the urgent care at his normal vet the next day (East Padden Animal Hospital). They took his symptoms seriously and immediately started running tests. Xrays were done and nothing stood out like crazy so they partially sedated him and went into his throat. They pulled an insane amount of sting and grass out of his throat/ esophagus!!! It seems unless your animal is coding or in absolute distress, this ER does not take you seriously. Both times my dog's vitals may have been stable, but he was dealing with very life threatening issues. If you have a pet in need of emergency vet care, I would 100% suggest you don't waste your time/money here. Time is precious when it comes to our animals being sick, seriously don't waste it here.

    Our 10 year old rescue Chihuahua, Betsy, started having 2-3 seizures per month since November, just out of the blue. Our primary vet told us we could start her on a seizure medication but if she was only having a couple of minor seizures a month, we may want to hold off. All her labs and exams were good. Fast forward to 12 Feb, Betsy had a grand Mal seizure early in the morning and continuous smaller seizures that just wouldn't stop. We brought her to CRVS and with the exception of the initial Tech that came to the waiting room to speak to us and didn't listen when we told her we never did start Betsy on the seizure meds. She felt like she needed to chastise us, while our dog was seizing, for stopping the meds (which were never started). We complained immediately and fortunately, never saw her again during our visit. The front desk staff was wonderful and caring as was Dr. Garrison. After his exam, it was determined that the cause was most likely a brain tumor that had finally gotten large enough to become symptomatic. He was so kind and empathetic. The decision was made to euthanize her and end her suffering. It was done with respect and she went with dignity while she held her in our arms and said goodbye. The staff is very caring and respectful. It was greatly appreciated on such an awful day in our lives.

    I don't mess with Yelp too often, but when I saw the negative reviews here I had to leave one of my own. My sweet good boy Blue was just treated my Dr Walton. He was truly fantastic, and he quite literally saved my dogs life. Blue presented with sneezing, lethargy and partial anorexia. We took him to our regular vet in White Salmon bc that's where we live. They wanted to do a nasal flush, suspecting something was stuck in there, but suggested we might see a specialist first. They were very happy to do it, though. Thinking the flush could be a waste of money if it didn't solve the issue, we decided to see the specialist. We called all around and Columbia River could get us in the soonest, without astronomical pricing. Dr Walton saw Blue literally the next day, and advised we do a CT scan. He just about insisted upon it. When we got the estimate, it definitely took us aback for a second. But it is what it is, and thank goodness for pet insurance. So, we did the CT scan and it turned out that Blue had a massive tumor in his nose that had entered his brain. If we had gone through with the nasal flush, it would have instantly killed him. Dr Walton was shocked by the size of it, because Blue's symptoms didn't lead toward anything to do with the brain. His bed side manor was truly excellent. He spoke eloquently and decisively to both myself and my husband, and consulted with both of us separately over the phone and in person as we couldn't both be present. The time he spent with us was significant and deeply informative. We felt his care and concern, and Blue responded to him so well too--dogs know good people. He's presently advocating for us to get a referral to a top oncologist, with great consideration and understanding of cost concerns. Is it cheap? No, the sort of treatment you go to see a specialist for is not going to be cheap. If it is, you probably don't want to be there. Did we wait a while to get Blue back? Yeah, it's an emergency hospital. I'm sure they had more pressing emergencies that made their estimated time take longer. That's not anything anyone can help, and I would only hope that it I brought my dog in bleeding to death they would prioritize him over a CT scan. Also, the front desk and tech staff is just lovely. They're the sweetest people. They gave my daughter a little squishy and thanked her for being patient, how wonderful is that? Blue did not get the diagnosis that we were hoping for, and treatment for him may not even be possible. Vets can't change untreatable cancer, it would be absurd to fault them for that. It is what it is, and they did the absolute best and most that they could do. If you had a lousy experience, consider it may have been out of their hands. And please please please get pet insurance. Thank you, Dr Walton and staff. Blue is home resting nicely now.

    A Rollercoaster Experience at Hearthwood Veterinary Hospital: Good to BAD to LOL…read more Strap in, folks, because this ride at Hearthwood Veterinary Hospital is all about highs and lows, with a heavy dose of mystery. My debut was good Dr. Dena Baumgartner, (picture shown on their website below), savvy vet tech (picture not shown), and the vibe that my furball and my wallet were in good hands. But hold onto your hats, because round two veers into the twilight zone. The plot thickens with their photo policy - so cloaked in mystery it could star in its own detective novel. I wanted to document my pet's first happy vet visit. If Hearthwood was a book, it'd be titled 'Why We Hide.' Auditing seems overdue, doesn't it? Then there's the 'VIP (Very Isolated Pets)' treatment - pets and owners parting ways for procedures, waving more red flags than a matador. Me and my sidekick? We don't play that game. We took our paws elsewhere after a peek behind the curtain revealed too many unanswered questions. They wanted to separate me from my pet for a simple booster shot. I thought that was odd since we were already in a private room and they were holding the shot in their hand. Wouldn't you think that was odd? Don't even get me started on time - or the lack thereof. This tech (see picture below) is 45 minutes late for the appointment. As you can see, she is less 'fashionably late.' It's not just about the wait; it's the principle. Most people count that as a "no show" at 20 minutes? Where do you draw the line? 15, 30 min? If it was the other way around they would easily charge me a "no show" fee. They also charged me wellness exam fee of some $60 which I did not authorize nor was I advised that a exam was being conducted. Bottom line: If you're shopping for a vet where secrets don't shadow simple check-ups and respect for your time is a given, let my story be your compass. It's time to vote with our feet, because the path to change is paved with our choices. In America, we vote with our dollar. And people like this business need to respect that. I hope people who read this review note that I was not offered an apology or a refund. Transparency, accountability, and punctuality aren't just nice-to-haves; they're must-haves.     The short version: they saved our dog…read more First off the thing to understand about this place is it's essentially 1 large open area so as a pet parent you see EVERYTHING. While they do have rooms for families to be in private or for waiting with a reactive animal you are in an open main area with other families and see the staff interacting with patients, parents and each other. IMO this makes the medicine they practice better because of the accountability. They have a small snack area with tea and coffee, especially good if you are there much longer than you anticipated. Since I brought our dog alone (my husband stayed home with our son) the front desk staff gladly watch our pup when I needed to use the restroom. Being an open concept you can't help but overhear the phone calls taken by the staff from concerned pet parents. An item of note was call after call taken from concerned pet parents calling because their animal had ingested *insert food of concern*. Instead of telling people to come in without knowing if it was a true concern the staff and doctors asked numerous questions about the animal and food ingested to confirm if it was necessary for their animal to be brought in. I got the sense that they wanted to prevent someone from coming in needlessly, not only saving that person's finances but enabling them to focus on the ones that truly needed help. Keeping in mind this is an emergency clinic it's expected for there to be a premium with costs but what I observed was a staff that did what they could to provide care to their patients as effectively as possible. In one case a pair of rabbits were brought in that were sent home without charge. They were found to not actually be having an emergency but just needed to be given the correct amount of medication (the wife gave the husband the 'I told you so' look lol). Our Veg story: We brought our 9 month old puppy to VEG on Christmas day with a suspected intestinal blockage. My husband had called ahead so they were expecting us. After Cera's initial intake they provided an initial estimate which they were happy to scale back (we declined initial labs in favor of just getting x-rays to confirm the suspected blockage). They proposed a round of meds and fluids to see if the mass would have any movement and sent us home with instructions to return later that evening for a 2nd round of xrays. I took Cera home so we could have Christmas dinner with our family and brought her back after her kid went to bed. Unfortunately the 2nd x-rays confirmed the mass had not budged and surgical intervention was needed to save her life. When discussing Cera the doctor asked me questions about our family, I shared that Cera's kid, my 10 year old son, has autism and Cera was very important to him. She asked about their relationship and said it would be good to bring him to see her in the morning. They got Cera comfortable and they enabled me to stay with her until they were ready to start her surgery. I went home to get some sleep and the doctor called me a few hours later to report the surgery was successful. Later that morning I brought my son to see her. I had heard the doctor tell the staff about my son before her surgery and the staff were so kind and accommodating with my son, assuring him they would help her to come home as soon as she was able. We went home for dinner and later after I got him to bed I went back, prepared to spent a 2nd night there. Upon my arrival the doctor said that pending a good next few hours I should be able to take her home before morning. Keeping in mind our bill was more than I care to admit or thought I'd ever spending on vet care getting her home was not only good for her but meant we would have to be charged for a 2nd night's stay. Just after 1am I drove home with our sweet Cera and had a very happy son in the morning when he came downstairs to find us home. Our family is so grateful. Cera is doing great & expected to make a full recovery.

Too many times we have gone to a Vet emergency clinic, our dog taken away, and we sit in a room wondering what's going on and panicking about where our dog is, is she scared, not getting updates, not understanding anything. Our dogs are always terrified to go in, they HATE being taken away from us, and we hate it. That is NOT the case here. When they say open concept - they mean OPEN. You are seated in an area, WITH your pet. The doctor and nurses come to where you're sitting, they sit on the floor with you. You're sitting next to other patients and their people, sitting on other couches near you. You're seeing them x-ray, do labs, triage, etc. on every single pet that comes in the door. You see all the chaos going on in a Vet ER as they do their passdowns and triage. It all becomes visible, and we left there understanding two things: 1) veterinarian emergency is chaos. There's always something. There's always pets in need. And there's always people wondering what's going on and just as scared as their pets. 2) Being able to SEE that first hand, helped us understand, empathize, but also bond with other pets and their owners - as we all sat together, talked while we waited, and created a sense of community in during that time when stress is at it's highest, with our furry family members.

After doing extensive research, we chose Dr. Casey at this hospital and it was absolutely the right decision. Our experience has been exceptional. We've been coming in for routine bloodwork and ongoing testing, and every visit has been seamless. The staff especially our vet tech Danielle are all consistently kind, professional, and attentive. Pricing is fair and transparent, which I truly appreciate. Most importantly, my cat is doing significantly better under their care!! They are also an emergency hospital, which gives me tremendous peace of mind. If we ever face an urgent situation, it's incredibly reassuring to know that her specialty care and emergency services are all under one roof. And as a thoughtful bonus their coffee machine makes an assortment of brewed coffee, which is a lovely touch during what can otherwise be stressful appointments.

We had to rush to Blue Pearl and get him treated immediately. While this type of care is expensive, the expertise of the doctors and staff at Blue Pearl is invaluable. They are an important resource for our community and I rest easier knowing they are nearby in case of any pet emergency. When I came in door crying, carrying my pet and covered in blood, the staff compassionately cared for both of us. They offered me a pair of scrub pants to change into and even parked my car that I had left idling in the parking lot when I rushed in. I appreciate the small touches like the coffee machine in the lobby and the Bob Ross channel on the TV, it shows that they are empathetic to how much stress pet owners experience in these situations. My dog received expert care from the surgical team and he's now recovering nicely. Thank you to Blue Pearl!

When that is no longer the case and tough decisions need to be made, we had an excellent experience with Compassionate Care to say goodbye to our pup. Let me start by saying that every administrative and customer service interaction was timely, clear, and concise. The last thing you want in this situation are delays and confusion. Once I reached out through the contact link on their website, the email response with details about their different services happened within 10 minutes. An intake call to make arrangements for a euthanasia visit at our home was answered by a human and only took a few minutes. They recommend making a reservation 48-hours in advance, but we were put on a wait-list and we moved up our reservation when things opened up. I appreciate that you can reschedule (with four hours advance notice) as well. They have a variety of services, Eco-friendly cremation, and memorial pieces. Everything was arranged in advance, including payment through their web portal, so when the vet arrived for the appointment it was all about our boy and his (and our) comfort. Dr. Wilson clearly walked us through the process, gave us time to say goodbye, provided options, and was a wonderful partner in the process. Cremation is done at a facility in N. Portland, but they have the option of picking up the cremains in Oregon City which was more convenient for us. Having gone through this experience with another pet where we took them to the vet's office, I would highly recommend this option for the pet's comfort. It just felt better saying goodbye in a familiar space surrounded by love.

    My experience was okay…read more I made a most difficult decision to let my beloved cat go after a long weekend spent almost entirely in ER trying to figure out why he would no longer eat and why his eye was swelling shut. And an even longer two or three weeks before that fighting to get him to eat. Like others here, Kevin was closer to me than my human family. I was busy with the doctors in ER so my partner called in to make the appointment to ease my stress. He said I was primary contact, but it was difficult to make that clear all the way until the day so communications were continually going to him. Not a big deal in the overall picture, but it didn't make the experience any easier. This was my cat for 8 years before I met my partner and while he loved my baby, I was the one with the lifelong bond. The doctor showed up within the time window allotted. We both found her a little cold. I felt like we were just a job and everything was done by number. My BF picked up my cat and carried him to me, but the doctor said we should do paperwork first which resulted in me putting him down after building up to do what I deemed impossible. I was emotional and crying. This really should somehow be handled before the visit. There were corrections to be made on the form. I was about to lose my baby and this only made me aware that I was filling out his death warrant. I am utterly heartbroken. I know holding your baby until the last minute is catharsis and closure, but I found it traumatizing. His passing was peaceful at least. I liked that there were different sizes for different dogs all with lots of space to walk around in. There was also easy access for them to head out to the grassy area. It was clean & everyone was really nice. We went home & booked them. Our dog does still eat 3 times/day, so we did have to add on that extra feeding service. Our dogs stay was just a few days. I like how they have separate doors where you can pick up our dog, so its separate from people coming to drop theirs off. But also, our dog gets excited & pees (which she did that day), so it's nice that the pick up is outside & we didn't have to clean up a puddle indoors. Their pricing is comparable to a lot of the other ones & they also have a military discount which was nice. I'm sure we'll be using them again the next time we go out of town.

    This was the first time I've ever boarded all 3 of my pups (besides once at a facility i used to…read morework at so I was completely familiar with the staff and protocols), so to board them at an unfamiliar place was a little scary for me. I have an older guy who is 11, so he was who I was most worried about. Luckily him, and his 2 sisters, were all able to board together in one large kennel. We received a tour (no appointment needed) initially to make sure we were okay with the set up/cleanliness of things. Everything looked and smelled clean in the kennel area. We were able to bring our pups own bedding to make them feel comfortable. My pups can be weary of other dogs and prefer not to be around them, so it was made sure by staff that they went out in their own potty area, without being next to any dogs on the other side of the fence. And having their own kennel made me feel safe for them, as I know a lot of other boarding facilities do open play areas (and this would not work well for my dogs). I'm really glad Montage is an option for us! I do wish they had a potty area connected to the inside of their kennel, or even just grass potty pads, that way they could freely use the bathroom instead of holding it until it's time for them to be let out. My only other complaint is that I called a few months ago about boarding them over the holidays, but I never got a call back, even after calling again and leaving a voicemail. Luckily this time around, we were able to get a hold of someone, and when we called to check in on them, we were able to speak to someone and get that information on how they were doing. Maybe staffing has changed since the last time we tried, but so far so good! Our pups were very happy to see us, and didn't seem to be in any distress. One of the best parts was that it was only $95 a night for all 3 of our pups combined. Definitely cheaper than any of the other boarding facilities I've looked at. We will absolutely be using Montage again for our next time out of town.
