Frye Art Museum - The main gallery room

While not a large museum, it's thoughtfully curated and a calm, accessible space, perfect for a…read moreshort afternoon art break. The Frye is a coalescing of sculpture, painting and a smattering of other media from the 19th century to contemporary. Since it's opening in 1952, the pieces on display have evolved from the original 232 pieces of mostly allegorical depictions of nature, scenes of daily life and portraiture, to include abstract and modern art as well. The museum brings together works collected by Charles and Emma Frye, local owners of a successful meat-packing plant who collected artwork from European and American artists of their time (second half of 19th century and early 20th century). Their original collection was displayed in a "salon style," with paintings hung floor to ceiling so visitors could engage in discourse about the various subjects, interpretations and comparisons while enjoying music and company of other cultural and intellectual counterparts. Bequeathed to the public upon their passing, their collection was first offered to the Seattle Art Museum though due to a number of stipulations set forth by the Fryes' will, was declined. Aside from one of the reasons being that the collection was to be shown free of charge, interestingly this also included a clause that the pieces not be shown together with abstract works. To the benefit of the community though, in 2007, the museum's mission shifted to become a space that also highlights contemporary artists, while still maintaining the spirit of the salon via a large portion of the original works shown this way in a large rectangular gallery. My experience here was pleasant, it took about 45 minutes to go thru, though you could spend less if preferred. There's small lounge seating area to take a break if you need, designed using the museum's art as inspiration, and next to that a cafe and bathrooms (which were in decent shape). A small gift shop is located at the front of the museum next to the front desk. Street parking can be a little hard to find depending on the day considering it's downtown Seattle, and I was lucky to find parking on the same block. For more info: https://fryemuseum.org/about

Some uphill walks but it was a nice walk actually. The museum is free which is nice you walk through and it is pretty much filled with many unique rooms, each with different pieces of art. It was pretty quiet but I do enjoy the placement of every piece. It's not a big museum so this probably won't take up so much time.

We had lunch at Ba Bar at U-Village then came to the gallery to walk off our lunch and take in a lot of interesting, diverse art. The gallery now offers FREE admission to everyone (thanks in part to 4Culture), whereas before it was only free to UW students, faculty, and staff. What I like about the Henry is the curation. They always have intriguing and interesting exhibits that are grouped well and have just enough art pieces for you to see and take in without getting overwhelmed. The space is clean, well lit, and pretty minimalist. Also like that they have a cute little cafe, City Grind, with both indoor and outdoor seating. On this visit, we were impressed by the exhibit by Diné artist Eric-Paul Riege (b. 1994, New Mexico). Riege's tactile sculptures of jewelry and other objects were HUGE and a cool sight to behold. A sign said that some sculptures could be touched gently which I fully took advantage of because these giant soft sculptures just called out to be touched. It's a terrific exhibit and is showing until October 25, 2026. Go see it while you can!

Lucky for me that they have an online store that will ship to me! There were art prints that I loved, and a book series by Nolen Lee that I am ordering soon. Great shop worth a visit!

They have a great cat/dog toy section! The store features art and goods from local artists and there's so much cute stuff. I can easily spend 15-20 minutes perusing all the goods. I found the employees to be lovely whenever I visited. They sometimes would tell me about an artist if I'm looking at their wares and I love hearing more detail about things but I never felt pressure to buy anything.  Also they sell anything under the sun here from jewelry to vases to clothes to things for kids and babies. Great variety. I found a random darling egg sticker for my friend who loves eggs and my friend found these cool mushroom magnets for her sister who loves mushrooms. See, this store is amazing!  Pacific Place is a shell of its former self. A lot of the stores have closed and it seems like most people who do come here are coming to eat at Din Tai Fung or HaiDiLao but if you're in this mall make sure to stop by the 3rd floor and check it out! Highly recommend it! There's something for everyone. Also can be a fun way to while away some time if you're waiting for your seat in the above restaurants.  Also I just learned they have a website  https://thehandmadeshowroom.com/ so apparently I don't have to be in Seattle to shop their goods! Free shipping on orders over $50.
