I bring this up because I'm the type that will take something small and write a chapter's worth of text detailing it. While not 100% perfect, all things considered, I had an excellent experience with Dr. Gu and the office at Oral Surgery South. While I'm sure having wisdom teeth out is fairly routine for the office, for me, the word "surgery" is rather anxiety-inducing. Since I had five of the buggers, including one horizontal, it wasn't as simple as having your regular dentist grab the Novocain and a pair of pliers. A man can dream. In my initial consultation, a panoramic x-ray was taken, I was then shown a video about wisdom teeth extraction which covered the procedure and some FAQs. After the video, Dr. Gu and a couple nurses/medical assistants came in to review the x-rays and answer any questions. I sit here now saying that all my questions were answered, and,\ Dr. Gu stood by his medical opinions (I've had Dr.'s lead with "What do you want to do"). The anxiety made it feel a little rushed, but again, no question went unanswered. Finally, I was given instructions to prepare for surgery and got a text from my pharmacy that the medication was ready before I left the office. The surgery itself was thankfully uneventful. I don't remember a thing! I think the anesthesia given makes you forget everything, but you're technically still awake. The doctor apparently stopped in post-op, but I still under and didn't remember. Would have been nice if he also stopped when I had come to - but I realize this would be more for my psychological comfort than for medical need. For the post-op experience, I felt a little ill-prepared. On the flip side, the office was been beyond wonderful and patient with my calls and answering any post-op questions or concerns. No waiting half a day for a callback, but answers in a minute or so. First, loss of taste. I knew Novocain made you completely numb, but a loss of taste was rather scary. All it took was a call, I got to speak with Dr. Gu himself, and I was assured this was to be fully expected. Second, A medication which **might** be needed post-op wasn't sent to the pharmacy the day of the surgery as I was told in the consultation. Thankfully I didn't end up needing it at all, and I'm sure all it would have taken was a call to the office. Still - if it is standard practice and I had needed it late that night, it would have been nice knowing when to expect it. Then there were jelly clots. These are exactly as 'delightful' as they sound, and I won't go into detail in case some of you all are queasy. During the consultation, I would have liked to know these are a possibility and how to prevent or combat them. Still, I have to give the office massive props. When I called with this problem, not knowing what it was, and thinking my gums had swollen over my teeth, they got me in that morning. Dr. Gu took a look to make sure everything was okay and answered a couple other small concerns I had. He did offer me to come in a couple weeks to laser off extra/slightly swollen gum tissue, but this ended up going away on its own, and no lasering was needed. About a month after the surgery, I found I was no longer thinking about the missing teeth. Everything had more or less returned to normal. While the bone grows in, a tiny bit of food seems to have a tendency to pause in the empty space, but this is minor and increasingly rare.

The staff were wonderful & Dr. Elkadry was very kind/understanding about the delay since my last cleaning. I also have a 1 month old baby so the doctor talked with me about pregnancy and breast feeding hormones and what they do to teeth. I would highly recommend this practice for dental care. The only drawback is that you have to call to make an appointment - no online option.

That said, like all matters in my life I turned to the people I trust and respect in times of necessity. For the past two years I have been lucky enough to have DR. Katarina Pavlicic as a client of mine and felt comfortable seeking her advice as the pain mounted and the need for treatment became unavoidable. Surprisingly, on her vacation, she took my call and was kind enough to listen while I whined on and on. She gave me many suggestion and solutions on dealing with the pain with the bottom line being that I could see one of her recommended colleagues, or wait and see her in two days. I chose the latter and have been thrilled I did so. From the moment I arrived and was greeted by Rene at check- in, to the dental assistant Ellen's amazing way of being comforting and funny I was put much more at ease than I expected. I relaxed and put my trust in Katarina. Before I knew it, I was walking out the door. Please don't be fooled by the number of 5 star reviews like I was…read more I was really excited to contact this office after seeing the Invisalign promotion and reading so many positive reviews, but unfortunately my experience did not match the expectations. When I first called, I was offered a virtual consultation the following day, which I completed thinking I would be able to schedule an in-office visit shortly after. However, I was told the next available appointment was about a month away. Although that was frustrating, I still scheduled it. Later, my sister received a follow-up text from the office about confirming an appointment. She also had reached out to inquire about Invisalign. But By that time they finally replied to her, she had already decided to move forward with another dental office, so she asked if I could take that available slot instead. The office replied saying that would be fine. However, when I was about five minutes away from the office, the receptionist, Hannah, called and said there had been some confusion and that I should keep my original appointment. That was extremely frustrating because I had already rearranged my schedule and was on my way. It didn't make sense that I was told I could come in if I ultimately couldn't be seen to conduct the appointment in its entirety. When I eventually had my appointment, the doctor and the back-of-house staff were very kind and professional. The visit itself was going well, and I told the doctor I wanted to move forward with Invisalign. I was then told it would take about four weeks for the trays to come in. I've had Invisalign before and know it often takes closer to two weeks, but I was still willing to proceed. The biggest issue came when discussing payment. I was given four payment options, and I asked if I could use my dental insurance and pay the remaining balance with my CareCredit card. I was told that wasn't possible. They mentioned they asked the doctor and apologized, but the answer remained no. I've never experienced a dental office being so restrictive about how a patient chooses to pay. It also makes the promotion offered very misleading considering that's not what's advertised. Overall, while the doctor and clinical staff were pleasant, the confusing scheduling, poor communication, and inflexible payment policies made the entire experience frustrating and ultimately felt like a waste of time. Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend this office.

Front desk seems to constantly reschedule because they schedule you on days the dentist isn't there. I will not return. Final straw was a dentist who was dismissive when I was in pain. Didn't have trauma about dentistry before but I do now. Early on I had big frustrations. My very first appt was an emergency appt because I was in a lot of pain. I came in, we did xrays, and discovered I needed a root canal and a filling. I was in a lot of pain (even explained that I was having trouble eating) so I assumed that the next appt one week later would be a root canal. I was shocked when not only had they scheduled me for just the filling but it wasn't noted anywhere on my chart that I needed a root canal. Since the filling and root canal were on different sides, I had to sit through a filling while being in a lot of pain becuase they can't numb both sides of your mouth. So after another week, they were finally able to take care of the root canal. I really wasn't thrilled but I realized people sometimes make mistakes. This was my first red flag. The final straw came a few months later. I started working with a new dentist that I didn't like. He would disregard me when I would say I was in pain during procedures. He would say, "I'm almost done," or "You can't feel that," when I would try to express that I was in pain. The last appt he ever worked on me he told me that I needed to stop wincing in pain because it was making his job harder. I was so humiliated and angry. This was only the tip of the iceberg of my frustration. You see I had ended up needing another root canal. Since this last dentist started the procedure, no matter how much I wanted and asked for someone else, I had to see it through with him. He did the root canal and I had to return for a cap. Well the first cap they measured didn't fit. Frustrating but completely normal and understandable. However, measuring me for the cap was painful the first time. So we did a second round of measuring (where they have to cut your gums in order to measure the tooth). It was worse than the first time. My eyes were watering I was in so much pain. But after voicing that I was hurting, I was told to just lay back and relax. They took two separate measurements and shipped it off to their lab. The day of my next appointment, they call me. I'm supposed to go in to get my cap on. At first they say that I'll need to cancel because they don't have my permanent cap. The lab had sent the molds back to them and they didn't know why. Then they changed their minds. The dentist wanted me to come in to do another round of measurements. I broke down. I had a full crying panic attack. I couldn't sit there in that chair again while this guy cut my mouth open and hand waived my pain away. This was especially considering they had no idea why the lab had sent the molds back. Long story short I haven't been back. I'm never going back. I was willing to put up with some miscommunication between the dentist and the front desk staff. I was willing to put up with the constant rescheduling because the day I was scheduled, the dentist didn't actually work. I refuse to work with someone I can't communicate with. Moreover, I will not work with anyone I don't trust.
