terrible. samosas were basically greasy eggrolls, the naan was hard and felt microwaved, the chicken was fatty and the only edible item was the rice. Avoid at all costs. read more

ATMOSPHERE: Small, cramped room where tables are shoe-horned too closely to one another and semi-private conversations are totally out of the question. Unless you enjoy the sound of screaming babies and restless children when dining out, would highly recommend that you avoid weekend brunch. FOOD: I'm not sure I understand what the hype is all about. Easily the worst Indian buffet we've ever experienced. Where's the beef curry? Where's the chicken tandoori? Instead, all they put out is leftover junk that nobody ever orders from the a-la-carte menu. I basically dined on not much other than naan bread while I was there. SERVICE: During our visit, the buffet station was always half-empty. FINAL VERDICT: I was in a hurry to pay the bill (over $40) just so I could leave and go eat somewhere else -- and I've never done that before. I can't remember the last time I was so bitterly disappointed while dining out. All in all, it doesn't come remotely close in quality to the fondly-remembered Haveli Restaurant that had been in the Byward Market for many years. read more

4.5/5 I don't know what's up with these one-line one-star reviews popping up for this establishment - but I assure you they are likely from trolls. I came here with a huge group on Thursday for lunch and we reserved the back room for about ~20 of us. Apparently that room could seat about 24 normally. It's an unassuming place - modest, nondescript. There's not a lot of parking at the front, although you can park farther down the street. All of us had the lunch buffet ($13.99) and it is Worth. Every. Buck. I only lasted two rounds, but suffice to say that I was very full and satisfied at the end of it. I skipped the soup, although I heard rave reviews for the sweet potato ginger from my colleagues. I had the following items instead: butter chicken, masala chicken, pepper lamb, and salmon curry (I pretty much tried all of their entrees) on basmati; what looked like potato and spinach pakoras (but they might be called something else); chickpeas, the tomato/cilantro/onion salad, and finishing off with the mango tapioca pudding. It was a burst of flavour from the first bite. Incredibly tasty food. The chicken was moist and the lamb was tender. I'm very sensitive to spice, so I swear my mouth was having a gastronomic orgasm from all the flavours it was experiencing. It did get a little too spicy once I got to the chickpeas, but I regret nothing. This isn't your tabasco hot sort of spice - this is the authentic, Kerala-style, fresh, and flavourful type. The best kind, in my opinion. I guess it helped that the service was pretty decent - with constant water refills. I don't know about you, but I always get nervous when water levels fall dangerously low and I'm eating spicy food. Thankfully, our waiter always came by before I had to resort to stealing water from my colleagues. Overall, a really enjoyable experience I would not mind at all repeating in the future. They could work a bit on the dessert selection though - the mango tapioca pudding was perhaps the only item that mildly disappointed me. Oh and lastly... yes, you do smell a lot like the buffet by the time that you leave... but seriously, what better indicator that you just had an excellent Indian meal? read more

*Let me preface this by saying that I wish Yelp allowed me to rate separately for food, ambiance, service, etc.* Food - 5/5 Ambiance 4/5 Service 2/5 Staff's attitude - a lot is left to be desired Price - Quite expensive for what is offered First, about the food - Excellent!! I went here for a Friday buffet when I was visiting Ottawa. I had heard a lot about this restaurant from people who had lived here and food wise, it totally lived up to its expectation. It's one of the few South Indian buffets that I found in North America and the taste doesn't get better than this. The Kerala Parota was cooked to perfection, the mix veg curry and ooty mushroom was perfectly spiced. The rice was very nice and fluffy and went perfectly with the Sambhar and the papad which was very very tasty That said, the service was less than satisfactory. From the moment I sat down, I noticed that they treated me differently. After the first time that water was served, nobody even asked me if I wanted to order a drink - I ignored it as maybe a mistake Then, 5 mins after I picked my first plate of food, while my plate was still half full, one server asked me if I'm done when I wasn't. A few minutes later, I was getting up to get my second round of food and the same waiter cleared my table and hastily replaced my water goblet after seeing that I'd actually gone to the buffet station. By the time my second plate was half empty, they wanted to clear my table again and when I said that I was still working on it, he seemed a little annoyed When I was done and was at the counter to pay for my meal, I wanted to compliment the chef on the meal but the conversation went like this Him: Tamil? Malyalam? (South Indian languages) Me: No, Kannada Him: Bangalore? IT? Computer? Me: Yes Me: (trying to tell him about food) Him: Here sign this (and turned away) After the first couple of times that I felt that I was not treated properly, I looked around to see their interaction with non-Indian people and saw that they were very friendly to them I do not expect exceptional service everywhere but I do expect same service to every paying customer irrespective of how you look. I didn't think that this is how the owner of this restaurant read more

Came out very very disappointed with the food! We ordered a variety of dishes from nalhi ghost, fish curry, lamb biryani, mussels in coconut curry , duck curry, paratha and chapati , chicken pakora and "samosa". The "samosas" couldn't be called samosas as they were triangular curried veggie spring rolls. All the dishes were thick mush of gravy heavy with cream or coconut milk with hard to fish out bits of unidentifiable protein! read more

In this episode, I eat too much and fall off my chair happy. There is so much mediocre Indian food in Ottawa, it is a delight to find really good, really original food prepared with so much care and attention -- and at a buffet! This is Kerala-style from the south of India. Region is famous, says our server, for coconuts and lagoons (thus the name of the restaurant?) Ginger sweet potato soup with ground up fried chiles was a great start. Soup would have been the star if not for the lentil donuts. Warm, savoury, fried rings of flavour - soft and crunchy all at the same time. Lots and lots of mains and sides to choose from. Sides featured a lot of fresh vegetable salads, bean salads, and a ton of condiments - many were new to me. Coconut chutney is great. Hey, did I mention they bring you a plate of fresh filled dhosas (think crispy crepes) with coconut chutney to your table when you arrive? The best of the main courses for me were the pepper lamb - rich and tender - and the curry eggs. Yep, curry eggs. Think of a savoury, creamy, coconut custard. Better add another one of those lentil donuts on the side. Salmon curry was also good. Dessert - and I never get dessert at Indian buffets - was transcendent. Sweet little cakes in piping hot syrup sounds a bit overkill, but not when paired with tangy mango tapioca mousse. Wicked good. Location is definitely out of the way -- Between the Minute Muffler and the Islamic Cultural Centre. Parking is not bad. Lots of seating AND they have a weekend brunch buffet. read more

From the outside you would never guess that it is the best indian restaurant in Ottawa. They serve south indian food, or more specifically Keralan food (a state in india) which is known for it's mix of tangy, sweet and spicy flavours. I'm a huge dosa fan, and this is the only place I have found in Ottawa that has the authentic tangy flavour to its dosa. I usually get the crispy plain paper dosa, and about two bowls of the yummy coconut chutney. We often come here on Sundays for the buffet, it allows you to try all their great meals like pepper lamb, the king fish, idlis, as well as all you can eat dosas! The butter chicken here is amazing! Though a north indian dish, after being asked numerous times if they had the dish, they had to start serving it. I'm happy they decided that if they had to serve it, they would serve the best in town. If you want authentic indian food go here. read more

What can I say except WOW ! After a terrible Indian food experience in downtown Ottawa at a restaurant close to our hotel we decided to drive the 15 minutes to St.Laurent Blvd and visit Coconut Lagoon. If you're staying in Ottawa and love Indian food this is definitely the place to go and eat. We got there right as the restaurant opened at 5pm for dinner on a Saturday night, glad we went early as quite a few tables were reserved and as guests were seated it rapidly began to get busy. The food here is spectacular and the skill of the chef is reflected in the dishes arriving at your table. I ordered the vegetable samosas and as another yelper noted they are a little different than the "normal" potato/vegetable style usually served. The filling appeared to be tomato/carrot mix that was delicious and these appetizers were served with a yummy mint sauce. My wife got the potato croquettes that came with a chili lime aioli, again a very yummy sauce and the croquettes were delicious. I ordered the Beef Curry cooked in a thick and creamy dark sauce and my wife ordered Nilgiri Chicken that was cooked in a mint and coriander green sauce. (Don't be put off by the green colour). The waiter suggested one rice dish and one bread as side dishes. Just before our main course arrived the very attentive wait staff brought our dinner plates complete with a little mango chutney and a papadum. Aromas of the Indian food tantalized the taste buds as our dishes were served and the amalgamation of delicate spices and the heat level of both dishes done to perfection. An absolutely fabulous meal on our last night in Ottawa and we'd love to eat here again. read more

22$ for lunch? NO. More like 15-17 $ for lunch. Dint get me wrong the food is ok but not too much variety, few basic indian food missing like curry, vindaloo, never mind the kababs or the traditional induan nan, they got roti though which you wont see in any other buffett. I grew up on Indian and Persian foods, i was one of the lucky ones that my mom knew best of the both worlds culture and travelled to both cunntries and i know there is a bit of different between provinces in food making. Place is not a bad size for seating but not enough parking spot. Buffett size is also small. If you dont mjnd over paying then try it. read more

Great southern Indian cuisine here. We had the Lamb Thali for 21$ with some extra porthas. This was between two people and it filled us just fine. So many different kinds of sauces and ranges in flavour. There are even yogurt sauces incorporated in the dish giving it a cooling sensation. Great atmosphere here. Very Bollywood-esque inside with an almost stereotypical Indian experience. They do have takeout here as well so take to go if you don't want to be in a restaurant. I found the service slight gruff, but they do give you what you need. All in all a very good place for southern Indian. read more

I have this friend who when I met her didn't eat much more than steak and potatoes. 5 years later, she has become a pho addict, sushi connoisseur, and surprises me with her international pallet daily. On this day, I received a text inviting me to grab lunch. With time to spare, I asked what she felt like eating, pho? Sushi? The reply was one that caught me off guard, "I'm craving buttered chicken" she said. What!!!! When have you ever had buttered chicken? I recommended we stop at coconut lagoon since we often drive past but have ever entered. We arrived at 1:45 pm not realizing that their lunch buffet closed at 2. We were welcomed and directed to a lovely table near the window. The delight that was about to ensue was the second surprise of the day, the food was orgasmic. If you enjoy Indian food as I do, I highly recommend the buffet. It allows you to try items that you may otherwise not get to experience at an a la carte restaurant; at $16 the price is more than reasonable. I have had Indian food many times in many different cities but coconut lagoon is by far the best I have ever had. This southern Indian restaurant has perfected the flavour of all their dishes, if you enjoy Indian food, you will not be disappointed here. read more

Came here on a Saturday for the lunch buffet with my girlfriend who is not a big fan of Indian food and we were both amazed! Food is very delicious, especially the mushroom dish and the pepper goat, as well as that wrap thing you get in the beginning. The waiters are always moving around and refilling your water/taking away plates. The venue is clean and not too loud. At $18 it's a few dollars more than other buffets, but the quality is outstanding and you won't be disappointed (treat yo self). read more

In town on business with two colleagues and picked this place because of the reviews from my fellow Yelpers. I had the Spicy Goan Chicken Masala with was very good (and spicy). My two colleagues had the Lamb Kurma and Butter Chicken. Each were very happy with their dishes. The place isn't very large, so it got fairly noisy with the other patrons. Now to be fair, there was a larger group eating together, so this may have been an anomaly. Staff was attentive and friendly. I give Coconut Lagoon two thumbs up and would definitely return. read more

Undoubtedly the BEST INDIAN restaurant in Ottawa. The only indian restaurant with a certified executive chef and that speaks for itself in the food. Lunch buffet: Loads of options. Indian food with a south indian touch.Different food everyday so if you do end up here twice in the week, you get to eat different dishes unlike other indian buffets. Do try the soup and the deserts. A-la-Carte: Simple elegant menu with selections for vegetarians to non-vegetarians. A carefully selected wine-list and do ask for recommendations. Shrimp Moilee and Kovallam Lobster Masala are to die for. I like them with the parathas. The service is at par with the food. Staff greets you with a smile and always keen to help you choose dishes if you are open to try something new (not your usual favorite dish). I could go as far as to say the best indian restaurant in Ontario. ***** for food quality, taste, service read more

First thing I noticed when I walked in was the horrid lighting. To make matters worse, the font on their menu is horrifying. I needed Excedrin just to be in there. The food wasn't that great. It was extremely sweet. The dipping sauce for the chicken pakoras tasted like a dipping sauce I've had with McNuggets at McDonald's. I usually like Indian food because it is spicy and not sweet. This food was really sweet and not spicy. I got sugar sickness from eating there, less sever than when I eat a Starbucks Frappuccino; more severe than if I'd had a Big Mac Combo. Also, it took around 45 minutes from ordering for the food to arrive. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't good. read more

Came here for dinner on Family Day, and for a tiny restaurant in the middle of nowhere, it's very popular. Thankfully we were able to get a table right away. I had the Ooty Mushroom Curry and got rice instead of the parathas. My partner ordered the Chicken Thali (which is basically small portions of all the popular dishes served with rice and parathas). I enjoyed my meal, although I confess disappointment that the mushrooms were cut up (the menu mentions they are button mushrooms and it would have been nice to have whole mushrooms instead). My partner was really happy with his meal (he hasn't been able to find Indian restaurants in Toronto that serve thalis, only Tibetan ones). We enjoyed the service at this cozy restaurant and can see why it's such a popular spot in Ottawa! read more

Went here one evening and noticed how quickly the placed filled up even on a Monday night. I had a hard time finding it at first as the sign wasn't well-lit, so I had to circle around to find it after passing Montreal Road and realizing I'd gone too far. This place is fantastic. Don't let the exterior of the building fool you- what's plain outside is amazing inside. The staff there was kind enough to fit us in even without a reservation (that may not have worked on a weekend, though) and the food came promptly after ordering. Service is friendly and professional and attentive, and of a higher calibre of other South Asian restaurants I've been to over the years. We ordered the vadas as an appetizer, and they were divine, though of a small portion (only two) for the price tag. However, the quality of the vadas and the included condiments/chutney were superior to what I've had in the past. My friend and I both opted to get the thali (she ordered beef and I ordered chicken and we shared those) since so many things looked good on the menu. Thali is basically many side dishes or small portions of their different curries served alongside rice and paratha. Everything tasted wonderful, and I personally preferred my chicken curry over the beef one. The small side of ooty mushroom curry made me swoon-- next time I go, I may order just that. The decor, the food, and the service all combine into a very fancy experience. They do have an 18 dollar buffet during lunch time, but I tend to think of this place as being more of a fine dining experience over a medium-level establishment like many other places. Top notch; I'll be back again soon. read more

I came here after reading the rave reviews from just about everyone. It's a little bit far from me since I live in The Glebe but I wanted to try some Kerala-style Indian cuisine and their menu has some dishes I've never even heard of. The decor here is a little fancy looking but it's still really casual, jeans are fine! I started with an order of samosas, and a Naddan Kohzi Curry. My friend got chicken pakoras, butter chicken and a mango lassi. The mango lassi I just had a sip of but it was wonderful, strong, sweet mango taste. The appetizers didn't take long, the samosas were smaller than usual but there were 6 of them and a mint sauce that came with them. The pakoras weren't the usual round shape and smelled strongly of curry, I tried a bite and they were delicious, they did also taste quite a bit like curry but it wasn't overwhelming, the sauce that came with them was a orangey yogurt sauce and it was really tasty too. The samosas were so different, it tasted and looked like there was a tomato base instead of a potato one, the inside was red, I enjoyed them. The pastry part was more of a phyllo instead of actual dough like I've had at other places. The food was fast to come out after our appetizers, they were served in the usual little metal container you see in most Indian places. I tried a bit of my friends butter chicken, it was rich and creamy and really good. Mine was also tasty, it was spicy, sour, with a hint of coconut, there were these little leaves all throughout it too. I don't know what they are but they sure looked nice. I found the portions to be a bit smaller than at other Indian places I've been to, and it was a lot more expensive. The butter chicken was almost $17 and mine was $16, because of this I prefer Host India on Montreal but this place is a definite close second. Forgot to add: After our appetizers they brought us a papadum with this sauce, and I'm going to try to describe the sauce... It looked like marmalade, same consistency, but it was kind of sour, kind of sweet. It was MINDBLOWING. I don't understand why it was so good. read more

I've been here a number of times and always leave happy. The wait staff is attentive and more than willing to provide suggestions or answer questions. The food is excellent and I have yet to try a dish I don't like. Perhaps even more astounding this that their lunch buffet is also quiet good. The various curries are quite flavourful and their is something for every palate. If you like in Indian food you really need to come try this place. read more

Excellent service. A taste of home in Ottawa. The location is off the downtown area and hence, requires a car to get to. Parking around the restaurant is very limited. Read the parking tips on the restaurant site for info. Food tasted authentic. Their butter chicken was one of the best I've had even compared to Punjabi/Pakistani/Indian restaurants. Call ahead to reserve as the restaurant gets full pretty easily. read more

Staying at a nearby hotel and decided to venture off for some dinner with my mom. The reviews for this place were good so we settled on it. Walking in, it's tiny, and there's about 8 or so parking spots on the side of the building. The tables were covered with a Kraft paper bag (jack astors style). But don't let that fool you, the service and food were amazing. Starting from the man filing up our waters (so courteous and kind), to our server who pretty much read our minds for our order, to the man dropping the bill (all amazing) My mom ordered the pepper lamb, since going vegetarian I wasn't able to try it but the look on her face made me believe it was amazing. It was fragrant. I got the coconut curry salmon. It was really good. But the naan that came with it was amazing. So soft and charred just right! I got the coconut ice cream for dessert, can't really go wrong there. With pieces of coconut inside, it was delicious. My mom also had 2 glasses of their house red. It was really light (coming from someone who doesn't like red wine, it was good). I got their mango juice and was a tad bit disappointed, I'm so used to thicker more authentic mango juice. Overall, we had a great time and enjoyed a good dinner. read more

Pathetic restaurant, picks up phone calls and purposely hangs up immediately. Horrible staff as well.

We had one of the best Indian feast there. I went for dinner with my two teenagers who love a good curry, and I'm not talking about Patack paste here, although it's better then nothing. I ordered scallops as an appetizer and both my kids were impressed, even if they were afraid of tasting it at first. We also had sumptuous shrimps and beef curry, with rice. Everything was delicious. I really enjoyed the Indian chai tea for desert. It's really busy, so make sure to reserve ahead. I would go back there again should I ever find myself in Ottawa again. read more

i have been dying for a good Halal Indian joint and it saddens me that I found one in Ottawa because it means I can't eat there as often as I'd like! This place is....AHMAZING! Service was fast, quick, friendly. Restaurant was clean, decor was very inspired. I wish the lighting was a bit bright (I hate dim lit food places) but that doesn't put a dent in my review. We were a group of 4 and each ordered a different plate and had a chance to taste the others. The butter chicken...is to die for. I am still dreaming about it...and the parathas...are like...flat bread croissants? I mean I would go there just to eat those things alone. I tasted their lamb, and considering I'm not a lamb person , I thought it was delicious and tender! Their chickenBiiryani was also delicious...and a chicken-coconut curry (can't remember the name) was also amazing. I really don't think you can go wrong with this place! I loved that the head chef came out a few times to say hello to customers. Their pricing was very reasonable and their menu was extensive. I would come back again and again...and again. Open a location in Toronto! read more

Wow! My wife says this was the best Indian food she's ever had. I would reserve that for my own mother's Indian cooking, but I would rate this place at the top also. I had the peppered lamb, she had a coconut chicken dish; they came with pouris and rice. My lamb was tender and delicious, not tough and chewy as I've had so often. Her dish likewise exploded with spicy flavors; both of us sobbed between bites! We finished off with mango lassi as a dessert. (She also had a mango beer with dinner - and loved it.) Service was very good, noise levels were moderate, decor was soothing: all good things. But the food was simply terrific! This place was a treasure. read more

I love Indian food and have educated myself about all the spices and ingredients that is used to make most of the dishes. This restaurant uses quality ingredients and they have an award winning chef. The restaurant is always busy, please make reservation. The service is great and efficient. I recommend everything they serve. Don't ask for hot, stick to mild or medium heat so that you can taste all the delicious ingredients and spices. Possibly the best Indian food I have ever tasted. read more

This was a okay (but pricey) place until recently. After eating at Kochin kitchen, near downtown Ottawa, I realize coconut lagoon is not worth debating. The food is "okay". The buffet is very monotonous; nothing for an Indian (like me) to brag about. The owner/staff can be a arrogant and cocky at Coconut lagoon. No justice for the high prices either ! Kochin kitchen though new, is much better food and great staff. Unless I'm dragged, don't see a reason to go to coconut lagoon again ! read more

It was my birthday. I didn't want anything ritzy. I've actually had some really mixed experiences with the popular, chique places in this city. TBH, I was ready to just grill some steaks and call it a day. The GF made reservations for a Tuesday night. We both thought that was a bit overkill but better to err on the side of caution. Wow! Was that ever a good idea. Place was packed the whole time we were there. From the outside, pretty low-key. Inside, nice, neutral, bright. Wait staff were all friendly, and classy. It felt much higher end than the price point. Also, they were very helpful (when we seemed indecisive), and enthusiastic (when we got a bit chattier). The food was great. This is some the best tasting North American Indian food that I've had. However, I'm not one to care about authenticity nor do I know much about it. I'm just comparing it to the other Indian restos I've been to in Ottawa, Toronto, and Dallas (big Indian population there). Not mind-blowing but just simply, very good. Anyhow, my GF and I have been looking for good, reasonably priced eats in the area. This is definitely now part of the rotation. read more

This is our favourite Indian restaurant in Ottawa!! There are many reasons for this.. the quality and taste of food being the number one, closely followed by the warm and cordial owners and the staff.. They have also renovated the place and it looks very nice and spacious.. When you go there you feel at home and always greeted by one of the staff. Our family dine here often and also order food for pickup. Mango lassi is the favourite drink here for my kids. We have gone through most of the appetizers on the menu and they are delicious. They used to have a fantastic curry mussels dish and I do hope they bring it back.. love the wade, pakoras, the Rasma, etc. Usually my main course is lamb biriyani. I love this dish as it is packed with flavour. Also if you want to try many varieties of curries, I do recommend one of the amazing Thali. It will give you a full Indian home meal in one.. My family loves the Dosa!! They have some awesome Masala Dosa. They always like to order this as it is perfectly cooked with medium spiced potato filling. I can go on for sure.. the bottom line is that if you are looking for some good quality indian food this is the place in Ottawa. Oh one more tip.. please call ahead and get a reservation before you go as you don't want to be disappointed. The restaurant is very popular and today being a Monday was full when we went there!! read more

So based on reviews...we were saving this place for a special occasion and we finally visited this place on my wife's birthday. I consider myself a kind off Indian food expert having lived in India for over 27 years of my life and having spent considerable time in both North and South india along with Brampton (how can I forget it ;)). Based on reviews I was already expecting south indian flavors in the food but to my dissapointment, the food was really really bland and not even close to authentic south indian spices despite of having a professinal chef. We ordered lamb chop, which was really chewy but atleast taste was ok and that is why I give 2 stars. The biggest dissapointmet was the lamb thali that we ordered. Honestly not even a single curry was even worth mentioning and we almost left it all. We also ordered chicken tikka masala and that too was way off from how it is supposed to be. The served parothas were cold and uninteresting looking. I can understand the good reviews based on the fact that they try to cater North American taste buds (mild flavors) rather than authentic flavors and their service/place itself was really good considering some of the other shabby Indian places in Ottawa. To any Indian craving north indian flavors try Little India Cafe(I still wish they had better service ,space and prices) or for south indian try Thanjai . Thumbs up to the server though for his impeccable service. read more

This is the first truly good Indian restaurant we've found so far in Ottawa, since moving here a year ago. Samosas were uniquely amazing. Chapatis were out of this world. I had the Paneer and Pea Makhanwala and my wife had the Butter Chicken. Both were outstanding, even being takeout. read more

Great Indian lunch buffet. Just right! I'll come back for sure when I hit the road again to Ottawa.

Entrées range from $20-$27, and for lunch there is a $17.50 buffet. Visiting for dinner I order a chai and the lamb Thali which comes with 8 side dishes along with the lamb, rice, and porathas (a flat bread). For someone like myself who enjoys trying a bunch of small dishes, I highly enjoyed the Thali in especially the tender lamb, and the pleasant mix of sour, sweet and mildly spicy side dishes. read more
