Pains me to write a poor review, but sadly their service has degraded substantially over time. Colman used to be great, now it seems they are just electric drifters. We had an electrician come to diagnose arc fault issues. - The electrician reported that the issue was due to a particular AC using too much amperage. But when we unplug the AC - issues still persist. - The electrician claimed (without measuring anything) that the AC used 20A, but the label says 11.5A - The electrician ended by recommending I pay $5000 to upgrade the Amperage for the entire apartment I immediately called the office so they could send a different technician to re-evaluate. They stonewalled me, refused to re-evaluate the issue, or admit the absurdity of the issue First call cost $360 (already very expensive) and Colman refused to send anyone to reinspect the issue or issue a refund. read more

I have used Colman Electric on three separate occasions now. And each time the experience has been fantastic. I've used them in the past for simple light fixture install/replacement. But most recently had them out to rewire some lights and receptacles in my basement. On each occasion their crew in the field have been very prompt, respectful, helpful and organized. Had a 9am initial appointment during the work week for substantial electrical work. I arrived at the site on time and I waited... and waited.... After 45 minutes I called and was told "the owner is on the way" and "he should be there in the next 30 minutes". You must be kidding me!? The topper?: no apologies for wasting my time. Apparently they do good work if they decide to engage with you. After a neighbor recommended them, I called the office 3 times about replacing my smoke alarm system and then sent a long email to the owner. He didn't bother to even acknowledge it. Really a great company and great electricians. Very friendly both over the phone and in person. Bill and Matt where great. I had them come out and replace a breaker box and all of the breakers. A few month later I had a home inspection done (we were selling our home) and he pointed out some issues in the panel. Fact is mistakes happen and what really matters is how the situation is handled when it comes up. What was great was how promptly Colman sent out someone to fix the (very minor) issues. They were apologetic and prompt in their fix which I think is the most important. From my experience with Colman I believe it would be tough to go wrong. In the chance something is not 100% then they can be counted on to stand by their work and make the necessary fixes. read more

They showed up on time, were very friendly, and were very emphatic about delivering a comprehensive service. I selected Colman Electric based on their great online reviews and at first got a quick response from them to make arrangements for a site visit for job estimate. During the visit I was reassured that this is a straightforward job and John is going to provide an estimate that night. After that all communication went dark. I called Colman Electric several times and was told that I should leave a message and John would call me back. They played that game for a few days and finally I got an email with a short response that they are going to pass on my project. I had a fantastic experience with Colman Electric! I wanted a light installed in my front hallway, where there was no existing fixture or wiring. I called 10-15 places in the area and was rejected by everyone: the job was too small, they had no available appointments for months, etc. I called Colman and they were able to schedule an appointment for the next day. The technicians were punctual, communicative, and extremely thorough. I kept waiting for something to go wrong, or for them to tell me that the job wouldn't be possible, but neither happened. Owner is personable guy. Beware of very high labor rates. Licensed electrician shows up with unsmiling or communicative sidekick Jimmy and their combined hourly rate is $140. I spent $420 for the dynamic duo to trouble shoot [1 hour] a faulty receptacle and then replace it and repair the plaster they damaged in an adjacent room. On a breakdown I requested the $1.25 receptacle was billed as $6-- insult to injury....and I was charged 17 cents for a 3" wood screw-- poor customer relations. Talking of screws, I will avoid in future being screwed by these guys. Too bad, because the owner is a personable guy. PS., I am an architect and licensed builder so I feel comfortable saying their rates are too high, even for metro Boston. read more

I needed an electrician to do an inspection only - it was clear the job would be very small. I worried that I'd wait days for someone to get around to something this small. Colman Electric is an old neighborhood business- which is why I chose them. I stopped in to ask them about a job this small, and 2 hours later Mr. Colman just walked the 2 blocks over to my house. They are willing to be as creative as possible in their solutions, and remain flexible and good-natured when I change my mind about the height of the hanging lamp with the picture of Queen Victoria, even though they clearly think it is madness. Overall the work that was done was fair and completed to my satisfaction. However, my appointment was 8:30 a.m. electrician showed up around 9:15 p.m., i was quoted $80 an hour for one guy over the phone, but was charged extra for the "travel time" it took for the electrician to drive from Cambridge to Boston. If i had known i would be charged "travel time" which i think is completely unreasonable, the time at which you show up for a job is when a customer should be charged. Beware of "travel time" charges and ask questions upfront. read more

Could not have had better service from Colman Electric. I called about a broken lamp and was told to email a picture to Nancy who then got back to me pronto with an estimate. The repairs were completed within a week and ended up being less than the estimate. I will not hesitate to take any electrical items that need repairing to Colman Electric. read more
