This pretty little motel is a jewel of a location! The owner Lynn, who can only be described as an angel, put us into a larger room the first night of our stay because we arrived late and the room she put us in was easier for unloading. The decor is quaintly country, but beautiful nonetheless. Flowers abound and Lynn was great about showing us around the room. If you visit Bangor, stay here! You will love your experience!

Not a 10, but definitely the best in the area. Plus, there's no such thing as a 10 when it comes to the service industry!

The rooms are very nice. Ours had a full kitchen. The queen bed didn't seem like a queen, but it was nice. Linens were clean and very fresh smelling. Overall, very good place. It's a family business. The people running the place clearly very dedicated and conscientious about everything. Decor is folksy and done with a nice touch. We were traveling with our one-year-old baby so it was good to have a kitchen and a nice firm bed with with reliable accommodations in a very clean room. I highly recommend this place!

Great Hospitality. Rooms huge. Beds better than expected. A bit dated but works hard to be clean and fresh.

Friendly competent and welcoming. The hotel lobby, kitchen area, pool, work out room, laundry and whirlpool is kept spotless. All the food put out is great, as is the breakfast staff.

There is plenty of parking both public and private (behind a key activated gate) and it's FREE. The lobby is very clean and staff is very friendly. I was able to get approved for a late checkout which is helpful as we are attending the PBR event next door at the Cross Insurance Center. The convenience of being able to walk to any venue at the center is very convenient and worth the costs. I got a king bed suite which has plenty of room and a pull out couch. Bathrooms are huge with plenty of lighting and our room had an oversized walk-in shower. Pressure and water temp were great and I didn't feel like I didn't have any room to move around. Bed is comfortable and like most places the pillows are "eh", where I typically have to stack a couple to get comfortable for me to sleep. The little kitchen has everything you need to cook a small meal for your family if you choose to. Ice maker is built into the freezer making it easy to produce ice without having to walk down a long hallway to find the ice machine. It's full size refrigerator in the suite so we ordered Walmart delivery to bring some snacks and drinks to the room. The Hollywood Casino is located across the street and there is plenty of restaurants and shopping within 2-3 miles of the area. If you are attending an event at the Cross Insurance Center, I would highly recommend that you stay at the Residence Inn both for convenience and comfort. The Timber Kitchen and Bar is located within the hotel but also accessible from outside the hotel. Read about my review with them that you won't want to miss. Overall, I had a great experience and I would stay here again if we attend any events at the Cross Insurance Center, both for the proximity to the venue, but also because I can keep my car parked for free at the hotel.

We'd never heard of the Charles Inn, and came upon them while booking a long weekend on Expedia…read more It's in a GREAT location in historic downtown Bangor, within walking distance to plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes. There's an adjacent coffee shop so there was the bonus of being greeted with the coffee aroma when entering the lobby. The hotel and café staff were pleasant enough. Bangor, Maine is the hometown of author Stephen King, and The Charles Inn has a Stephen King suite. I took two steps inside, saw the poster of Jack Nicholson in the "heeeeere's Johnny!" scene opposite the bed, and asked for a new room. Not my cup of tea, but apparently it's a very popular request to stay in this suite. While it may sound strange, staying at the hotel reminded me very much of sleeping over at my grandmother's house, where she lived the 40 years I had her -- some quirky things, some good things, some not-so-good things -- antique furniture, gold-framed mirrors, huge windows that didn't block out much noise, curtains that didn't quite close all the way, a toilet than runs constantly unless you jiggle the handle just right, creaky floors, abysmal water pressure, and generally in need of a good cleaning. The fan in the bathroom didn't work, and there was practically no place to hang anything. There was a small rack near the door with three flimsy hangers. Being late fall in Maine, having a place to hang coats and hats is important. We ended up just tossing our things on the bed which was not ideal. Another thing to note is that while "free parking" may be advertised, that translates to "street parking," and depending where you park, the time limit could be 90 minutes, 2 hours, or 4 hours. There is no hotel parking lot. There is a parking garage just down the block, but it's closed and locked on weekends -- so if you park there on a Friday afternoon/ evening, you're not getting out until Monday. The entire parking situation was very odd to me and is important to know for others traveling here. For the proximity to things downtown, I'd recommend the Charles Inn. For me, I'm not sure I'd stay again for the lack of some conveniences. When I'm traveling I'm trying to avoid hassles and annoyances and I can't say that my stay was void of either.

We stayed in the Stephen King Suite (we visited Bangor for the Stephen King tour so we decided go big or go home). The room is themed Stephen King but it isn't over the top. Let's start with the cons: -The amenities were bare and we had to request quite a few packets of shampoo (yes, packets...not bottles. 4 packets barley cleaned my hair). -uncomfortable bed -scary elevator ride -needs an update stat -terrible water pressure Pros: -extremely convenient location -if you're doing the Stephen King tour, the bus picks you up at the hotel -accommodating and friendly staff -pet friendly -walkable and safe -grass near the area to take your pet -cafe inside the lobby -keys to access the building at night One of the things that I loved was that we got in around 1am and they left the keys out for us to enter. We just checked in online and everything was ready. Also, if you're looking into this place because it's HAUNTED, I definitely had a few experiences. The lobby and third floor are said to be haunted. The Stephen King Suite is on the second floor but I had sleep paralysis in this room (last time I had sleep paralysis was in a haunted apartment in Texas over 7 years ago). The lobby creeped me out when I had to take our dog out in the middle of the night. I lit was a very heavy feeling and so I booked it to the elevator. So overall, this hotel is fine. It's a bit dirty and needs an update but everything else is fantastic. For a couple of nights, it isn't so bad.

For a hotel complimentary premade breakfast, theirs was excellent and one of the best we'd ever had. Lots of bacon. They had a very cool touchless pancake maker. Cons: The décor is very dated - we stayed on the 3rd floor that was decorated with a long row of first lady photos along both sides of the corridor hall - honestly it felt like something out of the Shining. There were odd sinks in the hallway near the elevator. The ice machine on the 1st floor was great but the ice machine on the 3rd floor didn't work and on the 2nd floor did not produce a lot of ice. The spa is tiny and no children allowed and the swimming pool is not connected to the hotel but in the parking lot. We wish they'd start the breakfast at 6am on weekends - we had an adventure planned so we had to leave at 7am when the breakfast just opened so we missed that morning. Keep perspective - this is not a posh modern hotel. Once you get used to its oddness, the hotel is a good, more affordable place for a good night's rest. We needed a hotel in Bangor ME for Labor Day Weekend - we checked the major chain hotels and the prices were all super expensive as it looks like they doubled their prices for the holiday weekend. Best Western White House Inn was the most affordable of what we could find. We noticed when we google mapped the hotel location, it was listed in Hampden ME as they are closer to Hampden but the Bangor address must be more desirable.

BUT: this whole no-contact hotel concept needs a lot of work--because right now it just seems lazy. The design is more or less as depicted, which is sorta "Northeast library" (i.e. random books and games strewn about), but shabbier and less finished, with peeling paint, scuffs everywhere, and literally some handprints in the paint in one part of the giant-maybe-former-bank-faux-wall-decor part of the room (I dunno, maybe someone was trying to escape?). When you start really looking around, there's a lot lacking, not really thought through, and cheap. Such as: the shower *looks* cool, with a non-movable metal and paned glass partition--but it lets water out everywhere when you take a shower and I had to use every towel I was provided with to mop it up. One measly towel hook in the bathroom (which wouldn't have been enough to hang my towels even if I hadn't had to use all of them to mop up the water from the shower). There's a coffee maker and some mugs--but nowhere to get just basic hot water unless you go downstairs to the communal "kitchen" (more on that in a moment), and no glasses of any kind. And not only is it a pain to have to leave your room and go downstairs just to get a cup of hot water, but that space was absolutely filthy: overflowing trash, a microwave splattered with caked-on stains, and nowhere to actually leave your luggage (though it was so dirty you wouldn't want to). Again, the host was responsive when I mentioned these things, but . . . it's all too evident that "contact free" means that there aren't any actual humans who are local paying attention to how this is all run. There's not really any competition Bangor for hotels, which means that this place can probably do just fine continuing on like this--but it would never fly anywhere where there are choices.

I asked the organizers for advice on where to stay, and they suggested The Phenix, as it was the only hotel within walking distance of the theater. It is also, apparently, the only hotel in downtown Bangor, and it's honestly a bit of a stretch to call it a hotel. The Phenix was a hotel called the Charles Inn, but it was bought by new owners and reopened last year as a hotel-shaped AirBnB. I booked my stay on AirBnB, where I found an individual listing for my room. I guess the Phenix has 37 rooms, and they do book up. My friend waited longer than I did and had to get a hotel farther away. I got clear check-in and check-out instructions through AirBnB, and my stay was pleasant and problem-free. The room was spotless and attractive, with minimal but thoughtful decor. Everything felt new or at least newly renovated. The king-sized bed was comfortable. I paid under $200 for the night, which I thought was reasonable for the quality of the lodgings. The place is definitely a 5-star AirBnB, but I wouldn't pick it over a hotel staffed by humans if I had the choice. As far as I could see, there was no one working there except a lone Roomba cleaning the floor of what was once the lobby. (There is a housekeeping crew; I was able to tip them through a link provided by my AirBnB host.) Thankfully, I didn't need anything special during my 20 hours in Bangor, and I have no doubt the Phenix was the right place to stay. I'd recommend it if you're coming through town. It's a sterile, well run AirBnB.

Staff is always friendly, willing to help and always greet you when you come into the lobby. The continental breakfast is a big reason why I choose Hampton along with the more affordable accommodations compared to other Hilton brands. The experience was no different for the Hampton Inn and Bangor with the exception of the wait time to get our room. Check-In is as 3:00pm and my family and I were not able to get into the room till 4:00pm. I am a Hilton Honors member, checked in the day before and despite all that effort spent an hour in the lobby area waiting for the room to be ready. Non-Hilton members were walking into the lobby whose rooms were ready. I know this because the front desk staff asked them if they would be interested in becoming members during their check-in process. We eventually got up to around room 1 hour later, but only because I got notification on my phone of my digital key being ready. The staff was not the one's who notified us. When I provided my feedback in their email survey, I got the typical response that said sorry and they hope we give them another chance, but my feedback will help improve. They did nothing to compensate me for the 1 hour less of room time I got but paid for. I can empathize with businesses who are short-staffed and the difficulty of hiring quality individuals to fill key customer-facing roles or support staff who make up all the other departments who make a business like a hotel function from day-to-day. I work for a bank, and we too have difficulty hiring quality talent or those willing to go above and beyond just the expected responsibilities.
