Nice Indian restaurant with huge portions! We stopped by Host India while wanting some comfort food on a dark, stormy day. The restaurant has ample parking space available and you can park in the empty lot beside it too. The restaurant interior is quite large, good for big groups. It seems that they used to serve a buffet here, but due to covid, everything is ordered from the menu a-la-cart style. We got the Butter Chicken and Curry Lamb and the prices appear a bit expensive as they came down to around $50 in total. The portion makes up for it though! Both items came in large bowls along with giant naan for dipping. The flavours were great too, really like the hint of sweetness in the butter chicken and the curry was very fragrant with all the garlic inside. We couldn't finish all the food between the 2 of us, which we ended up packing and got another meal out of it read more

Check your recipes before paying!! It was all good from the start. My in-laws and I went out to try a new something new. We got there and they sat us, near the window. We looked at the menu and we decided to get a bunch of appetizers and just split it among all of us. The waiter was kind enough to do that but, as time went on you can tell on his face and the tone of his voice, he didn't like that we did that. His customer service was a 0/10. He didn't smile once, he kept asking us what else we'd like on the menu but all we wanted to a bunch of appetizers to share. Throughout the night he looked annoyed and very unprofessional. My sister-in-law is lactose intolerant and has a 1-year-old (babies cannot eat spicy food) we tried looking on the menu to accommodate her and her son's dietary needs. Unfortunately there was only 1 thing that she could have that didn't have dairy but it had spices in it. The waiter kept saying that's it's spicy and they couldn't do anything to remove the spice. She kept having to ask him over and over that it couldn't be spicy so she could feed her son. He finally at the end made an exception and they made something with no diary and no spice (as someone who works in customer service my number one goal is to make my client happy and satisfied, in this case her needs were not met without having to constantly reinsurance it). My in-laws ordered rounds of corona beers and to keep count, they kept the empty bottles on the side tables to count them at the end. Overall it was a good night until the bill came. The waiter came up to us and said 29 beers later to which we all looked at each other and said there's no way that we drank 29 coronas. My husband and brother-in-law counted the bottles 3 times and the total was 17!!!!! Where did 29 come from?!? The lady near the desk kept saying it was a different number and called my father-in-law a liar. My brother-in-law kept telling her to look at the bottles on the side table and count them but, she never did she kept giving him a blank stare. He kept repeating himself and she kept giving him a blank stare. They finally went to count the bottles and the amount was correct ... 17 coronas. They were sorry which is okay, everyone makes mistakes but, at least listen and look at the table where the evidence is pointed. Overall I would rate my experience a 1/10. Somewhat disappointed. Choice of dishes was limited. Some were tasty, some weren't. To my mind the butter chicken was a bit strange and tasted tomatoey. This is my go to restaurant when I am craving Indian food. Ordered out for the second time this past Friday, and I am sold! They make the best pakoras and onion bhaji! The sauces that come with those dishes are amazing, but spiiiiiiiicy! The na'an bread is addicting, and I can literally just eat that and I'd be satisfied. I also tried the gobhi aloo, which is a cauliflower and potato dish. It was quiet good. Its a little hard to get into the parking lot, and the spots are tight, but that does not stop me from getting my takeout! :) Take out takes not more than 15 min for these guys to prepare the food, which is great! I have never been inside to dine in, so I cannot judge on the service/decor, ect. Def recommend! read more

Great curry and ambient atmosphere. Came for dinner on boxing day. The restaurant was quite busy so it took a while to get our orders in. The food was great though, and also comes with complimentary chips with green cilantro yogurt dip. The portions are generous and there's great variety in terms of curry bases, meats and toppings. We were recommended to this place by our friend who loved it. Unfortunately, our experience was awful, both because of the food but especially because of the cruel customer service. There are far better restaurants to support during the COVID19 crisis, who are more deserving of our hard-earned dollars. We hoped to support a local business with what little money we tend to have disposable. While we've had great experiences with other local establishments in Ottawa, like Pizza Nerds and Greek and Wheels and Shinka Sushi among many others, our experience at Host India was dreadful. There was a miscommunication in the kitchen and what was supposed to be an item substitution to accommodate an allergy was quickly made into a meal substitution for a cheaper dish--even after the restaurant and I confirmed over the phone. I hoped to quickly and amicably resolve the issue directly with the restaurant. The barman who picked up the phone said that it was my problem, denied my account of our conversation, and said the most they could do was refund the difference between the dish I wanted and the random dish they gave us. He then said I would have to pick up the money in cash in person. When I asked for alternatives that were contactless he dismissed me. I decided to just eat the cost and enjoy the rest of the dinner until I discovered that the condiments for which I explicitly asked, and which in Indian cuisine are essential to particular dishes, were missing and that the samosas were besides undercooked and gummy. I called and asked to speak to the owner/manager to explain the situation and receive recompense for the wrong dish that we weren't going to eat, having thought that we were being taken for granted. The owner/manager immediately escalated and yelled at me, said that I was just being greedy for money and he didn't need my business. To affirm, we were hoping to receive some sort of correction because we didn't receive the correct order after spending about $100. I rarely leave reviews online, and when I do it's only to praise local businesses to ensure they do well. But this is by far not only the worst restaurant experience I've had but the worst customer service experience I've ever had. It was especially cruel to have a rude and presumptuous restaurant owner scream at us that we just wanted money when my wife and I struggle to support our community as much as we can. This was a heartbreaking experience. Never again. Also, frankly, it's overpriced. I'd personally recommend to go elsewhere for your Indian food. Really disappointed. Our go-to Indian spot was closed for the time frame we wanted to eat, so we took the plunge and tried something new! We went into the experience having heard good things and hoped for the best. We ordered take-out: very very spicy vindaloo, butter chicken, a dansak, and a one other main dish that I don't recall. Had an appetizer and some naans as well. Upon pick-up, as we were paying, I logged into yelp and noticed that they offer 15% off for dine-in and take-out for all yelpers - amazing! When we brought this discount to the attention of the owners, they told us we were too late, and too bad. While I wish I had thought to look for the coupon sooner, I didn't not appreciate the attitude/response from the gentleman - "too bad" is never a good way to speak to a customer. Moving on to the food: It tasted quite good! Three out of the four dishes were pretty spot on, and the Vindaloo was pleasantly very very spicy (*note, this meal was not for me but for one other specific person - the following comments apply to the group as a whole). We enjoyed our meals...until later that day. We were all uncomfortable - perhaps we ate too much, perhaps the day was too hot overall, but the reality was that the food was not sitting well. For me and hubby, later that night and the next day were not pleasant, at all - let's leave it at that. If for no other reason, that aftermath has ensured that we will not be back. Weekends can be noisy with restless children and loud babies -- however, I've observed that this generally tends to be a "thing" with Indian restaurants, in particular. FOOD: The buffet is quite good with a wide variety of different delicacies spread out over a generous-sized food station. We're particularly big fans of the desserts. Wonderful hot lunch buffet, cheerful open space and staff. We sampled from beef curry, several varieties of rice, salads, butter chicken, curried chicken, soup, sweets and more. None of the dishes were overly spicy though all were quite tasty. What stood out was that while paying my friend expressed interest in tandoors which are in a small glassed in area. The manager invited us in for a demo of how the chef prepares the naan bread. Once cooked he wrapped it up for us to take home. Lunch was a very fair $35 with tip. I can't believe I am the only customer in the restaurant. The food is outstanding. Lamb Vindaloo perfectly spiced with just the right amount of heat. Best Naan I have ever had. Crispy, soft and very flavourful. Pakoras wee a little over cooked but the pickled carrot garnish was the perfect sourness. Chicke legs were very flavourful but slight over cooked. The cardamom in the rice pudding was delicious. The yogurt dip(I don't know what it's called) was a perfect compliment to the spicey vindaloo. A marvellous meal. What wine goes well with Indian? I've previously written a glowing review of Coconut Lagoon (which is also in the area), praising the flavour of Kerala-style dishes I've eaten at many buffet lunches past. When my work team and I are more in the mood for "typical" Indian cuisine, however - and with this, read: butter chicken, tandoori chicken, beef curry, lamb vindaloo, vegetable pakoras, etc. - then Host India is the place. Offering a wide selection of dishes, I find them easy on the palate (definitely not as spicy as Southern Indian style cuisine) without sacrificing flavour and richness of taste. My personal favourites are the tandoori chicken and beef curry, which I would always get a second helping of ... even when I probably shouldn't. The mango lassi is a nice touch too if you want something to complement the spice. The restaurant is spacious, well-kept, and gets very busy at lunch (Fridays especially). Parking is limited at back, but there is street parking, if I remember right. A room at back can accommodate huge groups if you plan to take all your colleagues for Christmas lunch. The staff are attentive, with constant but non-obtrusive water refills and plate take-aways. Overall, always a fantastic lunch experience. As a matter of fact, I would travel all the way to this area (St. Laurent/Montreal Rd), either to Host India or Coconut Lagoon for good Indian food. This is by far the nicest Indian place I have ever been to on my recent trip to Ottawa. I love Indian food and this place definitely earns its 5 stars. We just stumbled upon the restaurant and decided to try it. From the outside it looks like a minature version of disneyland castle, but once your step your foot in, your carried away with the aromas of the food and wonderfull atmosphere. The servers are great, they are quick, great at answering questions and offer fabulous recommendations. It was delish. We then got samosas which were a bit small but amongst the best I have tried. We ordered the Butter Chicken which was so good that we ended up getting a second order. We also ordered Saag panner and Lamb madras. Only 4 stars because we've only done takeout so can't speak to in restaurant service, and the food was ordered via Uber Eats. Ordered food via Uber Eats. It was packaged nicely, and presentation (given that it was in containers) was definitely attempted (a swirl of sauce on each one). Hands down, it has been the best Indian food we've had in Ottawa. We've tried four other Indian restaurants locally and all of them missed the mark - at least on items we like. We've ordered takeout three times in the last couple months and the quality has been consistently excellent. Our order was Butter Chicken, Lamb Khorma, naan, and Birajani rice. We were surprised to see beef on their menu so we tried it in the rice, and again the dish was excellent. All meat was very tender as if it was stewed for awhile to make it so. HUGE quantities - our two main dishes came with large portions of basmati white rice (2-3 cups easily). For two people, we got three meals each out of our entire order so we consider it a great value. The naan was quite good as well - very large. read more

I went to Host India last night for my bday dinner. The outside of the building is adorable and looks like a castle. Once inside I realized that this place is huge! Not a whole lot of decor and it's not really a cozy place but it is clean and does the trip. The menu was quite big (supposedly they are coming out with a new menu this week). my friend and I both ordered the Thali, me with lamb and chicken, her the vegetarian one. I told our waiter that I was celiac and instead of naan he brought me lentils which was really kind. I have to say everything was delicious (although I was not a fan of the lentils and the tandori chicken). I believe it was the pakora that was so tasty. These little fried pieces of heavenly goodness I could eat all day. The lamb curry, chana masala, all were really good. My friend's palak paneer was so fresh and her food was also delicious. She had the naan which was gigantic! The thali also came with rice pudding, which was good, but had a little too much clove for my liking. I have to say I was surprising delighted by these pappadum which look like tortilla chips and are served with this green spicy sauce. Soooo goood. We each paid $20 for supper which is not bad. Now I have to say I was dissapointed that there was no buffet. Supposedly they only have a buffet at lunch and sunday dinnertime. I thought according to their website that they had buffet everyday and was looking forward to it. I will definetly go back and hopefully go when they have their buffet so I can try a little bit of everything. Service was good, food is good, prices good, so I would recommend this place. read more

I forgot to update my review of the last time I was here! It was as good as the first time. I won a gift certificate from a contest on facebook! What luck. I appreciate that using the gift certificate didn't compromise the food at all, because I've had a few bad experiences where they would cut the portion size in half because I used a gift certificate. Doesn't make sense, but I've seen it done. I ordered the chicken vindaloo, samosas, butter chicken and a cauliflower curry. The server warned me that the vindaloo is ridiculously spicy, which kind of scared me so I asked if it was possible to tone the spice down a bit, the server said he'd go talk to the chef. The chef came out and explained to me how they make it, and told me the spice combination they use makes it extremely spicy, but he'd do his best. I appreciated that he took time to explain to me why they couldn't make it as mild as I wanted. The butter chicken here is just amazing. It's tangy, tomatoey (invented a word), and extremely rich. They use huge chunks of chicken breast, I've heard that traditional butter chicken is made with dark meat because it enhances the flavor, but I can't imagine it being any more flavorful than it is. The portion they gave me was also generous, and since it's rich it is really hard to finish in one sitting. You'll most likely have leftovers. The vindaloo was flavorful too. I can't imagine how hot it would be without the reduced spice level because it was REALLY spicy. If you got past the spice, the flavor of the gravy was really nice. The samosas are also fantastic, maybe my ONLY complaint about the entire restaurant is that the mint sauce they come with isn't my favorite, but it doesn't really matter because the flavor of the samosa filling is great anyway. Heavy on the curry, and spicier than usual. The cauliflower curry was also really good. In retrospect, I can't figure out why I ordered it because I really don't like cauliflower. This wasn't exactly an issue because it was seasoned so nicely I didn't mind. Huge fan of this place. Extremely thankful I tried it, because the exterior is kind of weird and I probably wouldn't have gone if it wasn't suggested by a friend. Reminds me of a toy castle. The first thing you notice is that the restaurant is spacious, clean and newly painted. The next thing is that the hostess greets everyone as an old friend. Arriving there early for Sunday brunch, it was quite likely that most were indeed regulars. Lots of older couples and young families. Host has a great looking and tasty buffet. Lots of selection, Everything fresh (arriving at opening time helps). Loved watching the naan guy do his thing in 'display' kitchen: pounds of naan dough stretched and fired in the tandoor. Friends tell me that this place is known for it's tandoori chicken. We tried some from the buffet and it was excellent. Spicy, tender with a smokey flavour that you don't get at some of the lesser places. Off the a la carte menu I'm sure it would be even better. Buffet was distinguished by lots of items: fresh stuff, salads, fruits, cucumber raita, a great coriander chutney, tamarind chutney (I like the condiments... although I suspect I am the Indian equivalent of someone who eats ketchup on bread.) Vegetarian items were very good and plentiful. Peas and cheese (one dish) and cauliflower and potatoes (another dish) stood out for me. In the meats, butter chicken and tandoori chicken were terrific. Stick with these. Alas, the meat in the lamb and beef curries was on the dry/chewy side. Desserts were much above average and can be categorized as interesting and wonderful. On the interesting side there was jelabi. Like a deep fried pretzel in sugar syrup - worth a try but only one. On the wonderful side there were two terrific rice puddings. Mango with fresh pineapple was light and refreshing. Plain rice with cream and coriander was satisfying and complex. Amazing food !!! Spacious room !!! Clean and Professional !!! Great Owners !!! Their kulcha's and naan's are to die for. Outside India, I have not have had such fresh and tasty Indian breads. All dishes have their own unique taste. Does not feel like each and every dish was prepared in the same curry base - a feeling common with most of the cheaper Indian places. My parents would rarely eat Indian outside home, but Host India is one restaurant that they are always looking forward to visit. Highly recommended and definitely worth the trip to Montreal Road and St Laurent. We drive there at least once a month, and that too all the way from Barrhaven. read more

If there's one thing I look forward to doing when I travel to Ontario, it's diving into some good Indian food - and more specifically, Butter Chicken. As a Butter Chicken aficionado (yea, I just dropped that), I have to say this place does a pretty bang up job. In 15 minutes from my call, the food was ready for pick-up, which in my experience is a quick turn around time for Butter Chicken. While I didn't stay in to eat, I was impressed by the atmosphere inside. The cook is behind a window so you can see him prepare just about everything that is going to find its way to your plate. I thought it was a cool touch on a place that screams authenticity.. or at least based on many of the indian restaurants I've been in. The only thing I didn't like was that the restaurant is located about 15 minutes outside of the downtown, so if you're ordering out, I would suggest you think twice and take the time to eat in. The food will get cold, and if you're in a hotel without microwaves, you won't be able to enjoy this food for what it really is. read more

I had a business meeting and one of my colleagues recommended we drive here for lunch. That was a great decision! The food here s amazing if you are not a fan of yummy spicey Indian food you can fund "less spicey" options but you are missing a lot. For 20$ you have an all you can eat open buffet that as a vegetarian I felt I have enough options here (Indian right :) ). So yes its not super cheap but if you check in on your yelp app you get 15% off and still ~20$ for an all you can eat , fresh and high qualty indian food is a great deal. read more

What a treat! Christmas Eve was the second time I have been to Host India having been taken there by a colleague a year and a half before. I remembered it was good the first time -- but the second time was transcendent. It is now my favourite Indian food restaurant in Ottawa. The fish dishes were sublime. Both the fish pakora and the fish tikka kebab made our evening. I was also very happy with my Beef Madras. Subtle, sweet and spicy. The servings were plentiful and we had extra to take home that we savoured for several days over the holidays. I have now mentioned it to many people -- and have added it to our top restaurant list in Ottawa. read more

Let me start by saying that Indian food is not only my favourite cuisine but my best friend is also Indian and her husband is as well. I have grown up eating Indian and know a fair amount about it and how it should taste. My first visit to Host India was alright. Their Mango lassi is so so, vegetable samosa was just alright with little to no spice (which is good if you don't like any spice at all) , onion baji was VERY salty. Their shahi paneer is good, dahl tadka ( dahl makhani) was just alright as well. Their naan might have been the best thing I had. Their prices are steep for what you actually get and their thali dishes are really small for the price you get with a slim choice. If you are new to Indian cuisine and don't mind spending more than the average place, this is your new spot! read more

We went for the lunch buffet and it is by far the best buffet. The flavors are incredible, the staff delightful. Awesome food. I was first brought here by family who loves this place and I have to agree with them. It's the best Indian food I've had (so far) and as much as I cook Indian at home I can't replicate any of their dishes to my satisfaction. Their vegan dishes are unbelievable, it's so nice to have so many options in a regular restaurant. The mushroom muttar and tarka daal are my favourites. My family's favourites are the butter chicken and beef vindaloo. They always have vegan options in their buffet and if you order off the menu the portions are a great deal for the price. The service is very friendly and I always leave with a smile on my face (and enough leftovers for lunch the next day!). The restaurant is nice and big so they can accommodate big groups. If you're in the mood for Indian food, the trip down to Montreal Road is worth it. Also, they have free parking behind the building if you're someone who worries about that! read more

The food had no heat at all. Had we ate in the restaurant this would have easily been corrected but due to COVID-19 we ordered thru SkipTheDishes (who were awesome). We called the restaurant and after I told him the food was quite flavourful but has zero heat to it I was basically told too bad for us, we should have indicated spicy. There was no "spicy" option when we ordered and our general expectation ordering these specific dishes is that they have some level of heat so we didn't think indicating "spicy" in the comments would be necessary. What was most upsetting, besides having food that was entirely unpalatable, was the unprofessional argumentative response from the restaurant. Not only was he unapologetic or uninterested in helping remedy the situation, he raised his voice and was cross with me saying people have different tastes or don't like every restaurant they try and that he didn't need our business. I was literally stunned by his rudeness! I've never encountered such a horrific response from any other restaurant before. Such bad business etiquette from a supposed award winning establishment- he actually told me he doesn't need our business! If that's the case he should have refunded our order. We offered to send back the full orders because we couldn't eat it after the first bite. We were not trying to get something for nothing... just our money's worth. No matter where we've ordered our Indian food before, these particular dishes had at least a medium heat. It certainly wasn't our first time eating Indian food. Pretty good actually. I have only ever been to the lunch buffet however what a great, fresh selection.
