I visited this location twice, the first time in mid-July and the second in late August. At the bottom is the email I sent them (while at their cafe) during my second visit. A few notes for context: 1. The first time, the music was energetic, which is fine by me. 2. I did think about leaving (or trying to work outside), but a) I had to be in Westwood for an event in a couple hours, b) most places in that area close by 3 or 4, c) it was in the middle of the heat wave, so it was brutal out. 3. I never heard back from them. 4. The only reason they don't get one star is because of my first visit. Needless to say, there have to be other options in West LA that are open a bit later, so I'll just have to look harder. And now my letter, which shall serve as my review: I'm sitting at the Palms location. It's a perfectly nice spot--nothing wrong with the coffee, and the workers are friendly--except for one thing: The music is aggressively loud. I asked one of the baristas if it was possible to lower it just a hair, and I was told that they have no control over the volume--that this is management's choice. She suggested I bring headphones, but the problem is I had them--and even with over-ear noise-cancelling headphones, I'd have to turn things up to hearing-loss levels to block it out. I thought perhaps the idea of keeping the music at this level is that you want to deter people from staying. But your website says "great coffee should feel welcoming" and that you want to serve us coffee you're proud of "whether you're grabbing a quick cup or settling in for the morning." And again, we're not talking about levels that are a bit energetic; we're talking about something that feels more akin to an aural assault. Ironically, a lot of what was playing is music I like. Coffee Commissary is one of two coffee shops walking distance from me in Palms, so I've been a few times now. It's a good place to work because there's lots of tables (but I have noticed they play their music REALLY loud, so maybe they don't actually want people working there, I don't know). The coffee is fine, I specifically like their blended drinks; there aren't many places around these days where you can get good blended drinks besides coffee bean. The food I've tried I've really enjoyed, and I've been meaning to try a breakfast burrito at a friend's recommendation. However, the service at this location every time I've been there has been laughably bad. Like has me wondering "what did I do??" Which is not an enjoyable experience. When I've ordered the blended drinks, the baristas have either made a weird comment ("it's really sweet...are you sure?" I know, I like it that way!), and/or scoffed or GLARED at me for ordering it?! Then practically shoved my pastry into my hands. I understand having a bad day, I've worked customer service and sometimes you're just in a bad mood! But something to this extent has happened every single time I've been to this coffee commissary. Love this place, coffee is good quality and rich, beans are not burnt which is often a problem in the U.S. perfectly rich, never too bitter. Their suadero burrito with chipotle crema is very good, if a bit pricey. Staff is nice and friendly, have had many nice encounters with the workers there. A good place to work on essays or other work. Also dog friendly. If you go there frequently I'd recommend getting the Cash App rewards cause I think they do add up! read more

Very small establishment with only street parking. The places to sit are so close to each other that if you sit next to someone you'll probably knee each other. The coffee at best is mid and overly priced for the quality. If you're not a regular, they'll walk away from the register and pretend to do something until they feel like taking your order (even when you leave a nice tip). The variety of food items are also very limited and the flavor is also mid. I personally prefer the coffee shop on Tabor & Motor, especially if I want a pastry. The real MVP is literally down the street from this location on Overland and they have the best bagels (Daniel's bagels). read more

Amazing coffee and a great place to get work done. I've been looking for another coffee shop to do work at, and luckily I found Coffee Commissary. First off the coffee tastes amazing, I had a mocha and also tried the vanilla bean frap that my boyfriend ordered, and it's all reasonably priced. Next time I'm back I'll try their breakfast burritos. The staff are all super friendly. They have ample indoor and outdoor seating, with a cute patio area on the side. Pros- They have the best coffee in the area. Cons- that is, when they have coffee. I would say probably 1 out of every 4 times I go they are out of coffee. More often than not there are multiple workers standing around on their phones who have not bothered to brew a new pot. I contacted the management and got the standard "this is unacceptable and we will talk to our workers" but it keeps happening. I actually find most of the workers to be super friendly but I do feel like the management just figures "we are popular, growing,doing well- who cares about customers who have to wait for coffee." They should look around at all the once popular businesses failing and realize people have increasing options. I ordered a latte, which tasted like WATER. I also ordered the Angeleno burrito and was so disappointed.
