I ordered a cake for an engagement party, Sofia took my order and wrote my order down WRONG. I wanted it to say congratulations Jaclyn and Dillon a she wrote happy birthday. When I went to pick it up and I saw they made a mistake they tried saying that I SAID happy birthday (why would I say that for an engagment party?) and I have in written emails of what i wanted on the cake. They offered to fix it, without a cake decorator present... and tried to give me this horrible monstrosity of a cake!! I wish they would have told me no cake decorator was present to fix it rather than someone who works behind the counter who isn't qualified to ice it. The workers who helped me, Kendra and Emily, ended up wiping the "happy engagement " with a different butter cream and tried to tell me its the same. I grew up coming here and the colonial bakery will forever be my favorite bakery. You must try the crumb bun with powder sugar and the raspberry crumb bun. I've never had something bad here everything is better than the next and the crumb bun is the best of the best. There are two Colonial Bakeries in Lavalette, and I love them BOTH! My crumb cake geiger counter leads me to Colonial EVERY time! They have the real deal, glazed, powdered or plain. They also have excellent black and white cookies, rainbow cookies, and a whole host of other things! This past visit, I noticed bagels for the first time, didn't try them, but they looked gangbusters! PRO TIP!!! Visited this place while staying at my friends beach house in Ortley. They are known for their crumb cake. I tried the apple crumb cake stuffed with cinnamon apple slices. It was hands down the best crumb cake I've ever tasted. It was filled with cinnamon goodness and fresh apples that were the perfect size. They give you a good portion as well and is reasonable priced. I took some to my family and they all loved it! I also enjoyed their cheese danish. It is quite large and circular it doesn't look like your typical cheese danish. It was tasty and topped with some crumbles! I also got a box of their cookies. They have a variety of cookies. Being Partial to Muellers & Park Bakery for crumb cake & Buns in the morning I kept hearing you have to try Colonial. Well, this past week we finally did and boy are we happy we did so. Hands down the best crumb cake I have ever had in my life. Perfect balance of cake & crumb not too sweet simply delicious. The jelly donuts and Boston cream donuts were exceptional as well. Came here twice. The first time we bought 2 slices of crumb cake after reading the great reviews. It did not disappoint. The second time we bought the almond claw and chocolate claw. I want to express that my review is entirely based upon the staff. The girls behind the counter could not have been more rude. I'll preface this by saying that I used to come to Lavalette with my family as a kid in the early 00's and the colonial bakery was a highlight. I remember the joy I got as a child walking down the block to pick things up for my family, and to be received with such welcomeness. Fast forward to current day and I find my family to be ridiculed by the girls working behind the counter for replying that she'd prefer "whatever was the lowest milk they had", when all she was doing was trying to be accommodating and nice not knowing they're milk choices. My wife was mocked from behind the counter amongst the staff in front of other patrons. It pays to be kind to people, and I have not EVER regretted tipping an establishment until this. read more

Called them around 10am to see if they could deliver a CUSTOM cake for a special occasion. I needed it by their closing time same-day. They said they could squeeze it in and didn't even charge a rush order fee. The cake was super gooood. We returned the next morning for donuts. This is a nice seasonal bakery. Very pricey. But I guess it's like everything else at the jersey shore in season. The crumb cake is delicious. The bagels aren't that good. Cupcakes are good. Cookies are okay. I bought a birthday cake their last month. It was good but expensive. Overall it's convenient to get to. During the height of the Summer, get their early as the line gets long.
