The place is a little small and can feel a little cramped but that shouldn't deter you. Dr. Penn is kind, polite and a very good listener. He's highly professional and will make sure you get exactly what you need and ask for. I read by another reviewer that the selection of frames is very limited. But for being a small place, and only having one set of eyeballs, why would you need a wider selection and making more of a cost unnecessarily? They have more than enough and help you keep the cost down. Erin is excellent in the front office and helps you keep everything affordable if need be. Be careful, their service is absolutely terrible, and also their prices. After my eye exam, I got a new pair of glasses that made it impossible to see anything up close. When I called back, the receptionist actually had the nerve to tell me that my $400 glasses were 'only for driving, not for reading.' I had to challenge her before she finally transferred me to Penny, the doctor's wife. Later, I went in to have the lenses replaced. I waited for three weeks without any update. When I called to check, the same receptionist told me she had no idea how much longer it would take and couldn't provide any tracking info. She just kept giving me the runaround to get me off the phone; So far I still haven't received my lenses replacement. This is exactly the kind of service you can expect here--extremely poor attitude. That said, Dr. Penn expertise is undeniable, and he is very polite, but the front desk staff is a nightmare and without any service. read more

The place is very small and cramped. The glasses selection is also limited and the atmosphere is stiff and awkward. I have no idea why this place has such great reviews but the eye doctor was very dismissive and rushed. The eye exam took like 5 minutes and now that I have my glasses, my eyesight is blurry and makes me dizzy. The front desk woman is also quite rude and they don't take your concerns seriously. If you ask questions, she gets annoyed and won't answer anything directly. Get your exam and glasses ANYWHERE else please. I live up the street on Los Padres Drive and was looking for an Optometrist that accepts Eyemed. My first visit to Dr. Penn was June 2023 and my 2nd visit was in July 2024. Both times the front staff was nice and easy to speak with. Dr. Penn is knowledgeable and friendly, he didn't pressure me to try other contact lenses and instead offered me the usual Air Optix I wear. In the past I've gotten my prescription glasses here with my insurance and gotten contact lenses online paying out of pocket. I would recommend this business to other folks who need to get their eyes checked once a year. I will say that the plaza parking is really small, i would recommend parking across the street at HK plaza and walking over, small parking lot equals door dings. read more

What a hidden gem. I had a stellar experience at this location. Got there about fifteen minutes early and was finished with my contact lens exam in about 30 minutes. The doctor was able to recommend a new pair of toric contact lenses that felt very comfortable to wear. As someone who has worn the same brand of contact lenses for over 10 years, I was surprised at the knowledge he had about everything related to vision. Overall, I would highly recommend this place for people who need a contact lens exam. In fact, I might even get a new pair of glasses here after the wonderful experience I had. Dr. Penn saved my career as a firefighter. As a firefighter and engineer, I work 24-hour shifts. My duties involve me driving a 48,000lbs fire engine to and from emergencies day and night. However, I have a condition called keratoconus, which led to legal blindness. I worried I'd never drive again, as glasses, regular contacts, and LASIK weren't options. Dr Penn is amazing. This is our second visit with him due to my daughter's increased headache episodes. We managed to snag the last appointment of the day and Dr Penn was so kind and patient with my kid even though she was over the appointment the second we arrived. He was detailed in his explanation of what he thinks is going on based on his exam and his recommendations. Afterwards he asked me if I had any questions and made sure I understood and agreed with the treatment plan. He explained to my kid the importance of wearing her new glasses when they arrive. I have spent almost $1000 here because I want to see things clearly as before. Maybe my expectations is too high. I was told to wear my contact lenses at least two hours a day even though I CAN NOT work, see computer screen nor read my iPhones clearly. Can't read books or MLS sheets either. This is after 4th visit and after all the adjustments too. I hate these two hours becuser I work almost 16 hours a day now for my clients. It's super hard not able to see, read, or respond to my messages for two hours everyday. $1000 was the insurance money, I probably only spent $300-400 of my personal cash. I started coming here a year ago since my vision insurance changed to EyeMed and Costco (my go-to since middle school) didn't accept it. I found this place by searching up places that accepted my insurance and asking about contact prices. I got Clariti dailies when I first came to Colima Optometry. But my second time around, I opted for Vision Source Fresh Day daily contacts, a generic brand sold here, and they're great. They're the exact same as name brand dailies, and they're at a great price since Colima Optometry (seemingly) always has a buy 3, get 1 free special promotion on them. With their promotion, you get $200 off. I recently came in to get an eye exam and order new contacts and the experience with Dr. Penn was great. He does multiple tests to ensure your degrees are correct, including having you try contacts to ensure optimal vision. The front desk staff are also knowledgeable, quick, and friendly (they remembered me the second I walked in despite it being over a year since I last went). Highly recommend this place. They are terrific. My daughter had worst vision post 2020 (from a -2 to -4). We were recommended by my sister in law and I love how they took the time to explain available options for my daughter. We choose to do ortho-k (hard lenses you put on overnight). They understand working with her as a 10 year old. They had her practice several times to put on and take off her contacts. I found this optometry from the preferred list of Google Glass eye care professionals. There were only a few local ones near my place, so I decided to give them a call and asked about fitting prescription lenses on my Glass unit. No appointments were necessary. I came in the following day and met Dr. Pen. He was very professional, speaks clearly, knowledgeable, and friendly. It was fun chatting with him about Google Glass, and he is very knowledgeable of the program. He gave me a week of wait time (plus a couple days -- he was going to be out of town) for my frames to be ready. The day after my first visit, I decided to add transition to my lenses, so I called to add-on to my order. Dr. Pen was out of town and the receptionist got my number and told me to wait for a call back. Only a couple hours later, I got a call from the doctor and he explained to me over the phone benefits and disadvantages of transition lenses with regards to Google Glass. He really takes his time with his patients and lays out all the options in front of them. A week and a half later, Dr. Pen called and my frames were ready for pick up. I came in with my Glass unit, and he attached it to my new frames. After a few minor adjustments to my nose pads, I was good to go. The whole experience was smooth and easy. I highly recommend Dr. Pen and his services. He's very professional and a great guy! PS: Don't be confused. There's another optometry right beside it with a very similar name.
