I was craving birria ramen, and I had seen viral videos of this dish that had become popular in recent years. I saw that Cocina Express was starting to serve birria ramen, so I decided to come and give it a try. I ordered carry out, and got one menudo, one birria ramen, and two cheese mullitas. Surprisingly, the mullitas were probably my favorite item that I got. They were very generously sized, flavorful, and not too salty. The menudo was good, just slightly too salty for my tastes. The birria ramen was ok, but not amazing. The ramen used is a type of Mexican instant noodle, which was still good, but I think the combination of the instant noodles, the beef, and the consomme, were just way too salty for my palate. It was still good, but I could not eat too much of it. Overall, the dishes were still solid, and the place is pretty good. read more

Mom and I love (loved) their menudo. This place would give us more pata and maíz when we would ask for it. The last few times we have order they don't anymore. And today that we bought some, there is almost nothing, 2 pieces of pancita, few grains, and a lot of caldo. So disappointed. Didn't get one star because it is really good. We didn't care for it. We didn't phone/online order so it took 40 mins+ to get our food. Menudo was watered down, and hamony was under cooked. The low carb tacos were kind of big and gross looking and super greasy. Their salsa was very good. Overall, everyone in my group was disappointed. Ok so I have been ordering thru postmates no big issues from the restaurant at all just once w/an avocado incident where it was added to my food although we specified "no avocado please", Today tho, I ordered food and Atole which is on the menu when you order thru postmates, when the driver showed up he had an Horchata! Seriously!!! He said they told him they didn't have Atole but they should have messaged/called/cancel not send me what they feel like! That is not ok. ---------------------------------------------------- Had the opportunity to try this place out today. We had it delivered thru postmates. We ordered la torta cubana. I'm not a fan of avocado so they were very good in fulfilling my request which I'm very thankful for. This torta cubana was soooooo good! I LOVED it! They send a side of red salsa and the flavor of the salsa was super good. I believe that if the salsa is good then their food will be too! I'm definitely going to order again tomorrow. Most places I find don't match my mom's excellent cooking in my incredibly biased opinion (we all love momma, right?). I've tried the Pozole, Birria, Birria Ramen, red tacos... and they were ALL just masterfully made... especially the Birria Ramen! It's the only place I've ever wanted to take my mom to. Highly recommend. The 5 stars are for the food alone. The location, like most of the best places on earth, is just a small hole in the wall. It's in the middle of a bunch of houses. Don't go if you're a wannabe "restaurant experience reviewer" or whatever the snobs call themselves these days. Do go if you want great mom-style food. I live really close to this place so I go pretty often. Last time the burrito was really bad. I guess I forgot because I literally ordered the same thing. It was really bad(very little meat, with lots of fat). The caldo de res is good. Not bad, just don't get a burrito. Not only is it a crappy burrito. It's 13 bucks. This is an authentic Mexican restaurant. The minute you walk in it feels like you walked into your grandma's kitchen. I used postmates to order from this place. Ai placed an order for pick up for 3 barbacoa de res which included beans and rice. There was an option to add more meat for a dollar more on each plate. I decided to go ahead and add the +$1 charge to all three orders. When my order was picked up I only received the meat, onions and cilantro. When I asked why the order was missing the beans and rice, I was told that when you add that $1 to your order they give you more meat but you no longer receive the rice, beans and salsa. This needs to be specified in the app!!! I feel robbed. I was giving this restaurant another opportunity after previously ordering a torta and it came with only 2 pieces of meat and the salsas were less than half full. I am extremely upset and I will never return again. Forget about customer service; the workers here have no respect or consideration towards their customers. Truly a shame! read more

Love this spot. On a cold day their Caldos are so delicious. Hit the spot just right. I love the spot and go when I can. The tortas and burritos are delicious too. The service is always friendly and food comes out pretty quick. My only negative is also a positive - they are sold out of tamales often. Which means they are delicious. This place is pretty good. Its a bit on the pricey side. Ive been here twice. I tried the birria quesatacos and the birria ramen noodles. It is above average. They need to add more condiments to the orders. The 1st time I visited the restaurant, I ordered 4 tacos and a birria ramen to which i only recieved 1 small container of salsa and a little bag of cebolla/cilantro. 2nd visit I had the quesatacos and a small consome with a large drink. They forgot to include the utencils. I had no straw for my drink and no spoon for my consome. Thats why I deducted a star. read more

Food was definitely not worth the price. I oreder the menudo and 1 taco asada and 1 chicharon, whilt my wife order just the menudo and a coffee. First the tacos were cold and grease not much meat on it and for 2.75 each i was expecting more. Then the menudo was more broth then any thing which was bland. The trip was also to big to fit on the spoon which made it harder to eat, with little to no hominy. I will say there coffe was really good and i would go back for that. read more

The birria reminds me of how my neighbors mom would make it when I was a kid. There is nothing like comfort food all year long, the food here is fantastic, I definitely recommend anything birria, the carnitas, the ramen is also yummy with the birria!!! Although the East LA area has no shortage of great Mexican restaurants--the best Mexican food in LA is in this area--Cocina Express holds up with the best of them. Great customer service and great vibes at the location, with a spacious outdoor seating area embellished by mariachi playing through the speakers and in a more residential location. It feels homey. I had tacos dorados de birria and a carne asada taco and they were just superb. I'm always on a quest for the best birria and this is definitely up there. I highly recommend this place! read more

My boyfriend and I have been here about 4 times in the past month or so and every single time we leave very satisfied! Jill, who is usually at the register every time we go, is very friendly and has great customer service. We always get the red tacos de birria with consome, of course, and it's absolutely delicious! We've also ordered a soyrizo torta and I really enjoyed it as well, it was very flavorful and filling. Their strawberry lemonade and passion fruit agua fresca were outstanding, perfect for a hot Summer day. Pretty good local spot! I've only tried their breakfast and it hits the spot. Authentic rice and beans is how I rate my Mexican restaurants. Express is delicious and authentic! They have a restroom, but you have to enter the kitchen to access it. Their regular coffee is not the greatest. I am always hoping they have cafe de olla though. Omg I cannot believe how amazing this place is !!! I'm Vegan but the Birria tacos are so good - made me ditch my Kale Avocado Salad I had planned for lunch. The red dorado tacos are the best and I get with it with the Birria Ramen and I use that as Consommé. The hilarious part is that I was ordering from Postmates but they are literally 1 minute from my house- the laziness if I continue to order from Postmates is unreal. Asada Burrito is more like scraps of tripa, buche, and diesmillo burrito. Pastor Burrito had a good 6 pieces of meat and all of it was rice so they only showed you the meat and beans. This is not our Rancho over there in Mexico. You are not in a Sierra over there in Michoacán we're we can understand that eating meat is a luxury.
