Great atmosphere but it was hard to concentrate in there on Sunday mornings with all the kids in there. Coffee was alright, not as strong as I wanted it to be (I got an iced latte with almond milk). I spent several hours reading Bolano and Badiou at Coffee Hag last night and this morning. Coffee Hag is a first-rate example the kind of coffee house you can find in just about any halfway college town, but which is sadly scarce in Chicago. The late hours alone - open till 11! - make me weep for the days when "spending Friday night at a coffee house with my friends" didn't mean "sitting uncomfortably in a chain coffee store until 9 pm" or "lamenting that independent coffee houses in Chicago just can't afford to stay open late." That said, Coffee Hag was quiet, comfortable, staffed by impeccably friendly baristas, and the Americanos I drank were just fine. read more

I totally dig this place. I've had several clients in the Mankato area and I always schedule our meetings here. Gay-friendly coffee bar located in a cool, old building is the best way to describe this place, I guess. Really good coffee. They offer a few dishes that are always tasty. My favorite is the hummus with pita and cucumbers. Free wi-fi. There's a stage where bands, poets, etc perform. This place stays open until 10 on weekdays and 11 on weekends. I'm from out of town and spent the night at my friend's place on campus. After a long night, I woke up and went downtown in pursuit of a local coffee shop. I was not disappointed whatsoever when I came across this gem! I ordered a hot turtle mocha and a scone. Despite it being a little busy, I was served fast with great friendly service from the owner. The barista even made a very cool design in the froth of my coffee. I sat and enjoyed both my coffee and scone outside at one of their tables and enjoyed the fall morning. I visit Mankato for a few weeks once a year, and the best thing about Mankato is Coffee Hag. Great coffee, great coffee house style food (and affordable too), and a great vibe. I can work for days here without a second thought! The only problem is... I can't take it back with me to Minneapolis! Bonus points: the person working the counter was amazing, knowing the names and getting life updates from many of the local customers. This is definitely a place that is more than a coffee shop- it's the center of a community, a hub of community events and groups. And there isn't a drop of pretension in the whole place. And if you're LGBT/queer, this is the place to be who you are in comfort. read more

I have never had an Americano that I've really liked outside of the ones I've had at the Coffee Hag. I love the atmosphere, and that the employees and patrons are eco-friendly in many ways. Everyone is always friendly and helpful. There's almost always a show or two on the weekends, and (at least when I lived in Mankato) almost all of them were FREE (with an exception here and there). They also feature works by different artists every month or so, which is a good way for artists to promote and sell some of their work. The owner of the Coffee Hag also organizes the annual Old Town Art Fair, which is a lot of fun too. Free Wi-Fi is available as long as you ask an employee for the password. The only complaint I might have is seating is sometimes hard to find during rush hours, but that could be expected anywhere. Definitely a place I always try to visit when I'm back visiting town! read more

I sought this out after reading up on yelp, and with a blinding handover in Mankato I was not sure where to go. It was a shirt stroll from downtown, and easy to pick the most hipster place in town, if that's your style. Coffee was good without being exceptional, but the ambience was just right, great tsatskas scattered around the place, friendly service, and good vibes. There are so many options, no matter your walk of life. I am lactose-intolerant, and the options for soy/almond milk really help make any drink special. The decor is amazing. Beautiful Victorian age ceilings, walls lined with home-town art, album covers... What could be better? The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the place is a no hate coffee shop- meaning you're welcome here, no matter what walk of life you may be. Come check out their live venues on Saturdays!
