I was a little disappointed that the beignets were not made fresh to order as I've experienced before; instead, they were piled high in a warming pan under a heat lamp. After placing our order of beignets and coffee, the beignets were covered with lots of powdered sugar (yay!). They weren't very hot, but they were tasty enough - a bit tough. What I did appreciate was that they weren't greasy at all, which can be a common problem! The coffee was (vanilla hazelnut) was decent, although a bit bitter. So glad I decided to listen to my yelp friends Jando & Boon on trying this place out! I have yet to try the beignets in NOLA, but I heard this place might even be better. Got here pretty early on a Friday, plenty of parking, they also have a drive thru available. We went inside. Restrooms clean, two stalls in the women's bathroom. Tables are constantly being cleaned by staff since the powder can get the tables a bit messy. I wasn't sure what to do when I walked in or where to go to place an order, I followed the crowd, you grab a tray, a mug, get your hot chocolate, coffee or tea.. order your beignets or anything else and pay as you get down the line.. not sure how take out order works. Probably the same line. I went with the beignets x3 which was PLENTY for me and two other people. They were so warm, fresh, delicious. Paired perfectly with my cafe au lait! I definitely will come back when I'm in the area again for sure! My son had their blueberry muffin and said it was really good. They have lots of different soups, salads, ice coffee, chocolate milk, etc.. ready to be purchase in the fridge along the left side wall. Straight up childhood memories at Coffee Call. When I'm home in Baton Rouge I make it a point to stop at least once. I usually do drive-thru but decided to go inside this visit. All of the memories came flooding back! I remember the original location like it was yesterday. Loved seeing families sitting around the table catching up on the weeks events while enjoying their cafe au lait and delicious hot beignets! I saw several students studying as well although I'm not sure how they do it cause it can get loud and busy! It was nice to sit down with my son and enjoy one of my favorite treats! I remember coming here as a kid and was excited to bring my partner with me when we were passing through town on a road trip. My partner wanted beignets and I was excited to share that these were the best I was aware of. Walking in and seeing the white arch and blue walls brought back so many memories of sitting in the cheery and friendly interior with family. We accidentally arrived close to the end of their lunch service at 2, but their chef Michelle came out and ensured she had our po'boy order before they stopped taking sandwich orders and brought it out to us. I wasn't sure if we were supposed to wait to get the beignets or try and hear them call our name from across the cafe (we chose to sit near the entrance by the window that showed behind-the-scenes coffee roasting) and when I asked the cashier Barry, he said he'd bring our beignets when they came out. The space is perfect, tables and chairs remind me of an outdoor competitor down near the Strand but the AC is much more nicer in this weather. Every few months in my 20s, I made the 14 hour treck from Houston to Atlanta or vice versa. Along that treck there was 1 mandatory stop...a beignet run! Awful in Atlanta, worse in Houston, in an effort to kick my Cafe du Monde addiction, I gave Coffee Call a try, and un-teen years later, I wouldn't have it any other way. I refuse to contribute to the debate. In my opinion, these two are like my two children- why in the world would I choose to support only one? They do not provide the beignet experience of Cafe du Monde, nor do they try to emulate them, they provide good beignets, and a different experience. The dining room is spacious, and they stay packed...with good reason. So why the debate? All hail these pillowy, fresh, fluffy sugar topped dough balls in all shapes, sizes and forms (and if you so happen to be from Houston, it IS worth the day drive). read more

These are the best beignets in Louisiana! We've been coming here for decades and it is incredible! The beignets are almost always the perfect combination of doughy but light. Occasionally they are overcooked or extremely heavy but it is more common for them to be perfect. The service is almost always very nice - they treat their customers like family and are more than happy to help. The most recent time we went though the service was quite different (the reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars). They had us order our beignets and then stand at the front waiting for them to cook and serve the plates which has happened before but this time it was poorly organized. Generally if the beignets are not already served the will just bring the tray to the table but this time there were tons of people clogging up the front of the line all waiting to pick up their food and no one knew who was first or who ordered what. Also they removed all napkin holders from the tables - beignets necessitate many napkins. Also, it was incredibly difficult to get a to-go bag, normally you just grab one for any leftover food. This time they were nearly forceful in using three tiny bags instead of one slightly larger bag which was certainly an unusual experience. I hope our experience is not indicative of the future of Coffee Call. read more

In the 13 years that have passed since I wrote this review, a lot has changed. LSU has won another championship, Baton Rouge actually has trendy Asian food, social media is more of a thing than ever, and I love Coffee Call enough to give them 5 stars. I was never much of a coffee aficionado much less someone who craved beignets, but now I can't get visit this place without getting at least one of the two. The beignets have been a hot ticket for all visitors to BR where some folks will even say they're better than Cafe Du Monde in NOLA. I won't contribute to the argument, but I will say that these fingers are way easier to eat. They are a fun item to share and the sugar high can get intense. The cafe au lait is a must order for coffee fiends. In my previous review I had noted that I wasn't into it, but fast forward a decade plus and I'm sipping away like the rest (best?) of them. The hot version is also good, but I prefer the sweetness of the iced version. I always tell them to keep it light on the ice so it doesn't get watered down so quickly. For folks who want to enjoy the experience at home or want a quality gift from BR, they should consider getting a beignet / king cake (seasonal) mix bag and their coffee (grounded or in bean form) from their souvenirs. I was expecting them to be pricey, but many are below $10 making them a great value. As COVID is a thing still, I would highly encourage everyone to sit away from each other, at least indoors. They still have outdoor seating and a drive thru that is still very popular. Everyone should make this a must visit during any stop in Baton Rouge. read more

Coffee Call is a Baton Rouge CLASSIC. Incredible beignets, hot, fresh, and perfectly sugared. Café au lait a plenty. A vintage feel and friendly, warm staff. A wonderful place to meet family and friends. It's barely changed since I was a child and we are so good with that. If you've never been, it's important to know that it's a casual place where you stand in line to order, and the line can get quite long on a daily basis. It moves quickly though, as the beignets are fast to cook. I highly recommend branching out sometime to try their biscuits, especially with the smoked sausage. Couldn't wait to let my kids try their first beignet! Stopped in on the way to New Orleans. Had good reviews and thought it might be a little more mom pop. Not so much. Other than the older gentleman, possibly the owner, service was bad. When we walked in, the older gentleman smiled and welcomed us. Once at the counter, we had to get their attention. The bearded guy seemed bothered to have to customers. We ordered our coffee to go, so when we asked about cups without turning to even look us he motioned, "they're over there" But those were actual mugs for dining in... Anyway, I've been to New Orleans several times, and these didn't compare. Then again, bad service does leave a bad taste in your mouth. So even if they were great, I wouldn't come back or recommend just based on the poor service. Promised my kids they'd have a chance to try beignets in the city. If you're just driving in, just wait. Things taste different with the surroundings of the quarter. For your first time at least. Or maybe you'll catch them on a better day. read more

The beignets are unmatched in Baton Rouge, which is why the line is long every weekend morning! Went here for our dessert on our way back home to TX. Great customer service the lady was honest about the product after hearing I was traveling back to TX. They misunderstood me about want my order togo. I forgot to tell them keep the sugar seperate. So they packed it with the sugar already on it them the other lady say no we make you a fresh batch and keep sugar seperate that way it won't harden when you get home. That's honesty and great customer service. I weren't gonna ask for a redo, but she insisted. After all that she still gave me the extra order along with the new order. My total was $22 I gave him $40 and told him keep the change as a tip for all of yall. All day in Baton Rough drove 3hr to pickup my new car @Richard Honda and ate great seafood @chimes then end it with dessert. And drove back home happy. A bright and airy place noted for beignets and cafe au lait. Pretty sure it's the only place in Baton Rouge to get New Orleans style beignets. Here you can get them in two styles: regular and beignet fingers which are a longer thinner version of the beignet. Supposedly the fingers are easier to eat and not as messy but not as good in my opinion. If you want a beignet, you might as well get the traditional version and be prepared to be covered in powdered sugar either way. The clientele here is a bit on the older side compared to most coffee shops in town. Looks like a bunch of old-timers who meet here on the reg. Gives the place an old school feel which it deserves. Coffee Call has been in Baton Rouge since before coffee shops were cool. I still miss the original location which had a be sacrificed to make way for the new Wal-Mart but when they moved here they did a good job of preserving the look and feel of the place we'd always known. Same color scheme, lights, etc. There are other items on the menu as well. I've seen people eating soups and such but I've only had the beignets here. Also, there's a drive through if you're in a hurry. I'll give it a 10 out of 10, mostly because it is the only place in town to get beignets and there isn't another place like it in Baton Rouge. I was taken here close to 20 years ago on a business trip and loved it. In October I had to drive through Baton Rouge, had a hankering for beignets, and decided I'd try to find it. Yelp made it easy to find, and it's just a couple of blocks off I-10! I arrived on a Saturday morning. It's obviously still a local favorite as there was quite a few people. My beignets and cafe au lait were wonderful and decadent. I had not had one in several years. I have been to Cafe Du Monde, and consider the beignets at Coffee Call every bit as good - without having to drive all the way into New Orleans, fight traffic and pay as much for parking as for the beignets! The only thing I felt they could improve on was their customer service. They could take a few lessons from Chik Fil-A. The employees serving the customers didn't seem to be enjoying themselves, nor enjoy waiting on people. Had I not been so intent on getting some beignets, I may have not stayed. That's sad, because they have a quaint establishment, and a great product. Another thing that I didn't understand... to go cups do not get refills as do the drinks in real mugs or glasses. Since I was wanting to get on the road, I got the to go cup anyway. If I travel through again, I'll probably still stop by. How have I never written a review for the place that brought my parents together!!! Backstory is that my parents worked here back in the day when it used to where that Walmart currently is. They met and fell in love and here I am today LOL. Fun fact: my dad claims to have invented the beignet "fingers." He said before that they only had the squares and he likes crispy things so he made the fingers shape. Anyways Coffee Call is a Baton Rouge staple. It's got delicious beignets, coffee, hot chocolate, and so much more. I always get the fingers because they're fresh, hot, and crispy. I loved coming here for lunch on weekdays since they had the salad & soup bars. My go to is the roast beef poboy and then a side of soup. They stopped the buffet style bar due to Covid and also their hours have been shortened. There's nothing else to say other than you MUST stop here at least once if you are in BR. read more
