The rooms are large and comfortable and nicely updated and decorated. The backyard and patio are amazing, with both a pool, a hot tub, and plenty of spaces to kick back and relax w/ a cup of coffee or glass of wine. The owners are very sweet and helpful and make a wonderful breakfast. We enjoyed eggs, sausage, and hazelnut encrusted french toast, with a cup of fruit and plenty of coffee and tea and juice. We enjoyed our stay at the R&R Guest House and highly recommend it for a quick getaway from Portland!!! Highly recommend staying here if you are in The Dalles.

We stayed here in October. We really wanted to try new things for this weekend getaway. The Dalles…read moreinstead of Hood River, new places to visit, new place to stay, etc. We have stayed in B&Bs and small guest inns before. We have had one where the hosts can't quit talking. Or where they were so creaky that you hesitate to use the bathroom at night for fear of waking up the whole building. Truthfully, R&R Guest House is none of those things. Kevin and Julie are friendly and will help you with as much or little guidance as you want on local hikes, wineries etc. But they aren't in your face or space... Another big highlight is that this property feels new and old at the same time. Definite charm retained in their remodeling. Yet, no feeling of "this doorknob might come off in my hand." And the hot tub and pool are very, very nice. The landscaping is lush and well laid out. Finally--the two meals we hadat this B&B was consistently the best meals we had that weekend, compared to restaurants in both Hood River and The Dalles. Not too often I give an unequivocal thumbs up, but here you go.

I'm kind of a low end/high-end girl when it comes to lodgings. My preference is for independently…read moreowned businesses of either kind. I'm all up for splurging on destination lodging on occasion, but because I tend to arrive late at night, the amenities are often wasted on me. If you're looking for reliable and reasonably priced lodging in The Dalles, Oregon, I highly recommend you consider The Dalles Inn. It's an independently owned and older property that is well-maintained and has loyal staff. it is centrally located on the west end of the main street that goes through town. The best rooms are in the four-story hotel but there are also two stories of rooms outside of the hotel that have stairs leading up to them from the outside, similar to a motel. I've stayed in both the hotel and the separate building several times. I would be happy with either. There is safe parking. Pre-pandemic, they had a lovely breakfast that rivals that of any I've had in hotels closer to twice the price. Due to the shortage of staff, the breakfast room isn't open right now but they prepare a lovely bag of breakfast goodies for you to take with you as you leave, or bring back up to your room. My most recent stay was on 9/14/22. I had contemplated traveling to see my father in Washington via Walla, Walla, WA, in part because I wanted to stay at the boutique property, The Finch. Online, they were advertising rooms for $157 per night. But when I called, they wanted to sell me a room for $220 plus per night because they were hidden fees and the room advertised online only had a bunkbed. I told them I wanted to look around and we call back if I was interested. I started doing a little research and thank goodness I did, because one of the things that came up repeatedly was customers complaining about the paperthin walls. I got the sense that this remodeled property might have formally been a Motel 6, which I avoid at all costs. I don't care how bougie a place is, I'm not paying a premium for paperthin walls. That's part of the reason why I prefer older properties. I quickly decided to travel via my normal route and called to get a room at The Dalles Inn. One of the nice things about independently owned businesses that are well-maintained is they usually provide a high level of customer service, which I have always found to be the case at The Dalles Inn. They generally don't have hidden fees either. When I called, the room that were available were outside of the hotel, which I was OK with, but the woman taking my reservation said she would make a note that if there was a cancellation of a similar room inside the hotel prior to my arrival, they would give me that room instead. As it turned out, I was able to get a room on the fourth floor. With my AARP discount, my room cost $81 as quoted. There were no hidden fees. The room was worth every penny. I can't remember the last time I got such a good nights sleep in a hotel room. Usually when I stay at hotels/motels, I need to use ear plugs. Not here. I love that the rooms at The Dalles are large and have bathtub/shower combos. Most newly built properties do not. Everyone seems to be going towards a design that looks similar to what I would consider a fancy Motel 6, including even the new Best Westerns. I had everything I needed in my room, including a well concealed mini fridge. I've been told of the owners of this property also have one or more in Albany, Oregon. I don't ever have a reason to go through Albany, but if I did, I would certainly be researching which properties they own. Highly Recommended!!!

Overall a pretty decent experience for a very budget motel…read more I recently stayed here for nine nights, which is the longest I've ever stayed at any m/hotel in my life. The entire staff was very friendly, attentive, and accommodating. The first seven nights, I was in a double queen on the second floor. The last two nights, I was in a single queen on the second floor. For whatever reason, the double queen was much, much quieter than the single queen. The single queen seemed to be directly above the laundry room, and some of the noises coming from there were frighteningly loud. Both rooms were decently clean. Neither was perfect or spotless, but there weren't any serious issues. I inspected both rooms very thoroughly for bed bugs (and I know how), and was not able to find any. The continental breakfast was about average. The waffle machine was working the whole time I was here, and the staff kept the batter dispenser stocked. Every single day, there was yogurt, cereal, Big Texas cinnamon rolls, and bread with jam. Things that came and went depending on the day were juice, butter, and fresh fruit. Note: The sugar-free apple jam smelled like one of the chemicals we used in my anatomy class on cadaver lab day. A small swimming pool was open during daytime hours, but I did not make use of it. As other guests have noted, there is a lot of old damage to the hotel that hasn't yet been fixed or replaced. The carpets in the rooms have been replaced with those cheap wood panels, but the main areas still feature very heavily soiled carpet. The blackout curtains in my room were decent, but had lots of small tears on them which, if I had to guess, look like a rat climbed the curtain at some point in the past. (This was also evidenced by a hole in the window screen.) The mini fridge and microwave both worked well. Most of the lamps worked well, although there was an eerie mixture of white and yellow light. The showers both had decent pressure, and I noticed the staff changing the curtains of every open room every day. While this is certainly not a luxury motel, I didn't feel too icky at all about showering (with my Birks, of course) or sleeping in the bed. Most of the guests are either construction workers, backpackers, or temporarily displaced, like myself. For this reason, for a motel, it's actually very quiet. Most of the hotels I've stayed in have been in Vegas or Tahoe, so this is probably the quietest motel I've ever experienced. I didn't hear any yelling, partying, or loud music at all. In spite of some issues with building repairs, it's safe enough, and comfortable enough.

We were situated on the ground floor of building A, near the end. Our view was mostly the service road that runs behind the hotel, but we did get a glimpse of the river, so I guess that counts. The room was large and "clean". I definitely believe it was cleaned prior to our stay, however, the carpet is old and stained, and furniture chipping away. Not really a big deal since we only spent about 12 hours in the room, mostly sleeping. Linens were fresh and the bed was comfy. We were also able to have our dog stay with us, which is one of the reasons why I booked to this location. This Shilo Inns is extremely dated, though the property is in the midst of an upgrade. When we arrived for check in, the main entrance was inaccessible because they were redoing it, so it took me a minute to figure out where I could enter on the side. Signage would have been helpful! The check-in process was quick and the man at the counter was super nice and accommodating. Other than that, we had no interaction with the staff. Breakfast was included in our stay (5a-9a daily). Nothing fancy, your typical free continental breakfast at a low/ mid-range hotel: coffee, tea, little plastic container juices, fruit, bagels and muffins, some cereals, oatmeal, etc. Enough to get some food in our bellies before we hit the road.
