I could have called, but the spa opened at 9am, and I didn't want to make a phone call in the car knowing I will be there soon. When I tried to check in, the front desk associate Kirstan Fournier berated me for being late. She said that I was unacceptably late, that Elena has a full day ahead, and that she doesn't know if Elena can accommodate me so they would have to take a no-show fee (which is my deposit). I was very apologetic and said I understood if I needed to reschedule. At this point, Elena came out and said that she could fit me in, but instead of trusting the Master Aesthetician's judgment, Kirstan said, "We will see what Elena can do, it is stated in your clauses that there is a no show fee and you obviously can't read or be on time." The reason why I was very upset is primarily because of the "you obviously can't read" comment. As an Asian woman, this sentence felt distinctly racially motivated. I sat in the spa treatment feeling humiliated and agitated. I reached out to management a few hours later, and the manager Maya told me "I'm sorry you misunderstood what Kirstan had said, we are not a business that allow discrimination." So it is the whole i'm sorry you feel this way, but it's your fault for not understanding correctly, our staff didn't do anything wrong, it's all on you for mishearing and misunderstanding. When I asked for a logical explanation i.e. would you (other staff) remember something was not said to you but just as a surrounding conversation half a day ago? She had no answer for me.
